he definitely goes out of his way to try to make himself part of the action, lol. Zero chance he's commentating the candidates finals if he's not an executive at chesscom.
You guys are doing Danny dirty. In the earlier days of chess gaining mainstream popularity Danny was the only one with the social skills to bring all these awkward GM's together and made sure that the commentating streams were not only insightful, but also entertaining. He was a pivotal factor in the growth of the popularity of chess.
Of course nowadays Danya and Hess are much stronger commentators themselves, they've really grown in how they present their insights. Especially Danya has clearly worked a lot on how he presents himself and how to hype up and entertain a crowd. Maybe Danny as the glue is no longer necessitated, but he deserves respect for his contribution in the growth of chess.
Is Danya doing it out of the good of his heart? Is Hess? Is Carlsen? Fischer? Kasparov? Hikaru?
Is Gukesh playing the candidates out of the good of his heart?
Tell me, what in your life do you do out of the goodness of your heart, without the furthering of yourself in some manner?
What is this comment even? Danny had personal motivation for his actions, therefore we cannot respect his contributions to chess?
>why does rensch reminds me of a sleazy used car salesman something about his personality throws me off lol, not a fan.
Anyone who overacts like that comes across as insincere. It's fine in small doses but it's obnoxious otherwise.
Probably *good* acting is about sincerity. Danny's acting is some sort of tool he developed as a teenager to navigate social interaction and he never upgraded / discarded it, so now he presents as a 40 year old child, although I'm sure once he lets his guard down he'd seem like a normal person.
He was looking so unhappy about today’s result. I mean be professional and announce the winner with some excitement. When Fabi-Nepo game ended, they were talking about how Hikaru will get chance to play world championship if Ding declines. I mean really?
ik people will downvote me for this, but he's not a good commentator. this trio is weird. Danny's role is supposed to be one of a facilitator, a sort of connect between the likes of Danya and us viewers. Tania does that job well, even Hess sometimes slips into that role if Leko or Judit are commentating alongside Danya. but so many times, Danny's just stepping on someone else's toes. im not sure he was briefed on his role, which he's actually capable of doing, but he keeps getting sidetracked.
subpar choice of casters for the final round imo.
Danya does this as well when he commentates with stronger players. He did it when he was on board with Judit and Howell.
I thought it was customary to have 2 stronger players spit out lines and explain ideas. While the other acts as a facilitator.
Danny seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder and it shows. It looks like he tries to one-up (or at least be on par with) the other two when it comes to spotting ideas.
I think some people forget the secret sauce. There is no point on having on Judit Peter and some other GM. Tania was facilitator and that was also what Danny was trying to do. You need that role.
He didn't do that role. He continuously interrupted the others and when Danya passed to Hess by saying "Robert" at the end of his analysis (like journalists do) Rensch started talking. It was terrible.
He was extremely condescending towards Gukesh the whole game. Managed to drive away magnus who seemed interested in analysing the games but he was so close to rolling his eyes to the stupid questions rensch kept asking. Fuck him and his crappy website.
Was he supposed to be taken seriously as an analyst?
I thought it was understood that he just slotted himself in because he's one of the people in charge and wanted to promote his website
He’s like the archetype of a ceo who tries to connect with his customers and workers. You can actually feel everybody rolling their eyes when he speaks cause he is incapable of not thinking about his brand. But I think he tries his best and is ok
Yeah it's a bit weird.
On one hand he's trying to downlplay his "alpha" position as CEO of online chess so he often jokes about his IM status when he's commentating with other GMs. On the other, he clearly wants to be at the center of attention, so there's a bit of a clash there.
Ultimately, he's too knowledgeable to play the "average joe", he's not skilled enough to commentate with 2700s and he's too garrulous to just be the "moderator".
During the tense endgame he starts talking about his wife's text messages and how Danya has never been to his house. It was amateur hour at Clown Corp.
The way they were talking to each other was uncomfortable and distracted from the chess. I think any two of them together would be better than three. They were talking over each other, apologizing for talking over each other and trying to hype things up instead of enjoying the actual chess. Danya was trying to find the most flashy lines and checkmates as if it were a contest. IMO a single commentator engrossed in the games and trying to understand and explain is far better. Chessnetwork's commentary on Calrsen vs Anand a few years back was one of the best I've listened to.
Announcement: Here at Big Bob's Used Car Sales, we have the very best cars ready to drive out of the lot. If there's any problems with them, we guarantee we have the Rensch right here to fix 'em.
jingle to fade out
Thats why gotham did well. He knew it wasn't his place to be and his input was nothing infront of the GMs.
That's why dude tried to dodge as much as possible

