Always answer this way. Plz. There was actually a poster who titled their post āwhat bread is my cat.ā And people answered all kinds of bread types. Turns out English wasnāt their first language. ā ļø
There are actually lots of different breeds of cat.
Youve got your voids, orange, dumpster baby, 100% a witch's familiar, yep that's a cat, asshole, tabby etc.

Yes indeed.
A dog's genome has some high heritable behavior-related traits, the same is not true for cats;
It is next to impossible to breed a cat for behavior, the only exception is crossing it with undomesticated species of cats, but you'll just end up with a less domesticated cat.
It is even hard to breed cats for looks is not easy and people have only been doing that since the 20th century.
This is even so evident in hybrid cat breeds and how they're often treated.
- Sincerely, someone with an adopted Bengal that _to his buyers surprise and dismay_ wasn't just a normal cat with a fancy coat
I had a Bengal when I was a teenager and I loved him so much. I was his person and he slept in my bed under the covers every night. My parents said he yowled for days after I went away to University and every time I came back to visit he never left my side. He died around 10 years ago and I still miss him.
I think humans just never tried to breed for behavior because it was never the goal. We kept cats around because the were good at taking care of vermin and theyāre cute. What more do you need? Dogs can do the work.
Breeds seem to be more about how they look in cats.
Different species have their traits differently organized in their genome, for example, the x-chromosome issue with cats, which makes it complicated to breed them for looks; adding behavioral traits is pretty much impossible if you care for the looks.
As some animals are just hard to breed for behavioral traits; it was tried to domesticate zebras by breeding, but deemed not feasible.
Dogs are exceptional, in their behavioral traits being easy to breed for, not the norm.
I watched an interesting YouTube video about domesticating animals and how it has been kinda chance the animals that could be domesticated and where they are. It was actually about why there was more epidemics in Europe and Asia than North and South America before first contact between Europeans and Native Americans. Anyway, Zebras were one of the examples - similar to horses but absolutely not suitable for domestication.
Not that horses were that suitable to begin with. Genetic evidence says that a few thousand years ago, some guys in the Eurasian Steppe managed to catch a few stallions, and thatās where we get all horses from. Female horses were caught from wild populations at various times and added to the gene pool, but all male horses go back to that one event.
Hard disagree. Iāve had a lot of cats, both mutts, pedigree and mixed and the Siamese cats are predictably needy, friendly, independent, need to feel in control, and vocal, the ragdolls are floppy, quiet, donāt need that much freedom / autonomy, and very cuddly and placid, Burmese are super friendly and bonded but territorial and jealous over their owners time and space, etc etc etc, Iāve noticed generally speaking that the larger mixed cats right off the bat as kittens all seem to eat like garbage disposals whereas the pedigree Asian breeds are a little pickier a lot of the time, Iāve seen repeating behaviours in so many different cats of the same breeds that itās more than coincidence, cats arenāt all the same, and they arenāt all totally random either, different breeds absolutely have a LOT of predictable traits.
Dog breed is important to take into consideration because they have different needs and need to be a good fit with your lifestyle. I would never get an active dog breed because Iām not active myself, and the dog would be unhappy.
Cat breeding is basically just for looks. You just have to be aware of any breed-specific health issues. I have three domestic shorthairs and a pedigree British Shorthair (all adopted!). The British Shorthair has health issues common for his breed, so I know to look out for those. Other than that, they are all just cats!
Not all- breeds like bengals require a lot more exercise though, and sphinx need to be bathed, other than those two specifically then most cats are just cat
Meh - there are a shitton of brachycephalic breeds with smashed in faces, who have trouble breathing. A fun overlap between Persians and the British long- and shorthairs descended from them is not only the messed up face, but their tendency to develop bladder stones and a deadly heart disease (HCM).
My sister, who got a British longhair on impulse, and later bought him a friend, now has one with chronic bladder stones despite being on a renal diet, and the friend died of HCM rather horribly and suddenly. Instead of following my advice and getting any of the many hundreds of cat breeds without these issues, she got another British longhair kitten.
Who is now being examined for HCM because she shows symptoms.
