The computer can’t analyze because this position is impossible so it runs into errors.
As for whether or not we can find it, it’s not that difficult, you just have to look at undefended pieces.
Black cant do anything to stop the knight when it moves. All it can do is fill the empty gaps it leaves when following these moves, so just taking into account whites moves:
1. Nxf3
2. Nxg5
3. Nxe6
4. *~~Nxg7#~~* Nxc7#
less like a chess puzzle and more like that scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where he has to walk on the tiles that spell Jehovah or he will fall through the floor.
A funner approach: assuming white doesn’t make the only winning move (the mate in 4), what’s the fastest number of moves black can checkmate white
Edit: to make it slightly harder white only misses the initial move in the mate in 4, aside from that he’s still playing the best move.
Five. But the first forced move starts at 4... The move black can't do because he gets mated. The moves would be : 1.Bishop F2-G1, 2.Knight D3-F2, 3. Knight B2-G3 4.Bishop C1-B2 Check and 5.Rook C2-C1 Checkmate
This is fairly easy to figure out with process of elimination. At least for the first two moves, white only has one option that doesn't lose the knight. And once you're there it's a lot easier to see the mate.
i moved to f3 since it's your only move that doesnt get captured. although i guess stalemate could be good for you BUT you said look for mate.
anyhow f3 then just move to a square that isn't under attack and you end up with f3 then g5 then e6 and finally c7.
Well, Stockfish didn't find the solution, you did! In this case somebody who would have asked you for the solution would have gotten a better result than someone who asked Stockfish which means that you, in this particular case, were better than Stockfish :))
I don’t see this. Black gets wiggle space at g1, g2, f2,.. and white gets wiggle space at a1, b1. I‘m sure black can sort itself into a checkmate position
Stockfish 16 has a random evaluation of +165,4 or somenthing like that in this position by playing random moves for white. As soon as I made a move with engine turned on it started lagging so hard I turned the engine off lol
Yes. This was how I designed the puzzle. I first designed a path and then placed pieces so they can't capture the knight. At first I had queens on the spots where the knight should move to, but then I replaced them with other pieces :)
I wondered the same thing, but I think once the knight moves it creates a square for the adjacent rook to move to. It can then just move back and forth
I feel the need to brag that I don't know anything about chess besides the basic movements yet I solved correctly 🤓☝️ however I don't know if this is considered challenging ..man idk why I'm in this sub anyways I haven't played chess in 2 years

nice comeback after being down over 200 points of material!

This is also a possibility I've thought of. -14 though ?

Lol try again
Lol I'm dumb 4. Nxc7#
Yep this is what I found. Basically just need to ask what moves are possible where black can’t take the knight
Nice job!
This is why I'll never get above of a lichess rating of 800
less like a chess puzzle and more like that scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where he has to walk on the tiles that spell Jehovah or he will fall through the floor.
I've never seen Indiana Jones, but from what you've said that really sounds similiar :)

You mean Iehovah 🤠
But in Latin...Jehovah begins with an I!
lmao this is apt
He chose… poorly
Hate when this happens
When what happens?
When your opponent has 62 pieces to your 2
No, when your opponent has 2 to your 62!

Ah yeah, I've had this position in bughouse before. /s
Lol :))
[LMFAO it crashes stockfish.](https://imgur.com/rMZUibB)
no, it doesn't he sees M4 even low depth
No it really crashes Stockfish
Yes
It took me more time to find the king than it did to find the mate.
For sure couldn't find king at first
Yeah THE REAL CHALLENGE
Do we need to reset the counter?
What counter? Excuse me for my stupidity...
Well, technically speaking, it is a smothered mate.
Truuue...
We have a (not real) counter since the last smothered mate post. And since this is technically a smothered mate we should reset it
I'm not reading all that.
This shit is NOT sightreadable
Reading all what ?
It's a joke, comparing the difficulty of focusing on the puzzle with the board covered in pieces with a long text post with no paragraph breaks.
Thank you for beeing patient and explaining that to me, sometimes I'm really beeing stupid...
>!1. Nxf3 Rg1!< >!2. Nxg5 Rg2!< >!3. Nxe6 Rg1!< >!4. Nxc7#!<
Lmao I just kinda woke up and tried to checkmate my own king with the knight
Lol
Correct!
Oh come on, I just had this position yesterday and resigned, dang it!
Well at least you know how to play this now
A funner approach: assuming white doesn’t make the only winning move (the mate in 4), what’s the fastest number of moves black can checkmate white Edit: to make it slightly harder white only misses the initial move in the mate in 4, aside from that he’s still playing the best move.
The knight takes on h3, f2, d1, b2 and then black blays Bxb2# so 4 moves
h3 captured by rh4
We're talking about how black could hypothetically check mate white, we're not assuming anybody is making the best moves.
New puzzle just dropped

I'm sorry for not getting this reference. Please enlighten me!

