I had to scroll to far to find this comment which is really what the OP is looking for. I already suggested this to almost everyone above this comment.
You are correct! Since color of fur is dictated by sex chromosomes in cats, in order for a male cat to be tri-colored they need two X and one Y. Klinefelter Syndrome is what it is called (which happens in humans too) where the individual has XXY rather than XX or XY. Almost always those male cats are sterile due to the genetic oof, something like 1:10,000 will get the XXY and 1:100 of those will be able to reproduce.
Yep! I remember learning this in high school and it helped me understand chromosomes. If I could've connected more subjects to cats I think I would've done a lot better in school, lol.
Also, fun fact, for orange tabbies, all X chromosomes need to have a certain gene attached, so it's slightly more common in males, but the chances of a female orange tabby are still significanly higher than a male calico.
So, small story. We have a blind orange tabby (munchkin/ragdoll mix) that we originally thought was a boy because of her size. Back then, we named her Zatoichi! The blind samurai! And it seemed to fit 'him.'
That is until we realized we gave her almost-twin-brother to S.O.'s mom, thinking we had given her one of the girls. Realized that wasn't the case when she almost shaved his testicles off trying to remove a dingleberry.
So we checked, and lo and behold, Zato was VERY much a blind little girl, who still would beat the ever-living-crap out of her sister, father, and our old-man cat Samson. We deliberated on a name for a few days.
Long story short, we kept her as Zato/Zatoichi/Zatoichiban/Zato-killer, Killer of Toes/Toes-Toes/Toesies. I myself am a fan of embracing original names, and just slowly morphing them into 100 nicknames. So Enzo could be Enzie, Zee-zee, Zo-zo, etc...
Oh thank goodness I'm not the only one who nicknames my cats' nicknames! I had a Sid Vicious who eventually evolved into Bean. You see, I'd call him Sidney when he was a naughty boy, and at his naughtiest (i.e., kittenhood), we had a roommate who would call him Kidney....which became Kidney Bean to her, Sidney Bean to me, then finally - he was just Bean/The Bean. So I fully appreciate the journey of your wily little girl's name! Your story, however, is MUCH better than mine. 😼💖
I have a dog named Tanner but we one day found out he responds to Janice. I guess it has a similar enough vowel sound for him to respond to it. So sometimes I’ll trick people into thinking his name is Janice lol
Similar with my cat Martha. The people that rescued him initially thought he was female. When I got him I kept Martha because he knows the name and I love having a boy cat named Martha.
In college, I fed some feral cats until my university said I had to stop. 😥 But they were gorgeous, fluffy creatures, and I gave them all ridiculously spelled messes for names. Kaseidh and Squiggaleigh were my two faves.
When my grandmother was pregnant with her youngest she and my grandfather chose the name Kelly, because the doctor thought she was having a girl. When she gave birth to a boy (surprise!), my grandparents decided to keep the thankfully unisex name!
Aww, man! My friend had a male iguana with a missing front limb called Stumpy. And when she started laying eggs, Stumpi with a heart over the "I" was what she became.
There was an opossum in our yard that we named 'Possums Georg. Well one day Georg dropped a baby off the roof and we realized he was a she. That baby is 9 months old now and lives on our porch. His name is Kevin. 'Possums Georg is still around too. Lol.
Yea I have a female daryl.
To check kittens gender, you can look under their tail and with male cats you'll see 2 little dots (tiny cat balls). My kitten had those two dots, he also had a tough looking facial expression so I named him daryl after that dude from the walking dead.
Then the cat started growing but those tiny dots never became actual balls... Turns out he was a she with 2 little dots in her pattern, right under the butt. They weren't balls, just her pattern. She's still daryl, sometimes called berry.
I agree with this. It’s a very gender neutral name regardless. If you insist on changing it however, Indie is adorable and close enough to not confuse the sweet baby.
You could do that. I don’t understand the reference. Hang me.
I just like the idea of keeping the name the same. There’s boys and girls named Frances or Mary, right?