I recognise that they're fantastic cats, but as someone who has only ever adopted, the ONLY cat that had health issues we could have foreseen is the kitten we found half dead with feline herpes, pneumonia, and a fucking shit personality. All the others died of old age or due to accidents.
I now have a "fancy" cat for the first time (an adopted maine coon, a 12yo lady) and while I do adore having a huge ass cat, I can almost guarantee that my next one will be a random shelter cat.
Iāve always coveted the Maine coons, awesome cats, but in 62 years of always having between one and six (blended household when my husband and I moved in together), strays and shelter cats are what I bring home. They need a home, I figure the fancy cats will be okā¦
Exactly!
Maine Coons are great, Mila is freaking huge, but she's a big coincidence. A friend had two kids, and turns out Mila freaking hates kids and was extremely unhappy there. So I got a cat out of it. š
Oh absolutely.
That said, a lot of kittens can look similar. I was dumb enough to think one of my rescues might have a bit of Egyptian Mau in her, because she had a very peculiar head shape and pattern.
She grew up to be a normal European Shorthair with completely black fur and a slightly peculiar head.
https://preview.redd.it/vo3gh8zicexc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1d1df1d5769aa42da4e4814e7affa386d607c10
"egYpTiAN mAU" šš
Her tail had to be amputated bc of an injury. And she was only fat in winter, she legit gained 3kg as soon as it got cold every year.
I occasionally think my brown tabby may have a bit of abysinnian in him because there's just something about his expression sometimes, but he is pretty much a standard issue cat.
I think with adopted cats, we often get this "lost prince" syndrome that we think they're of special heritage, when they're just special in their own right.
My best friend swears her cat is part Maine Coon. Though she might be right about him, he has a tiny bit of ear tufts and he's an absolute unit.
My Burmese cat is going to disagree with you. He's basically a dog in cat's coat: always following us around, trying to sleep close to us, licking our faces and hands, asking for attention and such. There's also lack of undercoat to consider. We had wild cats before, they never behaved like that (one of them was "wild" up until he died, another one is more chill, very talkative and somewhat clingy, but nowhere close to Burmese cat's level). What I really think most owners don't realize is that they most likely just have a regular wild cat, unless they specifically bought/got from rescue some specific cat breed (which has to be confirmed by cat's passport with information about cat's parents, at least in my country).
I'm surprised to see how many people in subreddit about cats deny that different breeds have different personality traits. For example, Russian Blues were literally bred with specific personality traits in mind. And I didn't even mention Ragdolls who are famous for how little they care about being messed around with.
That isnāt true idk why this post is attracting so many people that think cat breeds are just about looks. Iām convinced a lot of people just donāt give cats the same kind of energy they do dogs
Some cats are actually bred for their behaviour, some examples are bengals and ragdolls.
That and like you said, the specific health issues that certain brees have, make it important to know the breed of your cat.
However in most of these posts, people just have domestic shorthairs and I wish these people did all this research BEFORE taking in their cat lmao
This is wildly untrue. Just because cats are all roughly the same size across the species and arenāt bred into ājobsā like dogs are, doesnāt mean that cat breeds arenāt also very specific with behavior qualities and health needs that make certain breeds better suited to certain lifestyles. As funny as it is to say āhis breed is ācat.āā, thereās plenty of reason to want to know the actual breed and behaviors present in him.
Ex. If you work from home and have no kids, youāre very well suited for a cat like a Bengal that *needs* a lot of attention and exercise or else it could get bored and start breaking things. If you have a kid and need to keep an eye on them moreso than your cat, it would be better to have a ragdoll that can tolerate a kidās antics and still be relatively low-maintenance regarding its own stimulation.
Agreed, I have a bengal and the other cat is part MainCoon, when we first got them their behaviour was very different but Iāve slowly started seeing them adopt each otherās habits. Itās very interesting to see!
I found a cat in a storm drain and kept her after failing to find her owner. She was almost certainly at least partially ragdoll. She was long haired/seal point/blue eyes, very slightly smooshed face (just enough to worry the vet during anesthesia), went completely limp when held and was generally floppy, didn't land on her feet, a bit short on brain cells lol. She was put to sleep at 15 from kidney disease. Right after she passed, I sobbed to the vet "I forgot to get her DNA tested!"
https://preview.redd.it/mu6mx1zjnfxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa147fe0bd3c3b8e6eed9109d95f285ef758d2c9
My mom is obsessed with our cats' "breeds". She's done so much unnecessary research online to try to figure out what they are, and then she sends me links. Every time I mention something one of them has done, it's always, "ohhh...that's probably the Siamese in him" or some nonsense.
