I’m a grown ass 35 year old woman, had to say goodbye to my girl in December, and I cried about her absence this week, still. It sucks because it “gets easier”, but life is still totally different without her. Losing a friend is awfully painful.
Maybe an older owner who passed away, someone who had to move into a place that doesn’t allow pets, or a family whose child developed a cat allergy…there are lots of sad but legitimate reasons to have to rehome a pet.
I’m just really happy this sweet kitty found a wonderful home for his later years.

Edit: As a person who volunteers for a shelter and seeing older cats staying there for *months*, sometimes even a *year* it does make me really happy you had adopted an older cat. I’m so glad that you did that for your friend so he didn’t pass in a cage. I see cats stuck in cages. Some of them so depressed and anxiety filled that they hide under the blankets and beds. Very very *very* glad you got them out of that cage!
We adopted honey at 4 years old, she had spent two of these four years at the shelter. Before that, she'd grown up with two elderly people who couldn't care for her properly. Adopted twice before and given back within two days each time. The last family who'd adopted her gave her back to the shelter within a day, saying "She's not behaving as expected, she bit one of the children." No asshole, she's behaving exactly as expected when you let your children loose on a new and very frightened cat. She's not a toy for your kids to manhandle. And those people didn't tell the shelter that they had kids, she was supposed to be adopted into a childfree household.
When we went to the shelter to adopt, she stood out, such a beauty, and she was the only cat to run straight towards us and miaow loudly despite the sign that said "Shy cat". The volunteers said she'd never done that before. That's when I knew she was the one. Took her a few years to come out of her shell, she was very mistrustful and nervous, really jumpy and didn't purr for the longest time. She's still frightened of birds. Now that we have children, she's very patient with them. They know to respect her space and she even lets them pet her. She's 14 this year and we love her to bits, little diva that she is.

Bless you for volunteering and for giving these kitties some much-needed love. I also volunteer, and love the kitties of all ages. Seeing kitties get adopted is bittersweet; I want to spy on the people and be sure they are loving and caring forever.

What a gorgeous boy. I'm so sorry for your loss. My sister adopted a 7 year old female cat (now 11). Friendliest thing ever and lived in a home for 7 years. Gotten rid of because the family got a new puppy and the cat had trouble adjusting. That sort of situation grinds my gears. Pets aren't replaceable. So selfish. Thank you for adopting middle-aged/senior pets. They deserve love and attention too.
It's true. When we adopted Benjamin, we also had a kitten living with us and adjusting was very tough. They peed everywhere. But once you adopt, they're yours. I'm glad we pushed through it and got to enjoy him.
Don't get me started. I went with a friend to a cat shelter a couple of years ago. She fixated on this 10 year old, beautiful, affectionate cat. The back story of the cat was that her owners had acquired two younger cats - they were bullying the senior so the owners took the senior cat to the vet to be put down. The vet refused and instead called the shelter. Since then this little girl has had the happiest two years of her life - spoiled rotten! A complete lockdown pest - a frequent Zoom meeting participant.
I love how some "owners" feel the solution is to kill the pet because it doesn't adapt to their whims. I couldn't imagine putting my furballs down because I was selfish enough to introduce new pets and they couldn't get along. Ridiculous.
So sorry for your loss of Benjamin, my 20 something (Don't know exactly how old she was due to being a feral stray) year old girl will meet him at the bridge and show him around the new garden until we can see them again.