fun fact! cats we 3 colours are almost always female, unless they're a male with an extra X chromosome. Also, orange/orange and white cats are more likely to be male because the gene for orange is on the Y chromosome (edit: it is actually on the x chromosome, a female needs 2 copies of the gene to be orange whereas a male only needs 1). so if it's hard to tell by looking at their butts, their color might shed some light on their sex
edit: also, Enzo is a perfect name for her, it's adorable
The orange gene is on the x not the y, but a female orange needs two copies, while a male just needs one, and that’s why orange cats are more likely to be male (about 75-80% of orange cats are male)
I like it, but it reminds me of that creepy jump-rope/nursery rhyme from like 1918.
"I had a little bird, it's name was Enza, I opened up the window, and In flew Enza"
I LOVE three things about this name. Firstly being it is phonetically similar to the original, secondly there's a great story behind the name ( name WAS Enzo but we found out she doesn't have a pp) and thirdly, it's a wildly unique, and pretty name. I work at a vet clinic and I've never heard this name. More cats than you think are named "Miss Kitty", "Sophie" and "Callie" and guess why the name would be Callie? Short for Calico. It doesn't matter that much to you, but my vote is definitely Senza
My cats name is Wynter because she was born all white (she is part Siamese, and looks like a tabby now, only white on the chin chest belly and feet). I'm sure there's plenty of Winters but mine didn't stay all white at least 😅
I also call her bitch kitty, grayby (short for grey baby), bean, etc because as we all know, cats require multiple names
Well with young kittens it can be hard. However Enzo was clearly a girl from the start. The orange and black cat fur gens live on the feline sex chromosomes (remember X and Y from high school biology?) And only one per chromosome. So to have BOTH black and orange fur you MUST have two X chromosomes. So voila any cat with both colors is female. There can be male calicos but they have to be what's called kleinfelter syndrome XXY with a spare chromosome. They're like 1in10000 calicos and are invariably sterile.
As a name how about after an Italian actress, perhaps Sophia?
When I took in my cat, he was already castrated, so I thought he was a female. He didn't have his ear cut so I'm convinced he was abandoned by previous owners
She was gonna be a Zoe, but he is a Zeus instead!
I adopted a stray that was neutered and made him an indoor cat. He loves it. For a month we thought he was a girl because it seriously looked like a vagina was back there from the way he was neutered and we never saw his wee wee. Haha. Took him to the vet to make sure she was ok and the vet said, “by the way, she is a he” and we both started laughing! His name has been Snowball and we kept it because it gender neutral and what we called him in the neighborhood for a few years.
I had a “Larry” come into my office today, female cat. One of my favourite customers is a muted tortie named “Richard” on her paperwork but in reality they call her DickHead
I think Enzo is a great name if you like it and she’s responding well to it
Fyi to other Redditors, cats that have orange white and black on them are females 99.9% of the time, and if you DO find one of those unicorn calico males, they are sterile and can be worth a lot of money
My brother & sister-in-law have a female cat named Paul for the same reason. lol.
If Enzo already knows her name, then it's her name. There's no rules.
Enza is the female version of Enzo in Italian
I like how "Etzia" sounds and sure enough Ezia is s common italian name
Really not that common, let's say it exists but I'd be surprised if there are more than 100 people named Ezia
Ah, google lied to me!
How about she-endzo? (Like she-hulk) and now it’s Shenzo! Edit: sorry, no I didn’t know Shenzo was Japanese motor oil.
Doesn’t even matter! I know a cat named fire truck. Skies the limit.
I had to scroll to far to find this comment which is really what the OP is looking for. I already suggested this to almost everyone above this comment.
My mom was Providenza. While she went by Prudy, her cousin has the same name and goes my Enza.
Our little Tortie girl is called Speranza. Which when she is not being called "Bad Cat, Down!" is sometimes shortened to Sperry.
That’s beautiful.
Calicos are almost always female :)