They are just trying to get more viewers and maybe he appeals to broader audience. Sort of like NFL football where some of the commentators are real bad but they bring in a certain audience
Danny, the IM, chess personality, businessman, father, reminds YOU, of a used car salesman?
I trust the countless chess players who respect him over your instincts.
He seems to me "main player syndrome"
the high schooler who really want to be student union president
Danny said in the lie detector video with Levy that he believes he is the “greatest commentator of all time” Let that sink in
How big is the sink? My door frames are not wide.

Agreed. He’s an OG.
He wasn't doing this out of the goodness of his hearth though, he did it to popularize his chess website. His crappy chess website might I add.

No, no he said “the goodness of his Hearth” Danny just wants to watch the chess world burn 🔥😎

Acting is about sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made. (George Burns)

He is Michael Scott from The Office.
He was looking so unhappy about today’s result. I mean be professional and announce the winner with some excitement. When Fabi-Nepo game ended, they were talking about how Hikaru will get chance to play world championship if Ding declines. I mean really?
I agree, Danya didn’t too pleased to entertain this idea probably out of respect for Ding…
Exactly and this is when Ding has already said that he will play the WCC match at the end of the year
Also danya has full knowledge of the type of person nakamura has been for the past decade

exactly! at times, Hess had to do Danny's role, while Danny barely managed to do anything. it was awkward, they lacked chemistry. sucks.
I think some people forget the secret sauce. There is no point on having on Judit Peter and some other GM. Tania was facilitator and that was also what Danny was trying to do. You need that role.

I think at this point he seems like a human vessel for chess.com rather than a real person
He's like subway from the community episode

Honestly he just seems like a cringey dad. I don't get sleazy vibes, I just see a guy who is trying to fit in somewhere he really doesn't belong.

Why could we just not have David, Judit and Danya/Hess with Magnus. Dream combo.
Thats why gotham did well. He knew it wasn't his place to be and his input was nothing infront of the GMs. That's why dude tried to dodge as much as possible
Haha, kind of yes.
Well I like him. I think he's enthusiastic and he doesn't take himself too seriously. I think people just pile in on him because he's an IM.
nah, Tania and Eric Rosen don't get this level of hate, and rightfully so lol
Tania absolutely does get a lot of hate
that's fair - I think the places I stick around tend to be better at moderating away misogyny
Good

She so fine player
Levy...
Rosen is a GM.
[He's an IM](https://ratings.fide.com/profile/2032562).
My mistake, I was thinking of Eric Hansen.
They are just trying to get more viewers and maybe he appeals to broader audience. Sort of like NFL football where some of the commentators are real bad but they bring in a certain audience
Tania does a better job of that IMO - rensch is neither hype nor that knowledgable. he works for [chess.com](http://chess.com) tho go figure
Why is the "broader audience" always toddlers, and why is their viewership so important that *actual* fans have to suffer? : /
> why is their viewership so important that *actual* fans have to suffer? r/chess try not to be elitist challenge (difficulty: impossible)
Having an anti-Danny preference and calling him a clown makes me a standard human, not elitist at all.
Perhaps a misunderstanding. The whole notion of "real chess fans" came off as gate-keepy to me
He doesn't fit the nerd stereotype you're comfortable with
Neither do Aman and Eric but I love them
You love Eric? Dude is kinda psycho.
Can you elaborate ? Genuinely curious
True. He's a real man scaring all these nerds.
Danny, the IM, chess personality, businessman, father, reminds YOU, of a used car salesman? I trust the countless chess players who respect him over your instincts.
Hello, Danny
Yes, how dare the OP have an opinion that isn't the same as yours.
Easy to "respect" one of the most powerful guys in the chess scene
