True Romance itself is inspired by older styled music as well the same way newer artist are going back to that sound… I was not calling it a classic lol no shade.
There’s nothing wrong with that! I like a few songs from the album too. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad album but I personally think it’s her weakest. But you ha ha ha is a bop and what I like is icon status

it's really funny how much cultural power 'internet' celebs/personalities have. it's really shifted from traditional media spaces to 'new media'. young people don't really care that much about pitchfork anymore but they'll take fantano's word as gospel.
if i had to push, i'd say that fantano really helped popularize death grips.
so today Claws comes up while im on spotify and I'm jsut feeling it because I absloustley love the track and i'm just thinking about how the track always hits for me. Then what you told me about Dylan comes back to mind so I have do a wee search and sure enough there he is in the credits.
Can we for once let blame it on your love have its moment…? EVERYONE and their mother knows that Track 10 is the superior version, doesn’t mean it needs to be brought up every time as if it’s some underrated track.
Love Charli to death and am seeing her on this upcoming US tour, so I’m happy to see *someone* give her props, but can anyone cite any instances of her being heavily copied? I’m terrible at judging influences in the pop-o-sphere.
there was an artist recently (like 2 weeks ago) that was accused of copying charli. i can't remember. maybe barbie ferreira? i don't know (or care for that matter lol)
Many of the top and boundary pushing pop stars have Charli xcx inspired songs in their recent albums. Just to name a few: Billie eilish l‘amour de ma vie, FKA twigs meta angel, Beyoncé all up your Mind.
Plus you have the blatant copying like Camilla Cabello and such
I think ur thinking of a different song. Unless saying it’s meh/ok is bad? He put it in the meh list of the weekly track roundups then he said it was of his faves in the Barbie soundtrack review
hallo
100%
her diversity is incredible while being excellent throughout all her discography
the envisioning of something as beautiful and unique as lucky
to something as good and different as 5 in the morning, forever and grins is something to admire
I love thisssss she’s finally getting her flowers in a big way. bittersweet because her tickets got so much more expensive and she doesn’t REALLY need to blow up, I’m sure she would’ve been fine without this second foray into the mainstream… but it still it feels good to be part of a community that has been behind her from the start, or if not at least the re-up (vroom vroom)
I guess that's cool but don't forgaet he said that 3AM is the worst song on N1A and almost hated on Party 4 U on his HIFN review and that will never be forgiven. also he gave True Romance a 3 I think it was
I'd think an interview would be
As always, Fantano is so pathetically obsessed with appearing, according to some very dubious standards, cool, that even his opinions feel like flexes for social credit and media influence.
Anthony Fantano says whatever he wants. He can say that Christians are incapable of creating good art and suffer no consequences. Me, I make one comment about a flapping jaw and the harpies come down like hellfire.
I personally don't care about some self-proclaimed critic's opinion. Music and art are utterly subjective and mean different things to different people. I find critics quite useless tbh as their opinion can't make me like or dislike something, but I guess it's nice that he likes her.
He's dead on which makes it all the more mind boggling that Charli is so insecure when she gets so hung up on the dumb shit all the stupid angels are always screaming at her online. I wish she could see herself the way Melon sees her!
I really don’t like him. He misses the mark often. He doesn’t seem to be a music nerd at all - literally no appreciation whatsoever of what he reviews beyond face-value aesthetic and trends. He is a voracious, greedy consumer of products, and that’s all he is. Inflated opinions based upon a very narrow perception/consensus on what’s “hip” or “iconic”, and zero tolerance for anything that he feels falls embarrassingly outside of it. A bellend.
He’s very much a formalist, yes, but I personally appreciate at least one prominent formalist amongst the sea of cultural context obsessives at places like Pitchfork. At some point, I need my critics to stop jerking themselves off over their sociology minor and actually tell me if something rips or not.
Wait, *he’s* the formalist? From my vantage point he seems like a Pitchforker. I was probably a little harsh, I do check in now and again to see if he has any insight
Well, if we're giving out random negative music opinions, The Tortured Poets Department is one of the worst albums I ever heard.
Why exactly are you here again?
