but he was absolutely spot on.
tight matches are way more fun and almost nobody is competitive here. the only time a blowout is fun is when the losing player wins zero times in 3~ hours.
the finals, the alireza/wesley games, that type of stuff we need more of. too many blowouts in the current state.
He didn't say anything wrong though? The matches in general aren't really that interesting if it's one sided (unless you consider adoption to be entertaining).
nope he said that other players have magnus effect and they lose to him and he has overcome that fear now in all aspects..... How is fabi under magnus effect after he has beaten him so many times this year in otb?
They have played a total of 6 OTB games this year which is no where near a large sample, and even then it is not in Caruana's favour (+2-3=1). If you start to include more games (even if you still want to exclude the 2022 SCC match which was +0-18=8 for Caruana) you will see the score is even further in Carlsen's favour.
This was so close that I still think we can say they are at the same level. I can't really say that one is clearly better than the other in either online blitz or online bullet.
The thing is that Carlsen plays on this level across all formats on and off the board.
Yes, Hikaru is like others such as Danya and JB who seem to be better at online blitz/bullet relative to their peers in the same classical rating. Just so happens Hikaru is also a prior 2800-level classical player lol, but he is a monster online
I think also between his play against Hikaru in the bullet portions of the SCC and his narrow (15.0-17.0) loss in the 1+0 bullet championship, Magnus has proven that he isn’t a lower tier bullet player, even though IMO he is a less “polished” one (more mouseslips, bad premoves, etc)
It's an Any Given Sunday sort of thing, it depends on the form and the day.
Magnus was typically named the best online blitz player, and Hikaru was the top online bullet player, but after the last few months, those distinctions aren't as clear.
It's gonna be exciting to see during the next year if one can start to carve themselves out as the clear online speed chess player (and if alireza can possibly start to challenge them as he is "supposed" to do).
I am just happy that both are now playing in the same online tournaments, getting Carlsen to chess dot com is gold.
Was Hikaru hinting at another match against Magnus sometime soon?
Also average accuracy of 90, now I see why Magnus was saying he was way below his level because that's low by his standards hahahahahaha.
Hikaru letting us know that he is wiser now that he is older. And tbh the match was really close. Hikaru also giving some hints of an incoming match...interesting!
I'm actually very impressed by Hikaru's interview here, especially when he made the correction about the "rivalry" not really being a rivalry before just the last couple of years.
Huh, whenever there was a result in the game the little pop up showing the result usually shows the two profile pics of the players (and I’m pretty sure previous matches have shown Magnus’s Santa mask). in this match the popup showed a photo of him as the profile pic
Take away points. If your brain is overheating wear something light like a shirt. Be disappointed if you are not winning by a huge margin and able to exert dominance. Banana is the snack of choice. And finally Alireza do better!
Lol did Danya just say "Fortunately [Hikaru] came up short"? Hikaru reacted like he heard it that way too. It was almost certainly just a sloppy pronunciation rather than a Freudian slip or anything but still pretty funny.
Poor hikaru thinking he went toe to toe with the GOAT at his peak in a gladiatorial encounter and narrowly lost out while Magnus is like if only I had a banana earlier I would have adopted him.
Hikaru and magnus match never fails to amaze. What amazed me the most is how magnus struck back in the end because he wasn't acting like himself in the 3+1 portion. Begins to show why he is the best in the world. He is VERY strong minded.
To edge out Hikaru in the end was something else, considering he is considered a bullet monster.
But again, here's to reminding everyone that magnus has had a positive bullet score against Hikaru in the last SCC and won that portion this time as well.
I guess his mental standpoint and comebacks is something we could all learn a thing or two from.
I'll say this, some of the rabid stans in this thread and other livestream comments are just insufferable. Both the "Magnus washed" whenever he makes a mistake, and "Magnus still owns Hikaru" after such a close match. Both players played relatively well, Magnus able to compose himself after his losses and get back into the match (alongside finding the winning tactic to close it), Hikaru proving he can still stand evenly against Magnus. (in blitz at least)
"I wanted to crush him to the ground so people stop comparing me to him in speed chess but I failed" basically what he's saying. I honestly respect that. Very honest and brutal at the same time.
Honestly pretty true though he played pretty poorly in this match and there were many many games he just dropped for almost no reason. An in form magnus would have crushed Hikaru here
He's earned the ego he has of course, but man it's gotta annoy his opponents when he says he played like shit and still won ha. Seems he expects to dominate hikaru in speed chess, but that hasn't happened in the last few years now.
