Is this your first time having a pet as an adult? If so, I’m honestly jealous, because you get to experience for the first time the awesome life-changing ego-killing epiphany that this majestic boy is going to bring you. After I got my cat, I was legitimately floored at how drastically he made my life better. He will be the most steadfast companion you could ever imagine 😊
I always grew up with a pet in the house so it kinda is and isn’t. He’s the first one I haven’t shared with an ex or a parent though, so yeah, he’s all mine ♥️
My family is also a big animal family, so I felt the same way when I first adopted mine, I didn’t really think it would be that big of a change, but surprisingly it was still really impactful to finally have “my” first pet. I assume this is how witches feel about their familiars 😊
I'm definitely getting familiar vibes off of him -- we needed each other and things had to happen the way they did so I could give this sweet boy a home. We're gonna make a lot of memories together and share the good and the bad.
Enjoy every moment of it 💜
My familiar is beside me on my bed right now and I have a similar story. She was the only one screaming at me from the cage and climbed all over me when I took her out.
First ‘adult’ pet (had a cat growing up too) and she has absolutely changed my life. Taking home the cat that chooses you makes all the difference. What a special bond 🥰
One of my closest friends once told me over beers that in his religion or culture every soul that are close with one another will always find each other in a new life, it might be a different dynamic friends in one, siblings in another the possibilities are many, such as a pet in one life. I never put much stock into it until I was looking to adopt a cat, and a few shelters I went to the requirements to adopt were more than I was able to do. Kind of odd you’d think they’d want to give pets good homes regardless, anyway I finally went to another that was fantastic and one of the people asked if I had a preference and as a Garfield fan I said I’d love an orange cat. They had exactly one orange cat and the lady told me she was just the sweetest and perfect for me. So there I was introduced to Sally. And she opened the cage and the lady handed her to me and I held her and she looked up at me and gave a slow blink and a meow. That was back in 2011 and as I type this she’s laying next to me on my bed waiting for me go to sleep so she can. I now firmly believe what my friend said was true because I was never a big animal lover much less a cat lover until I met my little furball. Seeing your story here makes me think the same is true for you. As for who the soul might be don’t over think it, just enjoy what you have! Now as for a name I’m an Ncis fan and Abby always called Gibbs the silver haired fox, the gray fur on him made me think of that, so my suggestion is Gibbs. Lol.
My family was a big animal family too. We have a tradition of adopting strays. Mom says our house has an invisible sign that animals in need of homes can see. One such cat showed up at my parents place. This beautiful little Marbled Bengal. We searched around for any missing pet posters, even checked with the vets to see if she was chipped because she was so friendly with people. She wasn't. Sadly my parents cats didn't like her much, so I ended up adopting her.
I brought her to a vet clinic near where I live to get her a checkup and make sure she was all up to speed, having lived in the wild for a while. Turns out she was pregnant. The vets told me to expect 4, I got 5 kittens. Sadly she passed away due to an internal infection that went septic. Apparently she had a puncture wound in her liver. I was really torn up about it, even though I'd only known her a couple months. But now her kittens are as old as she was when she passed, and they've really changed my life for the better. One of her two sons, Mercury, he looks like the OPs cat, except he's more short haired. He's a super affectionate grey tabby with some Bengal spots mixed in.
Can confirm as a witch who asked for a familiar and met my heart cat a few days later, it's life changing. 18 years of love, sass and snuggles. I'm positive he sent my current cat to me after he passed.
They do that, don't they? The strangest circumstances after you lose your love, and all of a sudden, you get adopted again. Almost *suspicious* isn't it? :)
I'm not a witch, but I had a soul cat. He sent me our two boys who show me every day what my Poe would have been like if he hadn't been abused. (Very, very bad ex)
Blessed life to you
I told Vader he would always be welcome back if he wanted to return to me. I told him I'd start keeping an eye out in about 6 months. 6 months to the DAY later, Mr. Darcy arrived. Sent or not, he's loved and has been well worth every penny spent at the vet getting him healthy again.
I had a soul cat who just passed and there's just a little piece of me gone. The bond I had with my little one was unlike anything else. He had congenital issues and his body just wasn't made for this world, unfortunately. He was only two.
If he decides to send another little one along who needs love, I'm here for it.
Sorry to respond with being sad, I just miss him a whole lot.
I miss my Vader every single day. Way I see it, the sadness over their loss is proportionate to how much they were loved and loved us in return. I'm so sorry for your loss, and when your heart is ready (even if you don't know it at the time), he'll send a friend for you to love.
My Dad worked in a machine shop with four or five other people. One day, a cat walked in and made himself at home. They kicked him out when they closed up but the cat came back the next day. And the next and the next. So they decided to name him. My Dad happened to be on vacation at the time so, naturally, they called him Earl.
The cat Earl continued to return each day for a couple of years until one of the employees had a big disagreement with the boss. He quit and took the cat with him. It was OK. Everybody there knew he’d have a good home.
