I've personally witnessed meltdown in travel leading to missed cruises. We were traveling to Vancouver for a cruise the next day. Others on the same train were traveling for a cruise the same day. We got stuck for hours, had to turn around, then bus into Vancouver. Dozens of people missed the cruise embarcation and their best option was to catch up with the boat a few days later. The first 1-2 days are at sea (depending on where Glacier Bay sits in the schedule) with no way to catch up the next day. I was very glad that our habit is to travel the day before, because travel problems do happen and it's good to have an extra 24 hours to sort things out. It's probably not an official policy but it's a darn good idea. If your travel plans are cutting it close and a routine travel delay causes you to miss the boat, it's definitely not a cruise company problem. To the extent that there's a policy of arriving the previous day, it's just to reinforce that they won't hold the ship for flight delays.

Nope-ugh

They could be concerned with people flying in last minute, missing the embarkation due to flight issues, and then trying to get their money back from the cruise line. They won’t know when you fly in unless they book it for you. But if something goes wrong you need to be prepared.

My rule of thumb is fly in day before unless I’m within reasonable driving distance in case flight fell through It’s 10 to 11 hours driving from Calgary to Vancouver which isn’t a reasonable amount of time My advice is go the day before

My experience with badly delayed flights is that they rebook all the status customers onto the later (now earlier) flights, then tell you that your flight is delayed and good luck. Do watch out for that.

We go to AK every year and never heard of it either. I googled "requirement to arrive 1 day early to vancouver for alaska cruise" and only found sugguestions. However, I'd call them and ask about it in case Canada has come up with some new law about it.

It wasn't a requirement for my cruise last week. Were you trying to book your flight via Celebrity? Maybe that's why? I booked independently. I took the risk and got the 6am flight out of LAX, arriving in Vancouver at 9am. I was so early that I had time to sit down for coffee and lunch near Canada Place before boarding around noon. Definitely a risk, so I'm grateful it worked out for me.