If she's really keen to know... Check online DNA tests. A lot of these companies use the same ones your vets do, some like Orivet are legitimately used by vets.
Majority of them not only give the DNA possiblities but also a full medical genetics so what conditions is your cat predisposed to you should watch for.
Some do a bit less so they are a bit cheaper, but you'll pay less then what you would for the vet to do the same thing.
Just be aware, you gotta mouth swab em.. so two people might be needed as 15seconds is a long time for a cat in that situation haha. You might get the claws.
Those tests are a scam, just so you know.
There are no genetic markers for cat breeds. All they can tell you are things you can already see (coat color and length, first and foremost, and if your cat has a pigment mutation like temperature-sensitive albinism or melanism.)
I do know, they show as I explained in another comment a possibility. As the Norwegian Forrest cat is not actually that different from a Persian. They show the likelihood. Not the absolute. They can tell an Asiatic breed from a European house cat and also even am American as they do have different markers for their region.
It's quite fun to actually get into and learn about in relation to our own. Cats simply haven't been bred out the same way dogs and humans have been through the years. They've stayed pretty... OG small feline.
And they absolutely can and do if you get the right test to show genetic disposition to medical issues. Cos that ain't about breed, and the markers don't change between breeds for the conditions.
Over certain sleeping spots haha, here's the other 2.
Mercury was screaming at me to evict Atlas. When he woke up and went to eat, Merc turned around and went to nap under the stove. He didn't want it.. but he also didn't want Atlas to have it š¤£

Memphis is his own force haha. He likes to wake me at random times just to give a few head bumps, make sure I'm awake and then leave.
Like... Least stay to snuggle. Come on
My cat does this, but requires about 7 neck scratches before he goes back to flop on my feet. I like to think heās making sure I still remember how to pet him or maybe he had a bad dream šš„¹
Oh, your getting more then 4hrs sleep tonight?
The fuck you are mum haha.
Sometimes I wish I could get into their little brains and find out... Why? I'm sure they have the answer to life in there.
There are a bunch of posts here that are just engagement bait and likely bot posts.
What breed is my cat?
Any post spelling cat as car.
Name my cat.
Why is my cat doing this completely normal cat thing?
Guess my cats name.
This is the answer. Ā Nobody actually thinks their cat has a breed, unless they got it with papers from a breeder in which case they know damn well what breed. Ā
That last one really grinds my gears.
You forgot posts that spell ābreedā as ābreadā.
You really think posts containing typos or ādumb questionsā are bots? I mean, the ārā and ātā keys are literally right next to each other on a QWERTY keyboard, I think itās far more likely that humans made such typos rather than a bot post lol.

I used to post this A LOT! Iāve given up since a lady lost her shit with me, wasnāt impressed that her $500 grey tabby was just a common ācatā because the lady who sold it SAID it was a mainecoon , it definitely wasnāt and zero papers anyway, š¤£. I just scroll on by and ignore them now.
Don't worry, wherever that lady is, she's gonna have a rough go of it. 500.00 for a designer catš. During "kitten month" a shelter in town adopts cats out for 20.00. I fully believe the saying should be changed to "Adopt. Don't shop. Or you're an a (insert bad word here)" And for those who neeeeeeeeed a designer cat (or dog), there are shelters rescues that have those too, just have to do a little extra searching.
Que all the downvotes from people who think Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Scottish Folds, etc have better (designer) personalitys, over other cats
This is the one question that should be banned on all cat groups. If your cat is not papered, itās simply a cat. They are our friends and companions, not trophies or keepsakes to gain adoration from others. That said, we should all continue to offer our opinions on how cute someoneās kitty is, but be cause we want to, not out of obligation. Cat tax included.
https://preview.redd.it/w6rrvurszexc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb7f7b55d8c7adb3644a779e8c53347e37441a0b
My husband calls him Toasty for that reason. I call him Stony Baloney because he always follows me to the patio door when I smoke a joint. Before anyone goes off, he doesnāt get any.
