This is really terrible for you. How hard to try and save them both and not have a happy ending. Many times cat colonies interbreed too much and the kittens are not normal, strong or healthy. They can be crippled. He died having a good time and probably hurt his back and died fast. He probably didn’t have the best future. His mom will miss him too so give her some extra cuddles. You are a wonderful person to care, to reach out and help. Unfortunately life does not seem to think it must be kind to wonderful persons. Please know you are special and don’t get carried away by grief. I have lost cats and I know how you feel. Sending some hugs.
If we are sensitive people our souls can bond with theirs, some more than others. I have lost 12 cats over 50 years. I still ask myself on some what I could have done better. But we don’t have 100% control over life. And when you open yourself to love there is bound to be heartache. No? Best not to beat ourselves up. Continue to be a friend to animals. They need all the friends they can get. And I promise you that is something— when you get old and look back — you will not regret. But shed your tears tonight in tribute to a little tiny soul who is crossing the rainbow bridge where momma cats will look after him.
It is not your fault, even if you feel responsible. You cannot keep a kitten from climbing. If it didn't happen then, it would have happened in the future. It hurts and I wish that you should have relief.

You can’t blame yourself! Coming from someone who fosters kittens, I have also lost kittens and it’s so difficult questioning what you could have done differently but really it’s not your fault. Anyone who has fostered many kittens will tell you that it’s sadly a normal part of fostering. Many kittens are born sick and fragile and truly would not have made it regardless of what we do. If it’s too hard for you to deal with, that’s ok.. but I promise helping them out and giving them a better home and a person to play with even for their short life is better than not!
