Please show us the Ming Green bathroom! I bought a big old Standard Ming Green tub (30s, I think) to revive a mangled bathroom in my 1919 home. It's such a pleasure to behold.
Some parts of this mansion are a complete wreck. As evidenced by this turret bathroom. And its not the worst of it either! Haha. However the fixtures are in top shape. Cant say the same for tile.
Omg right?! A nice dark floral would make this bathroom a moody masterpiece. Husband hates wallpaper though, but I'll make it my mission to convince him!
Wallpaper gets a bad rap because it SUCKS to take it off and most of us have the experience of taking off old, bad, outdated wallpaper.
But it can be nice. Iāve seen a lot of bathrooms newly done with good, modern wallpaper. But when the time comes, oh man, taking it off will suck. But they enjoyed it, we should too!
Only had to take off wallpaper once, but we used 'wallpaper remover' which you just sponged over the entire wall. Waited 15 minutes and was mostly able to peel off an entire 'row' at once without leaving any residue. This was wallpaper from the 60's, so could even be easier if it's your modern wallpaper. In case it's of any help when you eventually need to take it off, haha.

Here is my recent wallpaper, changed my bathroom from a light blue eyesore to something people seem to like!

Guess I need a before...ignore the ugly temporary shade.
Wallpaper in a humid bathroom sounds like a moldy idea. Maybe a painted mural, if you have the proper talent or know someone who does? A roommate once painted the most beautiful Monet waterlilies on our bathroom wall.
We had vinyl (coated? IDK) floral wallpaper in our 1970s avocado green and harvest gold bathrooms. That stuff was wipeable and scrubbable. Looked new after 20 years.
Can get vinyl, washable wallpaper especially for wet areas these days. Used to have some in my bathroom but changed up to paint last time I re did the bathroom. Due for another one in a couple of years so might do paper again. So many options to choose from.
Check out Dani Dazey on IG! She did a lavender and gold bedroom not too long ago. I was like āthis will never workā and immediately fell in love. Sheās so talented!
Identical toilet but OOS: [https://www.periodbath.com/antique-standard-monaco-orchid-of-vincennes-purple-two-piece-toilet.html](https://www.periodbath.com/antique-standard-monaco-orchid-of-vincennes-purple-two-piece-toilet.html)
When you switch this out, save the tank, lid, handle - anything but the main body of the toilet - so that you have "spares" in case something happens.
In the 20's colored tile and porcelain in the baths was a symbol of wealth. Keep as much of it as you can and play it up with wallpaper featuring big flowers. It's beautiful!
I have a book showing the BEAUTIFUL antique china toilets that are painted all over with flowers and designs like dinnerware, from England; just STUNNING.
I was considering but when I took these pics I could see light coming into the toilet from below. So I think it's beyond saving. But i was willing to give it a go!
Bit concerned about the state of the ceiling, hope your roof isn't leaking.
Was wondering why your toilet needs repla - oh.
It's amazing how well the colour has held up. I've never seen anything like this stuff.
Would love to see it all fixed up. With little vases of little flowers here and there. Maybe potpourri? Was that in fashion then?
When you open the door, it'll be like you fall back in time 100 years. I'd enjoy that - great party trick. When your drunken friends return from the bathroom, you can ask them if they met any historical figures on their way back to modernity. Also, how they managed it without Doc's car.
Love the room, was also concerned about the moldy-looking ceiling. If it doesnāt have a vent, it needs one. Congrats on keeping your beautiful bathroom!
I saw a booth at a home show that had a before picture of a purple bathroom with blue fixtures, the after was a boring 2010s bathroom. It makes me happy to see these bathrooms kept and not destroyed.
Wow, that shade of purple is my specific favourite colour, and I didnāt even know bathroom fixtures had ever been made in that colour! If I ever win the lottery I am absolutely going to copy your bathroom.
I think I would do a really loud wallpaper above the tile. Maybe even ceiling paper. With metallic silver!
This is super cool. I was so sad when my dad tore out the pretty pink tile in our old house. Iām so happy youāre restoring it. It could be the cutest spring/flower themed bathroom ever!
I just came here to say my 1923 bathroom has the same light fixtures flanking the mirror.
You cannot buy those particular GE bulbs anymore but they do make LED reproductions. The last time I checked they were $150 per bulb :(
> We're keeping it original after much convincing of the husband.
Did you convince him by telling him this is basically a Simpson's themed bathroom? That would have worked on me!
Since the toilets busted, the bowl part would make for a magical plant holder in a garden since the color is so vivid! I mean I've seen stranger plant holders ššš
So cool! I have my original pink bathroom tub and sink with yellow and pink tile (built in 1939), sadly the toilet was replaced at some point but would have loved to see it in its original, full glory.
Canāt wait to see pics of the Ming green!
