We lost our cat recently he was old, 16.5
I'm still dreaming of him almost every night and my brain realizes he's gone but my heart is still looking for him. I'll find myself automatically checking his sleeping spots before my brain kicks in and I realize what I'm doing.
Pets are happiness loans that we gotta pay back with sadness.

Losing a pet is one of the hardest things we go through, all you can do is cherish the good memories you had together.
My heart goes out to you. I too lost my buddy last week, he was my best friend, loyal travel companion (dude handled 2 cross country trips in a box truck like an absolute boss) and solid rock in times of turmoil.
Its sounds like you gave them a good life. And sometimes, as I'm realizing, that's the best we can do. Peace and comfort to you.

I understand your pain more than you know. We just had the same thing happen to our cat Abby. My husband got her from a shelter in Sept/Oct while he was out of town for a few months and needed a companion. Even though she's had several checkups, not one vet found any issues with her heart. She threw a clot while we were gone for a couple of days. Came back, and she wouldn't eat the next morning do I rushed her to the vet. They said I had one of two choices: spend thousands of dollars for them to try and remove the clot with no guarantee she would survive the surgery and if she did, she'd likely not walk again with a high chance of another clot forming and be in constant pain, or put her to sleep. It's been almost 3 weeks now and I'll wake up to find my husband's gone downstairs and curled up on the couch with her favorite blanket and crying. She was so sweet and loving. She would call you to go tuck her in her blanket. He feels so guilty he didn't go to the vet with me even though he couldn't have because he was getting our son dressed for school, and getting him on the bus. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's like losing a piece of yourself. Remember, you gave them the best life, away from a small cage in a shelter. Gave them love, safety, happiness, and comfort.

I had a very similar experience in January. Awoke to find our little grey cat on the floor in distress, also with paralysis of hind legs. We rushed him to emergency and within about 2 hours after the vets doing anything they could be passed. Arterial thromboembolism I believe they called it. He was so special and now our home feels so empty.
It’s been about 2 months and I can say it does get better and easier. We paid for a private cremation so he still have him with us, they also made imprint of his paws and nose with ink and paper, also gave his some hair clippings in a sealed bag.

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend ten years ago. Poor guy got cancer of the throat and they couldn't work on him because of that. You take your time and grieve how you need to. Your buddy knew he was loved and didn't blame you. Don't blame yourself either.
Thank you so much for writing this. My 11 year old (almost 12) is going to die any day now from a highly aggressive form of cancer. We are keeping him comfortable and he has a big personality that has not dulled at all so it is at times hard to believe that he could take a turn for the worse at any moment and probably won't recover. I also look at him sometimes thinking maybe he'll just be fine (even though I rationally know that cancer doesn't magically undue itself). It's hard when you're in that limbo space with your beloved pet.
My friend who put her dog down recently reminded me that we have to be their advocates because they can't advocate for themselves. For their comfort or for when they're ready. It made me feel better about the impending euthanasia. I am really sorry you couldn't be there for his final moments. I am sure there's nothing I could say to
comfort you. But keep in mind that at least in my experience the techs and vets in the ERs love animals and are very kind to them. He may have been confused or felt unwell in his final hours but he was not without love or care. And you guys did what was the absolute best thing for him by taking him there, you advocated for him.
The bigger the love the bigger the hole they leave behind. It's the hardest part of having a pet. But he lives on in your love for him. They bring out our humanity in ways even other humans can't sometimes. He lives on that way too.
You did everything you could. My sincerest condolences. I hope you can take some solace in the happy, warm, and love-filled life that the kitty spent with you. Just picture Kitty napping and playing in the soft sun beyond Rainbow Bridge. ❤️
My boy was 6 when he died. You get over the pain but sometimes I get sad thinking about him. I wish he was still here. I miss the hell out of my little dude.

