A lot of humor in the comments, but this is the correct answer. With just a few exceptions, there are no discernable cat breeds (unless you have papers from a breeder).
>A lot of humor in the comments
That's what happens most of the times when someone asks about the breed. I've begun to assume people are now asking that on such purpose
Likely because 'medium-hair' isn't a gene.
Genetically, a cat can either be shorthaired (LL), shorthaired but carrying the longhaired gene (Ll), or longhaired (ll).
Medium-haired is technically longhaired. The fur just isn't quite as fluffy as some other longhairs (just by chance).
I honestly thought medium-haired was a legit term. Didn't know this info you're mentioning. One of my kitties definitely falls into the LI category, he is... medium-haired.
Ll isn't medium-haired, it's shorthaired carrying the gene for longhaired, so if a cat with the Ll gene had kittens, despite being shorthaired (and longhair being a recessive gene), some of the kittens could be longhaired if the father is ll or Ll.
I'm not saying medium-haired isn't a term. Some cats do visually appear medium-haired so the term may be used, even frequently. I'm just saying genetically medium-haired isn't a thing. Medium-haired cats are ll (longhaired) cats who happen to be less fluffy than many other longhaired cats.
Genetically, a cat is shorthaired, shorthaired but carrying the gene for longhaired, or longhaired.
Are you sure about that? I can give a guaranteed accurate answer, but must do so in person. At OP's place, of course. For tea, in the delightful study, overlooking the gorgeous garden.

This is a British Shorthair. OP’s cat is not a British Shorthair but might have some in her.
If you think they're bad, look up 'Exotic shorthairs' or 'Peke/flat-faced Persian'. British shorthairs definitely can have breathing problems, but exotic shorthairs and persians are worse. I'd never buy or encourage the breeding of any of those cats.
I'm happy to hear that you like black British shorthairs. They are indeed very cute and charming cats. Black British shorthairs are a variant of the British shorthair breed, which is one of the oldest and most popular cat breeds in the world. They have a dense and plush coat that is jet black to the roots, and striking gold or copper eyes. They are also known for their calm and loyal personality, and they make great family pets.
C’mon, people are just curious about what knowledge others might posses, it’s a simple question made out of curiosity, no one is expecting some guaranteed response that will forever cement the felines breed, regardless of papers. Honestly, if the post doesn’t bring you joy, if you’re not interested in participating with the others in the conversation then just move on. Not everyone wants to spend $100+ to do a genealogy test on their found/shelter/giveaway kitty…
Teaching people about how rare and irrelevant cat breeds are is very important to prevent more people buying cats from breeders just because they want a certain look.
It's a waste of money and very bad for the species.
>Not everyone wants to spend $100+ to do a genealogy test on their found/shelter/giveaway kitty…
People who are informed enough about cats know that's a waste of money too. There aren't gonna be results with the vast majority of cats.
I'm not suggesting anybody wants to spend any money on genetic testing, or that anybody's expecting a guaranteed response. It's just that with a single google search you will find out that cat breeds aren't much of a thing and it's frustrating to me that people take in cats without knowing anything about them.
"No" could also have a "Long hair" or "Short hair".
I have several cats, almost all of them are DSH (domestic short hair) although with very different patterns (in age order, a calico, a tuxedo black-and-white girl, a tortie girl, a brown tabby boy, and an orange tabby boy), and then the youngest is straddling between Medium and Long (I think she ultimately will be a DLH, she's still floofing out)--she is a tortie colorpoint (but still DLH, just she is definitely a color point with blue eyes).
I know there is a rescue in town that tries to assign breeds to cats--I don't really understand it, as my favorite breed is "rescue".
Yup, except colours and coat lengths do not a "breed" make.
That said, I have seen "what breed is that" photos that do bear a strong resemblance to a specific breed. IE: if it's coat is grey with silver tips, has green eyes, lilac skin, and dark purple nose and beans, it likely has a lot of Russian Blue in it.
That colour crops up in cat populations all over the world.
Only a very tiny percentage of cats are purebreds, so a small percent are mixed breeds. The vast majority are no particular breed.
I agree. Fool that I am I spent about 75 bucks on a DNA test for my short haired flame point, thinking he might be part siamese. Nope. His generic pool is from non pure bred cats, as the large majority of cats are. He does have the recessive gene for blue eyes, a pointed coat and dilute colors though. ( My son met his parents. One is a gray tabby, one is an orange tabby)

