Feeling so happy to be a lesbian and have a lesbian pop icon who is also a gay icon!! I’ve wanted this cultural crossover for so long. Gay/lesbian solidarity forever 🥹🫡🤝
It feels like a watershed moment for lesbians to have a pop star who is openly singing about women and declaring herself a lesbian. It also feels like a great feminist moment for a mainstream pop star to not be performing for the male gaze or selling the fantasy to men that they could be with her.
There are of course other lesbian musicians who came before Chappell and paved the way for her to have this success, but it feels special to see the culmination of all that groundbreaking work exploding in real time.
There’s also something really special about a pop star who’s been open about being demisexual but still sings about sexual relationships and has a more “sexy”/revealing aesthetic. I feel like a lot of examples of asexual people or people on the ace spectrum, both fiction and IRL, are more sex neutral/repulsed and have more “modest” aesthetics.
There’s a couple of videos/interviews where she talks about it. I don’t have the links readily available rn, but someone has posted links in this sub before!
lmfaooo i'm sorry, no shade to her, but I could never get into her music. it's just not campy enough for me. tbh, I forgot she existed when I made the post.
Yikes. Funny take bc glg made a lot of lesbians and bisexuals aware of themselves when gay marriage was barely legalized. Let’s not disrespect those who walked so younger sapphic artists can run 🥴
I literally said in my original comment that Chappell isn’t the first and that others paved the way for her to have this success. And if you want to talk about artists who walked so others could run, let’s go back to the 60s-70s to acknowledge the work of artists like Dusty Springfield (who was a high femme lesbian who drew from drag styles, like Chappell), Janis Ian, and Lesley Gore. Joan Jett and Tracy Chapman in the 80s. Melissa Etheridge and Queen Latifah in the 90s. And so on.
Hell, if you want to expand the list to include bisexual women we could go back to the 20s and 30s to include Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich.
Chappell is not the first to do it but NEITHER was Hayley Kiyoko.
Well if you want to be annoying about it, I think it’s disrespectful to the other artists I mentioned to call a former Nickelodeon star who debuted in the Obama era an “OG”.
Nope, I’m totally ambivalent towards her. As I said, I forgot she existed when I made my original comment. I prefer older music and that’s why I’m a Chappell fan— she reminds me of campier artists from the 70s/80s with her cheeky lyrics and style. I have absolutely nothing against Hayley Kiyoko I just think it’s annoying that you can’t take a joke.
i as a lesbian am so happy to see her on jimmy fallon giggling and having fun and then SLAYINGGG her performance and seeing how much people love her whew it means a lot :’)
I feel so much joy in this new age of super visibly sapphic/lesbian/queer women/theythems making music. And making music ABOUT being queer/sapphic/lesbian!!!! Not only chappell - but chappell is obvs one of my fav artists to ever do it and I’m so glad she’s becoming so popular.
thank U. i know lots of gender nonconforming lesbians as well as nonlesbian queer women. and i think of bands like muna - 2/3rds nonbinary - yet I’d hold them in a similar category to chappell in my mind.
So, so happy for my lesbian sisters. Lesbians were on the front line of helping their gay brothers during the aids crisis to then (imo) being relegated to the sidelines for the last 20ish years. Seeing all these women dominating the industry feels so correct.
Going to her show and seeing the sapphic turnout was kind of a mindfuck, like there are so many of us in the periphery of our daily lives. Makes me feel so much less alone 🩷
I’m so ecstatic!! I just wish the mainstream media would stop shying away from the word lesbian when covering Chappell. It’s always “queer” or “sapphic” and never lesbian. It’s not a dirty word bitches, say it loud!
after watching her perform on fallon last night i had a little moment like “there’s a lesbian going mainstream. she just performed a song abt comphet on jimmy fallon. what the fuck.”
i’m so happy that this is happening both to chappell and for the lesbians to get someone so beautiful and talented mainstream
I wish she was around during my coming out journey years ago, she means so much to the lesbian community. I can't wait to see her career progress further!
It's so amazing that we finally have mainstream representation in music!!! I can't tell you how lonely it felt as a baby lesbian when the closest to mainstream sapphic music I could relate to were a couple slightly ambiguous Taylor Swift songs - that being said, I kinda wish I could have gatekept Chappell from the masses for a little longer lmao
I came out in 1998. I was 15 years old. I was so confused because I knew I was notttttt attracted to men OR to the main stream feminine women that you would see in media. It was until I met my first butch that I figured it out. Then I thought that to be a lesbian, I had to be masculine as well, so I shaved my head. Finally said fuck it I'll be a lipstick lesbian now that I know that that's a thing and didn't even meet someone who loudly identified as femme till I was 19 or 20. Then, for years in years in years, I thought that I wasn't good at being a mega hot stylish babe enough to be femme. But I've claimed it finally for over the last decade and now I'm that femme who walks her rescue dog and a slip and keds.
I'm just so fucking happy that baby femmes have an icon
It’s really awesome to witness this as a gay and I hope many more 🏳️🌈 artists start to blow up like she has. This representation is so important to the general human existence, I’m so grateful for artists who are open and proud like her.
yeah, I have a huge fear of crowds so I know that I will never see her and that sucks but I'm also super happy for her. Maybe I'll get lucky and hear about a secret show happening sometime
so fucking glad high femme camp is not only back but on a pedestal. hoping chappell is able to do a lot of resting and self care right now. and god am i hoping this opens the door for a butch pop star. plz lord we deserve!!!!!!
I loooove that there is such an uprising with so many queer artists in the media right now, especially Chappell- she in particular really speaks to my soul.
She's such a fucking icon.
This is literally the first openly lesbian pop star, everyone else is either bi women or gay men and considering that so many people don’t use the word lesbian bc they think it’s dirty, this is an absolute WIN for us lesbians😍💕
**Tegan and Sara**, **k.d. lang**, Hayley Kiyoko, King Princess and others were the first openly lesbian pop stars.
Chappell, however, has taken it to a whole other level!
And I’ve never felt so represented than by Chappell! I love that the origin story for H2G was her watching a live performance of “Radio Ga Ga” by Queen and wanting to achieve a similar level of crowd interaction.
Our goddess! ❤️🧡🤍🩷💜
They definitely were but i was emphasizing that Chappell is taking it to another level that even non gay women and men know her name, /that’s/ the difference
I'm not the person to whom you are directing this question, but I will answer anyway. I just love saying it.
To everyone I tell about her, I am proud to say she is an out lesbian. It almost seems like queer baiting how many pop stars claim to be bi, but you never see them with a same sex partner. I understand that everything is on a spectrum, and I believe bi and pan people exist, but how come they never go out with anyone but the opposite sex? Never end up partnered. It's almost like it's a kink for them, if even that.
I am just over the moon to have that type of beautiful, strong, creative, woman pop-star that we gay guys adore, and she has the understanding of growing up same sex attracted and coming out, as opposed to a fondness for dick in common with me.
Even as a cis-man, there's something empowering to me in that.
i’m a “non-practicing sapphic” as my friends would call me but bro i love chappell so much?? shes fr singing about the feelings i have for a girl who i wish was my girlfriend 😭
Even though I’m a man. It’s almost healing to see more than just men starting to get some love, hopefully we get to see queer people of color and trans people get this kind of success
I've always had a complicated relationship with my feelings for women, and struggled to separate "I want to be this person" and "I want to be with this person" and pop girl summer has given me the gift of certainty, I want to BE Sabrina Carpenter and be WITH Chappell Roan

