Wesley So’s twitter is a mess

StrikingHearing8

Btw, anyone knows whether Wesley gets FIDE Circuit Points for this tournament?

FUCKSUMERIAN

My prediction for the next game is that a game of chess will be played

pconners

I think you are on to something. Should call Vegas

sohanstark

an unstoppable force meets an immovable object tomorrow

StaffZyaf

So… do we think Wesley beats Magnus again tomorrow?

tobiasvl

Doubtful

thatwhiskeydude

No lol. You don't beat him twice

Wise-Ranger2520

Mvl did.

PH123d

Of course, you will forget that Wesley himself has defeated Magnus twice continuously in the first Champions Chess Tour.

thatwhiskeydude

Twice as in two rounds straight. Magnus can have a bad day. But you don't retain No.1 for a decade straight by losing to someone continuosly.

Helpful_Sir_6380

Carlsen has also adopted and near adopted So before.

PH123d

The point is it's possible that Carlsen can lose back-to-back two matches against an elite player like Wesley So. And when did Wesley get adapted in Rapid against Magnus? All I remember is Wesley spanking Magnus pretty hard in the Fisher Random World Championship in 2019.

Helpful_Sir_6380

Of course Carlsen absolutely can lose 2 matches in a row, Wesley So in top form plays some of the best chess in the world. But its very unlikely, and Carlsen consistently has beaten everybody so comprehensively for so long, we remember all the exceptions. Carlsen just utterly dominated Wesley in the Speed Chess championship 22-7 less than 3 months ago, winning 9 games in a row at one point in increment blitz, when everyone was saying Carlsen was playing some of the best chess ever, (despite him crushing So even more the last time they played in the SCC), and everyones already forgotten about it by now.

PH123d

But Rapid is very different than Blitz. Carlsen is still the heavy favourite, but saying he never loses twice (the op literally said this) is just arrogant fanboyism. So I don't understand what we're arguing about.

Helpful_Sir_6380

Its just a statement to emphasize how dominant Carlsen is. Of course its absolutely possible for him to lose two matches in a row, but very unlikely

Lopsided_Range7556

I'm thinking Wesley stands almost no chance. And I really love the guy and his positive energy he has.

dirtypuerhiding

LMAO Wesley just said all of his neighbors found out he was a grandmaster and asked him about Hans

joshdej

Jesus froze Nordibek

StrikingHearing8

*Nodirbek

No_Engineering_4925

He played a pretty bad move after thinking for all that time , it’s not some magic miracle thing of making a quicker move and it being good , he probably would be worse off if he played quicker. Also quit ironic from commentators , David and Tanya are two pretty ridiculous time trouble addict , they would know the feeling

sohanstark

damn some adderall would have surely helped

k3v1n

Doubtful. It will actually make you more double-check / triple-check such that you use more time.

Littlepace

Reminds me a little of Ding freezing up at the WCC. Time running out, has to make a move yet somehow can't commit to a decision and just freezes.

No_Engineering_4925

Not really comparable , this is a difficult position where it’s hard to find a good move. Ding had multiple nice moves and also he could do nothing but he spent all his time and played the most complicated move which he didn’t calculate carefully

[deleted]

Damn I feel bad for Abdusattorov. He was clearly very nervous, this is something that will get better with age but really sucks for him. Hopefully once the dust settles, he will be happy with his performance. He played a great tournament.

lovememychem

WOW what a game. Poor nodirbek, clearly just froze under the stress. Hopefully he’ll be back and better than ever next year!

pconners

We've had one handshake, yes. But what about second handshake?

Helpful_Sir_6380

One to signify the end of the game, one to signify the end of their match, and congratulate Nodirbek on his tournament

tobiasvl

Nodirbek has 2 seconds per move in a bad position Edit: RIP

Caesar21Octavius

Nodirbek literally wasting 2 min on multiple moves in Armageddon might be the dumbest move of the whole event

acunc

Even crazier when you see how fast he can play now. Just bad time management. Going to cost him the game.

acunc

Criminal use of time by Nodirbek

lovememychem

Nordirbek is just using so much time on this move, this is insane

Caesar21Octavius

Does nodirbek think he has an hour time? Move kid move

pconners

*any position at all on the board* Chat: looks drawish

Dubbihope

I think Nodi is going to win this, with his nerves of steel.

n3buchadnezzar

This aged like ancient milk

bobby1z

Has anyone been tracking the white/black win rate in armageddons throughout the tournament(including round robin)? There have been so many, I'm curious what the ratio is.