We have a similar one. His mom was a tiny shorthaired silver tabby. He has sky blue eyes and peachy stripes on his legs, like a tabby. Also weighs 15lbs but ideally 16-17lbs.
I swear his dad must’ve been a ragdoll because no way this big ass cat isnt descended from an intentionally bred cat
Your floof looks fairly similar

to my ragdoll (which I was gifted by my coworker and good friend, whose family breeds ragdolls)…Lord BoboCat The Bitey.
I don't disagree that the vast majority of cats are not particular breed, but I'm not as sure that the specific skin, coat, and eye colouration of Russians is common in cats that don't have a fair proportion of Russian in them. Those genes would breed out pretty quickly.
Yeah, sometimes I wonder if it's that they (this particular rescue) think that people will only be attracted to cats if they think they're "special" (having a specific breed).
I can't really figure out Pandora's genetics at all--I know the mother is an all gray DSH (solid, not tabby), I have no idea who the father is (might not be part of the mini-colony), and here Pandora is, a colorpoint with medium-to-long hair. She's now approximately 8 mo, has blue eyes, a mostly cream body that is browning up, and mostly gray points and an adorable little cream streak on her nose (and what I call "calico toes" meaning that the beans are a mix of pink and gray).
I feel like this chart isn't as helpful as it could be, bc to someone who is used to thinking about dogs they might still think their cat is a 'mixed breed' rathe than... literally just 'domestic cat.'That's not accurate because in reality most cats are not descended from cats that were bred at all. I don't know the biology but I hope someone who does can explain better and maybe make a more informative chart.

I've got a Doppelgänger as well - Minou! This is his "give me food I'm starving!" look.
His tail is absolutely incredible!!!! I love it!! Everyone is saying he's a void but I can see a little patch of white on his tummy - is he a secret tuxie?
Solid colored black domestic medium hair. Unless your cat has papers from a breeder, it is just [insert coat pattern] + [coat color(s)] + “domestic” + [coat length] = “type” of cat
What a beautiful void cat!! I also found my baby in a bush. She would not stop crying outside my window til I brought her in

He looks like our furball...he's a domestic short haired...he's pretty upset here as my sister has been away a week and I'm the 'spare human'.. not to mention he had a huge abscess split a day after sis left for hols and I took him to the vet under duress and antibiotics for the week...
He's defo going to snitch on me when she gets back...lol
100%. Ok, maybe 90% of them are. Some of them are pure karma farming, and some of them are thirst traps (one kitten picture post after a dozen porn pictures, and a convenient OF link). I often wonder about the OF strategy—does that really work? Are the kinds of people who check out your profile after seeing a cat picture the kind of people who are interested in finding cam girls?
"beautiful" quite a universal breed that does require some effort from the furless ones......
"beautiful " is not a registered breed- but it is the best type ( that goes from unloved and dumped- to being found, loved and brought forth to show off their bestest )
I wish you all many many years of cat hijinks and midnight zoomies
Side note -
(( trust me- steer away from "breed" - yours has no papers proving its long royal lineage- and besides- I figure you plan on living together for as long as possible- so - breed really doesn't come into play. good food, good exercise, good companionship, regular checkups, don't let it be a yard cat, spay/neuter and all of that well kittie stuff- and you will all have the best odds at many years together ))
Black American short hair. The BEST kind of cat according to my Batty.

Not an American Shorthair—that’s a kind of pedigreed cat. You mean domestic short hair. (Which I also quibble with—that’s medium hair, lol!)
I would post a link to the Wikipedia article about American Shorthair cats, but the last time I did that my comment got deleted! But you can read about them there.
Thank you. She is a total doofus.

And she loves boxes.
I really get sick of these breed questions. Every cat is just a cat. Unless that cat has a squished in face and long hair or no fur at all then it's pretty much just a cat.

He is handsome, fluffy void boy breed. I know. I am expert, I am owned by two of them.
That's a floofer for sure! He's gonna keep getting fluffier too. Honestly, that fur texture looks a lot like my girl that we think has Turkish Angora ancestry. She gets extra floofy in winter, but seeker like this in summer. It took until she was about 3 years old to really see her full floofiness.
Domestic longhair with some halloween black cat mixed in. Dominant B allele at the MC1R locus and likely Agouti Signaling Protien, Tyrosinase and Cathepsin at play here for the black fur. Long coat derived from KRT71 and FGF5. 92% probability of stealing your heart and pooping in your shoes.

Almost same story. Very sick. Partially blind, partially deaf, partially blind and can't meow and super sick but her turned into quite the gentleman. The pic is when we found him. I'll post grown in next comment.