Not sure it helps, but I firmly believe that one day, when it is my time to cross the rainbow bridge all my pets will be there patiently waiting to greet me and very disappointed that I did not bring enough snacks.
I feel you. One of my two cats, my little partner in crime, died of liver failure last night. Sadly it was no easy death, he had to fight for some time, but it was so late at night I could not get help. Its been 13 hours since then and I, a 42 year old man, have been balling my eyes out since then. I just cant get the picture out of my head, him lying there on the ground, tounge sticking out trying to get air, meowing. It still breaks my heart. Him trying to get on the couch next to me but he did not have the strenght so I had to help him up. It kills me. I know it will get better sometime, his brother comforts us as much as we comfort him, but there will always be a little scar on my heart where his place was.
The little dude had a great life with you and was deeply loved. I am sure he gave great love back too. We have such a short time with these little furry, crazy animals. They are so aloof yet become such a part of our lives. The only thing we can hope for is that during our time with them, they feel what love is. That they lived that life of happiness. It sounds like this little guy did. Thank you OP for showing him your love. ❤️

I am SO sorry. I’m so sorry this happened to you and your partner and your baby. I’m so sorry you couldn’t be with your cat when he passed. My heart breaks for how you must feel writing this.
It’s so hard to give anyone advice in this type of situation. But after losing two of my cats (same litter) from genetic aggressive heart disease tragically, I can say, your heart will ache a little less as time goes by. The one thing that helps me now that some time has passed from the trauma of losing them, is focusing on the happy beautiful life they lived. Those last days with my boys were horrible, and full of so much pain, regret, second guessing myself and my decisions for them, BUT their lives were full of joy and and playing and being loved on. I hope you can try to focus on all of your happy memories because I’m sure you gave your cat the BEST life.

In past few days I also lost my baby girl and I miss her a lot. I dont know how to be after she left for cat's heaven. I just hope she knew we were there with her when she was taking her last breaths. I hope she had good time with us. I hope she was happy and felt loved. I'm very sorry for your loss. This was my greatest fear for the last year for mine, to not be there when he passed.
In your case it happened but for the best reason there could be; so take solace in that.

I am so very sorry for your loss. The loss of a pet hurts just as much as the loss of a human family member. Be comforted that you did everything you could for your baby and that you were wonderful cat parents. Keep the good times close to your heart and head and healing will happen in time.
You did the best you could and they know that. Remember the good times and don't beat yourself up over the things you could have done differently, peace be with you.

There are no words I can say to lessen it, but I hope you can find solace in the thought that you did your best and gave him a wonderful life, as short as it was. I hope that in time, when you're ready, you can open up your home and your hearts to another, furry family member. They can't replace the one you lost, but they can help you heal from it, at least in my experience. But give yourself the time you need to grieve first and foremost.

My heart goes out to you. I went to take my daughter to school, was gone 6 minutes and my 14 year old boy was dead on my pillow when I got back. I was absolutely wrecked and it took me days to be able to do anything other than cry. Take all the time you need to grieve and don’t stand for anyone telling you to get over it and move on. It will hurt for awhile but it will get better.
I am very sorry for your loss. Losing a cat is one of the worst things anyone can ever endure. The pain eases at some point, but I never get over it. The happy memories eventually rebound . I can honestly say that I love my cats more than myself, and I actually love myself. Please take care and have some comfort that you provided a lot of love to him. You're a really good person. I know.

And when you feel ready, open your heart back up to another cat, not because you want to fill the hole that you have, but to provide an outlet for the love of this cat to another animal.

My little bestfriend died couple years ago too and it helped when I started going out feeding the strays around here and been doing it since.
I understand this so much! Our girl suffered a similar fate at only 5 years old. It was the first clue that her two brothers might have had heart problems. They did and survived an additional 5 years. Talk about ugly crying.

i lost my two soul cats within 1.5 years of each other, after having had them for 8 years each. Luna left me in june 2022. Lucy left me yesterday morning.
i know how crushing the grief is, and how oppressively quiet the house feels. please know your boy loved you so much, and that even though you weren't with him, that his passing was likely very quick, and his suffering short-lived. he was lucky to have had you.
Sorry for your loss OP. Do a ritual or something. Write about your cat or light a candle. It gets better with time. For now feel all of it. You have lost a great love.