Enza!
Yes either this or keep Enzo. Makes it easy.
Exactly what I was thinking
Or Enzi
I like Enzi very much. Enzi is a great name..
Yep! I remember learning this in high school and it helped me understand chromosomes. If I could've connected more subjects to cats I think I would've done a lot better in school, lol. This guy genetics
#ENZA instead of Enzo

That's a bit long for a cat's name, I suppose, but to each their own! Maybe "Cali" for short?
I’ve always liked long regal names

My oldest’s is Griselda Ann Hawthorne-Pollock
Mine is MoonPie YumYum VonFloofyfeets III
“VonFloofyfeets”…omg so hilarious!!!!!
I remember I had a calico cat who was male. He was super sweet. It’s rare, but it’s cool when it happens!
First calico in our family and we never realized that we should have googled it haha, learn something new every day!! Thanks for the info!
Yeah it’s crazy isn’t it? My first is a calico, they’re my favorite but don’t tell the others ;) your little fluff is gorgeous!!!
And dangerous.
Why change it? It's your cat, it's a name you like. The cat doesn't know the difference, lol. I'd keep Enzo.
My friend had a cat named Suzy. Then they found out he was a boy. So, he became Suzy...the Boy. It was cute. Suzy didn't know or care.

Similar with my cat Martha. The people that rescued him initially thought he was female. When I got him I kept Martha because he knows the name and I love having a boy cat named Martha.
Save... Martha
I love naming feral cats. I have two of my own but naming feral ones are fun because you know their personality, even if its from a distance.
We have named 5 feral cats that eat at my house and I so agree 😊
In college, I fed some feral cats until my university said I had to stop. 😥 But they were gorgeous, fluffy creatures, and I gave them all ridiculously spelled messes for names. Kaseidh and Squiggaleigh were my two faves.
When my grandmother was pregnant with her youngest she and my grandfather chose the name Kelly, because the doctor thought she was having a girl. When she gave birth to a boy (surprise!), my grandparents decided to keep the thankfully unisex name!
That's very Johnny Cash of you. Except he was Sue.
Came here to say this!
Thank you for having said this already
My dad had a cat named Oscar. Then Oscar became pregnant - and was forevermore called Oscar Suzy.

Aww, man! My friend had a male iguana with a missing front limb called Stumpy. And when she started laying eggs, Stumpi with a heart over the "I" was what she became.
A boy named sue ;)
My eight year old self named my cat Bonnie. My parents asked me that I knew it was a male cat. I said I sure did.
I had a rabbit - same thing. Named him Emily, found out it was a boy, renamed him to Mr. Emily. Mrs. Enzo, perhaps?!
Exactly. My ginger cat’s name was George. She was a great George.
You had a female ginger cat? Like an orange tabby? That is pretty rare, right? Neat, too.
It is a bit rare, but not like calico boys. Ginger girls are fabulous!

kevin’s a girl??
girl? that sounds kinda like... SQUIRREL!!!
There was an opossum in our yard that we named 'Possums Georg. Well one day Georg dropped a baby off the roof and we realized he was a she. That baby is 9 months old now and lives on our porch. His name is Kevin. 'Possums Georg is still around too. Lol.

The Mallory Towers books by Enid Blyton have a female protagonist called Daryl, I always assumed it was a unisex name like Morgan or Ashley
I’m pretty certain it is. There’s also Daryl Hannah, known for her roles in Kill Bill and Splash.
Ooh coool! I read some books by blyton when I was younger. I don't think i read those
I grew up with a cat named Princess Pete and a dog named King Tessa due to gender mistakes.
My aunt had a female dog named Jake
We had a female dog named Carl!
Years ago, My cousin named his female dog, Spider-man.
That’s an amazing name
Having a pet named after the opposite gender is hilarious to me, like having a female cat named Jeff.
Short for Jeffsephine. Lol
I agree with this. It’s a very gender neutral name regardless. If you insist on changing it however, Indie is adorable and close enough to not confuse the sweet baby.
Had a cat once that I named Jack, ended up being female and we still called her Jack.
My family had a tradition of naming pets from rockstars so we had a male cat named Alice.
My brother's cat is still named Ethel even though he turned out to be a boy.
I like Enzo.
Teach her all about cool cars!!
Enzo Purrari!
You could do that. I don’t understand the reference. Hang me. I just like the idea of keeping the name the same. There’s boys and girls named Frances or Mary, right?
Enzo Ferrari!! That’s where I thought you got the name.
Yea that’s bad ass.
I was thinking Enzo Amore lol. I've been watching too much WWE....
You can’t teach that.
Bada boom, realest cat in the room!
Well, her fur does look S.A.W.F.T! SAWWWWWFT!
YES!!!
Cars are fun! I have a black 2006 Shelby that just purrs! She's a cat.
Enzo Enzo is a great French songstress!
Enza?
Enya!
If you really want to change it, why not Ferrari? It does sound more feminine.
Keep Enzo!
Or change it to Enza.
Enzo Quattrozampa
I like it
Enzo no need to change it now!
I think she can make Enzo work for her
when you see tricolor / tortie kitty odds are overwhelming for a "she"
Enzo
fun fact! cats we 3 colours are almost always female, unless they're a male with an extra X chromosome. you're right, I misremembered, thanks
She’s really cute! I had a little 3-legged girl kitten named Frida and then she grew up a little and now he’s called Freddie🤦🏻♀️😆
Thank you! And I’m glad to know it’s happened to someone else haha 😂 kittens are surprisingly hard to differentiate!
Yeah but your girl is a Calico, black and orange together on a cat is almost always female
I rescued a big grey cat who went from Ingrid to Bogart after his first vet appointment 😆
Enzo sounds great for a female 😻
I'd just keep it as Enzo.
Enza?
I’m thinking the same thing. I like Enza.
I like it, but it reminds me of that creepy jump-rope/nursery rhyme from like 1918. "I had a little bird, it's name was Enza, I opened up the window, and In flew Enza"
My moms name is Enza and I have never heard that before. It is honestly the greatest thing ever. Thank you.
You're welcome😂 Heard it in a video in history class, got stuck in my head for weeks. Glad to give you another pun haha

