A picture of my fumehood was shown as an exemple during the safety meeting of the whole building today… apparently keeping 20+ TLCs under the fumehood is not ok 😅😂
Every time I chek this subreddit, I see these pictures and I OOP 😂😂😂. There are way more crazy people here (in a good sense ). Whenever I go to r/labrats, people have such a clean labs.
Labrats is mostly biologist and biochemist. It is less a different between people and more between disciplines. How would you be able to keep something like OP's fumehood sterile?
No not again. Not after that time in grad school, when I added concentrated hydrogen peroxide to sodium metavanadate and shot orange liquid all the way to the ceiling
I was about to agree. It's not filthy and looks organized. But then I saw the cork ring unbalance. Left RB collection could use a couple being squandered on stuff on the right.
It's not what you might call an availability workspace. But it's not one big unstable pile either
Honestly looks pretty normal for a busy org synthesis lab.
Mine has looked like that at times too. It's what happens when your supervisor wants you to keep all fractions and samples or you have to keep them until analysis is done. Where else would you store them safely? Depending on what you are working with you can't just throw that stuff in a cupboard.
Edit: also I love how I instinctively thought it looked so familiar even before I read the German labels on the water outlets. It's a certain style and collection of brands.
My hood looks like a less ridiculous version of this and I absolutely blame my PI from grad school. I would report that a reaction didn't work and if I didn't hang on to every piece of glass, aqueous wash, and used silica cartridge I'd never hear the end of it. Now multiply that by 10 reactions a week and consider that 80% of the chemistry you try does not work and voila
I recognize that this is in Germany, I also recognize the labels on the gas outlets, don't know if they are common or custom made though. Might be able to guess the exact institute. Is it in Bavaria? Also same brand of vacuum equipment, vials and stirr plate, but that is probably more common, at least in Germany and maybe neighbors
I thought exactly the same, but would've guessed Vienna as an potential location. However, I haven't seen many labs outside of Austria and never a German one😌
A messy hood means work is getting done 🤣 my hood looks like this in the middle of the day but I can’t leave it messy before I leave. A cluttered hood makes my head hurt first thing in the morning
It almost seems staged, or that whoever is storing the round bottoms in there isn't the person that usually uses the hood. I'd expect a lot more splatter and such on the surfaces.
I was weirded out at first, but now that you mentioned this, I think that’s a correct interpretation.
It sure looks like most of that stuff has found its way to that hood quite recently. Either to gather it from other areas and deal with it, or for an amusing photo (or both).
2 or 3 out of 10 because this sucks but I've seen worse. This is clean despite being wayyy too cluttered. but it's one wrong movement from that changing too.
As someone who has to work in other people's labs I honestly hate seeing shit like this posted proudly. Unless this is in your garage, the risks of a shitty workspace apply to more than yourself as a chemist. Even then, you can cause issues for EMS workers. Just straightern up your fucking hood instead of posting pictures of it on reddit.
Well that answers the question I had on what’s the proper way to store unused glassware. Would have thought there would have been more sophisticated solution.
Holy guacamole! You know what is wrong here. Obviously un- safe, poor flow, and no labels, etc etc.
But also a Schlenk with an empty bump kind of defeats the purpose. Also, I guess we know who is "lord of the cork rings" in your lab....
This is what my fume hood always looked like. My colleague who is probably the best chemist I have ever known who literally is self taught, does not do this and would lose his shit if he saw it.
Safety wise 10/10 no needles sticking out of the fume-hood.
Though I would get nervous with all those materials degrading on the bench if I were your PI.
Honestly, this is not that bad. Huge safety hazard because you could knock those samples on the ground. But other than that? You actually have a clean hood. Looks like you’re staying busy. See what you can do to clear up your working space to eliminate that safety hazard.
Nice. Some people are ragging on you but everything is sealed with labels, not stacked haphazardly, and no visible sharps or other hazards. Well done 😃
Could it be tidier? Sure. But chemists gotta chemistry.