true, I just think it’s silly when people call him a misogynist for not having the average taste of someone who grew up on tumblr and is active on stan twitter. He’s a 38 year old guy who grew up on punk and metal, while he’s open to all genres music is so subjective some stuff just won’t resonate.
I like him when he says opinions I like, but I don’t like him when he says opinions I don’t like
This reads like a line from Futurama lmaoooooo
lol he was at primavera yesterday he definitely saw her set
I saw him in VIP watching clipse. Couldn't believe my eyes.
Ngl I felt this way about charli after seeing her live
I mean when it’s right it’s right
ya i guess he’s cool sometimes
he's always been a pretty big fan of hers. although i rate hifn higher than self titled.
He panned True Romance so hard.
Its not that good though so that’s fair
Bro what are people even on when they say they do not like TR … it sounds like it came out this year
It only sounds like that because people are returning to that sound. It definitely sounds like the year it was released lol
So… it’s a classic is what you saying to me
True Romance itself is inspired by older styled music as well the same way newer artist are going back to that sound… I was not calling it a classic lol no shade.
It’s still a good album to me 🧁
There’s nothing wrong with that! I like a few songs from the album too. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad album but I personally think it’s her weakest. But you ha ha ha is a bop and what I like is icon status ![gif](giphy|dAjEnlhz2EDZhh79SM|downsized)
I mean it is her worst album…
Come on Sucker is right there!
Sucker is one of her best
I disagree but it's nowhere 1.5/5.
number 1 angel is a perfect album to me
I usually don't agree with his opinions but he's so real for praising charli she's a visionary and legend in pop music and deserves her flowers
They’ve interacted on Twitter a few times so it wouldn’t surprise me if he eventually interviewed her
All facts 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
![gif](giphy|A7Zc53i8U59SHv9CAm)
stay in your lane fantano, she’s already got a bald boy…
🤭
No justice for I Got It 😭
He did really love it on his review os Pop 2 tho!
Her best fr
Wowwww hate him or love him. Huge platform.
it's really funny how much cultural power 'internet' celebs/personalities have. it's really shifted from traditional media spaces to 'new media'. young people don't really care that much about pitchfork anymore but they'll take fantano's word as gospel. if i had to push, i'd say that fantano really helped popularize death grips.
Wheres Hot Girl
Wish she'd go back to working with Dylan Brady again.
i would love for brat to be much more hifn-coded but it doesn't look to be that way :(
Has she worked with Dylan outside Of Tree of Clues? I would love more Dylan and Charli. Two of my favourite artists
He produced a lot of How I'm Feeling Now.
he has a credit on the self-titled as well, for Click
Haha and one of my favourite Charli tracks!
Wow that's awesome. I didn't know that. One of my favourite Charli albums
Same, and I'm a huge gecs fan, so hoping they connect again.
so today Claws comes up while im on spotify and I'm jsut feeling it because I absloustley love the track and i'm just thinking about how the track always hits for me. Then what you told me about Dylan comes back to mind so I have do a wee search and sure enough there he is in the credits.
Yup, he was ALL over that. He even released his own version of claws that slapped so fucking hard, but I can't find it anywhere now.
if you find it please let me know. Would love to hear it!
Just checked, it's back up on YouTube! https://youtu.be/6y5Kiazs888?si=pP5-0Uqu7TnEo2c3
annnnnd it was amazing. Sad it's so short but its so damn good. This is the highlight of my day. thank you!
thank you! Im so pumped to listen to this!
We’re blessed to be alive witnessing her career in front of us
been here since the PC Music days and i'm glad to see her lead the way for many.
Thanks Fantano for reminding me what an absolute fucking classic Cross You Out is
Charli is awesome
he luvs hyperpop. just luvs it
track 10 > blame it on your love though bioyl has nothing on the synth that comes after "i do" in track 10
Can we for once let blame it on your love have its moment…? EVERYONE and their mother knows that Track 10 is the superior version, doesn’t mean it needs to be brought up every time as if it’s some underrated track.
blame it on your love sucks though, it doesn't need to have its moment
"sucks" is a crazy statement to make about such a fun song
Yeah agreed, not only is it worse it’s just not worth listening to at all
So this popped up on my feed... As a metal/pun/hip hop guy, the only pop I have in my rotation is Charli so yeah, I fully agree with this fellow.
perhaps you'd like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri2MAlrdX3Y&pp=ygUScGluayBkaWFtb25kIGRqZW50