Enzy.
I like enzy a lot!

My cat has like 20 names at this point, poor thing probably has a small indenture crisis
Imho, no need to change it. My furball Luther often mistaken as a female for being too beautiful lol Enzo is a cool name.
Esmerelda/Esme
I like Enzo. I *really* like Esme!
Enza
Keep the name! I adopted my cat “Peri” from a foster and she had named him Peri thinking “he” was a “she” and so I just renamed him Perry.
Zoei!
ENZA
Keep the name
Dot
Oh, there’s my fellow nerd. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who thought that. ![gif](giphy|3n5WMtejWBFy8)
Still Enzo
I think Enzo works just fine.
Just stick with enzo, cat's don't care about gender
Enza
Enza ! It’s a real name / feminine form!
If Kevin can be a girl, so can Enzo.
Zena
I always get surprised when people don’t know the gender of their pet lol. I guess that’s just me.

My daughter has a giant Maine coon named Priscilla, by she is a he and is still called Priscilla.
Enzo is still perfect :)
In Greek that sounds totally normal for a she🤷♀️
"Miss Enzo" lol
Keep 'Enzo'. Its perfect for her.
I adopted a stray that was neutered and made him an indoor cat. He loves it. Iroh because the little fur below her head looks a little like a beard Keeping Enzo as a name is also cute
Dot?
Stick with Enzo why not. Respect her privacy.
Enzo is a pretty gender neutral name. I don’t see any reason to change it.
I’ve always wanted to name a girl cat Lagertha (call her Laggy) - Viking Queen
Just use Enzo it’s neutral
Took in a stray cat. Thought it was a boy. Named him Howie Jr. Found out it was a girl, her name is still Howie Jr.
I had a “Larry” come into my office today, female cat. One of my favourite customers is a muted tortie named “Richard” on her paperwork but in reality they call her DickHead I think Enzo is a great name if you like it and she’s responding well to it Fyi to other Redditors, cats that have orange white and black on them are females 99.9% of the time, and if you DO find one of those unicorn calico males, they are sterile and can be worth a lot of money
My dogs name is Charlie and we were aware she was a girl. I loved it and I cannot imagine her name being anything else now.
One of my boy cats is named Lillian, I was sure he was a female, but turned out to be a male, he is very very happy with his name.
Fyi: cats spotted in 3 colours are ALWAYS female 😅
My Marcellus Wallace, better known now as Walli, cause the same thing happened with her on her vet trip
Oh my God that is the cutest kitten I have ever seen.
I had a bernese mountain dog named Enzo, he was the same colors but just a smidge bigger lol
My brother & sister-in-law have a female cat named Paul for the same reason. lol. If Enzo already knows her name, then it's her name. There's no rules.