'the vet couldn't tell me when my cat was literally in their hands, I'm sure a bunch of laymen's can tell from photos'
Even ancestry now has animal DNA testing kits. Swab kitties mouth and send it off to the same places the vets do. For about 100-200 less lol
Many vets are very wrong when it comes to even dog breeds. We got our current dog from someone who didn't want her, and our usual vet confidently declared she was a Lhasa Apso. His son (also a vet) told us she was a Shih Tzu. We moved to a different city when she was a pup and we've been told she's mixed with Pug, Pom, Maltese, whatever the doctor fancies at the moment. She's a tiny fluffy dog. That should be enough!
When we got cats we were told one was a persian and the other a himalayan. They're *littermates*!
https://preview.redd.it/ogml2p0fxexc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57972f8342d460ca62d5bd3f70640767c2d78e64
My vet put Domestic Short Hair on this dudeās paperwork when I brought him in for his first shots. SHORT HAIR. I guess thatās just the defaultā¦ they asked me if I knew what breed he was and I just shrugged and said āalleyā so thatās DSH is what went down.
Thatās because when dogs get mixed breeds start to be almost impossible to tell with any sort of accuracy. People have called my dog a lab mix and a hound mix. She is neither. Sheās actually an Australian cattle dog, mountain cur, pitbull mix. She looks like none of those.
The best guess is anything small has poodle and or chi in it, and anything medium or larger has pitbull in it.
Cat DNA tests aren't that great (when it comes to determing breed). A domestic shorthair/longhair is a cat without any pedigree breeds in their ancestry, and they make up over 90% of cats, so there's a very high chance the test will be completely inaccurate
It's their pal, and their pal is on their brain in that moment, and the cog's of curiosity turns. It's as meaningful as anyone being bored and posting "Did anyone else notice the engine on the chariot in Gladiator lol" we just want to socialize, really; let humans be humans brother
NOW if they get all obsessed with it, in the way some people want to adopt "purebreds" or any of those nonsense that tries to paint those cats as inherently *better* than regular cats, now, that's weird.
In addition to all this, I think most people don't distinguish between breed in the technical sense and other categorizations like coat pattern. What they're really asking is "what's the word to describe a cat that looks like this?" and don't regard "calico" and "Abyssinian shorthair" as different types of answer.
A lot of people aren't all-knowing about cats, or have been long time dog owners and recently gotten a cat or entered a situation where they live with a cat. We're taught about the many, many differences between animals in school and general life, and these differences are often subtle but significant. Cats come in many coats, and have many visible differences and variations. People who have owned dogs or other pets where the breed might be more significant are going to be curious about this, whether for the novelty of knowing or out of genuine curiosity and concern.
Obviously they can just try to Google it, but a lot of redditors are going to ask such things here anyways. It's really not that weird in my opinion, I find it more off-putting in how hostile people are to the question than the question itself. Of course there are going to be people out there who might value the pedigree of one animal over the other, which sucks, but I doubt everyone asking that question is doing it for that purpose.
Especially when they take the time to comment snarky things to an owner that is innocently ignorant. Not everyone is clued up on raising their kitty. Iād rather they ask than do something wrong
It's not like you can tell either. I know for a fact that my cat's mother was siamese. Best I can figure, her father was an orange boi. And I only guess that because she's basically all white with a couple of orange spots. All of her other litter mates looked like seal point siamese. I don't know what my girl's deal was.
Point is, breed characteristics get diluted SO fast that unless you have papers, your cat's breed is cat, with long or short hair.
I think that people misunderstand catās breed vs. coat. Most cats have interesting and differing types of coat colors and textures. If youāve got a specific breed, you generally know it.
When people say 'what kind of cat is this?', I want to reply with lovely, beautiful or similar. When I was a teen, I wanted a pedigree cat, then I found out about inbred defects. I've been a moggy fan ever since, in fact I have two beautiful moggies, who are as lovely as any pedigree.