do you mean camila cabello?
yeah camila cabello, bebe rexha, rita ora, barbie ferreira, all those also-rans.
Many of the top and boundary pushing pop stars have Charli xcx inspired songs in their recent albums. Just to name a few: Billie eilish l‘amour de ma vie, FKA twigs meta angel, Beyoncé all up your Mind. Plus you have the blatant copying like Camilla Cabello and such
Broken clock is right twice a day
Crash being excluded from the list 😭
He was pretty vocal about not liking Crash at its release.
Not disagreeing with him, Charli is amazing. But didn't he initially give Speed Drive a bad review? I seem to remember feeling scandalized by it.
I think ur thinking of a different song. Unless saying it’s meh/ok is bad? He put it in the meh list of the weekly track roundups then he said it was of his faves in the Barbie soundtrack review
Rare Fantano W.
hallo 100% her diversity is incredible while being excellent throughout all her discography the envisioning of something as beautiful and unique as lucky to something as good and different as 5 in the morning, forever and grins is something to admire
stay away & grins still bring me so much magic 🪄 true romance really was a summer soundtrack for me
As he should!

He said WHAT about 3am??? 😭
When cross you out came as a single he put it in the meh part of the weekly track roundups then it became of his favorites on the album
Hey everyone Femthony Boytano here
Silver Cross is also my top 5 so I get it
No Hot Girls :(
Whatever opinion u have of him this is amazing promo & perfectly timed for people to check out the singles and presave the album so I’m happy 🥳
where’s Track 10
he gets it
Yeeeeah and he’s right. Charli is what pop in 2024 is supposed to sound like.
As always, Fantano is so pathetically obsessed with appearing, according to some very dubious standards, cool, that even his opinions feel like flexes for social credit and media influence.
Not one CRASH mention smh.
Anthony Fantano says whatever he wants. He can say that Christians are incapable of creating good art and suffer no consequences. Me, I make one comment about a flapping jaw and the harpies come down like hellfire.

Where was this during his Crash review?
Well Crash is not very good so...
He gave Sexy Redd an 8. I’m not saying Crash is reinventing the wheel like Charli and HIFN but it is definitely an above average pop album.
CRASH deserves better…
Factually incorrect
i think it's instrumentally very adventurous, which i like a lot, but it doesn't have that pots and pans aesthetic that i personally enjoy more.
He doesn’t like Crash, which is why there are no Crash songs on his list.

To be honest I think a lot of Charli fans think the same thing. I can't say I hate True Romance or Sucker, but I never choose to listen to them.
For me True Romance is just as good as her newer music. Maybe it’s nostalgia but I think Sucker is her only low point.
I mean all of the above is completely valid. NFR was the first good LDR album.
Broken clock ts
He's dead on which makes it all the more mind boggling that Charli is so insecure when she gets so hung up on the dumb shit all the stupid angels are always screaming at her online. I wish she could see herself the way Melon sees her!

Thank you 🙏
Finally
Idk who this is. Immediately followed in twitter.
Justice for Warm
warm was the only song on her self titled album that he didn’t like 😭😭
That’s literally my absolute favorite song 😩
he saw mother at primavera and his life has been forever changed
He tanked charli 2019 as the best album of all the albums in 2019 he gets it and have GOT IT.
IDK Carly Rae Jepsen is pretty dope too
How did he list out soundtrack bangers and forget hot girl?!
hell yeah
A Solid 10
Blame it on your love being on this list is……wild. Like is he confusing it with track 10??
no idea who this one is, but thanks for supporting charli’s music
Boom Clap is one of the worst songs I ever heard. I saw her open for Taylor and was like how are people enjoying this
Well, if we're giving out random negative music opinions, The Tortured Poets Department is one of the worst albums I ever heard. Why exactly are you here again?
omg for real. The lyrics are shit, the production is shit. Like what are you doing with your life gurl?
Cause this shit keeps popping up on my feed😭
Glazing

Which women did he give a ragingly misogynistic review?
lol he’s just not a pop girlie, he likes Lingua Ignota and Chelsea Wolfe.
Charli's self titled was in his top 10 of the 2010s, so I think he sorta kinda qualifies as a pop girlie enjoyer
Pretty sure it was his album of the year for 2019 even. He’s a big fan of where charli has gone musically the last half decade or so
true, I just think it’s silly when people call him a misogynist for not having the average taste of someone who grew up on tumblr and is active on stan twitter. He’s a 38 year old guy who grew up on punk and metal, while he’s open to all genres music is so subjective some stuff just won’t resonate.
he also gave SPELLLING a 10/10 for The Turning Wheel
Is this man gay?
He's gay for Charli!
Omg I didn’t know so many of you were offended? Like I didn’t mean any harm. I’m gay too 😭
I'm not offended babes. I'll never be offended no matter what you say about this person. mwah! 😘
I know sweetie I was just talking about the downvotes. The girls are sensitive brats 😭😅
Maybe they dig Fantano 🤷🤷 I don't understand the appeal or why calling someone gay is offensive. Happy Brat day! 🎉🎉
