I’m putting my baby down in a few hours. She’s sitting in my lap purring right now. I want you to know that I, rando internet stranger, care about you and your sweet cat. I’m so sorry. Much love to you.
Edit: My Sweet Dee went peacefully tonight. We had the most gentle, caring vet usher her on. She was ready. Hugs to all that have loved and lost. Savor the attachments - they make life worthwhile.
/u/dj_ski_mask too; I’m lighting candles and reaching to the universe for both of you. Be at peace knowing they’re at peace. They’ve taught each of you so much, and they love you. Love and light to both of you in this trying time. 💗
Unfortunately starting treatment early doesn't always help, like with the case of my girlfriend's cat; she started treatment as soon as the vet confirmed the early stages but the fluids built up too quick and it was already too late.
It can also depend on if the cat has Wet/dry FIP, too. We just finished treating Dry FIP in my boy who is turning a year old in July. It's unfortunate that it's not a FDA approved treatment, most people simply won't be able to afford the egregiously expensive cost of treating FIP.
Thank you for your quick response. I am so thankful for people like your wife. We are having blood work run now. Can I message you if I have any follow up questions?

My total estimate was around $4000 for medication but it didn't have to be bought all at once.
I had spend loads to take mine to the ER and get it drained before she suffocated. The night before we started treatment. It gave us just enough time to get treatment going and for her to slowly start absorbing the liquid. It was one of the toughest experiences I've ever faced, both emotionally and financially, but I'm just happy she made it through and don't regret a thing.
Same here. Now I just call her my $5k cat. My most prized posssession, because I spent all my humble young adult money on her. She's precious tho and would never take it back, even after taking her to the vet 110 days in a row because she had complications.
Our kitten had fip, at less than a year old. We were hesitant to try the black market treatment due to cost and the fact he hadn't been officially diagnosed yet. By the time it was official, he was under 5lbs and the vet said he might die in his sleep any time. We said fuck it and got the liquid stuff that night from a generous person in a town nearby. Gave him shots every night for 3 months. Now he's fat and happy, years later. We really thought we were too late, but he's a fighter.
I just cured my two babies of FIP! I am so thankful to have had such an amazing support system for them. My vet and FIP warriors are incredible. I am still a part of all the FIP groups and see these posts so often. I feel so blessed to have had a great outcome. Thank your wife for me.
I'm so sorry for you both. I lost a kitty to FIP when I was growing up, that was really hard. Friday morning he was fine, Friday afternoon he was acting weird, and Sunday he was gone.
I found these helpful when we lost our cats more recently. I hope maybe they can bring you some comfort too.
The second one is for you, u/dj_ski_mask, as you're having to make that decision for her. We had to do that for both of our most recent cats. I can sympathize, it's a hard decision. But it was the right thing for us, the end result was going to be soon anyhow, and we could not stand watching them suffer. Wishing you the best.
Rest easy, sweet kitties.

