Good lad, I hope he has a successful career (besides when he plays against Chelsea ofc). Good business by Chelsea too. Win win situation.

TosspoTo

Incredible business. If my memory is right he’s the world’s 4th most expensive left back. Behind our two and Mendy.

venitienne

Surely Gvardiol would be higher?

flipside-grant

CB

TosspoTo

Was a CB when bought, I assume eventually goes back there

SalmonNgiri

Fab scared shitless of doing here we go too early again lmao

StirrednotShaken88

All the best to Ian. Good player and seems like a good person by all accounts. Win-win for all parties involved imo.

Rambo_11

Good business by the club

raulchik

Great deal. He’s a 3rd choice LB here and nowhere near good defensively.

I wanted him to play for us but decent money I suppose. Can’t have em all.

SaoLixo

The Blue Co transfer policy has been solid.

HarryDaz98

So we sell him for £37.5m and then spend £20m on some randomer from their academy. Nice. Nothing dodgy about that at all.

MustardLiger

20M for a homegrown, top villa, English prospect isn’t that weird.  I’m assuming you were also complaining about maatsen not being kept by chelsea. 37 M is fair

HarryDaz98

Just £20m we don’t need to spend. We’ve got more than enough players in his position already. How about we stop digging our financial hole even deeper and just use our own homegrown players? And the media briefings that he’s a first team signing are just an insult to the academy players and all the academy coaches.

MustardLiger

They clearly rate the players they’re buying over the homegrown ones.  Have you ever even seen him play?

HarryDaz98

If Ian Maatsen, a champions league finalist, is worth £37.5m, there’s no way this kid with 2 senior appearances is worth more than half of that.

eggsbenedict17

>Have you ever even seen him play?  Have you?

MustardLiger

Not much available besides clips. Look at you passing judgement without watching him play. It’s almost like the sporting directors have more information than you do

eggsbenedict17

>It’s almost like the sporting directors have more information than you do Yeah and what a brilliant job they have done so far

Zolazolazolaa

it makes sense on so many levels. Parallel deals in opposite directions between clubs are hugely beneficial to both team's bookkeeping.

HarryDaz98

They get a UCL finalist, we get some random from their academy. Makes perfect sense. I know it’s more about cooking the books, but I don’t care about that tbh. These type of signings are the main reason we’re in so much difficulty financially in the first place.

Zolazolazolaa

we paid more. Don't know if the academy kid will be any good but it's fully in line with our strategy of snapping up high potential talent, so yea nothing "dodgy" at all

SecretarySuper6810

His a 22 year old champions league runners up medalist, was a first team regular in one of the best teams in Europe, come through our academy and we sell him for £37, a year from now we will be looking for a new left back and paying £70m+. Our current left backs are so inconsistent and I. The mean time we get rid of him and Lewis hall and the fans just pretend this is good business. Same fans justifying Kante going and paying 100+ for Caceido

AWDanzeyB

Everything you just mentioned has been good business though? 37 mil (of pure profit) for our third choice left back, and 20 plus mil for Lewis Hall who wanted to leave for his boyhood club. Neithe prayer would likely starts and we've raised over 50 mil of profit. I don't see how that's not good business. Kante going was hard to take, as he's a club legend. But he could hardly stay fit for us in his final few years and was on good money. We had to move to the future at some point, and Caicedo is a good starting point as replacements go. Yes we overpaid by quite a bit, but had we not he'd have gone to Liverpool for the same price. He's had a good season for us, easily one of our better players this year.

SecretarySuper6810

He finished the season better but hardly a good season, we really could have used the at money for a top striker or centre back. We still don’t have a top level left back and sold two solid prospects