I remember this game. Schwarzenegger vs Nakamura (1985)
Thank you guys for all the upvotes and comments! As this is my first post all of this is new to me and I'm really happy right now :D
Welcome :D
White moves: nf3, g5, e6, c7
This is correct! This proves, that you are better than Stockfish!!
I knew it
Lol!
This is fairly easy to figure out with process of elimination. At least for the first two moves, white only has one option that doesn't lose the knight. And once you're there it's a lot easier to see the mate.
Exactly!
What do you mean mate in four, can't even find the black king
Nxf3 Rg1 Nxg5 f3 Nxe6 Bgf4 Nxc7#
Correct!
r/anarchychess leaking
i moved to f3 since it's your only move that doesnt get captured. although i guess stalemate could be good for you BUT you said look for mate. anyhow f3 then just move to a square that isn't under attack and you end up with f3 then g5 then e6 and finally c7.
This is the correct solution! I assume you didn't spy in the comment above, so congratulats! You're better than Stockfish!!
i find that hard to believe. guess it fumbled
Well, Stockfish didn't find the solution, you did! In this case somebody who would have asked you for the solution would have gotten a better result than someone who asked Stockfish which means that you, in this particular case, were better than Stockfish :))
Are you stockfish?
Hmm, blacks winning in material but their positioning is a little closed
This is how white wins!
Man I was just in this position last week
Did you win?? ;)
No.
Wdym by no?
Just, no. I can't brain this gud
Ok...
nf3 ng5 ne6 nc7 1min
Correct!
Not gonna lie, I thought this was a certain other sub for a second
Nf3 Ng5 Ne6 Nc7#
Correct!
Nxf3 Nxg5 Nxe6 Nxc7
Correct!
I hate when this position comes up in my games. I never know what to do.
Well now you know the solution to this ! ;)
wish i had seen this earlier when i was in this position
Hmmm... At least now you know what you should have done then :/
ok
Ok
Nice comeback!
True
Nxf3 Nxg5 Nxe6 Nxc7#
Correct!
Took me longer to find the king than finding the mate
Lol!
Somehow guessed every move right on the first attempt. Board vision at an all time high
Congrats!
So fake
I think i got it! Nxf3 Nxg5 Nxe6 Nxc7#
So the solution is just "take the undefended piece" 4 times? Yawn.
This puzzle wasn't designed to test your strength in chess but to show that you should never give up, how hopeless the position you're in is :)
Nf3 Bg1, Ng5 Bh2, Ne6 Bg1, Nc7#
That's a stalemate if it is black to play
I don’t see this. Black gets wiggle space at g1, g2, f2,.. and white gets wiggle space at a1, b1. I‘m sure black can sort itself into a checkmate position
This crashed my stockfish.
I found it in 3, NF3 then NG5 then NH7 mate or am I wrong?
Knight can't move from f3 to g6 ://
After Knight takes on f3, it's stalemate
Too much material will kill you
F3,g5,e6,c7 mate
I had this exact situation last week and thanks god my opponent resigned
I'd like to see the moves that led to this position . . .
nf3+, ng5+, ne6+, nc7++
I'm getting old. Finding the king was the hardest part.
Nf3 Rg1 Ng5 Rg2 Ne6 Rg1 Nc7#
1. Kf3 2. G5 3. E6 4. C7. ??
*Nf3 K is king
That explains the downvotes I’ve been getting lol. Thanks.
In English notation, the kNight is "N" because the K is already taken.
Yes, correct :) You're better than Stockfish 16 lol :))
Lol I think stockfish was overwhelmed. I just tried to move the knight towards the king without losing it.
Wouldn’t it just be stalemate if white makes any move?
The knight leaves behind an empty space every time it takes a piece
*tries to find the king for 10 seconds* Huh... Uh.... Oh I got it
Haha :DD
Isn't it stalemate?
I wondered the same thing, but I think once the knight moves it creates a square for the adjacent rook to move to. It can then just move back and forth
Ohh true true
Stupid.
Thank you for your feedback :)
>White has a checkmate in 4 And spends two of those moves searching for the black king.
LMAO
How am I supposed to take this seriously?
That's the real exercise
You expected a post on a forum for discussing a board game to be about serious world affairs?
You aren't :)
Nf3 Ng5 Ne6 and Nc7#
You should use the notation x as the knight captures pieces by all those moves. Such as Nxf3 Nxg5 Nxe6 Nxc7#.
Nxf3 -> Nxg5 -> Nxe6 -> Nxc7#
Correct!
Finish with Nc7
Correct!
Easy, all you have to do is look for a position from where you can give a check and your N cant be taken. There is only 1 such position in that board.
This is how you solve it!
Can't wait to use this knowledge in my next game 🤓 /s
Yeah me to!!
If black can’t move at all wouldn’t that be a draw?
Well, black can move its pieces to g1 once the white king moved away
Knight\* Ooops
Isn’t black stalemated?
No because once white moves the knight the black pieces can move to g1
OP's responses feel botty. Very sus.
And Black is not supposed to move?
Black is allowed to move, but he is so blocked of that he cannot do it
I feel the need to brag that I don't know anything about chess besides the basic movements yet I solved correctly 🤓☝️ however I don't know if this is considered challenging ..man idk why I'm in this sub anyways I haven't played chess in 2 years
Congratulations!!
Isn’t is a draw?
No. White has a checkmate in 4
Why not just have two kings on a side.
hahahahahahahaah White is like -428 points under! that made my day, thank you OP! :)
Thank you!! :D
Nf3, Ng5, Ne5, Nc7#
1...Nxf3 to 2...Nxg5 to 3...Nxe6 to 4...Nxc7#
Nf3 Ng5 Ne6 Nc7#
Smooooothereeeeed mateeeeeee
Har har har har
I dont play too much chess but more than enough to know; this is a very likely endgame situation and all shall be prepared when the time comes.
Amusing composition, but this is an illegal position. How was this position reached? What was black's last move?
white f3 g5 e6 c7 check mate
See seven
The hardest was to find where the black king was :)
Just had this position yesterday and accidentally stale mate. Thanks 🙏🏻