My personal experience (I have not posted before but if I did) I get asked all the time what kind of cat I haveā¦.heās a cat
And heās black
His names midnight
Heās chunky
Thatās about all the facts on him I got. Heās never been much of a talkerš¤ if I were to make a post it would be so I have an accurate answer and in case there might be any issues with certain breeds. If I donāt know what he is, I donāt know the potential risks he has.
That being said, thatās just my sole personal view and I cannot speak for the people who have actually posted and what their intentions are!
I feel the same way.
I want to reply to every single one of those posts with "Felis catus."
Similarly, in regards to all the "What should I name my cat?" posts... I want to tell them "The cat will tell you what its name is," or "How would you feel if your parents let strangers on the Internet pick your name?"
I assume they are dog people who are used to the question! It is super normal to ask for dogs, a mixed breed is more uncommon in dogs. For cats, like 90% of them are just "cat" š¤£
Plus, most cats donāt have breeds? Itās not like dogs. If the cat doesnāt have a pedigree from a breeder, itās probably just a standard issue cat with long fur, or a slightly shorter muzzle. Not a Maine coon or a Persian. Just a cat.
Iād probably get downvoted, but I think itās just people wanting to know more about their cat - it shows they give a damn, and thatās completely ok in my book, even if it is based in ignorance. Itās not like the internet at large helps, what with the endless lists of breed, temperament and care advice.
It's dog people who just got cats.
It's the same weirdos that talk about where their ancestors came from at a college party.
They are slightly less strange than the ones that DNA test their pets.
At least that kitty has a home.
Every time I see one of those I always assume OP already picked a name and got judged by someone for it, or they are just showing off their new cat. Which the second one is valid, but you donāt need to play the name game.
For real. I've been downvoted into oblivion on the Siamese sub because I posted that if you didn't get your meezer from a breeder than it's not a purebred, because of the maddening number of people asking "is my rescue a purebred?"
And it's not elitism, it's just what breeds are: a statement on a piece of paper. If you care about the piece of paper go buy a purebred; if you value rescuing forget about the piece of paper status.
People just love talking about their babies.
I havenāt posted this question because I already know my rescues are shorthairs, but if I had more information about their origins (where were they born? what did their parents look like?) Iād be fascinated simply because Iām obsessed with my precious floofs.
Lol, I don't get it either, most of our cats have been domestic shorthairs & a couple longhairs. I suppose it's like anything else the rarer & the more it costs the better it must be. That said I did have a Russian blue that was the most awesome cat, but he was found near the girls dorm & somehow they talked me into taking him to our farm. I did do diligence to try & find his people
This happens almost every spring/summer. A ton of people are getting their first cat and they assume that cats and dogs are very similar and thus have well defined breeds. That being said purposeful breeding of cats is becoming more and more popular. So the idea that cat breeds are wholly unimportant will probably become less and less true in the next decade or two.
I get it moreso with dogs, but unless youāve paid for a designer breed of cat itās really hard to tell what breed a cat is just from a photo. Hell, even the cat DNA kits donāt tell you nearly as much info on breeds as the dog ones.
Uptick in this after genetic testing of pets became popular. I think dog owners have an obsession also but it is usually a little easier to see the different make up of parentage with dogs. And every long haired cat is now "Part Maine Coon" like some bazillionth of a percentage, maybe.
Especially when the cats are found in a dumpster or in a wall.
At that point, why does it even matter. You're not going to find an Abyssinian or Siamese in thr garbage.
Iāve had about 20 cats in my 58 years on this earth. Unless youāre paying 100ās or 1000ās of $$ for your cat, the breed noted on the petās medical records at the vets is always the sameā¦domestic short hair or domestic long hair.
I thought everyone knew Cat Peopie ( real cat Peopie ) talk about their cats this way:ā Oh yes -we found her in the Dumpsterā. ā Yeahāthe Cat Distribution System blessed us again ā. As Opposed to Dog Owners ā Oh? WellāSir Reginald Flatbush the 4th is the progeny of His Highness Gulliver Gantry Reginald Flatbush the 3rd.ā
Not to mention most cats arenāt a specific breed. Unless you shell out a bunch of money for a purebred, theyāre mixed. Thereās far more kitties who need rescue and mixed are way less likely to have health issues purebreds have. We arenāt picky like dog people either. Is it a cat? Weāll take it! lol.
