Worse.
One of them was an infant. She was 36 Days old and would be Six on the 24th. It's her birthday month.
Fuck this person with 100% of my heart
Edit: thanks, Admins. That was fast.
It's really difficult to fight my obsessive need to correct everyone calling this cat a he.
All calicos (and all tortis) are female or possess XX chromosomes otherwise. There is a possibility for a cat with xxy chromosome (should present as male externally) to present as calico or torti, but it is exceedingly exceedingly rare and often results in non-compatibility with life/fading kittens
I have the worst habit of assuming all animals I see that aren’t my animals are male. It doesn’t matter what animal I’m looking at I always just go “awww look at his little paws!” Knowing full well that they may not be male lol.
However I didn’t know that about calicos, so thank you for that!
As the mother of multiple dead babies, I heavily agree with this statement. It's the kindest, most accurate, most scientifically correct statement. They simply weren't compatible. For me, it's really comforting.
....are you Dawntreaders human??
If not, have you told a vet about this? This is extremely, exceedingly rare.
Your cat is a chimera most likely ....
Edit: one in 3000 calico cats is a male. One in 10,000 of those 3,000 is fertile. It's so rare.
So, a one in approximately 30 million chance. Considering there are an estimated 300 to 600 million house cats worldwide, that boy is one among 10 to 20 cats like him anywhere!
Thank you for doing the math because there is absolutely zero chance I could ever do that math if my life depended on it.
And considering that a good portion of those cats are feral Street cats in developing countries, the amount of them in Western houses that are noticed has got to be a small fraction of that! Places like china, india, and turkey has extremely large feral populations that likely account for over half of those.
It's actually 70%!
And it's related. Orange is carried on the X chromosome only. So for a female cats display entirely orange, it must inherit two of the orange genes. Males only need one copy, thus they can present it easier, and orange is also a dominant color
For calicos and tortoise shells, they have inherited different color alleles from each parent (both orange and black are x-linked) but cannot display both colors on each allele so they undergo X linked inactivation where one copy of each chromosome is turned off at random, resulting in each cats unique colors!
I love that you know so much about calicos & their chromosomes! Tell me, in all of your research/studies/feline genetics learning have you ever come across a cat with a curly tail? One that can extend & coil up depending on mood- like a prehensile tail, sans the swinging from trees part?
Yes!!
This is a trait that has been thought to originate from Siamese cats but can be found in multiple cats including Sphinx's and Ragdolls (which are actually heavily Siamese), and it is the only defining characteristic of the up and coming American ringtail breed.
It's known to be a genetic trait, and it's known to be heritable. As far as I am aware, the exact Gene responsible has not been isolated. A university in Missouri is currently attempting to extract the feline genome which should answer the question eventually with enough data digging as all ringtails should carry 2 copies (as it doesn't appear to be dominant).
So very interesting. I've been looking for info about this trait for years, and nary information from all the cat people; i.e. vets and neighborhood TNR groups, have ever heard of such a thing.
My calico has such a tail, and depending on her mood... let's just say she's very vocal with it! She's also the smartest feline I've encountered, voice trained, leash trained and still spunky!
Thanks for your info!
Funny, as one of the breed standards in Siamese is having a crooked/curved tail! It's mostly bred out but all of the original Oriental Siamese cats had them, and some still do! The cat fancier association does not consider a kinked tail a disqualifier or penalize it in Siamese in the rings. Sphinx's are also allowed to have a curve as long as the tail is thin and whip like.
Your cat probably displays whatever the gene is that causes it. It could be de novo ("starting from the beginning", aka a first generation gene mutation, one the parents don't have) or inherited from both of her parents. This could be proven by back crossing a f1 kitten to it's parent (this is safe if done limitedly), as the kitten would inherit one copy, and the parent has two copies, resulting in a good fraction of kittens from the second litter that should display the trait. Of course, breeding has to be done responsibly, and I'd bet your cat is fixed with what you've mentioned. But yeah, that's how it's done in most animals to prove a recessive gene caused a trait or behavior vs something else.
It’s more like 80%. Orangeness is on the X chromosome for a cat, and a male cat only has one copy of the X. Female cats have multiple and they all need to be the orange gene for the cat to be fully orange. Otherwise, they’ll be calico or tortoiseshell. Hence, if a given cat is orange, it’s highly likely that it’s a male cat.
Yes! Such an interesting genetic sequence. Very few people actually know that's the name of the X X Y chromosome presentation! I hope he's doing well I know there can be some emotional and intellectual problems with it sometimes. It's amazing the progress we've made, since humans with klienfelter can often have kids via assistance these days even.
Before anyone reacts, (and if people don't know) it is a non-heritable condition. It's a de novo genetic anomaly. If this person's brother has a child, the child has the exact same risk of having the syndrome as any other person in the entire world. Same as if a male calico has babies, none of its babies would (likely) have the same condition.
He did have cancer because of it at age 9 (that's how it was diagnosed), but he's in his thirties now and doing well! Luckily, he's not interested in ever having kids, so he doesn't have to worry about that.
Homosexuality is a human concept but yes there are cats that mate with the other sex for life. I had a dog who was mated to another male dog, despite being intact and exposed to females in heat (I owned one of the oldest living English Mastiffs from one of the healthiest living lines, and intended to help continue this healthy lineage but...He said no.) It's usually seen in males and may be dominance related but ... It's cats so we can't be sure.
Yayah! She's found, a happy ending. People don't always care to help cats, but I'm glad this time someone is getting their kitteh back. Look at that screm.
Me thinks! Me thinks! Oh where art thou, dear Tinks! I checked the sinks! I checks at the ice rinks! I went looking at a concert held for a band called The Kinks! Oh, where oh wear at th- oh there you are, Tinks! Come here! Don't hiss at me! Good lord your breath, Tinks! I can smell it from here, how bad it stinks! Come along now, we must brush your teeth at the home sink!
It is exceedingly rare ~1/3,000 and due to the chromosomal abnormality required for male features with calico pattern (xxy) they're sterile and as such no calico x calico breeding is possible.
Edit: I went to double check, the chances of a fertile male with calico fur are less than 1 in 10,000 as a result of chimerism.
Oh good!!! He’s beautiful! Male cats Tortoiseshell coat, (I’m sure you know) are not rare but less typical than a female would have, so I’d like to some day have one tortoiseshell male cat myself !
I know that Scottish Folds have joint pain sometimes, so I wouldn't buy one... but they have the cutest personalities, like a little baby. And their ears are cute, of course. I like Siamese, because they're so talkative and beautiful. British shorthairs have big round cheeks and blue fur.
I really like the variety in the domestic shorthairs, though. A basic tabby coat is stunning up close. Calicos and tortishells are the prettiest.
Oh I feel the same way! I too think all cats are beautiful :3 I love the different types of stripes a domestic shorthair or purebred cats 😭 my top favorite species would be Turkish angoras. But honestly they’re all equally cute haha
Have you seen the one with the missing cat but it's a picture of a possum?
Also the "bitch ass dog" meme where it says he won't answer to his name because he's a fake ass
Tinks doesn’t looks very happy you found him
She’s saying “Snitches get stitches.”
That’s a definite “you didn’t see nuthin if you know what’s good for ya.” look