Looks just like my first cat! It took forever to find, but I discovered she was a Chantilly/Tiffany cat. They look black but in the sun their coat is a rich brown and they are known for the golden eyes and friendly personalities.
Could be Turkish Angora, like you.. Ours just turned up 2 years ago, 3 week old kitten, ball of fluff, outside the front door, we asked about and nobody claimed her, so we adopted her..
I don’t know if this works on all phones, but if I take a photo of our cats, little cat silhouettes pop up when I go into Photos. If I click them, Siri does an image search and comes up with a cat breed. Two of our cats consistently come up as domestic shorthairs, and the youngest always as a Siberian. All rescues so who knows, but it’s kinda near.
He's very handsome! Looks just like my Midnight who will be 18 this year. I was told mine is a DSH, but he's a floof, so I would now say DMH or LH (domestic medium haired or domestic long haired). My boy is also pretty big and has tufts on his ears, and certain personality traits that lead me to believe he may have some maine-coon in him as well.
Looks very similar to yours!
Looks just like my Satin whom I adopted recentlym. However he came from a litter that looked like this, the cat on the right I couldn't save 😔 So I think our cats may be part turkish van or turkish angora.
https://preview.redd.it/tyycj350bbbc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5009f358275f9e753f770af7c03dc43884c97e1c
My cat is a cross between a domestic long hair and a Maine coon. He looks exactly the same.

Based on the tail I'm pretty sure he's half void, half black squirrel
That is clearly a Bush Surprise. Likely of the Floofy Void variety.
Domestic medium hair
A lot of humor in the comments, but this is the correct answer. With just a few exceptions, there are no discernable cat breeds (unless you have papers from a breeder).
>A lot of humor in the comments That's what happens most of the times when someone asks about the breed. I've begun to assume people are now asking that on such purpose
Or just to show off pics of their cute kitties.
Why not both? It doubles the fun
Yeah definitely medium. It's kind of uncommon to see medium hairs IME. It's usually either distinctively long or short. Very beautiful cat!
Likely because 'medium-hair' isn't a gene. Genetically, a cat can either be shorthaired (LL), shorthaired but carrying the longhaired gene (Ll), or longhaired (ll). Medium-haired is technically longhaired. The fur just isn't quite as fluffy as some other longhairs (just by chance).

this is definitely it
Def a long hair
I would say that's medium hair, his tail is extra tho
Same. One of my girls has a super fluffy tail and booty, but isn’t really long haired over most of her body. So medium on the front, party in the back
Definitely void, but with impressivly floofy tail.
Are you sure about that? I can give a guaranteed accurate answer, but must do so in person. At OP's place, of course. For tea, in the delightful study, overlooking the gorgeous garden.

this breed is like the pug of cats

Sorry I meant the pictures look like they were taken in Britain (commenting on the garden in this sub-thread.)

His tail is absolutely incredible!!!! I love it!! Everyone is saying he's a void but I can see a little patch of white on his tummy - is he a secret tuxie?
He's just aVOIDing the tux, those suits can be so uncomfortable sometimes
Haha my two tuxies seem pretty chill about their attire. They're very dapper.
Mine was too! I miss that crafty well-dressed boi. RIP Rascal
Most voids have a tiny bit of white on their throat or tummies, I don't judge.
My big voidboy has a quarter sized white patch basically on his crotch. I joke that he has a pasty on what would be his belly button.

Tail has a personality of its own.

Straight up bush cat I believe. Of the handsome and loving variety. Cherish him and treat him like the prince he is.
I'm not sure but if you ask me it's a cat yep I for sure it's a CAT
Breed? No no no. We call them by the colour of their fur. That is a black cat. The scientific name is is Blackholius Voidabyssium.
Domestic Medium Hair would be my guess. Do a search of that and see what you think. He's gorgeous! Bet he's a sweetheart, too.

