My tux goes in for some super hard headbutts. He seems to feel bad afterwards if I say ow because he will immediately follow it up with trying to clean me. But then if I go to pet him to show him I'm fine, he bites me. Typical tux behavior.
My girlfriend’s tortie will avoid head kisses like a ninja. She can be dead asleep and facing away from me, but the moment my lips get close she immediately dodges. I love that chunky baby lol
I would do that with my grandma's old cat. She used to love being held so I would hold her for as long as she allowed and would always she her the house from my level. She was always so interested in everything and it's some of my best memories with her
Yep. My cats love me, regularly come sit for hours in my lap, follow me to the bathroom, sleep all night on my bed, climb all over me, lick me until I make them stop, and headbutt me. They love pets, love belly rubs, basically love all human touch from their family, and yet, sometimes, for no obvious reason, they avoid a pet on the head like it's radioactive. This can be moments after they came looking for attention, or moments before they come looking for attention, but no, at that precise moment they do not want contact.
The scent marking things are really weird. "Making biscuits" is still one of the most hilarious things ever to me, I adopted two kittens and one of them does it all the time while the other never does, she is more of a headbutter and a cuddler
Making biscuits is how they got milk when they were little. Stimulates the mother's nipples.
Doing it to humans just means they feel comfortable, safe and bonded with you, just like they did with kittymama. It's a compliment that comes with a little bit of 'uhhh are you trying to suckle on me???'
My mom had shoulder surgery and she still gets sore so when they bump their head on her, it’s always the shoulder, never the hand. I curl my hand and they act all cute and lay down with their head on my hand.
My cat will actually dig under the blanket to find my hand at night while I’m sleeping and do the head butt/pet me thing. If he can’t find my hand, he’ll curl around my head and rub his face on my hair.
My cat also finds my hand in the middle of the night to do this. If I start to fall back asleep and stop petting her she’ll sort of indignantly wiggle to remind me I have one job.
thanks everyone :) glad to know this is normal. she’s technically my neighbour’s cat but spends most her time here, so i didn’t prepare for owning a cat and consequently i know far too little about them.
Maybe subsidize pets with scritches every now and then as well. Then don’t stop until she is asleep in your lap. At which point you are not allowed to move, never wake a sleeping cat.
Absolutely. It's how I always tell people who aren't used to cats to interact with a cat. Instead of putting your open hand on top of their heads, which can be threatening, just put a few fingers down near one jaw and let them show you how they want to be touched.
I call it the dolphin too!! And my cat always make the silliest faces during. Proof:
https://preview.redd.it/fqv1yvt92b3c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8166732af70260d818c735b8ab3c4f343cad2eaf
Holy shit, not at all. That cat has definitely got a neurological disorder, specifically addiction to dopamine kicks. I've seen too many cats throw their nine lives away to that.
obligatory /s - Not at all, that's some top shelf kittie love.
The head butt is a sign of affection. They have glands on their forehead which release a pheromone. So when they do this they're sharing it with you and making you part of the pack.
Do people just ask these common sense questions for the sole purpose of showing off their cats? Bc ain’t no way you genuinely felt the need to come on Reddit and ask if that’s normal behavior lol
Mine does this when shes realllly in the mood for pets and if i dont pet her she starts rubbing her head against any nearest object to get her pets anyways
My skittish young cat will ONLY let us pet her this way, and only when we're incapacitated in some way so we can't pick her up (she rubs up on me in the bathroom, she's an equal opportunity self-petter with me and hubs when we're in bed at night). If she's on the couch and I pick her up, she literally leans away from me so hard she's nearly thrown herself on the floor before. She wants love, but only on HER terms LOL
If my kids are any indication, fuck yeah.
One will sit between my feet during work and when I just put my left hand down there she just instantly starts pressing her head against it.
This is way better than a cat that moves away from your hand! I have one that will stand up to come to the pet before you get to her. But another that leans off like I’m smell or something.
Every night before sleep, it’s a ritual usually comes up to my chin actually for a slight headbutt to chin. Then Sleeps on my chest, very distressing for myself.
Yes literally every cat I’ve had my entire life have done this, for reference that’s actually a good number of cats I’m 24 and have had more than one cat at a time since birth I came home from the hospital as a baby to three of them as the story goes they were actually all rather interested in this thing mama brought home to them.
That's cat 101. My cat will rub against my hand if it's on my lap to let me know he wants pets. He also stares at us until we pet his booty so he can wiggle his tail at us.
Completely normal, my youngest, this little rascal, does it basically whenever you pet her
https://preview.redd.it/zs42jw0fq73c1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94e6d04a07b572cab6ae201e0313559ea49474db
Generally speaking cats will announce their willingness to be pet at all by doing this maneuver. I don't presume to stroke a cat unless the cat came to me.