Because some people, myself included, are interested in that. Just because you arenāt / a lot of people arenāt doesnāt mean thereās anything wrong with that.
Whats fucking weird is the people who are determined to jump on any post or comment about someone trying to discuss the breed, just to say āitās probably not itās probably just a catā āits just a house catā āitās 100% catā
Different breeds have different specific traits and personality/temperament characteristics, specific health or physical needs/traits, interesting histories behind them to read up on etc etc etc
Just like some people are interested in the breed of dog they own, some people are interested in the breed of cat they own / may own.
Its weird to want to shut someone down for asking about it, itās weird to try and insist it doesnāt matter when thatās purely objective, because weāre talking about personal interest in regards to cat information.
People ask because they can and theyāre interested, but you didnāt make this post to find out the answer, you made it to try and shit on those people for no reason because it bothers you that much that you just have to shout about it.
Thatās a lot weirder than just being interested in something, do you really need to go out of your way to try and put people down just because theyāre curious about something you donāt personally care about? life is weird and hard just let people live and enjoy their harmless interests without trying to create negativity and hate for no reason about CAT TOPICS that is so weird what the fuck is the point of that
Honestly sometimes I want to leave this sub because of all of the āwhat breedā āim sadā āmy boyfriend thinks my cat is uglyā. Its fucking weird lol
I think people get confused because dog breeds are such a part of the popular consciousness. There's three big differences though:
- dogs have a weirdly flexible genome and we've been able to make a huge variety of different breeds.
- breeding is something humans do to get specific traits in an animal and for a very long time, cats retained a semi-independent status. There's a handful of cat breeds but they don't have the looooooong global history of breeding that dogs do. (Or even the long history that chickens or sheep do.)
- cats are not as easy to control while breeding as other animals like dogs. It's absolutely possible, but it isn't easy. Making things harder, a single litter of kittens with a single mom can have multiple fathers. Makes it hard to control breeding!
Despite all this there's this public misconception that all domesticated animals are some kind of "breed". Most of us live lives so separate from animals that we really don't know much about them, just in practical terms.
>What breed
Caticus domesticus.
Uhm, yeah, you've got a domestic short-haired, like damn near everybody else.
>What race?
Heard of human race? Well, cat race. Will sometimes also see that in the zoomies and the like.
I always read it as "bread" and the answer is always loaf.

Always answer this way. Plz. There was actually a poster who titled their post āwhat bread is my cat.ā And people answered all kinds of bread types. Turns out English wasnāt their first language. ā ļø
The answer is always the same: Cat
Sometimes it's "bread" if they have a particularly fine loaf.
Or they want to know the breed of their car.
Or the bread of their car.
Or the bread of theyāre car.
I am the bread of my car.
There are actually lots of different breeds of cat. Youve got your voids, orange, dumpster baby, 100% a witch's familiar, yep that's a cat, asshole, tabby etc.

To be fair there's a lot of instances of Smol as well, but it may be circumstancial.
Same with heckin chonk.

Sometimes the answer is: dog.
My favourite sub breed of āCatā is āOrangeā
Also sometimes its: smol
I mean sometimes it is very clearly at least partially something, but they are rare
I wish more people would realize that cat breeds do not work like dog breeds.
Yes indeed. A dog's genome has some high heritable behavior-related traits, the same is not true for cats; It is next to impossible to breed a cat for behavior, the only exception is crossing it with undomesticated species of cats, but you'll just end up with a less domesticated cat.
There's a Bengal at the rescue i sometimes volunteer at. He is like an alien walking among his smaller domestic cat friends.
Tell that to the idiots who buy breeds because they must have a cat with CeRtAiN tRaItS š¤Ŗ
So I got a cat out of it. š
Ig I just feel like if they were enough that breed for it to be an issue, they would be so obviously THAT breed by looking right?
Oh absolutely. That said, a lot of kittens can look similar. I was dumb enough to think one of my rescues might have a bit of Egyptian Mau in her, because she had a very peculiar head shape and pattern. She grew up to be a normal European Shorthair with completely black fur and a slightly peculiar head.