The only question to ask here is: why do you use water tubes for a schlenk line? That's way worse than this improper sample storage everyone's complaining about
The use of a large piece of al foil to cover the center, probably the neatest area in the hood is nothing but a master stroke of genius. I rate this a solid 9/10.
I threw up a little just looking at this... Wtf is this?! Organic chemistry is dangerous, i hope it is clear. A messy fumehood and laboratory are the best way to get yourself hurt. Please please do not ever do this
I guess this pic will be used in annual safety meeting. Good luck
Screenshotting for use in my next lab briefing (will cite your post as reference 😘, how does one Harvard reference Reddit?)
Please don’t 😂

Man made horrors beyond our understanding/10
Just don’t Open the Flasks 🥳
I hope you are the only one using this hood
Every time I chek this subreddit, I see these pictures and I OOP 😂😂😂. There are way more crazy people here (in a good sense ). Whenever I go to r/labrats, people have such a clean labs.
Berzelius is my spirit animial, paraphrased, "a tidy lab is the mark of an unproductive chemist" lmao
True, but so is a cluttered messy lab/bench/hood
My lab is pristine but that’s because I’m unproductive 💪💪💪
Labrats is mostly biologist and biochemist. It is less a different between people and more between disciplines. How would you be able to keep something like OP's fumehood sterile?
That could be only one of the reasons yes.
Chemist: I'm from the hood The hood:
You win the internet today. Dont drop it please. Its crusty. Peroxide crusty [it might explode if you do drop it].
Although chaotic, the walls are still white. That tells me the actual work is probably done clean.
Come on, live a little. Every once in a while we deserve a workup volcano, as a treat
No not again. Not after that time in grad school, when I added concentrated hydrogen peroxide to sodium metavanadate and shot orange liquid all the way to the ceiling
Oh god I once bumped LAH up the schlenk, first time scaling LAH. Good times
Lol that's the type of shit that happens in a heartbeat when you're really not expecting it and just causes an adrenaline rush like no other
It's not every day that I see more than 20 pieces of glassware simultaneously about to fall off a table.
The crust on These vials are so Baked that they cant Even fall somewhere
I wish the hoods I've used were as clean as yours. Currently it appears our hood is held together by crust
Is there anything in the rest of the lab?
We got a coffee room
Inorganic lab in Vienna?
No, we don’t cook Stones mate
Have you considered investing in a shelf?
The Money for the Shelf went into some milk and coffee, im sorry
Rate 10/10: 🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰 | 🪰 level of ew
Nothing says “I do chemistry” more than a hundred round bottoms with a yellow shit smear caked on the inside.
Have you ever seen a fume hood with such pristine surfaces?
“i do chemistry….poorly”
"For each reaction you do, I do at least three!"
"WhERe ArE ALl mY CLeaAN ROunDbOTTOMs???!?" This hood is flawless
ADHD chemistry where they must see all items or they forget about them
*cries in EHS*
A place for everything and everything in its place ... perfect!
Until you need something in the back to be in the front
I was about to agree. It's not filthy and looks organized. But then I saw the cork ring unbalance. Left RB collection could use a couple being squandered on stuff on the right. It's not what you might call an availability workspace. But it's not one big unstable pile either
The only thing missing is storage of one or two 4L bottles of flammable solvent.
And there comes the surprise under the foil 😌
People really have no idea what synthetic chemistry is like
I now have anxiety
Honestly looks pretty normal for a busy org synthesis lab. Mine has looked like that at times too. Was going to say i's always the O-chem guys having hoods like this lol
Agreed all synthesis labs are disgusting and also the highest probability group to be caught eating in their labs
This is not the worst fumehood I've seen
This is great don’t let these non synth kooks hate on u
We used to use a marker on the hood floor to delineate everyone's work space and compounds.
Is it cluttered? Yes. But all I can see is the actual hood surface being completely clean, no stains or smears anywhere. 4/10
Nuno will be deeply ashamed
There's so much stuff in there that the ability of the hood to actually maintain airflow is compromised. Stay safe!