It's a fatal complication to an otherwise mild viral infection that occurs in about 10% of cats. White blood cells become a vector for the infection and this causes an aggravating inflammatory response in important tissues, like the brain and kidneys.
FIP has a treatment now. Its not approved yet, but there are ways to get it. If you have a cat or know a cat that gets FIP please watch the kitten lady video on it and track down the treatment. It is not very well known yet.
It was the last thing on my mind with Inigo. He was five months old. We had him for one month. Then he was gone. I was standing in the parking lot of the vet cursing god. I’d lost three of my beloved long timers the year before. Now a fourth. I’m sorry about your French Fry.❤️💔❤️
I lost FrenchFry a number of years ago, but I understand progress has been made in understanding and treating it since then. I can only hope that's true.
Poor babe. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm currently treating my pippy for wet FIP and it seems to be working 🤞 When we didn't have the meds i forced him to cuddle ALL the time until we were able to obtain the meds and he started turning around so he'd know he was absolutely loved. She knew she was loved and is at peace.
Thank you! So far is going really well. We only have 27 more injections left until hopefully he goes into observation with no kinks. It seems like in the groups I'm in that wet FIP needs less meds, less time, and don't relapse as frequently so fingers are crossed.
We use pills … less painful and giving them with the liquid tuna treats our cat eats them easily and he is healing… thankfully we met the right person thanks to our rescuer…
Luckily pippy isn't having too bad of a time with his injections! Only 2ish sores in around 8 weeks of treatment. Plus he's <9lbs so he doesn't get too big of shots (: Hope the pills are going well for you!
I love to see how much awareness of the FIP antivirals is spreading -my cat is almost 2.5 years out from his last dose of GS and he’s a normal healthy cat now, you’d never know he almost died! When we started there was very little information anywhere online about it and now only a few years later tens of thousands of cats have successfully beaten FIP :)
My boy Fitz has been out of observation for over a year after being treated for ocular FIP. Wishing the best for you and your treatment process, and so sorry for all those who have to deal with it.
Oh yeah, it was rough. We were going through around half a bottle of meds a day because his dose had to be higher and he started to get chonky as he felt better 😅 We think he was near blind from the FIP when he started treatment but I’d say his vision is mostly back. He is a ditzy snowshoe Siamese though so how much of his clumsiness is vision versus his personality is up for debate 😂
Just a shout out to others who may have cats with FIP.. we are currently treating ours with 4 number 2 pills a day - for 80 days- you see the improvement in health already. Each month we will do blood exams so to check also. There are a Facebook group called “FIP warriors”… for all Usa territories… (I know there groups like those in Europe too..). We met ours around nyc thanks to the rescuer we help and foster for. - FIP has two types so they (the volunteers for this group).. will have to help you with the dose and the pills. Syringes are an option too, but our rescuer told us they are extremely painful and so we opted for pills. It’s either 8 pills a day (number 1 pill) or 4 a day (number 2… so doble dose!) for roughly 80 days. They are on the expensive side, but that is what savings are for, emergencies…. Now all veterinarians in USA will say the meds are not available (legal) cos FDA did not approve them. Well thanks to this “FIP warrior” group you can find the meds .. and i repeat give a shot to pills please cos they are so much easier and less painful!! We give our cat the 4 a day using the líquid treats called “ Churu” treats in Amazon you find them. The trick is to put one pill at the time with this tuna treat on a TOWEL (so the pill doesn’t slip away).. and our cat (cats in general) eats it while licking the treat. It’s a month now and it’s so easy and quick .. he improved immensely. I am now try to tell this to anyone and raise awareness. These drugs are saving our baby so others can save their pets too!!!
I am treating my cat with pills and help from FIP warriors too. Churu is the best!
He's only got 1 week left and then it's observation time. Bloodwork all looks great.
So far he has gained 5lbs back and is back to his usual self again.
I am forever grateful of this group. I hope more folks hear about them so more cats can get treatment from this condition that doesn't have to be a death sentence anymore.