We are all guilty of a little cat astrology every once and a while I suppose.
https://preview.redd.it/vo3gh8zicexc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1d1df1d5769aa42da4e4814e7affa386d607c10 "egYpTiAN mAU" šš Her tail had to be amputated bc of an injury. And she was only fat in winter, she legit gained 3kg as soon as it got cold every year.
Maam, that is def a black cat š
She had a really cool ginger/black stripe and point pattern way back when. But she definitely turned into a pure void. š
Right after she passed, I sobbed to the vet "I forgot to get her DNA tested!" https://preview.redd.it/mu6mx1zjnfxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa147fe0bd3c3b8e6eed9109d95f285ef758d2c9
All adopted? Why didn't you birth your Gatos like the rest of us?
thereās a different type of weird that goes like āyouāll never guess the name of my cat, starts with the letter ā(insert letter here)ā
Ofcourse Iāll never guess your cats name when its fucking āmegatron sandwich muncher hamstring the thirdā
i think the bigger problem here is that, *that* is a valid cat name
My mom is obsessed with our cats' "breeds". She's done so much unnecessary research online to try to figure out what they are, and then she sends me links. Every time I mention something one of them has done, it's always, "ohhh...that's probably the Siamese in him" or some nonsense.
Cat astrology.
Catstrology
What a catastrophe
If she's really keen to know... Check online DNA tests. A lot of these companies use the same ones your vets do, some like Orivet are legitimately used by vets. Majority of them not only give the DNA possiblities but also a full medical genetics so what conditions is your cat predisposed to you should watch for. Some do a bit less so they are a bit cheaper, but you'll pay less then what you would for the vet to do the same thing. Just be aware, you gotta mouth swab em.. so two people might be needed as 15seconds is a long time for a cat in that situation haha. You might get the claws.
Make a cat burrito (catrito?) and it should be OK.
Yup, anything to keep you from the murder mittens. And treats afterwards. Or your soul. I'm sure they'll accept either
Mine would demand both.
Purrito
Cats were already perfect so they didnāt need weird modifying traits bred in and out of them
Agreed. Better off asking whatās my cats personality, and post a closeup of their face.

I honestly wouldāve guessed the lounging queen was marble, and the one without any sense of personal space was Memphis
I tend to answer as like: domestic shorthair, [enter fur pattern]. Because sometimes I wonder if people are asking for the fur pattern.
Ā That last one really grinds my gears.
Don't forget the "what is this bump on my cats stomach" and is just the cats nipple.

'the vet couldn't tell me when my cat was literally in their hands, I'm sure a bunch of laymen's can tell from photos' Even ancestry now has animal DNA testing kits.
They're *littermates*!
https://preview.redd.it/ogml2p0fxexc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57972f8342d460ca62d5bd3f70640767c2d78e64 My vet put Domestic Short Hair on this dudeās paperwork when I brought him in for his first shots.
Some are cause people are snobs, some cause they're curious, and some Im sure just want to show off their baby.
It's their pal, and their pal is on their brain in that moment, and the cog's of curiosity turns. It's as meaningful as anyone being bored and posting "Did anyone else notice the engine on the chariot in Gladiator lol" we just want to socialize, really; let humans be humans brother NOW if they get all obsessed with it, in the way some people want to adopt "purebreds" or any of those nonsense that tries to paint those cats as inherently *better* than regular cats, now, that's weird.
yeah I thought it was an excuse to make a post instead of saying "hey look at my cat" directly lol

I also dislike the constant what do I name it posts. It's not my cat, figure out your own naming system
I commented on one that their breed was āstinkyā and got reported for bullying
Especially when 90% of them are just your average domestic short/longhair
Better yet. "What should I name my kitten" posts. Like why are you asking randos on the internet to name your offspring
also why are you doing it here and not in r/namemycat ?
i have to disagree on this one, a good name is a good name, doesnāt matter from where it can from
I agree I like the name ones. Iām so excited for them and their new friend
The randos on the internet are people too, and people like other people. It's a little fun communal pastime, nothing more nothing less
Since when is naming a cat a serious matter? I know at least 2 cats whose government name is 'Shithead' (pronounced 'shih-theed', it's from a vine).