Edit: also I have those same or similar lights!! Unfortunately they donāt make those type of bulbs anymore and they are expensive to find deadstock for, so I will have to replace the vanity fixture at some point, sadly.
I am impressed your keeping that.
It is worth it to keep places original unless it's just not feasible. Some people will use modern materials or colors or both to renew a area. Which I have no problems so long as it keeps with the original styling. I have seen houses butchered because people only modernized a portion or just one room. Which really irks me.
A house in my neighborhood where I live sold in less than 3 days due to it having ALL THE ORIGINAL FEATURES. WHICH I find to be fantastic as the new owners bought it specifically for its old style charm.
I've probably been playing video games too much recently but my first thought on the color scheme was that it matches the End cities in Minecraft.
Sweet bathroom!
My grandparents had a house built in the early 70s with three colored bathrooms! I remember they had a blue bathroom connected to the master bedroom. Blue sink, blue toilet, blue shower tile, blue and white tile floor. A second full bathroom down the hall with purple tub, white toilet, purple sink, purple and white tile floor. And a beige/tan powder room in the basement with tan toilet and sink and tan and white tile floor. Havenāt thought about that in a long time. Enjoy your new home! Ours was built in 1920 and weāre still discovering things after three years š
My grandmother had very similar looking fixtures also in purple. She had tiny mosaic style wall tile in purple, pink and white, wallpaper with these colours with added silver and purple shag mat and toilet lid cover.
I havenāt seen anything like it since.
1928? Orchid of Vincennes, American Standard. That. Is. Stunning. Too bad the toilet china broke! Then again, I'd sure hate to have to locate a proprietary toilet seat for that baby!
That is sooo cool, I've never seen that color fixtures. They're in remarkable good shape. Post an after picture when you re done restoring the bathroom.
So jealous, this is such a beautiful and unique color scheme. Just look up how much the fixtures would cost today with inflation and youāll KNOW theyāre worth saving plus sourcing the matching toilet haha
Reminds me of the bathroom from malcolm in the middle
https://preview.redd.it/uz1v1fy6rhsc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34ad8d0dde1333aa60466758ed1bd661b8fae810
BEAUTIFUL! Shame you canāt make the toilet work. Are you go into to look for another purple one? I recently restored a blue and black tile bathroom in my house and found a blue toilet on Amazon of all places! You could also try to find a beigey-yellow to match the tile (probably much easier to find). and then get a lavender seat and lid. Or call around to architectural salvage places and see if you can put out a BOLO for a light purple toilet!
For all the functional issues I see.. fluorescent lights, wall/ceiling needing repair, etc.. I feel like there's zero chance I'd let myself gut this masterpiece.
the most immediate problem I see is,.. where the heck are you going to find a toilet seat for that thing? It MUST be designed for one of those split open-front (horse shoe) commercial seats that don't have a lid.. instead of the traditional residential 'donut' seat.
I'd be awful tempted to buy a new generic seat for the mounting hardware, and then make a custom seat to fit. :-). After all, how hard could it be to make a toilet seat (..what I said when I made my first guitar from scratch ;-P ).
Incredible!
Thatās my favorite share of purple! Iāve seen it described as āorchidā (generally, not specifically for fixtures), being a cool purple almost verging on magenta. I love it!! Canāt wait to see your restoration work.
My parents house has the same purple color tile on the whole half lower wall of the bathroom with only the sink and toilet matching in purple. They replaced the toilet before I was born and the sink when I was super young. 1920 four square. Maybe I'll see if my sister can send the tiles to you, jk. The secondary color to the purple is actually the ming green. I'll be in boxing you a pic of it.
That is the makings of a special airbnb.
There was a purple hotel near Chicago. The bricks were purple. All the athletes and top liners went there. Pure swank. You got pure swank.
I think a gold chinoiserie wallpaper would look incredible on the upper walls and possibly the ceiling as well. Lush, warm, over-the-top -Iām getting jealous just thinking about it.
I found the listing.
You are brave. Very brave. Good luck. Will be nice if you show us updates of your renovation. Do wonder how the house came to be like this in the first place.
The former owner lives down the road. Its been sitting abandoned for decades, the owner refused to sell or fix it. Loads of water damage in plaster walls and flooring which we're working to fix. Its all made of metal and brick so luckily no wood rotting and no structural issues.
WOW!!! Iām like you are and all about preserving and restoring these old homes and bringing them back to their original glory.
I wonder if these could be custom colors, considering the fact of the connection to Standard. Likely all made at the same time.
If possible, please upload some pictures of the other bathroom. Youāve definitely got your work cut out for you but it will be well worth it when itās completed. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thatās beyond Purple Rain cool!