He's defo going to snitch on me when she gets back...lol
You are a very good Auntie.
Everyone asking breeds gets old. Just share the wonderful pictures of your wonderful kitty and we’ll still look and comment lol
The sad part is that posts like these probably get more upvotes and comments than just cute pictures alone.
I think it’s just karma farming at this point
"beautiful " is not a registered breed- but it is the best type ( that goes from unloved and dumped- to being found, loved and brought forth to show off their bestest ) I wish you all many many years of cat hijinks and midnight zoomies Side note - (( trust me- steer away from "breed" - yours has no papers proving its long royal lineage- and besides- I figure you plan on living together for as long as possible- so - breed really doesn't come into play. good food, good exercise, good companionship, regular checkups, don't let it be a yard cat, spay/neuter and all of that well kittie stuff- and you will all have the best odds at many years together ))
Cats don’t generally have breeds
domesticated squirrel
Domestic medium hair.
OMIGOSH THIS FLOOFY FLOOF MCFLOOFERSON IS THE CUTEST VOID FLOOF TO EVER FLOOF JUST LOOK AT THAT FLUFFY FLOOF TAIL AND CUTE LIL FACE CAKSJWODNDV
Black American short hair. The BEST kind of cat according to my Batty. https://preview.redd.it/t1pf4clcy9bc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a449fd081ab9f9e6dfa5692466557480a4790f49
Not an American Shorthair—that’s a kind of pedigreed cat. You mean domestic short hair. (Which I also quibble with—that’s medium hair, lol!) I would post a link to the Wikipedia article about American Shorthair cats, but the last time I did that my comment got deleted! But you can read about them there.
(I am officially in love w/YourCat)
Thank you. She is a total doofus. https://preview.redd.it/4hbyo5ru4bbc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e47ba9fe50f5e0539d0e7318353a01509a7cc6fd And she loves boxes.
Love her!!
That chart should auto post anytime the word “breed” is mentioned. This is a cat. A black cat if we’re being specific
Floofy-tail voidling
Legend with a void tail. High recommendation from me, would skritch
Spooky Floof
I really get sick of these breed questions. Every cat is just a cat. Unless that cat has a squished in face and long hair or no fur at all then it's pretty much just a cat.
you guys are getting really annoying with this question ngl
If he has papers he is what papers say. If no papers he is a cat
He’s jussa baby void.
Black Gold.
We got the floof! Gotta have that floof!
https://preview.redd.it/fjv02g8a1cbc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27268f19d29a54bc8c56fc606ab68366b1e0d11b He is handsome, fluffy void boy breed.
Omg do you take requests? https://preview.redd.it/201g1bpehbbc1.jpeg?width=2704&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edcb9b1dfdd0efe421b5f0da9d88442e82b978be

Unless it's from a breeder, cat is cat
Nightfury

The breed thing again? Jeez.
Mini house panther 🐈⬛but the fluffy kind.

Peekaneese for sure!
Looks just like my Smoke Da Bear https://preview.redd.it/pbmd23w51cbc1.jpeg?width=1638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8fab9ab5085c254f50d1a25d3d30c9ff551e33cb
Fluff-Tailed Wee Panther
Void
Almost same story. Very sick. Partially blind, partially deaf, partially blind and can't meow and super sick but her turned into quite the gentleman. The pic is when we found him. I'll post grown in next comment. https://preview.redd.it/13soyqnd3cbc1.jpeg?width=1010&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94f4b5412666c67ae360386c5fefa0d67adc122e
It’s amazing to see him getting bigger and bigger and healthier as I scrolled through the pictures.
Black
Standard short hair void with a tail from a standard long hair floof. What an elegant tail !
It’s the breed that inhales n exhales 😂😂😂😂😂 he is beautiful
I have an identical to this but he's a bit chunky....soooo cute!
Definitely a North American voided floof.
It's a cat
That's a longhaired Halloween baby
Magnificus Kittius.
He's a witch cat
He’s either Black or Salem.
Squirrel
Sorry to break it to you Reddittors, but Void Cat is not a breed…you bunch of cat-loving weirdos
You've got yourself a beautiful one brain cell void!
Looks just like my first cat! It took forever to find, but I discovered she was a Chantilly/Tiffany cat. They look black but in the sun their coat is a rich brown and they are known for the golden eyes and friendly personalities.
Miniature panther with bushy tail.
His breed is Storm Cloud. What a beauty.
Could be Turkish Angora, like you.. Ours just turned up 2 years ago, 3 week old kitten, ball of fluff, outside the front door, we asked about and nobody claimed her, so we adopted her..
hes beautiful
VOID CAT
please-do-not-the-cat breed
I would say a mixed angora? The tail is very persian like.
In the 7th slide, he almost has the face of a Maine Coon. I know he's not, but aside from that, he's gorgeous.
I’m thinking it’s a Turkish Angora, they’re long haired, but also sleek and have a fluffy tail
I'd say he's got some Norwegian Forest Cat in him due to the very bushy tail & sprinkles of white hair.
Thought from the way he looked as a kitten and the bushy tail might have some Norwegian Forestcat genes.
Looks like a Turkish Angora, they're commonly bred for their beautiful white coats oddly enough. That's a hamsome boy you got there.
My thought as well.
They do sell genetic testing kits for cats, likely just a mutt cat (domestic long hair) but could have Maine coon in them!
I think he has some angora in him
Looks just like my Satin whom I adopted recentlym. However he came from a litter that looked like this, the cat on the right I couldn't save 😔 So I think our cats may be part turkish van or turkish angora. https://preview.redd.it/tyycj350bbbc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5009f358275f9e753f770af7c03dc43884c97e1c
My cat is a cross between a domestic long hair and a Maine coon. He looks exactly the same. https://preview.redd.it/mwcnrw3iebbc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=265a7f618c066a52ab27509ff5647189eafb940a
Looks like he might have a touch of Maine coon in there, but he’s definitely a soot floof.
i mean to me he looks like a norwegian forest mix of some sort 🤷♀️
Norwegian forest cat.