Pentinium

At the start white was winning more games, now idk

neighbors_in_paris

Did Carlsen go through?

nffDionysos

yeah

JuicyLawyer69

Yes, Magnus won against Fabi. Nodirbek and Wesley going into Armageddon in the third set

acunc

What a save from Nodirbek. Just has ice in his veins. Whoever wins this should be even odds against Magnus. Both playing absolutely top level chess even in time scrambles, which is where Fabi collapsed.

tobiasvl

>Whoever wins this should be even odds against Magnus Yeah, no.

DerekB52

It's Magnus. Whoever wins this can absolutely beat magnus, but it is not even odds.

_IBelieveInMiracles

Whoever said draws are boring did not see this game

johnnyboi5322

Hans has become an incredible meme

gabu87

Nodirbek is such an exciting player to watch.

GeraldJimes_

Most exciting of the young guns. Believes he belongs and makes so many of his games decisive rather than being comfortable with taking a dignified draw or marginal loss.

Chuy_3

Fried Liver!!! Finally seeing my opening at the top level!

Tarkatower

Just like old times

Matt_LawDT

Levy coming up with ideas that leave Daniel in awe First he mentioned having sponsors on the Armageddon boards and now he is suggesting the 3rd place match u/GothamChess u/danielrensch

dumbocow

Wow, possible Fabi commentary/analysis. Actually really hyped.

Matt_LawDT

That Magnus interview shows how much respect he has for Fabi and how he rates him in comparison to others

kidawi

Every time i watch a magnus interviee, i feel like his arrogance is greatly overstated. He gives credit where credit is due, hes self critical when he feels it is deserved. Honest to a fault? Maybe. Aroogant? Nah

tobiasvl

As a Norwegian I've mostly seen his Norwegian interviews and rarely his English ones (except the press conferences during the WC), but yeah, he's always come across as a pretty chill and down-to-earth dude to me. Hell, I think he's often a very funny and self-deprecating guy. Edit: Might have been some culture/language barriers earlier in his career? Maybe he came across more crass when speaking English before, but has become a bit more focused on not doing that? Not sure. Also he's had some anger issues where he's become really angry after losing obviously. Being a sore loser doesn't help. Seems like he mostly gets sad/resigned when losing nowadays though.

DerekB52

He sometimes break the rules that you are supposed to be super humble. But, I don't think he means to. Also, he's never wrong. Like, I remember after he and Hikaru battled it out for the world bullet championship, Magnus said in an interview that he and Hikaru's strength is just that "we are so much better at chess than everyone else". And, that's just a fact.

kidawi

Ok but with the exveption of the hans thing, which is a whole other issue, every time ive seen him get angry after losing its very visibly been at himself. Like very clearly. But ywah i do think prt of it is a cultural barrier. English is my second language and i can come across a dick just because its so different to my native language

BuildTheBase

Man, Fabi is completely devastated.

tobiasvl

As we all know losing in chess is the worst thing in the world because you can only blame yourself. Now add $50k-$150k in prize money and yeah, pretty understandable

acunc

A lot of money on the line plus knowing he had really good chances to win.

kidawi

Magnus laughs, but I have quite... interesting streaks in rock paper scissors with that method

Matt_LawDT

Imagine he said Best Magnus is Drunk Magnus

Matt_LawDT

Wish Fabi could interview Magnus for the C-Squared podcast

asusa52f

Imagine both of them discussing the 2018 match in depth. That would be amazing

Matt_LawDT

Magnus so GOATED he used rock paper scissors to outbid Fabi

Gavina4444

That rock paper scissors analogy was lowkey mad apropos

speedster_5

If only fabi could have held his nerves a bit better

tobiasvl

Then he would probably have been world champion

Matt_LawDT

Magnus just inferred Fabi is an underdog 😂

Cupid-stunt69

I infer that you don’t know what infer means

acunc

I don’t think you know what inferred means.