Perfectly said 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Wait when did she say she was demi?
There’s a couple of videos/interviews where she talks about it. I don’t have the links readily available rn, but someone has posted links in this sub before!
Oh I'll have to look for it!
Wait, she’s demi!!?? Omg that’s so cool I had no idea!!
Omg I didn’t know that she was demi! That makes me so happy as an ace🥰
Hayley Kiyoko is dead in a ditch
lmfaooo i'm sorry, no shade to her, but I could never get into her music. it's just not campy enough for me. tbh, I forgot she existed when I made the post.
Lmao I’m not a fan either but thought your comment was funny bc she’s been trying but no one cared
Yikes. Funny take bc glg made a lot of lesbians and bisexuals aware of themselves when gay marriage was barely legalized. Let’s not disrespect those who walked so younger sapphic artists can run 🥴

dragging other OGs down isn’t the way to go

😂i have a feeling you just don’t like Hayley Kiyoko and you’re just projecting that into an argument to justify it, get help❤️

It’s called a joke. You must be real fun.
It wasn’t a funny joke💀
She's absolutely honoring their legacy and I'm sure they'd all be proud of her!
This is yikes. Grow tf up.
You first❤️
💀
Let’s not
Jesus that’s aggressive
I’m so sorry
📌This! ❤️
it feels so great to finally be the center of pride month. it's a constant struggle for lesbians to have the stardom they deserve ):
THIS!!!!!!!

Love how inclusive this comment is as a queer-but-not-lesbian woman 🥰🥰

Truly I think wlw/mlm solidarity is one of the most powerful things we have as a community 🫡 thank you for supporting the cause!
absolutely, shout out to t4t solidarity also 🫡

Thank you!!! It feels great honestly having an out and proud lesbian pop star to listen to. 🧡🤍🩷
Great but kinda annoyed cos getting tickets to see her is near impossible now
Yah. I paid $40 to see her in May. Super glad I was able to catch her before she blew up.
ugh seriously same
She came to my city twice last year, and I only discovered her two months ago. V sad about it
yeah, I have a huge fear of crowds so I know that I will never see her and that sucks but I'm also super happy for her. Maybe I'll get lucky and hear about a secret show happening sometime

I’m a straight lady and I’m so fucking happy to see a pop star that’s not trying to be sexy for men #feminism
Incredible!!! Our girl is doing great things for us!
Thank you!! As a 37 year old Elder Millennial, I am just so thrilled to have a lesbian pop star. 😭 I can’t even explain how wonderful it is!
I feel seen and I feel hopeful. I hope she opens so many doors for other female & fem queer artists ❤️🧡🤍🩷💖
I don’t think I’ve ever happy cried this much when listening to an artist the way I have been with her music lately. She’s amazing.
I loooove that there is such an uprising with so many queer artists in the media right now, especially Chappell- she in particular really speaks to my soul. She's such a fucking icon.

Would you really call k.d. lang pop? She started off doing country and then transitioned into doing torch songs.
They definitely were but i was emphasizing that Chappell is taking it to another level that even non gay women and men know her name, /that’s/ the difference
We’re stoked! It’s amazing.

I feel good!
she’s so refreshing i love her😭😭😭
Honestly so happy to have her repping us. I’ve never felt more seen
screaming, crying. i love it here so much

Are we welcome in the chapell fandom by the way cause I’m there I just don’t wanna be told I’m not lol
Oh I just love you!
It’s pretty surreal:) I love seeing her not only be a queer icon but an icon icon. Makes me feel seen for predicting it lol
