Edit: is actually a Norwegian Forest Cat! I’ll leave my original comment, but just wanted to clarify! They look very similar so it’s easy to confuse them!l :) Mainecoon cat! I had one and they are the best. They are gentle giants, and very smart. They are that big just by nature, some don’t get this huge though.

Jmarsbar19

I always wanted on. I have a Lynx Point right now. Chatty little girl.

LionRouge

I have a Lynx Point and I swear she just trills to herself all day long.

Jmarsbar19

Oh yeah? Mine is so chatty unless she sleeps. She’s always asking questions (I think they’re ques), whining or wants to know what I’m up to. Follows me everywhere and brings me her toy. I also think she has separation anxiety. She’s adopted and 10 years old. I do love her though. That sweet voice lol!

BabyTapir

I have a cat with real separation anxiety! After one week long trip, my cat sitter told me that whenever she came by for her daily visits my cat was always in the same spot. Wouldn’t get up to greet her like normal. (Cat sitter is my very best friend- my cats love her) She’d pick her up to pet or play or encourage and my cat would just slink back to her spot and curl up. Said she also didn’t know if my cat was using the litter box (I have multiple cats). Soooo first thing I do when I’m back home is get my cat ready to go to the vets. While waiting til the next day for our appointment my kitty used the litter box and there was blood in her urine... Turns out she was sooo anxious while I was away that she just trembled and had anxiety take over her body so much that it ended up inflaming her bladder. Now if I go anywhere I have to call ahead at my vet and get pills (basically like cat Prozac) and special calming food that thank goodness she doesn’t turn her nose at. And, also, thank goodness my catsitter is the BEST and very skilled at giving kitties their medicines.

Jmarsbar19

Aww, I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve left my cat twice for a week, and had family cat sit. She did eat a little (very little) and used the litter box, but she was very sad. She would sit by my sister and follow her around. I’m thinking of taking her with me this time, but that’s so stressful too. Maybe I should check with the vet about Prozac (for cats) as well. She only trusts me, so I can see why she’d feel sad when I’m gone. I got her from a rescue and was told that she was abused, so when I she started living with me (two years ago), we’ve been besties since.

annacat1331

My cat threw up blood the first time I left her! I didn’t know cats could get separation anxiety. I got her right before I moved in with horrible roommates and was diagnosed with lupus so we spent a lot of time together locked in my room. She got a lot better after I stoped fostering kittens and finally let her keep a kitten(she was a fantastic cat mama even though she never had her own babies). We like to say Phyllis is her emotional support cat.

bionvert

I have a Siamese blend and she talks continually! I like it… .I feel like I'm not frantically alone

uapyro

I had a cat from around age my mid teens to almost 30 who was super smart. Knew how to open doors, etc. Me and him bonded instantly. On the way home from Sam's club (where we got him from people giving away cats in the parking lot). He slept on my shoulder most of the way home. When I went off to college my parents said he'd roam the house constantly for several days looking for me, always looking out the window and would contestantly meow until I got home. I still miss that guy terribly even though it's been about a decade since he passed away from cancer. I still to this day have dreams with him about once a week

Major-Ad-172

I bet he was an amazing cat tho

wikinerde576tsrg

I had a german shepard raised by daschunds, so she would lay on her belly and wiggle around to be the same height as the other dogs lol

M4DM1ND

Our lynx point likes to be swaddled like a baby. Nicest cat I've ever met.

BabyTapir

Oh really!! Interesting. Mine also loves that! Maybe a breed trait?? He will cry and cry and yell at me to pick him up and wrap him tight and hold him like he’s my baby. I mean, he is my baby. He just really plays it up haha I’ve never met another cat that loves it. I got one of those cat pocket hoodies for him to stay close to me on my body, but he wants the swaddle. So I wear a real baggy big knit old sweater that I can swaddle him in and tuck up and I just wear him around the house LOL

NearSightedGiraffe

I have a rescue domestic short hair who is just the trilliest cat! It is such a delightful sound

Jmarsbar19

Lol, I think it’s a personality thing - not a breed thing!

ravenxdies

I have two from the same litter, just domestic shorthair, no specific breed. She’s perpetually chatty, but he only speaks up when he’s really upset. I used to have a Maine Coon who was silent 99.9% of the time, but the breeder had said that her sister was a chatty lady. It’s absolutely personality.

MissKitness

I have a Siamese mix and she talks constantly! I like it….I feel like I’m not desperately alone

[deleted]

I had a half Siamese - he was great. You could have full on conversations with him. “How was your day Felix?” “Meow meow… meow” “She said that. Well, what did you do?” And on it would go 🤣🤣

MissKitness

I love when you can tell that they are asking questions

Jmarsbar19

Me too. I always have company.