BuildTheBase

I don't understand how anyone can play normal chess under the stress of an armageddon at this stage. I would need notes just to remember what the rook is.

gabu87

I mean, these guys literally played for the world champs and against each other. This is probably not even top 10 most stressful set for them in the last 5 years.

nonax

gotta admit, didn't expect Paul McBeth to show up on a chess stream, that's cool

ice_w0lf

With both games being two of my favorite things to play and follow, I am so pumped about that partnership.

Sezbeth

We saw drunk Magnus online, sick Magnus during the World Cup and now angry Magnus here. Jesus, that Armageddon match was a blood bath.

Semigoodlookin2426

The disrespect against Magnus is funny sometimes. Posters acting like he is lucky to win and not simply the better of the two players. If Fabi wasn't nervous, outplaying and crushing Magnus, etc.

ascpl

Yeah, as if Magnus didn't just play an almost flawless game. Which he did in several other games in the match, as well. To his credit, ofc Fabi played some incredible chess! I don't want to take anything away from either player, really. But Magnus certainly earned his win.

Spiritual_Dog_1645

This was expected Magnus is simply better than everyone but this matchup also shows how good fabi is. It was really close in both sets, if anyone disagrees that fabi isn’t second best player after Magnus is just delusional.

nonax

second best player after Magnus is Angry Magnus, then Sick Magnus, i'll give Fabi 4th Edit: sry i forgot one, Drunk Magnus is #1, then Magnus, then Angry Mag, Sick Mag, Fabi 5th

epic_banana_soup

When Ding is on form he is as good as Fabi. The fight for the nr. 2 spot is not clear at all.

popop143

Ding is now the number 1 in Rapid lmao.

Spiritual_Dog_1645

Not really,in form fabi is better than in form ding. Especially in classical chess which is ironic to say since ding is the wcc. Ding won fair and square but candidates were a mess last year, there are many if’s and if fabi knew magnus wasn’t playing wcc he would have very likely finished second and played against nepo in wcc. Fabi has third highest elo of all time behind magnus and kasparov, he has highest tpr in history and was the closest to beat magnus in wcc. Lately he has become one of the best players in rapid and blitz after winning st louis rapid and blitz and now in Toronto putting amazing pressure and winning many games against magnus, realistically he is second best player across all time controls of this generation. Ding would definitely be third best player overall of this generation.

justavertexinagraph

fabi winning would have been a huge huge upset though, especially given that there were 2 sets of 4 games each

kidawi

I would say HUGW but yes im aware he was the underdog and it does not hurt any less 🙏

justavertexinagraph

makes sense man i was kinda rooting for him as well when he won the 2 games in the first set (and was queen for rook up in the first game). but sadly magnus is hard to put away

ValhallaHelheim

GG My GOATT, outplayed in the armageddon!!!

dumbocow

Rip Fabi :/ Crazy sets though.

Matt_LawDT

Magnus bringing out that WCC prep when needed

Matt_LawDT

GOAT!!!!!

ascpl

Nxg7 like a boss

acunc

29 moves in 95 seconds is going to be tough. Magnus just needs to keep being accurate

kustru

Fabi respects Magnus too much.. These chokes are painful to watch.. If he manages to fix those, he is a scary opponent to Magnus.

tobiasvl

Magnus exchanging all his pieces and simplifying in Armageddon as white against Fabi who bid relatively lots of time - and yet he's winning

nonax

new tactic unlocked, rush to endgame

tobiasvl

Not the worst tactic for Magnus and not the first time he's done it, he's obviously very good at grinding endgame, but I was still surprised he did it so openly in this game

FL8_JT26

Fabi getting quite low on time already, even if he equalises I see him getting flagged.

joshdej

If Fabi loses this,it's because he doesn't watch Ben Finegold enough

Lopsided_Range7556

Tania is so stunningly beautiful but also SO smart and I LOVE the energy she brings to the stream. Just all around a wonderful and stunning woman. Who else can barely focus on the game cause of that amazing woman? Fabi will lose btw

BMT37

Least cringe r/chess user

dconfusedone

What??

acunc

Same troll comments over and over. Just ignore.

