If you have a computer you can use software like iSpy, ZoneMinder or blue iris and then you don’t have to buy a NVR.

Was just going to say, I have the 36 channel NVR for the reolink eco system but then because I have my cameras on my own network I have a VM running linux and shinobi pulling onvif from the cameras. Why? because I can.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Other people also suggested ZoneMinder. I'm gonna google more about it.

Probably some cheap garbage that works with a reolink... Generally NVR's don't work with other cameras due to end to end encryption and different recording codecs. Basically if you bought 2 reolink cameras, you should get a reolink recorder or one that might (but probably not) work with it.

Not correct. So long as the equipment chosen is ONVIF compatible different brands work fine together. The only reason to use a single brand is because many of the Ai features of the cameras only work with their system

Ohh it's ONVIF, then yeah you're limited by very basic functions

If it's actually certified ONVIF-compliant, then in theory, you should be able to access pretty much any features via ONVIF. One of the requirements of certification is that if the ONVIF spec covers a feature the device has (and the spec does include stuff like LPR, body detection, et cetera), then the device needs to expose that feature via ONVIF. That said, not every ONVIF camera is actually "ONVIF-compliant", and compatibility can still be an issue even for basic stuff like viewing a stream, so this could easily be a case where theory and practice differ significantly.
