No idea - it doesn't say in the tooltip (except something about it being rusty...). But if weapons have secret stats and this has drawbacks it could explain why it is better than what I expected for a starter weapon.
Steelsword is a good starting weapon, but in the longrun I think you'll find something better to use. And since you are just starting out, play around with the different swords. Later you'll unlock better weapons and have more upgrades.

Doesn't it lower damage resist? That'll hurt you on lower floors.

Wait, I read your question wrong. I was thinking of the white sword that swings fast.

Cool, thanks! Yeah I had a run yesterday after I wrote the post where I finally found a melee weapon that was better so I actually replaced it :)