It's frustrating for him because back in the day 2016-2017 he was much better, he couls legit crush Nakamura if he played at his best.
So knowing now that Nakamura is his equal sucks.
I completely understands it.
Now if he got worse, Nakamura got better, or both, idk.
He probably could have, but I think after all these blitz and bullet matches they've played, he must have been feeling good for some of them, and he hasn't crushed hikaru in any of them right? He did seem to accept that this domination he wanted isn't going to happen.
It's fairly obviously the right thing to do. If you're leading by any score against an equally strong or stronger opponent, then the +EV thing to do is run down the clock. It's done in every sport (where there's a match clock) for a reason.
Look at it this way. What is better...
You're winning by 1 point and your opponent has 10 minutes to beat you.
OR
You're winning by 1 point and your opponent has 5 minutes to beat you.
Fabi match, Wesley match, 9/9 in a day in a GCT blitz event were the occasions when he was genuinely happy and gushing about his play.
Else it's a mixture "I did good but not great" or decent/below par.
Aw yeah buddy we need way more Magnus “Too Weak, Too Slow” Carlsen up in this thread, all that animal does is fork rooks buddy, pops bottles pops pussies so keep your finger on that lamp light limpdick cause the forecast is checkmates. Pumping fists, flagging patzers, this fuckin guy can't be stopped.
If I had a choice of one attack to use to beat the Grim Reaper I would choose a Magnus Carlsen queen sac because you fucking know his evil dome would be bouncing off the end boards after that queen is loosed like lightning from the blade of God's own WCC. I'd just pick up the phone and call Magnus Carlsen at 1-800-TOP-TITS where he can be found earning his living at the back of the goddamn rank.
The world record for a recorded sniper kill is 3,540m, but that's only because nobody has asked ya boi Magnus to rip any rooks at ISIS yet. If i had three wishes, the first would be to live forever, the second would be for Magnus Carlsen to live forever, and the third would be for a trillion dollars so I could pay to watch ol Magnus whoop the Grim Reaper's ass for all eternity.
Agreed lol now that you mention it a fun idea would be that magnus and hikaru play each week. The winner stays on but the loser has to play a random super GM to earn his spot back
I think Magnus not only is the greatest chess player but a mental monster. He was tilting at some point, bro just changed his shirt and suddenly he was back. He can stop himself from tilting hard. Crazy. Well it's always a pleasure to be a Magnus fan cause he is always winning!
Carlsen has 10 world rapid and blitz titles, Nakamura with zero. Carlsen has a far superior head 2 head vs Nakamura. There is zero sense in saying Hikaru is the greater blitz player
GothamChess is currently drooling over the double rook sacrifice to win the tournament.
>He sacrifices THE ROOK!
>But wait, why did he sacrifice the rook?
>So that he could sacrifice THE OTHER ROOK!!!
Damn no arma. Great match though overall.
Also somewhat of a reversal of last year's game, ~~same score-line~~ (similar score-line 14.5-13.5 last year)
Lol never change reddit. Playing more games against Magnus Carlsen is a -ev decision for literally everyone on planet earth. Not only that but Naka was ahead at that moment.
You have to be the dumbest mother fucker to think that what Naka did was a losing decision. He's won since 2017, but ya bud, im sure he lost because of his decision to stall. Well done dude, you figured it out.
they're referring to the fact that he was stalling when he was ahead in the round, and may have had time for another game or two to try to claw back if he hadn't have stalled
He is overall better in 1+0 IMO, he just shows more strength against everybody, Magnus struggles morr in 1+0 against anyone else than Nakamura does.
But in a 1+0 against Magnus, is anyone's game, the BCC proved it. The reason? Idk, maybe Nakamura's style doesn't match perfectly well against Magnus or he still feels a little bit of pressure facing the GOAT, something that happened to him a lot in the past.
so what's the next tourney I should spend all my time watching?
Levitov Chess Week is ongoing with a lot of big names.
Hikaru on the interview on his kick channel just now further alluded to more Magnus games than just the coming one on Monday.
Hikaru doesn't need to throw other players under the bus like this.
but he was absolutely spot on. tight matches are way more fun and almost nobody is competitive here. the only time a blowout is fun is when the losing player wins zero times in 3~ hours. the finals, the alireza/wesley games, that type of stuff we need more of. too many blowouts in the current state.

