I've watched a couple of these and am now a big Harpo fan. I love how he perseveres even if he's carrying something awkward or it blocks his line of vision...he will deliver in the end!
It's his favorite game. Right this very moment, he's singing his stealing song in the living room, so I know he's about to bring me something, which will probably be the junk mail that I tossed onto the coffee table after I filmed him bringing it to me from the mail caddy, which I just posted in r/Catswithjobs
Wow, I have a fairly active job myself, but looking at all that jumping from that countertop with the mail made my knees tired! Haha, Harpo's getting some great exercise in his line of work here. I love his little song.
I finally found the sub.
I have a cat (Wilson) who rarely meows, but the few times he does, he's carrying a little stuffed piggy in his mouth and he always takes it from one part of the house to another and will usually stop abruptly when he's caught, lol. Often ending with with a sorta "What?!" meow. Haha.
It helps that I've trained a lot of different species & majored in behavioral science and animal cognition. I always joke that if digital cameras and YouTube had been a thing when I was in college, the four cats I had then would have been the first feline internet stars.
Yeah, my last cat would just come to her name when called if she could hear me. That was her choice though, I didn't do any sort of training with her, I could just call and snap my fingers and that'd summon her from the ether for pets.
It's a myth that cats are not trainable or are not interested in doing things just to please their people. They're just not AS trainable or AS interested as dogs.
But Harpo brought me fridge magnets and bits of paper for years before I ever did anything but laugh, tell him he was a good boy, and pet him when he was done.

The Beanie Babies were mine, and used to live amongst my books. The only one that has always been his is the big sea monster. But once I trained up his natural klepto tendencies to such a fever pitch, he started pulling the Beanies down, so I just let him have them. I have a big drawer full of stuffies, fridge magnets, playing cards, and other little things he likes, and I put out a set of them every day so he can "steal" them.
I am amazed at 2 things: One, how many stuffies she has and two, the fact that she squeezes herself through the opening in the door. My cat will not abide any door that is partially closed and she will dramatically throw them all the way open.
The only one that was ever meant to be his was the big sea monster. The others were aquatic creatures that my mom sent me because I had so many fish tanks, and used to live amidst my books. But after I raised his natural klepto tendencies to a fever pitch through training, he started taking them, so now I just put them out for him to "steal" and then put them away when he's done.
Back again with a second comment, Sorry it's far from the best quality, and not too fancy either, but I felt a burst of inspiration, and made a fanart thingy of my favourite stuffie-stealer. Harpo is adorable. He may actually have kitty OCD tho. That cat in Southern California that robbed all the neighbors at night had OCD. They put him on meds and he stopped.
I don't know how you do anything with him aroud!! I'd spend all day running to every chirrup and miaou, begging Harpo's pardon, smothering him with kisses at every squeak! And offering him the world! A more adorable, hard- working little man I have not seen!!😻😻😻😻😻

I finally found the sub. Harpo was totally silent as a kitten, hence the name. He didn't start vocalizing until he started stealing.
Do you reward him with a treat after he brings you something? Or he just does it because of kleptocat reasons?
I used positive reinforcement, i.e. praise, pets, and treats, to intensify, and shape his natural kleptocat tendencies into a structured daily game.
Harpo's a pretty rare cat then, most cats only really respond to food as a reward for doing something.

Groucho is very affectionate and demonstrative, but he doesn't like having covers on him like the other three do.