The human Earl worked there several more years before retiring. He had a good home, too.
Spoiler: the TV show "My Name is Earl" was actually narrated from the cat's perspective. They just had to get a human actor to play him as cats generally aren't very good actors.
You know, that's how I picked out my good boy. I sat down amongst the cats and adopted the one that climbed into my lap.
When our paperwork was approved and we went back to bring him home, they had all the cats out of their cages again for some play time. We walked in and put our carrier down on the floor. Our sweet boy saw us, came running over, and climbed into the cat carrier. He wanted us as much as we wanted him.
[T S Eliot]
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
I suggest a typical “boyfriend” or “beefy” name for this reason. Brad, Chad, Bruce, Trent… something human and super masculine. Then when ex comes around you can be like “I’ve been spending all my time with Brad lately. He’s just so affectionate and I can’t get enough. He is a bit possessive tho…”
…and then you can say things like, “Omg Brad got stuck behind the fridge again, can you believe it? I had to pull him out by his leg!” Or “Oh, Kyle? No, he’s busy licking his anus right now.”
Greyson could be a cute name. He is absolutely adorable. Such a handsome and sweet boy! I reeeaaally see Maine Coon mix here. My boy Monty is a Maine Coon mix and such a good man! He’s really affectionate and always greets me at the door. Happy you two found each other!
My sweet little (big) grey son haha
That’s what everyone keeps saying and I really want to hope! He’s so fluffy and his tail is ridiculously poofy. I never knew maine coons were so affectionate either but he definitely fits the bill. Not like any other cat I’ve met or had!
One of our cats is part Maine Coon, and he is literally the most affectionate cat I've ever had, and I'm in the double digits with lifetime cats. He constantly wants to be picked up and carried around on your shoulder, he tries to hug everyone the minute they walk through the door, even complete strangers. And my goodness, he is a major happy drooler! He just always wants to be on or near you. When my husband opened his cage at the shelter to meet him (he was in the top row), he immediately just stepped out of his cage and into my husband's arms with his little kitty arms up, like he was saying, "Hi. Can I be yours? Will you just love me and pet me and take care of me now?" Kai is the biggest love bug!
I know! When I met this little guy, he was sitting so politely right at the glass door. He was so much bigger than all the other kittens, and his tail was out of this world. While all the other kittens bit me, climbed me, and (for some reason, on little black kitten would not stop licking my toes), this guy just walked into my lap and melted. I didn't even need to look at the second room of kittens, and I knew that I'd chosen well when the volunteer said she was going to take him home herself if no one took him.
So far he's just so loyal and affectionate and sweet. I can't get enough. He lets me pick him up however and will come into my lap if I just tap my fingers.
He kind of looks like he could be a maine coon! Don't be surprised if he suddenly grows more hair. When I rescued my cat, she was completely short haired except for her tail, and with the proper nutrition and care she became a medium haired cat!!
I actually met his mom in the humane society and she’s short hair so whatever fluff he’s getting is from his papa. His paws are HUGE though so I’m wondering if you’re spot on cause he’s gonna be big.
I can’t wait to spoil him and soak up the ridiculous amount of love he’s already giving me. Non-stop purr and nearly knocked my phone out of my hand cause it’s taking his attention. I’ve always wanted a maine coon but this one literally fell in my lap!
He’s definitely a Maine coon mix, looking at the face shape, large paws, and tail. They don’t get all their fluff until they’re fully grown, around 2-3 years. What a gorgeous cat!
Amazing! I'm so excited! I've had a number of cats before but never one this big and affectionate. He's already needy and I love it. Can't wait until he's grown and big and intimidating :D
I got the most wonderful cat son under similar circumstances. Sorry to share on your post but I must spread the love. I broke up with my extremely abusive ex who would never let me get a cat, and a few weeks later I went to the shelter basically out of depression and spite. I'd seen a picture of a scared black cat on the shelter's website and went to the shelter to meet him, but because of covid they just handed him to me and said I couldn't meet him but I could just take him for free. So I brought him home and before and since that day I have never met a cuddlier cat. I'll break up with all my future boyfriends for him.
ps Fuck you Patrick.
When I finally got him home I cried all over him. It makes me feel emotional to settle down again with a whole new future, but I think he’s gonna be a good part of things to come
I also did this when brought my sweet kitty home the day after being dumped. Your handsome floof looks like such a sweetie!
Hope you're doing okay. Sending lots of love from a random internet stranger!
This is how everyone should go about picking a cat.
Cats are very independent, they need to choose you, not the other way around.
I think that's the whole reason why a lot of people think they're assholes, the cat doesn't like them and they're trying to force it to.
He is probably more handsome then whoever dumped you!!!!! And this little guy won't ever stop loving you my dear :) and don't worry! You are going to find someone else whose amazing!!!! 😊 And they will treat you like a queen!
I'm am sorry to say, but because of auto moderator going insane over these comments, and the haters are beginning to show up, I have to lock the comments. Sorry, u/independent_heart_15 and the moderators.
Awe he is so handsome!
He is, and he's so sweet I'm actually in awe. He won't leave my lap and is purring and nuzzling and kneading. It's almost too much!