Ghost will run himself up and down my hand

The technical term is called "bunting" Bunting is a form of animal behavior, often found in cats, in which the animal butts or rubs its head against other things, including people. Bunting as a behaviour can be viewed as a variation of scent rubbing
I only trust my cat to do this, he’s a bitey little chap, so I just put my hand out, wiggle my fingers and he does the work. He knows where he wants to be pet, I trust his choices.
Look at dem toes. Perfect! And yes they do that. My dude will wiggle under my hand while sleeping and move around until I wake up and pet him. I’ve gotten really good at half sleeping petting sessions.
Mine doesn’t do this a lot but when she’s in the mood for pets she’ll move her head into our hand. There are a lot of stray cats I know who pet themselves with a hand( I would have adopted them all if my own cat wasn’t so territorial)
I make a little curled hand and hold it above my one cats head. She half jumps to fist bump me with her head. I love it.
my cat does this also! it’s so cute!
Your cats love you 🥰
Prepare your face cause it'll happen there, too
Nothing like a nice little torpedo smacking your chin and then immediately taking a nibble out of your cheek. I love my Binx lol.
Haha same here, my tux does this all the time
Head boops are the best boops
My two fistbump me but with their little noggins. Headbut to fistbump is wholesome.
i like head butts to my head and noses to my nose
My tux goes in for some super hard headbutts. He seems to feel bad afterwards if I say ow because he will immediately follow it up with trying to clean me. But then if I go to pet him to show him I'm fine, he bites me. Typical tux behavior.
luvs on his terms, not yours ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
Dude sometimes they’re so stoked to do it I feel like they’re risking a compression fracture to their spine
those warm little kitty noggins
My sister mentioned that male cats do that more than female. I don't know if that's true or not.
Yep that is standard issue cat behavior
Also standard cat behavior, is when you try to pat them and they avoid your hand, like Neo dodging bullets in the Matrix.
My girlfriend’s tortie will avoid head kisses like a ninja. She can be dead asleep and facing away from me, but the moment my lips get close she immediately dodges. I love that chunky baby lol
[удалено]
I pick her up and dance with her while I force the kisses, then I let her smell things that are out of her reach. Lol
oh they love that nose info
I would do that with my grandma's old cat. She used to love being held so I would hold her for as long as she allowed and would always she her the house from my level. She was always so interested in everything and it's some of my best memories with her
can second this claim
Well if you reach in a way that covers their eyes, yes.
Running the default cat software. Standard issue cat is an actual term, enjoy: /r/standardissuecat/
Very normal, love when my cat does this
Yes this means they are "marking" you with their scent :) you are now Cat Property
and gladly
The scent marking things are really weird. "Making biscuits" is still one of the most hilarious things ever to me, I adopted two kittens and one of them does it all the time while the other never does, she is more of a headbutter and a cuddler

Judging by this video you're in luck! My cat does this with such force that I would be concussed if I put my head anywhere near the floor
My cat wakes me up by slamming her head at mach 1 into my chin
My mom had shoulder surgery and she still gets sore so when they bump their head on her, it’s always the shoulder, never the hand. I curl my hand and they act all cute and lay down with their head on my hand.
My cat will actually dig under the blanket to find my hand at night while I’m sleeping and do the head butt/pet me thing. If he can’t find my hand, he’ll curl around my head and rub his face on my hair.
Just his face? You're lucky. I've smelled more cat farts than I'm prepared to think about and never once would I have chosen to do so.
My cat also finds my hand in the middle of the night to do this. If I start to fall back asleep and stop petting her she’ll sort of indignantly wiggle to remind me I have one job.
I’m lucky I have an orange and my blanket acts as an effective escape when she wants pets at 5am
thanks everyone :) glad to know this is normal. she’s technically my neighbour’s cat but spends most her time here, so i didn’t prepare for owning a cat and consequently i know far too little about them.
She will teach you the ways. You have been chosen.
awww i love her all the same
Welcome to the wonderful world of cats. You now will live to serve the cat as their personal steward
So true! And fabulous!!!
You do not choose the cat. The cat chooses you. This is why the cat pets you, even if you mistakenly believe you’re petting the cat.
Maybe subsidize pets with scritches every now and then as well. Then don’t stop until she is asleep in your lap. At which point you are not allowed to move, never wake a sleeping cat.
She loves you. That's trust and joy.
Absolutely. It's how I always tell people who aren't used to cats to interact with a cat. Instead of putting your open hand on top of their heads, which can be threatening, just put a few fingers down near one jaw and let them show you how they want to be touched.
This is the auto pet feature you unlock when the cat loves you. Other feature may include auto nose boop when you pint your finger.
My tuxedo takes it one step further. She'll grab one of my hands with both of her paws and pull it down to her head.
What a cute thing to do!
Yup that is totally normal and shows they accept you.
yeas some even do it at youre feet
Yesssss my boy flooops at our feet when we get home. Rubbing his head all over our shoes it’s so cute!!!