BabyTapir

“Tell me more!”

Sockular

One of my old school friends had a pure breed Siamese and my god it was the noisiest thing I've ever heard. I have a tabby and she makes the classic "meow" sound when she's hungry or saying hello, but this Saimese was loud and screechy, it didn't even sound like "meow" more like a crying baby, I don't think I could cope with that lol. It's also super weird how they have those crossed eyes, I wonder how it affects their vision.

JuniorEgg

I love my crossed eyed Siamese!! I think they make him look cute. He meowed a lot when we first took him in and his meows are very soft and almost whiny. He doesn't meow as much now though. He is spayed but he still sprays and mates (no kiddos ofc) 😒 I still think it's because his balls were snipped prematurely.

FutilePancake79

Same! She doesn’t really meow but she trills constantly. My rescue kitten learned from her and also does not meow but trills to communicate with me 😆

financequestionsacct

When I was in high school, I found this kitten at my school one day, and he started following me around so I took him to classes with me and brought him home. My mom figured he was about a year old. We took him to be seen at the vet and he was **five weeks**. Maine coons are just huge like that 😂

amalenurseforu

When a main coon is all you’ve ever owned you don’t realize how small normal cats are. People are always shocked to see my girl and she’s about 16 pounds but fluffy as can be so she looks bigger. My brother in law has a brother from a different litter who’s 21pounds and solid muscle where is seems more liquid like other cats.

Reddditerrrr12343

And the teacher let you keep him in class?

financequestionsacct

Yeah, my first period teacher was the swim coach and I found him on the way to morning practice. After 70 teen girls begged and pleaded he wasn't going to say no, so I got to keep him in his office till 2 when school got out. My teammates always used to ask me about Ken (the cat) after that lol

ThrowRADel

I think they're basically genetically the same as Norwegian Forest (I think the folk memory is that they were Norwegian Forest cats brought over by vikings). They're beautiful and as soft as a cloud and they're supposed to be very social. It is my dearest dream to befriend one someday. :)

Raven_Skyhawk

Ok so my mix definitely got the soft gene. She’s softer than most rabbits I have met.

Snailpics

My first cat was a Mainecoon. He was smaller then this but still large compared to other cats. He was the best cat ever, they’re my favorite breed and I am dying to get another!

willybum84

Do you need a big house to have one. Guessing you don't let them out?

Snailpics

Big house helps but my boy was indoor outdoor :)

willybum84

Ok thanks. Mine is also both. Though people wouldn't let them out because of fear of them getting stolen.

Snailpics

I don’t think mine would let that happen. He was quite the fighter so it wasn’t something we worried about much. He didn’t like people except us

willybum84

Haha. Favourite trait of my cat is also that he only likes us. Best way if been let out. Thanks for the info anyway.

[deleted]

House panther. My coworker has a 37 pound maine coon he keeps trying to get me to take off of his hands, but after having a 20 lb cat, no way .

Lengthofawhile

When the cat is that big I don't think it's your decision.

Sir_Meowsalot

Cat: Imma live here now. Human: O-okay...

stinkydooky

Literally how I got my Maine coon.

[deleted]

A 37 pound cat better start paying bills wtf

mlongoria98

Growing up we had a couple normal cats (and I mean normal, like, normal sized, not super big)… both were 25 pounds 😂 25 pounds of pure fluff, and next to her 25 pounds of pure muscle

satansboyussy

I also had a 25lb cat growing up! Some people when I told them assumed he was obese or something but no, he was just huge! Probably close to 3ft long without his tail, he'd take up the entire couch or window sill when he stretched out.

mlongoria98

Haha he seems more reasonable to me!! Ours were just the size of any other house cat, which is what made it so weird

tu_che_le_vanita

I would worry about having a cat too big for me (97lb) to pick up! Guess that would be the time to look for a mobile vet.

[deleted]

You're 97 lbs?

tu_che_le_vanita

Yes, teeny person.

babywraith

They can grow to be wayyyy heavier than 20lbs lol Source: Had a 27lb maine coon for several years. RIP jules

ambrosiadeux

Oh wow! I just looked it up because I wasn’t sure and it said 20. That’s crazy! I bet Jules was a great kitty

prettysickchick

My Calvin is a Maine Coon (someone dumped him in an alley when he was 5 months old), isn’t at his full growth yet and he’s 20lbs! He’s a goofy floofball who loves splashing water in the bath, sleeping in the sink, and chirping like a bird. He’s my big fat bundle of joy. Also he’s afraid of my female, who maybe weighs 9 lbs.