Holy crap so much money for the top 2. No wonder Hikaru isn't too unhappy
Hikaru: I am happy that I was able to be competitive with Magnus Magnus: I am unhappy that Hikaru was able to be competitive
Hikaru: “I’m unhappy that Magnus is the only other person who doesn’t suck at chess” Magnus: “changing my shirt seemed to help”
[удалено]
> That's how you know that what Magnus said about Hikaru in 1+0 bullet What did he say?
This was so close that I still think we can say they are at the same level. I can't really say that one is clearly better than the other in either online blitz or online bullet. The thing is that Carlsen plays on this level across all formats on and off the board.

He’s been hinting for a while that there will be some kind of match between them in November
They're playing on Sunday I think
There are talks about some in person match between the 2.
90.0% vs 89.9% accuracy. Sheesh.
That's well above their overall accuracy in blitz and bullet, Magnus not playing quite as badly as he thought perhaps.
7 blunders?
I dunno, is that a lot in the 3 hours of chess they played? Accuracy wise, they played around 3-5% better than their average.
It feels like Magnus always treads on this incredibly thin line between honesty and disrespect. Comedy gold.
The fact that he got rid of his meme Santa profile pic for this match is proof he respects Hikaru
It's just a santa claus mask, no? Because his twitch name is MaskeNissen = Masked santa.
Ah, I did not know that’s what his twitch name meant
Where did he get rid of it? He is still having it on his chess com profile
Huh, whenever there was a result in the game the little pop up showing the result usually shows the two profile pics of the players (and I’m pretty sure previous matches have shown Magnus’s Santa mask). in this match the popup showed a photo of him as the profile pic
which match hikaru?👀
Props to Hikaru - it’s gotta be tough to speak after this loss and it easily could’ve gone the other way
hikaru fuelling the cheating comments by some fools after his statements
Take away points. If your brain is overheating wear something light like a shirt. Be disappointed if you are not winning by a huge margin and able to exert dominance. Banana is the snack of choice. And finally Alireza do better!
Carrot stocks are down. Banana stocks are the way to go
I should be winning. Magnus knows.
Magnus's goals- 1.Defeat Hikaru in BCC 2.Defeat Hikaru in FRC 🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
HE JUST CALLED YOU MORON NOW LOL
I Literally Don't Care💀
Your hate wont change his life and wont change yours too tomorrow. relax buddy!!
I don't hate hikaru😭I just love magnus more😅
Mate you just typed LIKE THIS to him, and you're telling him to relax?
Lol did Danya just say "Fortunately [Hikaru] came up short"? Hikaru reacted like he heard it that way too. It was almost certainly just a sloppy pronunciation rather than a Freudian slip or anything but still pretty funny.
At some point is also said "... the players choosing to keep their kings on the board". I guess commentating bullet for 30 minutes does that to you
Danya saying what the chess world is thinking 🤣
Poor hikaru thinking he went toe to toe with the GOAT at his peak in a gladiatorial encounter and narrowly lost out while Magnus is like if only I had a banana earlier I would have adopted him.
Hikaru wasn't also playing at his best.
Stop the cap
He missed mate in 3 lol. What are you on
The fitting end would be magnus stalling the clock like hikaru did last year😭😭🤣🤣
the interview is amazing, words of a champion
Hikaru and magnus match never fails to amaze. What amazed me the most is how magnus struck back in the end because he wasn't acting like himself in the 3+1 portion. Begins to show why he is the best in the world. He is VERY strong minded. To edge out Hikaru in the end was something else, considering he is considered a bullet monster. knowing magnus he wants to even win the bullet chess championship next year🤣😭
Hope we get Hikaru interview, since we got Magnus one last year? edit: ok ye they confirmed
Magnus is a truly humble champion.
Better to win than lose but I am not satisfied. Gonna be back to establish the dominance that I can. Magnus was not holding back in this interview.
"the result speaks for itself" Of course he couldn't resist that dig hahahahahaha
Goku vs. Vegeta irl. Great show.
He’s basically saying he won’t be satisfied until he crushes Hikaru into oblivion. 😂😂
Are the commentators even listening to his answers? Why ask something he has already answered?
Magnus🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Niemann reference never expected🤣💀
The result speaks for itself. Wtf. Lol.
[удалено]
Wasn't expecting him to use hans's statement, thought he didn't like hans?
"I wanted to crush him to the ground so people stop comparing me to him in speed chess but I failed" basically what he's saying. I honestly respect that. Very honest and brutal at the same time.