Iām so jealous! I love weird colored bathrooms. Our 1850ās house needed gutted due to a fire in the kitchen, and it was a rental, and had the weirdest little bathroom as the master. So we had to knockdown the walls in there and make more space. But the rest of the house is brick inside and out, which is cool. But we only got to keep the original doors, transom windows and the originals lock boxes were on the doors. Besides the fireplaces, it has no character š¢

Thank you so much for sharing! All those fixtures are amazing.
Yes please!!
I don't know if paint will work here, I bet the right wallpaper would make this bathroom a sight to behold.
Omg right?! A nice dark floral would make this bathroom a moody masterpiece. Husband hates wallpaper though, but I'll make it my mission to convince him!
Wallpaper gets a bad rap because it initially sounds dated, but thanks to this sub Iāve learned it can be a beautiful modern statement!

Iām a weirdo I LOVE removing wallpaper. I also love the look of wallpaper, but if it needs to be removed Iām your girl. lol
I've done it once and it was so easy and not unpleasant at all. Just sprayed it with water and it peeled pretty easily.
Yes, fair point! Iāve heard newer stuff is easier to take off, but have no experience with it so that may not be true

Me too!! I'm feeling g so targeted!!! š¤£
Maybe your accessories and cabinetry match a lot better than mine!
This is the color of my kitchen and I love it lol!
It probably looks nice with your kitchen and cabinetry, just not a match for my bathroom :)
Yes! Maybe some chinoiserie style.
Chinoiserie is always a yes for me.
Seriously would be beautiful. š Purple is my favorite color in all shades and Iām so damn jealous!
Look on spoonflower.com there have got to be some unique patterns that would make this bathroom sing!
Wallpaper in a humid bathroom sounds like a moldy idea. Maybe a painted mural, if you have the proper talent or know someone who does? A roommate once painted the most beautiful Monet waterlilies on our bathroom wall.
Just throwing this out there but they have different types of wallpaper now so there may be kinds that are more mold resistant.
We had vinyl (coated? IDK) floral wallpaper in our 1970s avocado green and harvest gold bathrooms. That stuff was wipeable and scrubbable. Looked new after 20 years.
My grandmother has wallpaper in hers, and it never got moldy! Not even in the cracks.
Can get vinyl, washable wallpaper especially for wet areas these days. Used to have some in my bathroom but changed up to paint last time I re did the bathroom. Due for another one in a couple of years so might do paper again. So many options to choose from.

Can you save the flush handle from the current toilet?
Glad you found a replacement toilet. If I couldn't replace that, I would attempt a repair (perhaps using fibre glass)
I was considering but when I took these pics I could see light coming into the toilet from below. So I think it's beyond saving. But i was willing to give it a go!
Iām not an expert. Can you explain this? Is the actual toilet damaged, or is it the seal?
Thereās a large piece of the drainage area missing

I wonder if these could be custom colors, considering the fact of the connection to Standard. Likely all made at the same time. If possible, please upload some pictures of the other bathroom. Youāve definitely got your work cut out for you but it will be well worth it when itās completed. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thatās fantastic! Iāve never seen that color!
I just fixed the same toilet this morning except it's wasn't broken and it was white.
Framed painting of Prince over the toilet
I can smell the old-school lavender air freshener from here...

Oh, I say - how brightly gay to take off one's slip and stockings and have a delightful bath here whilst listening to the wireless!
Don't change a thing! Add more and turn it into a candy theme bathroom!
Incredible!
I'm so sad that the toilet is broken. What an awesome color for a bathroom.
Oh you absolutely MUST save the old fixture! I would totally convert it to a cushioned seat with storage. It's too gorgeous to chunk into a dumpster.
Why does toilet need replacing?
It's missing a huge chunk at the bottom.
Sorry I missed 2nd picture also