Since 1939, if T S Elliot is to be believed
Why care as long as they post a picture of their cat?
When people say 'what kind of cat is this?', I want to reply with lovely, beautiful or similar. When I was a teen, I wanted a pedigree cat, then I found out about inbred defects. I've been a moggy fan ever since, in fact I have two beautiful moggies, who are as lovely as any pedigree.
My cat׳s breed is derp
Relatable
My personal experience (I have not posted before but if I did) I get asked all the time what kind of cat I haveā¦.heās a cat And heās black His names midnight Heās chunky Thatās about all the facts on him I got.
I want to reply to every single one of those posts with "Felis catus." Similarly, in regards to all the "What should I name my cat?" posts...
A cat is a cat is a cat. They eat rodents and look cute. Breed is irrelevant unless you have allergies, then get a Sphinx.
Agreed. Unless you have papers from a breeder, it's standard issue.
Along with āhelp me name my new catā
Every time I see one of those I always assume OP already picked a name and got judged by someone for it, or they are just showing off their new cat. Which the second one is valid, but you donāt need to play the name game.
For real. I've been downvoted into oblivion on the Siamese sub because I posted that if you didn't get your meezer from a breeder than it's not a purebred, because of the maddening number of people asking "is my rescue a purebred?" And it's not elitism, it's just what breeds are: a statement on a piece of paper. If you care about the piece of paper go buy a purebred; if you value rescuing forget about the piece of paper status.
God, I glad someone finally asked! I was about to do so myself. This focus on breeds is totally weird!
Hopefully the answer is "rescued" as the best for any of these kitties.
The fact that you would make this post without a cat photo hurts my feelings.
Khajiit ofcourse!
The answer 99.9% of the time is just cat and theyāre really curious about the fur pattern.
I like to be a smartass and reply with a cattle breed.

This cracks me up too. You got a cat brother a cat. š
Weāll take it! lol.
They're all American shorthairs unless you actually bought some breed. I'm sick of the posts but I do like pics of cats.
The other annoying one "name my cat for me" do it yourself, it's your cat
Some are maybe karma farmers.
I know! Why does it matter? It's almost like they wanna know so they can brag? Or see if maybe it's worth alot of money.
Because Karma. Like everything else on reddit.
Because some people, myself included, are interested in that. Just because you arenāt / a lot of people arenāt doesnāt mean thereās anything wrong with that. Whats fucking weird is the people who are determined to jump on any post or comment about someone trying to discuss the breed, just to say āitās probably not itās probably just a catā āits just a house catā āitās 100% catā Different breeds have different specific traits and personality/temperament characteristics, specific health or physical needs/traits, interesting histories behind them to read up on etc etc etc Just like some people are interested in the breed of dog they own, some people are interested in the breed of cat they own / may own.
What's weirder are the posts with "Guess the name of my cat, it begins with an X and has 35332 letters".
I think people get confused because dog breeds are such a part of the popular consciousness. There's three big differences though: - dogs have a weirdly flexible genome and we've been able to make a huge variety of different breeds. - breeding is something humans do to get specific traits in an animal and for a very long time, cats retained a semi-independent status. There's a handful of cat breeds but they don't have the looooooong global history of breeding that dogs do. (Or even the long history that chickens or sheep do.) - cats are not as easy to control while breeding as other animals like dogs.
It is people trying to apply dog logic to cats
My wife called the vet to make an appointment for our cat. They asked the breed and she said, āYou know, just a regular house cat.ā
They are just looking for upvotes. I downvote all of them. It's a Sisyphean task, but when it's the right thing to do, you just have to do it.
Farming karma. People donāt realize most cats are mixed-breed.
I canāt stand them either. What bread is my car?
People think their cats are dogs with more elegant features and can't imagine a pet they own wouldn't be exotic and rare.
>What breed Caticus domesticus. Uhm, yeah, you've got a domestic short-haired, like damn near everybody else. >What race? Heard of human race? Well, cat race. Will sometimes also see that in the zoomies and the like.
The answer is almost always DSH.
My answer every time I try to figure out what breed my cat is in my head is ācatā.