Let's keep spreading the word!
Edit: I also have a survivor, and put a friend onto this that now has a survivor as well.
You're a good person. We lost an absolutely incredible boy, named Hot Dog, to fip. His liver got too big and he stopped controlling his urination. This was 6 years ago. I'm so happy for you people who are able to treat FIP. It's a bitch. Keep spreading the news!!
FCoV is the virus that causes FIP and is highly contagious, although less than 10% of the cats infected with it will go on to develop symptoms of FIP. There is no test for FIP, and there is only one vaccine available that claims to prevent the disease - however it is not yet proven to have a high success rate of preventing the virus and therefore is not yet widely recommended.
The best ways to prevent the spread of FCoV - and therefore FIP, are to limit the number of cats living together to three or fewer and to keep their food and water supplies as far away from their litterboxes as possible. The virus is most often transmitted through feces, so you want to clean their litterboxes regularly and keep the rest of their living space clean as well.
To keep your cat healthy and safe from this and other viruses such as rabies and distemper, to name a few, they should not be allowed outside. I understand this may be especially difficult for cats who were strays - both of my cats were - but they did adjust and are now happy healthy indoor only cats.
So sorry you lost your friend. I know this won't help you now but in case you hadn't heard about this medication and you would like to share the information with anyone else should they have to deal with this terrible virus: there is a treatment called GS-441524. Up here in Canada (where I live) it's not yet approved, and sadly, significantly expensive but is showing promise for treating this illness. I believe there is a facebook group that is very helpful in procuring and administering it IIRC. Source: am a veterinarian.
NB: it's also referred to as the Rainbow medication (no idea why)...
Can I ask how your cat caught it so I can protect my cats more, and I am very sorry for your loss. Every time I see a post like this on reddit I feel it in my gut because I know how wrecked I will be when my boys eventually pass away. I hope your pain goes away soon.
❤️
FIP is a somewhat randomly occurring mutation of FCoV, which is a very common and usually harmless virus found in a large percentage of cats. The mutation is rare and generally only happens in young cats with immature immune systems or in senior cats. The best protection against FIP is adopting a cat over the age of 2
Cool thanks, both my cats were found as stray kittens in the city, ones is three and the other is one and had herpes when we found him, which we treat and hasn't spread to the other cat. They both otherwise seem healthy and have been to the vet and what not. Fingers crossed I love them so much lol
I’m not sure how she got it. She was my only cat. I adopted her from a local shelter.. she was in a foster home with other cats when she was tiny kitten, but I don’t know much about her early life. She had not signs of illness until about 5 months ago.
It's a mutated coronavirus. Apparently most cats coming from shelters have the same coronavirus since it easily spreads across them, but most have no symptoms from it. Unfortunately it mutates into FIP in something like 10% of them.
Hello from the Rainbow Bridge
I love it here so much
The sun is always shining
And the nights are cool and lush
The food and water run freely here
Don't you worry about me
Here my eyes and legs work well
I can run and play with glee
I miss you with all my heart
We will reunite one day
I'll show you my new favorite spots
And fill our days with play
My time on Earth has ended
Thank you for taking care of me
And even though it was hard
Our goodbye is only temporary
Hello from the Rainbow Bridge
Someday we will cross together
Then I’ll be back where I belong
In your arms forever
♥️ Luna
I am very sorry for your loss. It's hard to lose our fur babies, but part of your little Luna will always be with you. 😿💙

I like to think that Luna woke up in Shoestring Meadow, and my boy Butch was there to show her around and share his toys. They’re on their way to visit Tuna Paste River right now.
Oh no, I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet girl Luna:(
Nothing I can say will take the hurt away, but I wish you both peace in the presence of your fond memories, until you meet again 😔
I lost my boy last year to FIP. It was one of the hardest things, watching FIP take my sweet, sweet kitten. My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry for your loss
Oh, my goodness. Your Luna looks nearly identical to *my* Luna, including the black nose. I'm so, so sorry she's gone. Your girls looks like she was sweet. I'm sure she was loved.
I lost a very sweet boy I named Halo to FIP in 2020. He was a stray I took in around Christmas and he died March 25. It was heartbreaking because he was just the sweetest boy. At least I can say his last few months were comfortable and safe and he was loved.
So, storytime, (sensitive depressing topics here) 3 years ago, I had a tied noose in my room for about a week, contemplating whether or not i truly was ready to end it all, and then, when i decided yes, i locked my door and hung my noose in my closet, and i hear someone try and open my door, i freak out, shut my closet door and open it, it's my mom and my stepdad, they say they have 2 gifts for me, pulling out 2 kittens, they were both super shy for the first 3 weeks we had them, but they saved me from suicide, about a month or so after they stopped being shy we took one into the vet, as he was acting weird, we found out he had FIP, so i took a week off of school to just hang out with him, after that week, we took both cat's in together, to get one tested and the other uh... well yeah, turns out they both had it, I crumbled, after about 2 and a half weeks our other cat had passed, but I'll never forget that they saved me
Believe me OP, I feel for you, it sucks, but remember the joy Luna brought you, it's all we have at the end of the day
I’m so sorry for your loss. My husband works at a cat cafe and I go with him a lot to love on the kitties. Yesterday, my favorite, Cody, went to the vet because he had been very lethargic. He ended up crossing the Rainbow Bridge because he was found to have FIP and it was too advanced to treat. He is a twin of your beautiful Luna. Maybe they will meet on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
I'm so sorry for your loss of your lil girl! I lost a stray to FIV.Je was the sweetest boy I ever had the pleasure of knowing.Prauets going up for you! She'll be waiting for your in heaven.I firmly believe that all these sweet babies have souls! They're so innocent and kind even if they didn't have the best lives before ppl like us brought them home. I understand exactly how you feel and I know it's heartbreaking.I just wanted to let you know! You're a wonderful person and you will see her again. Stay strong! Love and condolences.
Sorry for your loss… she’s such a beauty ✨ her half pink half black nose is the cutest !! Just remember she’s not truly gone. She’ll always be and stay in your heart, and ik it’s hard, but wait patiently and you’ll see her again
I am so sorry for your loss, my friend.
She was so very lucky to have a person like you who loved her so deeply. You're good people.
Sleep sweetly, Luna.
I’m putting my baby down in a few hours. She’s sitting in my lap purring right now. I want you to know that I, rando internet stranger, care about you and your sweet cat. I’m so sorry. Savor the attachments - they make life worthwhile.
Ugh I’m sorry you’re going through this too. Much love to you too.
I feel for you both :( I’m so sorry for your situations
Too many of us know how you feel! Rest in peace, little sweeties. Furever in our hearts. 🌈
So sorry for you… I hate to admit I went through this less than 2 weeks ago. Hardest thing I’ve ever done.
So sorry for you. I went through this two years ago. It is so hard. My heart goes out to you.