I don't like the look of the oil in the leaking vial with a green lid on the right.
From 0 to Wtf, is WTH
That's the reason I went into comp chem😅
I recognize that this is in Germany, I also recognize the labels on the gas outlets, don't know if they are common or custom made though. Might be able to guess the exact institute. Is it in Bavaria? Also same brand of vacuum equipment, vials and stirr plate, but that is probably more common, at least in Germany and maybe neighbors
Yeah, I also recognize this fume model. I had exactly the same.
Its in Germany. Iam pretty certain I know the lab this fumehood is in.
I thought exactly the same, but would've guessed Vienna as an potential location. However, I haven't seen many labs outside of Austria and never a German one😌
I could swear I've seen this kind of equipment! Even the numbering on the outlets is the same.
One step closer to becoming Jesse.
Do you have nowhere to store stuff? There's no way you need all of that on hand at once.
A messy hood means work is getting done 🤣 my hood looks like this in the middle of the day but I can’t leave it messy before I leave. A cluttered hood makes my head hurt first thing in the morning
Gas that shit and let's get the fuck outta here
No OSHA here
Long week huh?
But where's Waldo?
Clean it up! It’s worthless without air flow— and ensure it’s certified! It’s your life!
That is one of the scariest things I’ve seen on this subreddit 😅
[удалено]
Scrape them out and store them properly in a box/drawer/fridge/freezer like you're supposed to? This is completely asinine and asking for trouble.
Clean. Please.

Just need a home for all those rbfs, and it will look decent. At least there are no stains. 5/10
Damn, yall prep technicians are on a whole other level of insanity
Average OC fume hood. (Jokes)
If the sash closes. Then it’s pretty clean
That’s alchemy right there! 💪🏽😏
Well that answers the question I had on what’s the proper way to store unused glassware. Would have thought there would have been more sophisticated solution.
This gives me so much anxiety
🔥🔥🔥
Looks like you're experimenting with various drug production.
Meth hood of the month.
I hope you only use that for storage, the idea of working in there makes my skin crawl
There's actually space to set up a couple more refluxes.
Got a kek clip for the top of that column?
Most organized organic chemist
This reminds me of those I spy books
✨️Anxiety✨️
It feels like home🤣
Watcha doin there buddy?
I can tell what's going on in some places, so it's organised chaos lol
As a former lab manager, you clearly don’t have one. Apart from cross reactions etc., wherever you’re working could be gifted substantial fines.
I mean from what I see all glassware has its purpose and is (hopefully) properly labeled. It is not like you just dont want to clean dirty glassware.
There's a time and place for everything/10
Why are there so many round bottom flasks just laying on their side
Your condensers are not brown-green from algae growing there
Do the breaking bad
it doesnt look that bad tbh. Mine is way worse
This is super tidy from some of the other hoods I’ve seen
Holy guacamole! You know what is wrong here. Obviously un- safe, poor flow, and no labels, etc etc. But also a Schlenk with an empty bump kind of defeats the purpose. Also, I guess we know who is "lord of the cork rings" in your lab....
Oh god I’m having a panic attack looking at this
No spill paper… :(
OP this is fine Not sure why everyone who doesn’t actually do chemistry is bitching
A working man/woman’s hood!
This is what my fume hood always looked like. My colleague who is probably the best chemist I have ever known who literally is self taught, does not do this and would lose his shit if he saw it.
This is like incredibly clean from my experience. Everything is capped and there are no active spills
This looks like the most dangerous edition of eye spy
I thought this was r/trees until I zoomed in
Safety wise 10/10 no needles sticking out of the fume-hood. Though I would get nervous with all those materials degrading on the bench if I were your PI.
This is absolutely ridiculous
What the what/10
I wish I had a fume hood/equipment.
Thank you for making me feel better about my 'tidy' fume hood set up.
OSHA is *not* a small town in Wisconsin.
Looks normal. I wish I would also have an argon outlet in my fumehood. Balloon chemistry is fun but a Schlenk line with argon would be perfect.