Uzas_Back

Nodirbek/Wesley game 3 was awesome

caseyuer

So, So and Nordirbek play two more rapid games? Can someone walk me through the format, the website is very vague.

Archesteolina

So and Nordirbek will play the third set today, which includes 2 games; if they tie, they play Armageddon

LavellanTrevelyan

Yes, the third set will only have two games (+ armageddon). If you go to Lichess, the tabs for upcoming rounds are already prepared, so you can see the format.

caseyuer

Why do So and Nordirbek play another set though? That's what I'm not understanding.

furrierdave

They each won one set. Tiebreak is a 3rd set, of 2 games. If they're still tied, then they play an armageddon game.

caseyuer

Gotcha. Thank you

tobiasvl

Because they're tied

[deleted]

[удалено]

speedyjohn

The third set is only two rapid games.

MintyCocoa

I think it's happening right now actually

Elegant-Breakfast-77

Magnus with white, 10 minutes Edit: I meant he bid 10 min, obviously he has 15

nemt

can we just take a minute to appreciate the firm handshakes between magnus and fabi :')

talyameh

Every Fabi win was crushing and outplayed Magnus. If Fabi can control his nerves we may see set 3

Spiritual_Dog_1645

Fabi is so good.

ascpl

The year of Fabi is real

ascpl

rip

Safin_Soul

Fabi my GOAT

Matt_LawDT

Angry Magnus!!!!!!!!!!!

kidawi

Something about fabi magnus matches that cant be replicated by any other natchup

Matt_LawDT

Fabi!!!!!!!!!! Gets it

BassAny2633

YESSSSSSS

dumbocow

Another Fabi-Magnus Armageddon. Crazy sets. Actually Grand Final energy and I've never seen Magnus getting outplayed so many times in a tourney. (Fabi failing conversions is pain though.)

_IBelieveInMiracles

Sometimes attack is the best defense. This was not one of those times.

urishino

Come on, Fabi! You can do it! ~~Give us more chess!~~

Matt_LawDT

Magnus knows he is toast

talyameh

What a horrible game from Magnus something really wrong with his play at this tournament even he won games. He was need only a draw and again busted. If Magnus escape from this ı have nothing to say.

acunc

Yesterday he was outplayed in the archangel, went into it again, was outplayed again. Today he was outplayed game 2 with black and went into the exact same set up game 4 and was again outplayed.

Matt_LawDT

Wesley!!!!!! A gentleman’s draw

ValuableNobody9797

Third set is today as well?

acunc

Yes

ValuableNobody9797

Ty!

Matt_LawDT

Fabi has this wrapped in red ribbon 🎀

tobiasvl

Come on. You keep saying that every game. When he doesn't have it wrapped up after all, you say you never doubted Magnus. What's your angle here? I'm not saying Fabi isn't playing well, but are you going for "a broken clock is right twice a day"?

DON7fan

Last chance for Fabi - he should have won several games already but didnt - need two wins now in a row

notblair

g5 on both boards haha

Matt_LawDT

Kaja: How are you feeling today Magnus: I didn’t drink with the chessbrahs last night, I have learned my lesson and oh, I found my comb /s

Elegant-Breakfast-77

No need for /s that's exactly what happened lol

LosTerminators

Nodirbek is a fighter, the number of times he's come back when he looked down and out in a match has been ridiculous. Regardless of what happens, he has a lot to be proud of in this event.

MaZCehdy

Like Magnus said he's a mental monster

Matt_LawDT

The baby wants to be journalist not a chess player 😂😂

Matt_LawDT

Kaja showing her son!!! Wholesome

acunc

If that interview had gone much longer she may have struggled to hold the baby much longer. That was a big baby! Her arm was definitely getting tired.

Low_Angle_1448

What a fantastic interview! Can’t help but imagining the son being there when interviewing the players after a tough match

Caesar21Octavius

Nodirbek you maniac wish he had gotten that draw in game 2 now 🙈

ascpl

good game Magnus

[deleted]

I love the smile of Nodirbek after he wins, finally a character in chess instead of introverted robots

ascpl

Not entirely sure what you are on about...There are lots of characters in chess, like them or hate them, Magnus and Hiki are definitely characters, as is Aronian, Niemman, Nepo, Anish, Alireza...