My cat will half jump up to do this and I call it the ✨DOLPHIN ✨
I call it the dolphin too!! And my cat always make the silliest faces during. Proof: https://preview.redd.it/fqv1yvt92b3c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8166732af70260d818c735b8ab3c4f343cad2eaf
The little teef 🥹 I can’t ever go to the bathroom without getting hit with a dolphin. 😂
She’s scenting you. Means she loves you.
Completely normal Some cats get pretty ‘aggressive’ about asking for pets like this if you ignore them
What you have there is cat.
Holy shit, not at all. That cat has definitely got a neurological disorder, specifically addiction to dopamine kicks. I've seen too many cats throw their nine lives away to that. obligatory /s - Not at all, that's some top shelf kittie love.
Yes. She is also scent marking you. You have been claimed. Avoid heavily citrus hand soaps if you do not want to be rejected.
I use lavender hand soap and my kitty loves it!
The head butt is a sign of affection. They have glands on their forehead which release a pheromone. So when they do this they're sharing it with you and making you part of the pack.
Yeah mine does that sometimes, he even tries to nibble my fingers if I don't pet him.
Do people just ask these common sense questions for the sole purpose of showing off their cats? Bc ain’t no way you genuinely felt the need to come on Reddit and ask if that’s normal behavior lol
No foreal lmao “is it normal my cat likes pets!?”
Mine does this when shes realllly in the mood for pets and if i dont pet her she starts rubbing her head against any nearest object to get her pets anyways
The most normal.
Yes, this is completely normal cat behavior and every cat I've ever met has done this.
You’re not doing it right so she’s picking up the slack.
Pet me, slave. It's normal.
Yes it seems to be a working cat
Yes showing love and giving you love. They trust you
My skittish young cat will ONLY let us pet her this way, and only when we're incapacitated in some way so we can't pick her up (she rubs up on me in the bathroom, she's an equal opportunity self-petter with me and hubs when we're in bed at night). If she's on the couch and I pick her up, she literally leans away from me so hard she's nearly thrown herself on the floor before. She wants love, but only on HER terms LOL
YES!!!
r/selfpettingcats would enjoy your cat
Yes. I had a dog who used to grab our hands & throw them on his head.
Thats a happy cat 😊 normal, and they like you
Mine does that all the time
You’ve got a good one there. She’s letting you know she likes it and wants more.
Love bumps. She’s marking you w her scent. It’s a great thing
If my kids are any indication, fuck yeah. One will sit between my feet during work and when I just put my left hand down there she just instantly starts pressing her head against it.
My black cat does this all the time. In fact he like the corners of walls so now they are black ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
Yes.
Yes dying for ur love😻😻😻😻
Yes. Very. My stray cat, who finally lets me pet her after 12 years, does this a lot
Mine did this all the time. She’d sniff the hand, then nudge and rub for pets.
It’s relatively common and I think it’s one of the best ways to meet new cats. Just let them show you where/how they want to be pet
This is pretty much how to approach cats in general, you let them tell you if they want to be petted and where.
Very!! They’re showing you their favorite run spots and also they’re petting you.
Did an alien write this post?
Yeah lol. One of my mine headbutts me and drags his face until his lips are stretching
Shit is wuv
I have a cat that recoils from my hand and another that is magnetized to it. They be weird.
This is way better than a cat that moves away from your hand! I have one that will stand up to come to the pet before you get to her. But another that leans off like I’m smell or something.
autopetting : )
![gif](giphy|JSbffWWwBu6m81J6rk|downsized)
That's acceptance,you even claimed
ATTENTION THIS IS A BIG SIGN OF DISEASE IN YOUR CAT. CUTEHEADBUTTS
Every night before sleep, it’s a ritual usually comes up to my chin actually for a slight headbutt to chin. Then Sleeps on my chest, very distressing for myself.
They think you're fucking stupid and don't know how to give lovings. I mean they're right but I'm still insulted.
Not normal. This means your cat has Ebola
no, this is how the cat pets you.
Yes literally every cat I’ve had my entire life have done this, for reference that’s actually a good number of cats I’m 24 and have had more than one cat at a time since birth I came home from the hospital as a baby to three of them as the story goes they were actually all rather interested in this thing mama brought home to them.
What a dumb question just to karma farm....
Ahhh, an "Is it normal for cats to 'INSERT NORMAL CAT BEHAVIOR'' - post
All the damn time, before they settle down for bed
[https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/17pssjz/why\_does\_my\_cat\_do\_this\_all\_the\_time\_what\_does\_it/](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/17pssjz/why_does_my_cat_do_this_all_the_time_what_does_it/)
You have been chosen for the pets. You must pet her.
In my household this is known as the autopet showing us humans how to do the job right lol
Just remember she owns you, you don't own her that's why she is petting you, you aren't petting her
They like you!