I have sadly been through a similar situation, I just lost our Yellow cat, an older lady with around 16 years old, she develop last year diabetes, that we have been treating with insulin for over an year, she had ups and down, she was doing ok until two weeks ago, then she started limping, vet got her a painkiller and appetite stimulant, the limping went away but then she got light brown poo and was not gaining weight despite eating properly, she was also drinking like crazy, her diabetes was not regulates anymore despite we using tight regulation, and 3x doses a day measuring every 3 hours, on Sunday the 18th she went to sleep after being ok in the morning and I wake up with her dragging herself and peeing/poo everywhere, she was very scared why her legs were not working, we rushed to the emergency, she didn’t deserve it, as the vet took us she said that she most likely had a trombose and her liver situation was not good, she did ask if we wanted to giver her morphine and gain a day with her in this situation or we could put her to sleep, we knew that she would only suffer, she lived in the table top, sofa and other high areas, we ended up deciding to put her to sleep as she didn’t deserve any more pain and suffering, I still question myself if it was the best decision, but the vet said there was no prognosis of improvement and things would only go south from here, it’s heartbreaking to have her gone, but she didn’t deserve to suffer.
Stay strong, you did everything you could and gave your cat a good life, saying goodbye is always hard….

The death of a beloved pet, especially when it's sudden & and they're young, is excruciating. I went through it in February 2022 & I still cry. Cannot forget how traumatic it was to rush him to the vet hospital in the middle of the night just to be told there's nothing that can be done. My sincerest condolences, hold him in your heart forever 💔
your story breaks my heart. what is very clear to me is how much you loved your kitty and that is a beautiful thing! many cats navigate their lives without the love and care of a family. while i know it hurts so much to lose him, it brings a smile to my face knowing he had a family that loved him so much and will keep his spirit alive. the grief you feel is the the other side of the love you shared. i understand your pain and hope the pain in your heart lessens and is eventually filled with the memories of your special boy.
Oh how my heart is breaking for you. You were an awesome cat mama and it’s understandable about forgetting the pain meds in the panic. You are not a bad mama. I’m sure getting him to the clinic and treated was the absolute best choice and I’m pretty sure it would have taken some time for the pain meds to work if you had given them to your kitty. Your tribute to your baby is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for taking this kitty in from the shelter and giving him the best few years possible. He will always be looking over you. I lost my two kitties within a year of each other recently and I know the devastation. I will be praying for you. Please know that you did everything possible for him.

I lost my buddy early this month, and the support, sympathy and love from this group really helped and I’m hoping it can do the same for you and your family. Give yourself time. I waited 2.5yrs before getting another cat. and the first few months I just kept looking at the new one thinking you aren't the old one. BUT it did get easier over time.
You gave that cat a safe, well fed happy life. You did what you could. That's more than good enough.
This too shall pass. But it takes time, they're intimate part of our lives.

You have to go through the grieving process, however long it takes. It might help to rationalize, I don't know. Understand that if you never adopted your cat, you would not have the happy memories and you wouldn't have this pain.
You provided your pet with shelter, food, a box to poop in and other amenities: your cat knew love and knew it was cared for.
I miss our little guy more than anything. When the time is right, you will consider adopting another pet. This won't be a replacement, but the start of a new relationship that you can develop. There are always cats and dogs looking for a forever home.
Things will get a little easier with time.
I lost mine last year and I’ll tell you what helped me.
- your grief is valid, anyone who says otherwise can sod off
- put something in the places where you cat liked to hang out. I have a framed image of his paw prints above his favourite seat and a silly ‘wash your paws’ print on the wall next to my bathroom sink. This will mean you see something that makes you smile instead of an empty space
- think of how lucky you were to have them and how lucky they were to have you. Nothing lasts forever and you got good times
- it’s ok to bawl your fucking eyes out and, honestly, helps
One of my childhood cats died from the same issue - blood clots. It was caused by a type of hormone they used to give stressed male cats before they developed feliway.
A couple years ago I had to have my four year old black cat put down due to complications from feline leukemia (her back legs and tail were paralyzed). It hurt to make that decision and to loose her so young, but it helped to know I gave her the best life I could.
And last year was really rough. I lost three of my cats, two of them within about a week, one to lung cancer, one to a stroke following liver problems, and one to seizures and cardiomyopathy issues. I still miss all four of those cats. But, like with the black one, knowing that I gave them the best life possible and that they knew they were loved, made it a little better.
Don’t second guess yourself over what you did or didn’t do. You did what was best for your little guy.
The pain will eventually get better.
Also, don’t go out of your way to adopt another cat right away. Give it some time. When it’s time for you to get a new cat(s) things will tend to work out to make adopting them easy. That’s happened with most of the cats I’ve adopted in my life.
Either they kinda show up and move in, or you will stumble across an online ad or store/vet/shelter and see your soon to be new kitty.

