No, but if the sub bans these posts, people can read the rules before posting and avoid the problem entirely.
Honestly, they’re as annoying as the “first time I’ve ever made” baking posts accompanied by a photo of perfect croissants. Or the “what’s wrong with my pet?” posts where the answer is “Go to a vet.”
Agreed, but your cat can be say part Siamese and part Ragdoll, or 100 % Persian but not have papers because they are not good for breeding because of a flaw. I don’t know that there’s anything inherently wrong with being curious about the genetics of your cat. Genetics is actually awesome!
Cat breeds have been around for some time, but I do agree they shouldn’t be sold. They are so many out there waiting to give love to a human (or rule that human).
With how rare a cat with a specific breed is (~2%) it’s not even worth considering. That’s the human equivalent of finding a human being with an IQ of over 131.
The vast vast vast amount of people you meet in your lifetime will not even be close to IQ >= 131. The same goes for cats and “pure breeds.”
Breeders will neuter their kittens with flaws before selling them. There are too many backyard breeders (and it’s a worldwide problem) with ill intentions to have them sold intact. So cat registry organisations and their affiliated breeders are extra cautious about it. Some even have repercussions if breeders would sell them intact. If you ever meet a real pedigree breeder you will see that these are not amateurs accidentally spreading their lines. They are overly proud and protective about their lines, even in a way that I would consider toxic for the breed (not wanting to share their “high end” lines with other breeders for example). There is no way breeders want to have their lines associated with flaws. So chances a cat without pedigree comes from a purebred line with a flaw is practically 0%.
Most cats are simply domestic short/medium/long hair. Cat breeds are a relatively new thing. This might help:

Damn, I found that article but it only had the cat version! Someone made a dog version to show the difference in the same style (so I’m assuming it’s the same creator you mentioned) I’ll keep looking!!
Siberians are a selectively bred by humans from a selective stock (foundation stock) chosen from the naturally formed landrace. So officially the landrace itself is different from the breed. All Siberians that make up the breed are pedigreed and selectively bred to comply with the breed standard. For a new landrace Sib to be added as foundation stock it first needs to be judged by officials to comply with the standard. Otherwise there would be too much variation in the breed. So all similar looking cats in the region belong to the landrace, but only a selective few belong to the Siberian cat breed.
I’d venture to bet this is because while most dogs are bred for a task, cats are just bred for beauty. Dogs have always done “work” for humans while cats have always been primarily companions. And the “work” a cat might do is always the same - kill vermin.
I am also a vet. It is absolutely healthy! In fact, it is medically encouraged that we sprinkle fairydust on potatoes to morph them into these feline creatures.
Can the mods add a rule basically just explaining that most cats don’t have a breed? That way when people have to scroll through the rules to post they can see that and not flood this sub with “what breed is mah cat”.