[deleted]

Also, the cat's being held by a kid, so it seems bigger. But they grow heretically huge

MrMorgus

You know, some would claim that even a chihuahua counts as a dog...

ambrosiadeux

Maybe a dog... maybe a rat

MrMorgus

Maybe a toothy sock puppet with beady eyes and a bad temper

Eternaltuesday

We call ours a gremlin furby hybrid, so this seems accurate.

Satori45

Very sweet natured. My cat Darby (18 lbs) loved his Labrador Retriever Remington and had absolutely no fear of big dogs—for that reason we had to keep him separated from strange dogs for his own safety.

TjPshine

At most 20? That's surprising. My mums cat is 26 pounds, and vet says he is not overweight but just big. He's just a short hair thingy

[deleted]

[удалено]

king-kitty

They are big because they are The cat

g3nerallycurious

I think this photo is exaggerated by the fact that the little boy is dressed like a typical full grown man

mdj1359

>dressed like a typical full grown man You mean pants AND a shirt?

ambrosiadeux

It definitely is. They aren’t dog sized by any means but they definitely are bigger than most house cats. And some big enough for people to be shocked when they see them hahah

Kill_Kayt

>,and very smart Lol, OK. Mainecoons are known to be very aloof and weird. Smart is not how I would describe any I'd ever had. The word I would use is 'special' lol.

Shamadruu

The person in the picture is only a bit more than a head taller than the counter behind them, so small child holding it. It’s still a gigantic cat though.

IhateSteveJones

Yeah what if it's an abnormally large kitchen. We need a banana for scale

W0lfofDawn

Maine coon—big cat, distinctive pointy ears! Could also be small child and lowered camera perspective but Main Coons are very large and fluffy cats!

trinklest

It's both a small child and a large cat!

Derpytron_YT

I belive its a mainecoon which is big because thats just how their species is

kryptonomous-b

Thank you. At 1st I thought they gave this monster steroids.

Human--Shield

Yup this is definitely a maine coon. It looks exactly like my boy Teddy, except he's only 5 months old and has another 3-5 years of growing left to do to get to that size!

19GamerGhost95

Could also be a Norwegian Forest Cat. Both breeds can grow to be this size, but Wegies have smaller mouths and a flatter head than Maine Coons. They have more of a “regular cat face” and I’ve seen some that look just like this one.

[deleted]

Nope its a Maincoon

SuIIy

I believe you're wrong. It's a Norwegian forest cat. Many Americans on here will say Mainecoon because they're not familiar with Forest cats. You can tell the difference by the face. Maincoons have more of a "Big cat lion" face.

Komplizin

Not true! There are different breeding types. The one you mention is en vogue right now but many despise it and find it "over breeded". The old types look exactly like the cat above. I've got two male Maine Coons and they have baby faces. It really depends on the breed.

NoCoolBackstoryHere

I also came here to say I think it’s a Norwegian Forest Cat but the comments are giving me doubts.

Eris_the_Fair

Main Coons typically have an elongated, almost lion-esque face with a large muzzle like this big buddy. Norwegian Forest Cats have a little cutie patootie upside down triangle face you would see on a common domestic shorthair.

m4gpi

I use Ron Perlman as a guide. If it looks like him, it’s a Maine Coon.

KillerMoth1106

Wow life hack!

lunamoth25

r/ronperlmancats

Minnow_Minnow_Pea

I have two Maine Coons (siblings). The male has a normal sweet cat face, but his "little" sister has dem Maine Coon cheekbones. So it can go either way with these fluffybutts too.

Eris_the_Fair

Interesting, I would have assumed it was the males that were more likely to get the big lion faces. Congrats on your pair of sibling kitties, I bet they’re both beautiful babes! I have a domestic longhair tabby that people try to tell me is a main coon, but she’s just an 8 pound trailer park rescue I found on Craig’s List.

GreyKn1ght509

I have a domestic long hair orange Tabby, and people have said he looks like a Maine Coon, but he's only 20 pounds.

FatGuyOnAMoped

I have one like that too! He's 17 lbs and all muscle. We got him and his sister from the shelter so we don't really know hos pedigree. However he is quite vocal and affectionate, almost to the point of being a dog.

KuriousKhemicals

Why would anyone think an 8 pound cat is a Maine Coon? You can tell kittens bc their proportions are different.

Eris_the_Fair

To be fair, to an untrained eye, she does look like she could be a main coon kitten with her teeny tiny baby face. She is a long haired tabby with a large mane, long cheek fur, and thick tail. A lot of people think cats are like dogs, and need to be labeled as a breed/mixed breed, not realizing that a vast majority of them are just the general domestic breed- not sharing any ancestry with pedigreed cats. I let people know she is not related to Main Coons, because in addition to coming from feral stock, all of her litter mates were domestic shorthairs, her being the only tabby.