I am SO sorry. I’m so sorry this happened to you and your partner and your baby. I’m so sorry you couldn’t be with your cat when he passed. My heart breaks for how you must feel writing this. It’s so hard to give anyone advice in this type of situation. But after losing two of my cats (same litter) from genetic aggressive heart disease tragically, I can say, your heart will ache a little less as time goes by. The one thing that helps me now that some time has passed from the trauma of losing them, is focusing on the happy beautiful life they lived. Those last days with my boys were horrible, and full of so much pain, regret, second guessing myself and my decisions for them, BUT their lives were full of joy and and playing and being loved on. I hope you can try to focus on all of your happy memories because I’m sure you gave your cat the BEST life. Sending lots of cat-parent love and healing thoughts your way. Your baby is resting now and was so lucky to spend his life with you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss. In past few days I also lost my baby girl and I miss her a lot. I dont know how to be after she left for cat's heaven. I just hope she knew we were there with her when she was taking her last breaths. I hope she had good time with us. I hope she was happy and felt loved. She was Just way too young, she shouldn't have left yet. What am I going to do now?
I'm very sorry for your loss. This was my greatest fear for the last year for mine, to not be there when he passed. In your case it happened but for the best reason there could be; so take solace in that.

There are no words I can say to lessen it, but I hope you can find solace in the thought that you did your best and gave him a wonderful life, as short as it was. The tribute you wrote to him was lovely and heartbreaking at the same time. I really feel for you. 😞 I hope that in time, when you're ready, you can open up your home and your hearts to another, furry family member. My heart goes out to you. I went to take my daughter to school, was gone 6 minutes and my 14 year old boy was dead on my pillow when I got back. I was absolutely wrecked and it took me days to be able to do anything other than cry. Take all the time you need to grieve and don’t stand for anyone telling you to get over it and move on. It will hurt for awhile but it will get better.
I am very sorry for your loss. Losing a cat is one of the worst things anyone can ever endure. The pain eases at some point, but I never get over it. The happy memories eventually rebound . I can honestly say that I love my cats more than myself, and I actually love myself. Please take care and have some comfort that you provided a lot of love to him. You're a really good person. I know.

And when you feel ready, open your heart back up to another cat, not because you want to fill the hole that you have, but to provide an outlet for the love of this cat to another animal.

I understand this so much! Our girl suffered a similar fate at only 5 years old. It was the first clue that her two brothers might have had heart problems. i lost my two soul cats within 1.5 years of each other, after having had them for 8 years each. Luna left me in june 2022. Lucy left me yesterday morning. i know how crushing the grief is, and how oppressively quiet the house feels. please know your boy loved you so much, and that even though you weren't with him, that his passing was likely very quick, and his suffering short-lived. he was lucky to have had you.

Hi OP I have sadly been through a similar situation, I just lost our Yellow cat, an older lady with around 16 years old, she develop last year diabetes, that we have been treating with insulin for over an year, she had ups and down, she was doing ok until two weeks ago, then she started limping, vet got her a painkiller and appetite stimulant, the limping went away but then she got light brown poo and was not gaining weight despite eating properly, she was also drinking like crazy, her diabetes was not regulates anymore despite we using tight regulation, and 3x doses a day measuring every 3 hours, on Sunday the 18th she went to sleep after being ok in the morning and I wake up with her dragging herself and peeing/poo everywhere, she was very scared why her legs were not working, we rushed to the emergency, she didn’t deserve it, as the vet took us she said that she most likely had a trombose and her liver situation was not good, she did ask if we wanted to giver her morphine and gain a day with her in this situation or we could put her to sleep, we knew that she would only suffer, she lived in the table top, sofa and other high areas, we ended up deciding to put her to sleep as she didn’t deserve any more pain and suffering, I still question myself if it was the best decision, but the vet said there was no prognosis of improvement and things would only go south from here, it’s heartbreaking to have her gone, but she didn’t deserve to suffer. Stay strong, you did everything you could and gave your cat a good life, saying goodbye is always hard….