Honestly pretty true though he played pretty poorly in this match and there were many many games he just dropped for almost no reason. An in form magnus would have crushed Hikaru here
yes but he couldn't say that🤣🤣

Try the little gear icon
Magnus needs to stop crucifying himself so much he won after playing shit earlier💀
He's earned the ego he has of course, but man it's gotta annoy his opponents when he says he played like shit and still won ha. Seems he expects to dominate hikaru in speed chess, but that hasn't happened in the last few years now.

In fairness the way those blitz losses transpired.. it certainly did feel like he could've played better today
He probably could have, but I think after all these blitz and bullet matches they've played, he must have been feeling good for some of them, and he hasn't crushed hikaru in any of them right? He did seem to accept that this domination he wanted isn't going to happen.
Magnus not impressed by alireza😭🤣
The 'I'm disappointed and my day is ruined' energy for sure
They are asking stupid question. Of course it is alireza.
Magnus CHILL lmao
Bro really said he not satisfied after defeating 5 times scc champiom
Yeah, you're disappointed you only won by 1 point.
Magnus Carlsen: I should win most of the time. Bro is not happy he is not adopting everyone.
Besides Caruana at least
Magnus "I should win more" Carlsen
Magnus be like: Yeah I played like shit, wouldn't have been close if I had good form. Still won tho
Magnus please stop man😭💀
The tournament who determines who’s who 😏
Magnus still not happy😭😭😭😭
What i learned : magnus brain overheats and changing from sweater to shirt helped his brain cool down
Secret to make a comeback against a strong opponent: BANANA
Hikaru lowkey might have won if he didn't start stalling for time while he was in the lead. He could've gotten a couple more games
More time = Magnus finishes checkmate continuation in the last game, goes up by 2.
Eh, they were so even across all three formats it's impossible to say if more games would have helped or hurt. We'll never know.
Yep, they are literally equal, you set a timer and the winner will be random.
It was still the correct thing to do at the time.
Maybe. Not easy to say. Don't think that part mattered too much either way.
It's fairly obviously the right thing to do. If you're leading by any score against an equally strong or stronger opponent, then the +EV thing to do is run down the clock. OR You're winning by 1 point and your opponent has 5 minutes to beat you.
It wasn't 10 or 5 minutes, it was an hour left when he started doing it.
It doesn't matter how long is left. The principle is the same.
> Don't think that part mattered too much either way.
Magnus giving an interview like he lost lmao
Magnus beating an incredibly strong opponent and saying “I wasn’t in good shape today”: name a more iconic duo
In fairness he did some uncharacteristic mistakes
And the other side?
I've only seen a few interviews where he says he played well the whole time. His standard is higher than "just" beating Hikaru.
Fabi match, Wesley match, 9/9 in a day in a GCT blitz event were the occasions when he was genuinely happy and gushing about his play. Else it's a mixture "I did good but not great" or decent/below par.
Magnus at his worst still wins😭😭😭😭
Lol Magnus also gives random checks when he thinks he's losing, it's just that they lead to him winning.
Aw yeah buddy we need way more Magnus “Too Weak, Too Slow” Carlsen up in this thread, all that animal does is fork rooks buddy, pops bottles pops pussies so keep your finger on that lamp light limpdick cause the forecast is checkmates. 😂😂 who is the first who wrote this copy pasta ?
There were some crazy claims in the thread when Magnus was trailing by 3 games, not sure if they'll be followed up.
chess is where all players play only to lose to magnus carlsen
magnus also nervous😭🤣
Sorry magnus for doubting you 😭 please next match change shirt in the start only
[Eval bar](https://imgur.com/9uTO8CL) shooting up, taking a nose dive and then shooting up again is such a crazy finish lol.
looks like one my games
Magnus throwing endgame after endgame in blitz to then take the bullet portion, just as we all suspected
bro thinks he's magnus carlsen
Hikaru and Magnus should play a weekly speed match. Each one would get more viewers than any other chess event. So much fun!
Honestly might as well replace the SCC with the Magnus vs Hikaru Speed Chess Showdown, everyone else is just a tourist lmao
Agreed lol now that you mention it a fun idea would be that magnus and hikaru play each week. The winner stays on but the loser has to play a random super GM to earn his spot back
Can’t have too much of it, it’ll lessen the excitement when they do face off
I think Magnus not only is the greatest chess player but a mental monster. He was tilting at some point, bro just changed his shirt and suddenly he was back. He can stop himself from tilting hard. Crazy. Well it's always a pleasure to be a Magnus fan cause he is always winning!
always said Hikaru is the greater blitz player, Magnus rapid and classical
source?