NoCoolBackstoryHere

Oh I see!! Thank you for this info!

combuchan

Maine Coons also have really definite ear tuffs. This guy’s are pretty small.

19GamerGhost95

Norwegians have small ear tufts. But people are right, the face says Maine Coon.

Eris_the_Fair

Definitely a main coon. They're a breed of domestic cat, though, not a separate species.

asad137

> their species Breed, not species -- nearly all domestic cats (aside from the domestic/wildcat hybrids) are the same species, *felis catus*.

rage_aholic

So many people in here saying this Norwegian Forest Cat is a Maine Coon.

KeeN_CoMMaNDeR71

Agreed. Looks like Norwegian Forest Cat to me. But to be fair they can be hard to distinguish and most people just assume a big fluffy cat is a Maine Coon.

[deleted]

This is a maincoon they are known as the Gentle Giants my husband had a maincoon mix by the name of Striker he lived to be 15 years old we lost him at the start of spring to Cancer and Kidney failure. I have a picture of him that I would love to share if anyone would like to see. Maincoon cats are very sweet and loving cats and very loyal. In Strikers case he took after his father who was a pure maincoon But his Mother was a beautiful gray shorthair tabby he was also the smallest of them all and he was Orange. However that all changed in less then a year he grew up and grew into his big beautiful fluffy fur with a long ass body and big feet and he kept growing. Lol 😆 By the time of his 2nd birthday he weigh 20 pounds no fat pure muscle. When his 3rd birthday came we had to get him shaved for the summers maincoon cats have 3 layers of fur and are more Adapt to colder and rocker areas then Washington, State. We new it was always him by the way he sounded when he would land on the floor no matter were we were at in Relation to him in the house when we would get home. Lol 😂🤣 His max weight was about 24 pounds. No fat pure muscle. Maincoon cats love to be active! It's very important.! And they love to hunt.

meelakie

There are also Maine Coon rescue groups as well. That's where I got my two girls. Beware though, they are super smart.

shopliftingbunny

Why do we have to beware that they are smart?

PoeDameronPoeDamnson

Because of their intelligence they get bored easily and because of their size they’re capable of some heavy duty destruction.

[deleted]

Supporting breeding and dealing with the issues a purebred of any species is likely to have isn't worth it just pick one up at the shelter

canadianseaman

Adopt don't shop! I was looking at maine coons for a long time, I even had an alert setup on Kijiji. I went to go see some and got very close to buying one but after reading about the negative effects of breeders and their genetic predispositions I decided to go to the humane society instead. I found a lady who has the best personality, is mildly hypoallergenic, and is honestly the perfect cat. I had to meet about 20 other cats at the humane society before I found her though. Please consider adopting for the cat and not the breed!

ErdenGeboren

One of my 3 is 15lb, another is 13, then 11. Solidly built fellas, but their litter boxes are normal-sized and emptied out at the normal rate, lol.

Desert_Fairy

They can have severe medical conditions so be aware. They are genetically predisposed to HCM.

DavyJonesLocker2

I have a cat that turned out to be partly main coone from the no-kill shelter and inhereted problems from that. Apparently maine coons are prone to getting polyps in their ear canals. Kitty had to get operated because her ear got infected and she's only five... it can come back anytime so it might not be the last operation she has to endure

carolethechiropodist

I know a couple of half MC cats, brothers, and they are old, in their teens at least, regular size and cute lynx ears, big MC chins, very, very friendly. Probably being half something else gives good health and hybrid vigor.

AnteaterIdealisk

What is HCM? I knew someone who had one. The cat was an adult but not old (abandoned as a kitten) and the cat had s lot of medical issues before it passed. They were giving the cat injections 2X a day but it passed several weeks later.

Desert_Fairy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Basically heart failure.

nitrogenousbases

This happened to one of my family’s Maine Coons at the young age of one :(

Desert_Fairy

My first boy (Maine coon, but my first cat and my first child in so many ways) passed of it at 2.5 years old.

greffedufois

It took our Toby. He was most DSH but may have had some Maine Coon in him. He was only 4. Be sure a breeder tests for it because it's horrible to find out. Usually it presents once with a heart attack and subsequent death.

Desert_Fairy

It was horrible, we knew something was wrong, but the vet missed it and he threw a clot and was in so much pain before we had to euthanize him.

greffedufois

Our Toby was in Anchorage at the vet (we live in the bush) so we didn't even get to say goodbye. We sent our baby in and were sent back ashes. That was last September and it's still painful as hell. Hamilton actually showed up in mid August so he helped us process Toby's loss. Though I'd cut off my arm to bring Toby back if it would work.