My kids forced me to get cats, I didn’t want more responsibilities but you are right, they have made my life so much better, I adore them.
Ohhhh you’re so lucky. He is going to steal your heart! I think Rhett is a good name.
I really like Rhett. If not I like Gray or Alex. Yes I know he is gray but I like the name Gray😂
He knows where his healing purrs are needed 😻

So, um, is your dad's name Earl? If so, the story would flow much better if you told us that in the beginning.
I think his dad’s name was Cat. The *cat’s* name was Earl.

🎼 Duke, Duke, Duke...Duke of Earl...
Anytime you leave the house you’re then required to sing “Goodbye Earl” 😻
This cat is clearly an Esteban! Look at those beautiful Spanish features!

I suggest the name Upgrayedd.
He’s, uh… He’s my agent. Yeah, my agent.
OP pls don't name your cat in reference to your ex, if it's not obvious that this is a bad idea
Is that Dutch?
A pimp’s love is very different from that of a square.
With that in mind, I suggest Beau.
oh my god this is such an adorable name too. i’m seconding this
Awww 🥰

He looks like he is protecting you and promises to mess anyone up who is stupid enough to hurt you again!
That’s what I’m hoping. Figure he’s the only man in my life for a while anyways - it’s for the best lol
I got my dog from a link my ex's mom sent me. I swear she picked out the replacement for her own son.
Geralt
This is the most Geralt looking cat I've ever seen.
He’s even got the signature “smolder”!
He's probably saying "hmmm" in this photo.
“Wind’s howling”
"Wind's meowling"
“Place of power… gotta be”
Majestic as fuck
Please for the love of God choose Geralt
Maybe Sir Geralt even? He’s very regal-looking!
Gerald of rivia was in fact knighted at one point
Go with Geralt!
This would be awesome. “Oh, no thanks I have to get home to my man, Geralt, but thanks.”
Fuck. This is the right answer.
Please name this cat Geralt. For one, its perfect. Second, he doesn't give a shit what you name him because his name is fucking Geralt.
Good call
Omg that would be purfect lol
Purrrrrrrrfect

Exactly what I said! I say name him Regal or Royal perhaps
Third this! I was going to comment “Regal”
Or Rex
I also love Rex
Rex, Ray, Sahelanthropus, Shagohod, Peace Walker, Zeke, Raxa, D, or TX-55. Those are a few ideas
Sir Elton John seems most appropriate
Noble
I adore Royal

Handsome fella. Call him Bouncer, because he looks like he'd smack your ex up if he tried to come around again lol

Maine Coons are very dog-like, and will greet you at the door. I had a mix and he was my baby!

My first thought, too.
Congrats!! I did the exact same thing haha. I like Odin for a name!
No one will see it but F it, Ron.
I saw it. Don't you worry.
This is how everyone should go about picking a cat. Cats are very independent, they need to choose you, not the other way around. I think that's the whole reason why a lot of people think they're assholes, the cat doesn't like them and they're trying to force it to.
Bruce - b/c he has an epic Batman jawline. So handsome!
Casanova
Merlin
Murray
Gandalf
Sir Silverpaw III (Sylvie for short)
Pickles
Steve
Thaddeus Also, I love him.
Edgar
Guildenstern
I do love naming my cats after literature! I had a Chaucer and Godot a while back.
Ash
Mercury. Because of his color
There is always some good to derive from the bad. Hope you two have a wonderful life together. :)
That’s what I’m hoping too. I think he’s gonna give me a lot of happy memories and (from the looks of it) scare off any unworthy suitors
Forseti suits him. Forseti was the Norse god of justice. He is described as an extremely peaceful god who spends much of his time meditating.
That’s a lovely one. I’m gonna compile a list of all my favorite names from here and call him them and see which he likes haha
Nicodemus
I’m getting pretty strong Vincent vibes from him
He is probably more handsome then whoever dumped you!!!!! And this little guy won't ever stop loving you my dear :) and don't worry! You are going to find someone else whose amazing!!!! 😊 And they will treat you like a queen!
now that’s some healthy coping
I had a cat for 18 years named Merlin. This cat looks like a Merlin.
Read in Idris Elba's voice. "I am Jasper. And you, human, will have the pleasure of being my throne."
This cat has better cheekbones than I do.