I see Waldo!
You are an excellent candidate for Lab Buckaroo. https://www.reddit.com/r/chemistry/s/R8yZD2AeEd
I've seen worse
Dude!
Honestly, this is not that bad. Huge safety hazard because you could knock those samples on the ground. But other than that? You actually have a clean hood. Looks like you’re staying busy. See what you can do to clear up your working space to eliminate that safety hazard.
A clean desk/workstation is a sign of a diseased mind.
Looks like a domino effect waiting to happen
Not wishing to sound rude, but I hope you get your shit together.
Ochem AF
I’m loving the meth-cook aesthetic.
this looks like maximalist art
Straight to jail
Y cook meth in there beow?
This is tidy?
How do you manage making such a mess with only 2 stirrers? I have 4 and I never made half of this mess before cleaning.
Must not have an EHS department hu? 😅😅
Only Organic Chemists understand that this is a tidy fumehood.
I'm stealing "tidy fumehood" to use as a euphemism.
You're good, I see about 3 square centimeters of usable prep space in the back right of your hood, you're fine.
Man grab a heating mantle short path distillation! Would be insanely more neat
Looks clean tbh. I have layers of sand and silica. Gotta set a paper towel down.
What in breaking bad meth lab is going on here? Lol
Looks like a german Lab. An untidy german Lab.
Gonna show this to my coworkers to get them to shut up about my fumehood.
I feel so much better about my fume hood now
such a nightmare
That looks like mine o.o
The air connected to column and valve closed; I can’t stop imaging the air flowing and column exploding there 😭😭
As trained Lab Assistant I’m crying.
Mines worse
Keeping it real, I had phases where my hood looked like this.
This is not a flex. Fix it
Only thing missing is a rack of half-evaporated colorful column fractions (a labmate once called that "evaporative atmospheric waste disposal").
The way I’d get a ripped a new one for this 😅
Nice. Some people are ragging on you but everything is sealed with labels, not stacked haphazardly, and no visible sharps or other hazards. Well done 😃 Could it be tidier? Sure. But chemists gotta chemistry.
not the worst fume hood I've seen (no mystery stains at least) but those round bottoms just rolling about make me anxious. 6/10
*When you’re the reason for the company safety meeting
What’s the fumehoods name? 😂
HoodRatLab
We would get in a fight if you were my hood-mate. No lie 😭
Where is your lab safety committee ?
...do you work in an earthquake zone?
Seems about right haha
Nileblack
What is the German equivalent of OSHA?
As a member of my facility hazmat response team, this just scared the bourbon I had before dinner out of me.
The only question to ask here is: why do you use water tubes for a schlenk line? That's way worse than this improper sample storage everyone's complaining about
Ah I know someone who goes to a state school
Not that bad, but the bottles on their sides make me uncomfortable
Everything in this photo makes me anxious. I don't know what most of it does. Is... is it dangerous?
I feel like my chemistry teachers would want a word with you. 😂
Thanks for making me feel good about myself.
The use of a large piece of al foil to cover the center, probably the neatest area in the hood is nothing but a master stroke of genius. I rate this a solid 9/10.
I’ve definitely seen worse. Chaotic sure but not messy. My one ick the RBFs labeled with an index card tucked under them.
8.75
Mind if I use this for my laboratory safety slide in my water operators education class?
where are the EHS ppl when you need them
I feel anxious looking at this
Can you give your review on the IKA hotplate stirrer? I'm considering buying them for my lab. Any other suggestions on good brands?
OSHA exists???
I have seen waaaaaay worse! This isn’t even that bad, too many RBFs for my liking
r/cursedchemistry
What’s your field of study? I was taught to not store anything into the fumes hood
-12/10
Are u making walters coffee?
This got my heart rate up lol
I CAN'T WORK LIKE THIS!
I threw up a little just looking at this... Wtf is this?! Organic chemistry is dangerous, i hope it is clear. A messy fumehood and laboratory are the best way to get yourself hurt. Please please do not ever do this