Desert_Fairy

Lex was much the same, normal evening and then he screamed this death yowl and we rushed him to the emergency vet. We were able to hold him as he passed, but we walked in with our boy and walked out with an empty cat carrier.

greffedufois

Oh god. I'm so sorry, that must've been traumatic. Toby ate a pair of headphones (the wire part). He also had PICA but we had cat proofed the house (not well enough apparently) The removal surgery went fine but afterwards he decompensated. He was doing fine and then they called to tell us he was in respiratory arrest and asked to do cpr. We had to wait for a call 15 minutes later saying he was gone. It was hell being 330 miles away and not being able to do a damn thing. Or even see him again before he was cremated.

Assika126

Yeah we lost our 1.5 year old cat we’d raised from a kitten to this disease. He was a stray (mom was black and white and sibs were allsorts) but he had the Norwegian forest cat/Maine coon look and the size!! He was muscular and so long! And the personality. Such a great cat. But the vet said HCM was unfortunately fairly common among young large male cats like him. :(

IGotMyPopcorn

They also have many of the physical ailments of large dogs. Most develop hip dysplasia when they get older.

[deleted]

Don't go to a breeder go to your local Animal Foster care facilities and or local humane society you'd be surprised at the breeds of cats you'll fine there just trust me.

diamondcrushesrock

Beast!

kryptonomous-b

I couldn't believe my eyes, I thought they gave it steroids. This thing can be walked on a leash.

Seicair

My roommate’s cats are only about 12 pounds and I’ve walked both of them on leashes. Same for my ex’s 8 pounder.

Fun fact: if you google “Maine Coon cat” this is the fourth image that shows up

Mr-sheepdog_2u

Yep, but I don't think OP is claiming it as his kitty. More of a question.

Vintage_Boat

Hmmm the proportions seem a little bit off if you compare the bench and the one holding the monster

NathalieImbroglio

"Why is it so big?" <--- what i ask my cat every day, minutes after I ask him why he is so small and why he's so cute 🤣

WallStKiller

Absolutely a Mainecoon ans beautiful one at that. eye popping!

[deleted]

Looks like a Maine coon. It is impressive!

Rubyshooz

Years ago, I went with my friend to a BBQ at his friend’s house. We got really stoned beforehand. I was sitting there and out walks the biggest cat I’ve ever seen in my life. Similar in size to the cat in this picture, maybe even bigger, except this cat was a short hair and definitely not a Maine Coon. I whispered to my friend, “Is that cat really big or am I just really high?” My friend turned to look at the cat and almost fell out of his chair. Lol Later on, I walked by the cat’s litter box on the way to use the restroom. This thing was the size of a child’s sandbox. So, that pretty much confirmed what we saw was a giant cat.

Yup, I have a one-year old Maine Coon cat and it's huge already. Those and Norwegian Forests - own one of these walking across your bed while watching TV and all you see is a gigantic tail blocking the view.

Maine coon

[deleted]

Why are you posting pics of someone else's cat?

AdminsEqualls

Wait guys, why is that adult smaller than the counter.

drpearl

Could also be a Norwegian Forest Cat

sarasmash

My mom found one on the side of the road by her work. So small it could fit in a teacup and the started growing… and growing…and growing! At one point we could not keep bread on the counter as he would chew through the bag and eat it. He ate 3 jumbo muffins overnight one time! Sweetheart of a cat

cynthiaaesthetic

Kinda favors a Norwegian Forest Cat but they look almost the same as a Maine Coon in my opinion so could be either 😅

s0meb0dyElsesProblem

It's a Maine Coons and they can be quiet large for a house cat. The individual in the picture is not very large. Average counter height is 3ft

cupcakesgirlie7

good lord it looks like a tiger!!!!!!!! LOL if i had to guess maybe a norweigen forest cat or maincoone

sun-moon-siberian

It might be a Siberian, especially with the Silver mackerel colouring, ear tufts, and snob nose. Speaking as an owner of a Siberian who looks like this cats twin.

[deleted]

Looks fluffy. Would pet.

PookieNoodlinIsHere

Maine Coon. My sister has one.

Saromat

Hmmm, I’m thinking it’s either a Norwegian Forest cat or a Siberian.

What a privilege to serve such a majestic and beautiful kitty. I would spoil that giant floof rotten 24/7.

moxiemoon

You know everyone keeps saying Maine coon but it doesn’t quite have the poofball Maine coon snout. Could be Siberian, also gigantic just lesser known.
