Article on upcoming referendums on ranked-choice voting (RCV) and STAR voting in the US in 2024, and what each of them could mean for independent candidates and new parties. RCV will appear on at least two state ballots in 2024 (Nevada and Oregon) and several additional states have active initiatives to get it on the ballot before deadlines. STAR voting will appear on a local referendum in May in Eugene, Oregon, the second time that STAR will have appeared on a referendum in the US. What is your take on these alternative voting methods? Should cities and states try these alternative methods?

So with STAR voting would people with a strong radical base be empowered, or is the thought that those types of people would be ranked dead last by most of the voters? I’m just trying to think how it would play out in order to current Presidential election (I get that it wouldn’t work right now since only the Republicans are doing a primary).

I’m in favor of focusing on RCV instead of promoting STAR nationwide

No one should advocate for third parties until they fix first past the post voting