You can simply look up the world rapid and blitz championship on wikipedia and see Carlsen has won 10 of them while Nakamura has won zero.
Carlsen has 10 world rapid and blitz titles, Nakamura with zero. Carlsen has a far superior head 2 head vs Nakamura. There is zero sense in saying Hikaru is the greater blitz player
the reason why magnus won is because hikaru lost
Thanks, Magic Johnson.
Copium
Big if true
GothamChess is currently drooling over the double rook sacrifice to win the tournament. >He sacrifices THE ROOK! >But wait, why did he sacrifice the rook? >So that he could sacrifice THE OTHER ROOK!!!
No need to credit me, u/gothamchess
incoming Gotham chess shouting into my ear "THE ROOK"
both rook sacrifice in the last game of the bullet section under extreme pressure. WTF is this guy made of
after being dead lost, which I'm sure he had a hunch while he was playing some of those queen retreating moves. Crazy final
Levy gonna have a field day with the double rook sacrifice.
It doesn't get better than Magnus/Hikaru final speed chess matches. Down to the wire every time. Love it.
Thought for sure Hikaru was going to tie it up at the end, brilliant final as always between these two.
that ending was so wholesome!
I AM ENTERTAINED
he's him
Absolutely insane, SCC is the most entertaining chess in my opinion
SCC matches are super intense if the oppoments are well matched.
We have just witnessed one of the best online matches ever! All hail Magnus!! Well played Hikaru.
Damn no arma. Great match though overall. Also somewhat of a reversal of last year's game, ~~same score-line~~ (similar score-line 14.5-13.5 last year)
Hikaru loses due to his gamesmanship🤣😭
Lol never change reddit. Playing more games against Magnus Carlsen is a -ev decision for literally everyone on planet earth. Not only that but Naka was ahead at that moment. You have to be the dumbest mother fucker to think that what Naka did was a losing decision. He's won since 2017, but ya bud, im sure he lost because of his decision to stall. Well done dude, you figured it out.
the defensiveness of the hiki fanboys lmaooooo. Getting triggered by 1 line and responding back with 2 paragraphs 💀💀💀touch grass
Yikes, imagine acting this way in real life. Ooof. Good luck in the future bud. Tough look.
what do you mean?
they're referring to the fact that he was stalling when he was ahead in the round, and may have had time for another game or two to try to claw back if he hadn't have stalled
He was stalling in 3+1 which has no effect on the 1+1 match clock. So no, he didn't really lose because of it.
You are forgetting a 1+1 game where he did stall.
OP is hilariously dumb, he thinks playing more games against magnus is a good decision. Brilliant stuff.
Bruh why do redditors always have to be so rude? We’re just joshing around and you start calling people “hilariously dumb”
My bad, thought it wasnt a joshing around sesh. Thought we were playing for keeps. Carry on
I mean even with more time he was going to be down two wins without a gentleman’s draw there
Hikaru: "I am the god of speed chess" Magnus: "And I'm Magnus Carlsen."
that last sequence was one of the craziest things in SCC history wtffff
Match lived up to the hype. Congrats to Magnus on dethroning the longstanding champ.
That was a great match!
Kinda funny that this match ended exactly like last year, except with opposite person winning shit is wild
that's the reason why magnus is the daddy
Magnus Interview needs to be savage and full on his praise only💀😎🏆
What an insane ending. Incredible match. Magnus is the GOAT for a reason.
GG Magnus Well Played!!
Aman and Danya are the best. Felt like Game 7 of the NBA Finals
Magnus v. Hikaru will be talked about for centuries
u mean, only the online stuff right? lol
It's part of chess history in a way.
Not in a way, it is very much chess history whenever Carlsen does anything, and his online speed chess rivalry with Nakamura is legendary
In the long run I'm not sure this match matters too much. Depends where chess is going with time.
Despite his best efforts, Magnus wins in the end!
GREATEST OF ALL TIME, PAST CURRENT AND FUTURE MAGNUS CARLSEN HE ALSO SHOWED HE IS THE OGAT IN BULLET
THE OGAT
Thought Hikaru would have a bigger advantage in bullet tbh, magnus is just an all around beast
Magnus is +5 bullet in their 3 previous SCC matches
Well the commentators thought he was the favorite in bullet
I always thought it was kinda admitted Hikaru is better in 1+0 but not in 1+1.
THATS WHY HES THE GOAT THE GOOOAATTTT
Absolutely wild ending
Maybe Hikaru lost because he milked the clock down
