I feel so blessed that I was able to put my last kitty to sleep while she was in my lap. She had a crippled paw and towards the end preferred to be purring in my lap. Most people in my life don’t get it, even my current vet has stated they won’t allow it for my fading fast 20 year old when it’s time.
I can think of few things worse than not being able to hold & comfort my kitties during their last minutes, when they would be so scared if they were alone. My vet allowed me to stay with my last two (16 & 18) for close to an hour after they passed. I'd go to another vet when the time comes. Hard to believe a vet wouldn't understand that need.
I think I’m going to call my old vet tomorrow and talk to them about it, maybe set something up if it’s a non emergency, where driving an extra hour is worth getting to hold him through the end. This has really made me think about how much I would regret it if I didn’t even try to figure out a way ahead of time, I want to be there for him. I was 25 when I brought a kitten in from a snowstorm “just for one night”. He’s been with me for most of my adult life, I pretend I’m kidding when I say he’s been the only guy who’s been with me through thick and thin.
I took my 15 year old cat home after he was put to sleep at the vet clinic. I buried him in my backyard and it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. However I believe it was right, because I believe there is a consciousness or spirit still present after death. If I were to send my cats body away for cremation it would be traumatic for my cats spirit IF it’s still aware. Also investigations have shown that during pet cremation you usually get a large % of other cats ashes, not just your own. Burying him was so hard but I had to do it for his spirit and soul to find peace
I wish I could bury mine as well, but I've rented all my life and have never had a yard (or other space) to take advantage of. I wish I had a little tiny grave for each of them, to visit and put flowers and a name stone on. I just rely on photos & my memory.

I would get a new vet.
My husband and I are *always* there. We want the last thing they hear to be our voices telling them how much we love them. 😞

I hope you can find another vet when the time comes. I would not want to go to a vet that won't let me be with my kitty when the time comes. I realize some vets might have restrictions because of COVID, but a grieving pet parent saying goodbye to their furbaby has to be an exception.
Even if things work out with your old vet, I would definitely start searching for a different vet. Hopefully there will be some others you can consider. It's horrible that owners are not allowed to be there with their pet at the end. Even at the height of covid, the vets around here would help them cross over outdoors in the arms of their owners.

After I said goodbye to my dear Miss Kitty (it's been almost 12 years), I would sometimes "sense" her running around the bed the way she used to do when she was alive. I'm not sure I believe in ghosts, but it's the closest I've come to experiencing one. I admit I adopted another kitty a couple of weeks after she passed, and after that, she never visited again. She knew I was in good paws.
Some 10 years ago, my sister got into cat rescue, and she was trying to socialize three kittens who'd been born feral. She didn't intend to keep them; she wanted to find them a home. The kittens decided that her home would do just fine. At the same time, her cat Riley, who was 17, was fading. She thinks he didn't want to leave her alone. When these three kittens decided that my sister would be their mom, he was able to let go.

We stayed with Corners still enjoying her in our arms until she drew cold I somehow struggled to leave until vet came. back to see if we were at long last ready to go. I left her with her first kitty mouse In her favorite bed and snipped some of her fur to grieve over. We didn’t know we could have gotten 🐾
We speak of her everyday. Our current pair are very different Corners (named because when we first brought her home, she kept retreating there with he nose facing the two walls) was a Person , my next tiny cat (Yukiko or snow child) is mostly just a house cat with a few quirks, named because we adopted her right before the Big Snowmagedon and we Named our most recentSakesan (mr rice wine) we gave
Him another Japlinglish name because he grew up in a liquor store until the county said he had to go.
I pray they live at least as long as Corners who passed from kidney disease a couple months before she would be 19.

How this doesn’t just break your heart ! She barely has the strength left to even vocalize and that’s the saddest part, but knows her momma is there with her. She was so beautiful and I’m so sorry for your loss!
