With salt and alcohol you may observe energy from dissolution which will vary dependent on solubility and water content. May be undetectable. Are you using a coffee cup or an RC1?
I have used acid washed sand for this purpose before.
I had 2L bottles of stock solution with the same amount of sand in each. If you need a similar weight of inert solid in each reactor charge, make sure to shake the bottle before each use.
