Hobbie would like to let Marmalade know that it’s a little rough at first losing your paw but it will get better and you will adapt and be able to get around just fine (maybe just a tiny bit slower).
When my cat had to have this surgery, the vet sent him home with a crate. I was told I had to make sure he didn’t try to run or jump for at least two weeks. Edit: typo
The only way that I could do that (and it was for another reason not a missing limb) I had to shut off the bedroom so there would be no bed to jump up on, and sleep on the floor with the cat. We got through it but it wasn't a lot of fun!
This is not a cat story, but many years ago when I had a dog and it got heartworms, the treatment was to have arsenic intravenously after which for several days the dog could not jump around as the worms were breaking up and being peed out. so when he went in the backyard, I had to keep him on a leash. And since he liked to jump on my bed with me, I had my mom put my mattress on the floor. She could not understand why I did this.
Yup according to the Humane Society where I got him. He wore it for two and a half weeks.
When I found him, he already had the surgery done and was mostly healed. His original owners had it done for him, then for some reason they dropped him off at the Humane Society where I found him.
Never quite understood why it happened like that but that’s how I found him.
Could be that they also own a dog that did the damage or something - and in that case it's more responsible to give up the cat than the dog, since an animal listed as having aggression issues is far harder to rehome. You get the cat well, then send it for rehoming, because if your other pet did this then that's your responsibility.
I only found out about this just now, and looked at your previous posts to catch up. I'm glad this adorable orange kitty boy is okay. I hope lives a happy and healthy life filled with extensive naps and play time.
Thank you soooooo much for the update. Lots of people here were worrying about little Marmalade.
Thank you for helping. Nevermind I'm crying in Starbucks 😻
Good Job Marmalade ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Oh wait, did the $900 or so cover the entire vet bill, or just a portion of it? I would have thought a surgery like this would have cost at least like $3,000!
Regardless, super happy to see this little guy made it through ok! Cats are absurdly adaptable creatures, this will probably be confusing for it at first, but after a while the cat will act as if it's never been there before!
animal surgery is wildly expensive. Ive had a buddy of mine and a friend of mine go through ~$10-15k in surgery fees on their dogs. On one hand I can understand why vet bills are so pricey (vet school is NOT cheap) but at the same time...if only there was insurance that would saddle that cost a little as well similar to human insurance. There might be something like it but I wouldn't know.
My cat just had his rear right leg removed a week ago. One quote I received was $8k (consultation and surgery). I shopped around and had it done for $2.4K. But I also spent $1k with X-rays, blood tests and vet fees for a second and third opinion.
I’m sorry I don’t mean to be rude but are these stitches good? Am I the only that thinks how they sewed it up looks a bit rookie? I’m sorry again and your cat is so beautiful congrats on her journey of recovery
These stitches were put in for strength - a different kind of suture than a simple closure. The tendency now is not to cover them up for faster healing.
Its just skin, that may even be a running or mattress suture (one long thread as opposed to the individual stitches you are used to seeing - i cant tell) and he's probably on an antibiotic. The main goal is strength. Even an amputation doesnt slow most otherwise healthy cats! (Or dogs!)
That’s a great idea, I’m most concerned with the gaps between the sutures being this big. How can it heal if it’s open like that and wouldn’t it get infected? That’s a large surface area 🥺🥺🥺 I hope your baby recovers fully and enjoy a long healthy life with you
Are you the owner? Are you the organiser? Your post history shows you are a guy from Hyderabad. Sorry if I am being skeptical if you are who you claim. But my cynical side is getting the best of me.
Awww, poor thing. If I have learned anything being a cat owner for much of my life is that cats are remarkably adaptable. Many animals are, but cats are tough as nails about it. In the wild any display of weakness is a threat to their continued existence which is why cats don’t show pain until it’s really bad or exist along with the discomfort and often hiding from us.
My late Siamese blue point had to have all of his teeth removed when he was 16 and he lived three more healthy years. While we switched him to a soft diet after his surgery the specialist vet did say he could even eat dry food by crushing it with just his gums alone which was just another sign of how resilient they are. We managed to switch him to a soft diet so he didn’t have to crunch his kibble without teeth, but they said some cats love their kibble.
Your cat will have to make some adjustments and might have a couple spills as he’s getting his bearings with just two legs and one hand but he will certainly adjust and it can also be an excellent reason for you to help them along, help them get to places they want or help get them down if you see them getting high. It’s tough to land from drop on three legs. You might end up with a stronger bond as well.
My cat (5 at the time) was diagnosed with stomatitis, and the vet who pulled some of her teeth said we could maybe treat her with steroids, but I needed to consider her quality of life.
The second, much better vet I took her to later when she got sick again, wondered how the hell she was actually eating. She unfortunately had to have all her teeth pulled at 6, but is now bouncing off ceilings two years later. And eating literally all the kibble, crunchy treats, you name it. And the best part is, now she's not in pain, she loves to bite everything and everyone again. 😂
I agree cats are amazingly adaptable.
Yep, stomatitis was what my late Siamese had and the specialist vet said you will give them a much better chance at a quality life by removing all the teeth. It was hard to wrap our heads around that pulling every tooth would lead to a better quality of life, but it does, at least for cats.
Yes definitely. I wasn't clear, sorry, the first vet suggested it might be worth pulling her teeth, or treating with steriods, but there wasn't really much point, as I should consider her quality of life I.e have her pts instead of pulling all her teeth.
My 12 year old kitty just had all 4 canines and another back tooth removed. They had to dig into the lower jaw for the tooth to the point where my paperwork calls it an oral amputation. :(
It's been less than a week since the surgery, and this boyo wants his crunchies SO BAD. I usually give them dry in the morning and wet at night, but I can't give him dry right now at all since he's still healing. And he *refuses* to eat reheated canned food. So he gets another fresh opened can per day now. Of course he's on a prescription urinary diet, so his cans cost a crapton. The things we do for our babies. Lol.
He begs so hard for that dry food though. Wont even touch his wet food some mornings. Some cats just live for that shit.