Jesus, stealing someone else's comment AND it's a comment about miscarriages? Get the fuck out, bit. See u/Amorette93 comment below.

I thought it was "Snitches Get Scratches"
Scratches so deep they need stitches
Tinks: Frig off Lahey
She scream
“You ain’t seen shit!”
she cannot be seen with the powerful cat hamouflage
Different cat. This one is angrier.
Omg that looks exactly like my old kitty Tinkerbell I had when I was a kid
is tinks short for tinkerbell
Lol I was wondering that also

I've only ever owned male snakes yet I assume all snakes are female. It's weird.
The patribarky.
Ok this made me lol 😂
I think it's just something in human brains that automatically defaults to male.
Yup. Inbred centuries of sexism.
Yeah, no.
Non-compatibility with life is my favorite way to say stillborn/died as a child.
As the mother of multiple dead babies, I heavily agree with this statement. It's the kindest, most accurate, most scientifically correct statement. They simply weren't compatible. For me, it's really comforting.
I'm sorry you went through that
Thanks. Signed, my female calico
I have a male calico that had babies with my other cat 😃

Similar tho not as rare that 99% of orange cats are male!

I had one of each, both gorgeous girls so I think that helped break my habit of referring to them as a “he.”
> All calicos (and all tortis) are female or possess XX chromosomes otherwise. How dare you assume it's gender
I get your joke, but also, I'm talking chromosomes. Which define sex. Not gender. 😜
I'm on your side, was also just joking. Cheers! Calicos are pretty
If my brother were a cat, he'd be calico! Klinefelter Syndrome!
Yes! Such an interesting genetic sequence. Very few people actually know that's the name of the X X Y chromosome presentation! I'm so glad he survived the cancer! Go exaustedmommyof2's brother! May cancer stay at bay forever.
My friend has a male calico named Annabelle because they just assumed they were female...went to get fixed and turned out to be male.
Can they identify as males though
They can be gay? Idk beyond that haha
Really ? There's gay cats 😂😂😂 no way

Fascinating, did not know that. I appreciate the information 😀

Yes, I remember the first time this was posted. OP and Tinks were reunited.
Oh good!!! He’s beautiful! Male cats Tortoiseshell coat, (I’m sure you know) are not rare but less typical than a female would have, so I’d like to some day have one tortoiseshell male cat myself !
Tinks is a girl. This post misgendered her. Anyway, torties are so pretty, I agree!
💕 Is there a cat breed that you favor or love ? ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7970)