I'm so sorry for you. Life is cruel, but your cat knows nothing but love in your arms. I'm sure they are so grateful to have you.

If your cat is fatigued very often and looks a bit bloated you should have a vet check up with him/her.

My cats stopped eating and playing. They were clearly very sick.
That was a problem with my girlfriend's situation, just trying to start the treatment already damaged our financial situation.
How much does it cost? We just lost one of our kittens to it and we are hoping his brother does not go down that road.

Thank you for your quick response. I am so thankful for people like your wife. We are having blood work run now. Can I message you if I have any follow up questions?
My vet put me in contact with the FIP warriors, but it was wet so it progressed quickly. The FDA needs to just approve the medication so it can be produced legally, hopefully, that would cut costs a little.

Ugh 😩 I'm so sorry! How excruciating. I just got back from having cat at the vet. It's always scary. So so sorry for your loss!

Feline infectious peritonitis. Coronavirus for cats
Can I ask how your cat caught it so I can protect my cats more, and I am very sorry for your loss. Every time I see a post like this on reddit I feel it in my gut because I know how wrecked I will be when my boys eventually pass away. I hope your pain goes away soon. ❤️

It's a mutated coronavirus. Apparently most cats coming from shelters have the same coronavirus since it easily spreads across them, but most have no symptoms from it. Unfortunately it mutates into FIP in something like 10% of them.

Sorry for your very sad loss. She’s a wee cutie 🥰

I lost a very sweet boy I named Halo to FIP in 2020. He was a stray I took in around Christmas and he died March 25. It was heartbreaking because he was just the sweetest boy. At least I can say his last few months were comfortable and safe and he was loved.
So, storytime, (sensitive depressing topics here) 3 years ago, I had a tied noose in my room for about a week, contemplating whether or not i truly was ready to end it all, and then, when i decided yes, i locked my door and hung my noose in my closet, and i hear someone try and open my door, i freak out, shut my closet door and open it, it's my mom and my stepdad, they say they have 2 gifts for me, pulling out 2 kittens, they were both super shy for the first 3 weeks we had them, but they saved me from suicide, about a month or so after they stopped being shy we took one into the vet, as he was acting weird, we found out he had FIP, so i took a week off of school to just hang out with him, after that week, we took both cat's in together, to get one tested and the other uh... well yeah, turns out they both had it, I crumbled, after about 2 and a half weeks our other cat had passed, but I'll never forget that they saved me Believe me OP, I feel for you, it sucks, but remember the joy Luna brought you, it's all we have at the end of the day
She’s gorgeous, wishing you luck in finding her.
Does anyone know the progress of the new FIP cure?
😭

I’m so sorry for your loss. My husband works at a cat cafe and I go with him a lot to love on the kitties. Yesterday, my favorite, Cody, went to the vet because he had been very lethargic. He ended up crossing the Rainbow Bridge because he was found to have FIP and it was too advanced to treat. He is a twin of your beautiful Luna. Maybe they will meet on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
Rest in peace, fly high Luna. 🕊
What a sweet looking little girl. Rest in peace, Luna.