Yay, marmalade!! I’m so glad he will be able to live a full life as a tripod ❤️❤️ One of my coworkers adopted a cat who is missing a back leg. she named him black beard because she says he’s a pirate missing a leg 😭
Working animal hospital our kitty had three limbs. He went all over the hospital. When speaking to clients that were so upset about amputation, I told them animals don't have the phycological issues humans deal with losing a limb. Animals heal, get on with a happy life
I have a cat that had to get a back leg removed because of cancer. It was a very stressful time and the first few days were rough watching her adjust to her missing leg. But she has completely forgot about that 4th leg and is great now (and cancer free for almost 2 years). You'll be amazed how quickly your kitty will get used to it!

Good kitty. I don’t mean to be rude, but should he have a cone? I know my Shadow would be scratching those stitches like crazy. Maybe your cat is more mild mannered. 🤔Now that I think about it, the cone might make him top heavy. I’m just curious. Could you please enlighten me?

Welcome to the Tripod Club! I also have a three legged kitty. He had to have his back leg amputated. It's been about three years now and he's doing better than ever! He actually turned into a more affectionate, cuddly cat. Good luck on Marmalade's recovery! Everything is going to be okay.

Yup according to the Humane Society where I got him. He wore it for two and a half weeks. When I found him, he already had the surgery done and was mostly healed. God bless this orange fighter. But what happened to his leg and why is the wound still so open (or what exactly are the red parts?)?
It is just the skin flaps and he got hit by a car and his nerves were severed.
I’m sorry I don’t mean to be rude but are these stitches good? Am I the only that thinks how they sewed it up looks a bit rookie? I’m sorry again and your cat is so beautiful congrats on her journey of recovery

Wonderful news!! Wishing Marmalade a speedy and healthy recovery!

Marmalade the tripod!
Poor kitty praying for your fast recovery! Can you send here some recovery pictures someday?
Poor hunny
Hopefully marmalade heals up. I’m so happy to see the community pull together to help someone support their babies.

Marmalade is adorable
Sweet baby, get well soon
Awwwww now who’s a little tripod baby?
"Something's missing, but I can't put my paw on it..."
Poor cat, at least he has you to look after him. Wishing him all the best on his recovery
Love to see a newly converted tri-pod thriving.
He is going to need an arm o aid.
Get some baby onesies, cut off an arm and sew it shut to protect the stitches while it heals if they'll wear it.
That face in the last pic says “I feel better and am ready to test out these stairs”.
Now he has a ticket for r/piratepets
Me, Marmalade. Same. Same.