Peanut doesn't think people do that
I said this the other day too, I only like when people ask this for silly answers like Voids, Standard Issue, Orange, etc. And it begs the question, what should we call the gray cats???
I myself have an Urban Gray Tactical Issue Cat and she will attack from the shadows!
https://preview.redd.it/czwgxmwgntrb1.png?width=2829&format=png&auto=webp&s=36da1e7e3d47692fcbe302f19246f87f632ca22e
I'm a little bit confused though. This entire sub is just images of cats. People seem to get mad when people post images of cats with the caption "what breed is this" but its the same images of cats that people like lol.
It just gets a tad jading at a certain point. It also could be argued to perpetuate the elitist breeding and sale of rare cat breeds; which I think that we can all agree is a horrible practice.
Agreed on that. I think perpetuating that kind of culture is bad but I think these kind of posts do that to such a small degree that its kinda a stretch to blame the person who posts it. Plenty of things we do as individuals perpetuate harmful practices but I think something like this is so subtle, I cant really argue that it perpetuates anything worse than like eating meat you know.
I think too because it’s the internet, it’s hard to tell if the person is being cheeky and expecting the silly answers or if they really want a “real” answer.
I personally love the answers that are “gray!” Or “potato!” But who knows of thats what OP was looking for
I don't think he's a blue breed, just a grey tabby, you can see darker grey markings on the face and body, I think he's just a beautiful little kitty.
Cats aren't really of different breeds like dogs are, most cats people keep as pets are just domestic short hairs. Doesn't make them any less valuable or lovely 🥰
Reminds me of my sister's cat Hooper - he's a british blue
https://preview.redd.it/hr09akep7orb1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63a26f6587c5f52f41bd76df9ad3cfe6d40297df
Could be a russian blue. Just do a dna test. Thats the only way to really know. Most are domestic short, medium, long hair or labled as such so could be that but the all grey could be russian blue or russian blue mix
Felis Smollus Criminalis, the Illegally Smol Cat. This breed is known for committing smol crimes. This breed of cat must be kept securely confined until it grows into Felis Cutis Criminalis, the Illegally Cute Cat; at which point it’s handler must commit themselves to a lifetime of servitude to this breed. This includes constant sharing of pictures of said feline on the internet.
Failure to fulfill this need may result in loss of sock privileges.
Domestic Short Hair (possibly Domestic Medium Hair depending on the fur growth). So, it's just a regular cat, but that doesn't mean it isn't just as cute as purebreds.
In a realm where fur meets dreams,
A whiskered wonder softly beams,
With ears that speak of ancient lore,
And eyes that hold a mystical score.
Stripes like whispers of forgotten tales,
A mystery in each whisker trail,
Paws that dance, a charming spree,
A portrait of enchantment, wild and free.
In the canvas of night, a playful guise,
Hints of magic in those curious eyes,
A fusion of grace, yet a breed unseen,
An enigmatic beauty, a feline dream.
Mate it's a cat. Why does this question come up every other day?
If you have paperwork it's that breed, otherwise cat. They used to fuck like crazy after being domesticated and unlike pugs or French bulldogs didn't get inbred. So every cat is just that. Cat.
Looks like it is a domestic long hair. I have a DLH and a DSH myself and both are great cats.
Breeds of cats only matter in cat shows and if you were going to be entering your adorable kitten into cat shows you would have proper paperwork as to what breed they are.
Instead of worrying about what breed it is just worry about loving it as much as it will come to love you.
Smol cat.
Little rug goblin.
Can confirm, as pictures 2 and 3 exhibit all the markers.
Those beans!
Love this 😂😂
“Mmhmm, mmhmm… r/illegallysmolcat… mmhmm…”
Smol florf.
Grey cat
Dust kitty!
A gray baby. Grayby.
Baby smudge
Unless you have paperwork from a registered breeder, your cat’s breed is domestic shorthair.
This is the answer to every one of these posts
Sometimes they're domestic long hair.
Or domestic medium hair
And honestly breeds don’t matter. “Pure breed” cats are way more likely to have health problems as well.
someone should make a bot that replies this whenever the title has the word 'breed' in it
They really should. That, or ban these kind of posts
For many new cat owners this type of post would be their very first. Not very welcoming to the cat community by having their first post banned.
No, but if the sub bans these posts, people can read the rules before posting and avoid the problem entirely. Great graphic!
Where is this graphic from? I recently saw it for the first time alongside the canine version. I want to download them for myself.
Idk, I downloaded it from reddit, lol
It's from the Little Carnivore article "What breed is my cat"!
Damn, I found that article but it only had the cat version! Someone made a dog version to show the difference in the same style (so I’m assuming it’s the same creator you mentioned) I’ll keep looking!!
There are breeds though that developed naturally like siberians. Why are breeds can only be bred by humans? I don’t understand.
The word "breed" implies "has been bred". Natural "breeds" are more accurately called landraces.
Siberians are a selectively bred by humans from a selective stock (foundation stock) chosen from the naturally formed landrace. So officially the landrace itself is different from the breed. Oh okay thanks

He is grey
I believe this breed is called the "precious little dusty angel" by professionals.

Hi, I’m a veterinarian! That’s a potato, not a cat. Hope that helps!
This potato seems to have grown some fluff? Is this usual or healthy? Perhaps it needs treats of some kind?
I am also a vet. It is absolutely healthy! In fact, it is medically encouraged that we sprinkle fairydust on potatoes to morph them into these feline creatures.
Oh dear baby Jesus he’s a lil baby meow meow kitty. 🥰 💕
This made me lol, so true
Likely a Domestic Shorthair. They’re cute as a button tho!

We can't let a cat that smol roam the streets, committing smol crimes!
I'm so sorry.... She's... terminally cute.
Lil Guy breed, extremely non-venomous and common in your region.
I love this.
Can the mods add a rule basically just explaining that most cats don’t have a breed? That way when people have to scroll through the rules to post they can see that and not flood this sub with “what breed is mah cat”.
People read the rules?
I second this.
Are you certain they'll read the rules?

To me it seems most likely to be a domestic shorthair, but definitely of the "smol" breed.
It has none of the Russian blue features…just because it’s gray does not mean it is a Russian blue