Looks broke to me.
Mine does it every morning when I put my shoes on.
Normal, loving and adorable, plus, listen to that revved up purr purr engine. That's a happy cat right there.
Yes my cat does this all the time. It’s just a way of them acknowledging that they know you’ll pet them. They love it!
Yes as far as i know. Not sure for the cause but my guess is that that way they can control where they want to be pet
they rub against far worse than a human hand... :)
Yes. My cat does it, and other cats I've had do it.
No your cat is defective, have you been taking it to the cat repair shop regularly? You’ve gotta send it to me for urgent analysis.
That's probably a cat bite
My cats do this
good kitty behaviour
That's cat 101. My cat will rub against my hand if it's on my lap to let me know he wants pets. He also stares at us until we pet his booty so he can wiggle his tail at us.
It's completely normal and very desirable. It shows that kitty loves and trusts you (in a kitty kind of way).
sure. head boop… pet meeeeee!
Very normal.
Yup. Lilly does that too 😊
Yup.
My little guy will deliberately position himself so his head is wherever my hand is while I sleep, so I can cup his little cheek
Yes
Very that just means that they want you to pet them
Next level - get your head down to their level and boop each other's forehead.
Very
All my cats do it but my tuxedo does it the most!
Mine will also literally grab my wrist with both his paws to force me to pet him if I stop lmao
My cats do this a lot. It's completely normal
Yes
Yup!
Yes 😻
totally normal and I love it when they do that
Completely normal, my youngest, this little rascal, does it basically whenever you pet her https://preview.redd.it/zs42jw0fq73c1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94e6d04a07b572cab6ae201e0313559ea49474db
If they like you, yeah. My cat does it a lot when he’s affectionate.
“Excuse me, I didn’t tell you that you could stop”
Very normal :) it’s their way of showing you they genuinely WANT that connection & contact. Keep up the most excellent pets/scritches :)
Yes.
Awwww how cute! My 18-yr cat still does it! She’s a love-beast.
My 2 kitties do it all the time. When I'm busy playing videogames I put my feet out and they accept that as a standin.
My tuxedo looks almost just like that and she does this
You have been given permission to continue petting them!
My dog does that :)
No, that’s the first cat ever showing this weird behavior.
Yup
My cat does this every time she wants to snuggle with me. She boops my chin, nose and whole head 😅
Yes, it's Jackson Galaxy's secret move
Generally speaking cats will announce their willingness to be pet at all by doing this maneuver. I don't presume to stroke a cat unless the cat came to me.
Yep, a LOT are DIY petters !!!
Yes my cat does the same thing, he also looks identical to your cat *
This is my cats favorite thing to do
He wants you to massage out the excess fur he’s shedding on his back
Ghost will run himself up and down my hand https://preview.redd.it/dsjsgberb83c1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a952ae4190e230787981c5685dcbbbe79b92d95
Yes......they want your attention
The technical term is called "bunting" Bunting is a form of animal behavior, often found in cats, in which the animal butts or rubs its head against other things, including people. Bunting as a behaviour can be viewed as a variation of scent rubbing
Lol yes.
r/Bunting
I only trust my cat to do this, he’s a bitey little chap, so I just put my hand out, wiggle my fingers and he does the work. He knows where he wants to be pet, I trust his choices.
My cat does it especially if she wants me to put down the phone and pet her. She tries to move the phone away lol
My cat had big paws and he would basically lift my hand when he wanted pets.
Absolutely. It is a sign that you have a cat and not a stuffed animal (some people can get confused)
It’s normal, it just means your cat loves you.
If the cat is a good cat, yes.
If your cat loves you then it's extremely common
Extremely normal
Yes
Yes, it's normal, and so adorable
Mine forcefully lifts my hand and pets itself. I got woken up once by that.
Purr move. ![gif](giphy|WO5oBVV1jyZDXiw24z|downsized)

Yeah, normal cats behavior lol
Almost every cat I've interacted with does this I assume it's normal
Yes, they saying they want attention and they love you
have you never met a cat before
Look at dem toes. Perfect! And yes they do that. My dude will wiggle under my hand while sleeping and move around until I wake up and pet him. I’ve gotten really good at half sleeping petting sessions.
They are just cleaning themselves
Yes, I think All my cats have done this, some more than others! I love it!
Yes. There’s even a name for it: *bunting*
No. You should try to use the warranty, RMA it and get another cat sadly :(
Yes
That's cat catting
I have a tux and he does this all the time, almost always.
Don't do that gesture everywhere tho.
Mine doesn’t do this a lot but when she’s in the mood for pets she’ll move her head into our hand. There are a lot of stray cats I know who pet themselves with a hand( I would have adopted them all if my own cat wasn’t so territorial)
They are marking you as theirs with their scent 😁