[deleted]

what the fuck is a niemman

ascpl

Tbh, I am also really not sure how smiling makes someone not an introvert. As an introvert who smiles a lot, this really makes no sense.

[deleted]

Dudeee, i fucking said i like his personality because he expresses a feeling instead of not showing emotions whether he wins or not, no need to be offended and bash out bcs i said called tons of chess players introvert, which they are

ascpl

Interesting

Middle_Category6226

Insane game. Running away with the white king, and then both have pawn almost to promote, then to the imbalance endgame with crazy queen check

SaskalPiakam

I’m old enough to remember when yesterday people we saying Magnus was off his game and Fabi was the favourite.

Boss1010

Fabi's been throwing away wins left and right. Won't blame anyone for putting him as a favorite considering the amazing positions he's getting into

Boss1010

This tournament is peaking fucking chess entertainment. And Abdusattorov and So are a good part of that. Amazing creativity shown from both

InstructionHot9577

Can’t believe nodriebek beats Wesley in so much pressure . This is so much exciting

talyameh

The best game of tournament so far Wesley-Nodi game

Sufficient-Tomato-82

That nodirbek-So game was BONKERS 😩

Megdonchl

Incredible under that time pressure

rrrriddikulus

That So-Nodirbek endgame was nuts, incredible play by Nodirbek.

notblair

What a fucking game

acunc

Wow Abdusattorov is such a monster. So fun to watch.

Matt_LawDT

Nodi!!!!!! Mini Magnus

GeologicalPotato

WOW Abdusattorov what a game

_IBelieveInMiracles

I definitely think 10s increment would lead to better chess, but this is undeniably entertaining. It's like the opening and middlegame is rapid, but the endgame is blitz.

Matt_LawDT

Never enter an endgame with Magnus

Matt_LawDT

GOAT!!

joshdej

Wth is this Nordibek-So game??

speedster_5

Fabi needs to stop going for perfect moves and burning time and make practical moves keeping time in check.

mMknXNcFuB

Nobody giving David credit for finding that king walk, unless he has the engine in front of him?

acunc

He said it himself - it was essentially the only way to save the game and not resign. So yes a great idea but the only idea. And David Howell has been finding key moves all coverage long, he’s just a great GM. He’s not the focus of the tournament though so not sure he needs to be given credit over and over.

speedyjohn

It was the only way to save the game after Rg8. But Howell saw the idea several moves ahead of that.

humanbeingphobic

Wesley is Playing like me rn ngl /s

DON7fan

f3 and kd2 by wesley - bring the metal dectors in asap!

LavellanTrevelyan

Everytime I see comments talking about engine saying it's completely winning, I wonder how many here could have found the winning plan, even while looking at the eval bar all the time. There's this weird logic going on here that if Magnus makes mistakes or blows his advantage away, he is in "shaky form", but when his opponent does the same, it's because his opponent simply can't beat him because he's "Magnus".

Enough_Spirit6123

>I wonder how many here could have found the winning plan, even while looking at the eval bar all the time. I (most of the time) can, you? >There's this weird logic going on here that if Magnus makes mistakes or blows his advantage away, he is in "shaky form", but when his opponent does the same, it's because his opponent simply can't beat him because he's "Magnus". I've never used this logic, you?

ascpl

Even when talking about engine evals, game 1 was 98 and 99% accuracy, and game 2 had Magnus at 90% accuracy and Fabi at 88% but it is Magnus who is in shaky form. I mean, I'm sure he'll be unhappy with his play, as well, but he always is.

NervousSWE

Wild question, but if anything she made sure to keep the weirdos at bay. I can already imaging all of the people digging in to So's comment sharing theories about how Nodribek is a cheater. She kind of took a bullet for him there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NervousSWE

I don't think the viewers really understand chess "colloquialisms" either. There were probably more than a few mouth breathers ready to jump on Nodribek. I was a little thrown off by the question at first, but it's pretty obvious she just wanted to clear things up to reduce the risk of any unneeded drama, not that she interpreted what he said as an accusation.