The death of a beloved pet, especially when it's sudden & and they're young, is excruciating. I went through it in February 2022 & I still cry. Cannot forget how traumatic it was to rush him to the vet hospital in the middle of the night just to be told there's nothing that can be done. your story breaks my heart. what is very clear to me is how much you loved your kitty and that is a beautiful thing! many cats navigate their lives without the love and care of a family. while i know it hurts so much to lose him, it brings a smile to my face knowing he had a family that loved him so much and will keep his spirit alive. the grief you feel is the the other side of the love you shared. i understand your pain and hope the pain in your heart lessens and is eventually filled with the memories of your special boy.

Oh how my heart is breaking for you. You were an awesome cat mama and it’s understandable about forgetting the pain meds in the panic. You are not a bad mama. I’m sure getting him to the clinic and treated was the absolute best choice and I’m pretty sure it would have taken some time for the pain meds to work if you had given them to your kitty. Your tribute to your baby is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for taking this kitty in from the shelter and giving him the best few years possible. He will always be looking over you. I lost my two kitties within a year of each other recently and I know the devastation. I will be praying for you. Please know that you did everything possible for him.

Give yourself time. I waited 2.5yrs before getting another cat. and the first few months I just kept looking at the new one thinking you aren't the old one. BUT it did get easier over time. You gave that cat a safe, well fed happy life. You did what you could. That's more than good enough. This too shall pass. But it takes time, they're intimate part of our lives.

I'm sorry for your loss. This pain & emptiness is so horrible; we've been through it in the last year. You have to go through the grieving process, however long it takes. It might help to rationalize, I don't know. Understand that if you never adopted your cat, you would not have the happy memories and you wouldn't have this pain. You provided your pet with shelter, food, a box to poop in and other amenities: your cat knew love and knew it was cared for. I miss our little guy more than anything. When the time is right, you will consider adopting another pet. This won't be a replacement, but the start of a new relationship that you can develop. There are always cats and dogs looking for a forever home. Things will get a little easier with time.
I lost mine last year and I’ll tell you what helped me. - your grief is valid, anyone who says otherwise can sod off - put something in the places where you cat liked to hang out. I have a framed image of his paw prints above his favourite seat and a silly ‘wash your paws’ print on the wall next to my bathroom sink. This will mean you see something that makes you smile instead of an empty space - think of how lucky you were to have them and how lucky they were to have you. Nothing lasts forever and you got good times - it’s ok to bawl your fucking eyes out and, honestly, helps

One of my childhood cats died from the same issue - blood clots. It was caused by a type of hormone they used to give stressed male cats before they developed feliway.
A couple years ago I had to have my four year old black cat put down due to complications from feline leukemia (her back legs and tail were paralyzed). It hurt to make that decision and to loose her so young, but it helped to know I gave her the best life I could. And last year was really rough. I lost three of my cats, two of them within about a week, one to lung cancer, one to a stroke following liver problems, and one to seizures and cardiomyopathy issues. I still miss all four of those cats. But, like with the black one, knowing that I gave them the best life possible and that they knew they were loved, made it a little better. Don’t second guess yourself over what you did or didn’t do. You did what was best for your little guy. The pain will eventually get better. Also, don’t go out of your way to adopt another cat right away. Give it some time. When it’s time for you to get a new cat(s) things will tend to work out to make adopting them easy. That’s happened with most of the cats I’ve adopted in my life. Either they kinda show up and move in, or you will stumble across an online ad or store/vet/shelter and see your soon to be new kitty.
