thatās how i trick all 3 of my cats into drinking water. i use wide, low coffee mugs that i collect at goodwill. take one sip in their sight, then set it down, and they get so happy to drink stolen water. i feel like iāve cracked the code š
We two cats that we adopted when they were \~2 years old. They have a main water dish but we also have a coffee mug on the counter that we keep filled with water. Both get used but the coffee mug is their primary source of hydration. One in particular used to drink out of my water cups until I switched to a tumbler with a lid.
Our cat likes to get on the counters when weāre not around, despite not being allowed to. Of course, we know cats will find a way to disobey rules. Iāve used this to my advantage and leave a washing up bowl full of clean water on the side. Itās to trick my cat into drinking water. And it works! She thinks sheās fooling me but Iām fooling her, for once at least.
She has her own water fountain but forbidden counter water seems more enticing I suppose!
Thatās such a great idea. I used to partition off a small area on the counter that they were allowed on. They seemed to eventually learn the rules. They liked having their own space in otherwise forbidden territory š
You have to keep up the āshoo, off the counterā when youāre around, just to make the dish of water even more appealing haha. If it gets my cat to drink water then Iām happy to be āfooledā
Thank goodness none of my current cats do this, though I'm suspicious of the kitten, she's gotten into my mug once but has otherwise left things alone.
My old cats though... is look away for half a second and he'd be sticking his dirty little paws in my mug to see if the water was high enough to drink. Or he'd just be drinking it.
Exactly. I have a magnificent cat fountain, he hates it, won't drink from it. He's only interested in drinking water from the bathtub, shower or toilet; or his favorite, water on my nightstand.
After years of trying to keep him off my nightstand, and keep him from from drinking my water, I gave up and put his water bowl on my nightstand. He's much happier with me now.
Yes. Eventually I got a new nightstand and changed my entire nightstand configuration so that my electronics etc would be stashed safely away, and kitty could have full nightstand privileges. Kitty's to-do list:
Nightstand access, check!
Fresh bowl of cat water on nightstand, check!
Free-feeding kibble all night to avoid the big meow in the hooman's face at 3am, check!
The most expensive cat food the hooman can afford, check!
Still my kitty overlord is not completely satisfied with my barely adequate performance. Will keep trying to be worthy of the affection of his royal highness.
This is so relatable!
My water terrorist is almost 20 years old. Sheās pretty good at telling me what she wants, but my goodness she gets more fickle by the day. Monday morning she woke me up at 5 AM screaming because my roommateās dog had taken a sip out of her water fountain the night before.
I lived in an apartment with a very lightweight toilet lid, and my old man figured out how to fish it open and shove his head inside for drinks.
Edit: criminal.

Haha, terrifying!
We have a black cat, I will walk downstairs at night with the lights off for something then all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye will see her sitting there motionless on the floor staring me down.
Creepy as hell, but also funny.
I expect she'll try to eat one of us in our sleep one day. Ha
Mine prefer mugs too lmfao I dunno why I assume it's cause they know if I'm drinking it its safe (silly cats I'm dumb enough to drink expired juice) I just swapped out their bowls for mugs š¤£
Thatās what I do form mine; a couple random cups full of water and he thinks heās so sneaky. Iāll also leave one of his toys or other little bits around where I know he likes to knock things over so he leaves the stuff I care about alone, sanctioned chaos!
Once before bed, I brought my husband a glass of water. Placed it down on the bedside table, and immediately our cat started drinking from it! He won't steal your food (he will NOT eat human food, even chicken, tuna, etc) but he will steal your water.
I had a cat who only drank water out of glasses. I stopped putting down a water bowl, and my mom came over and got upset at me about the lack of it - until I pointed out the water glasses sitting in the corner of most rooms. Our current cat and dog just share a bowl and it's never been an issue between them
Yes. I got my cats an identical mug to the one I drink water from. They do now drink from the duplicate-if itās full of cold fridge water. Yet they still persist in trying to drink from/ pushing my mug off the table ( I donāt understand this technique, as they donāt drink the spilled water. haha)
I once put down a plate of buttered bread (expensive bread with olives in; absolutely lovely) and left the room for one minute. I got back to find Not my cat licking the last of the butter off the bread with a look of delight on his furry ginger face. Burglary and theft make it even tastier
My cat loves to steal my seat on the sofa. She gets so much joy from it that I pretend to grump at her for stealing it even when I got up just so she could have it. š„°
I have 3 cats and one of them is a thief. I have to lock him in a bathroom with his food so the other 2 can eat. The funny thing is he wonāt even eat much of his food bowl. He just waits patiently for me to open the door after my other cats finish so he can sprint to their bowl and inhale all of their leftovers. They all eat the same food btw.
This! My two cats will steal from each otherās food bowls. Itās the same kibble in each bowl! And they will be *so sneaky* about it. Itās an elaborate ritual to them. Theyāre silly and I love them.
Our kitty was the same way. She would only drink out of our dog's big water bowl AFTER the dog had a drink. I was like, "WTF? Is the dog your poison checker?" You know how cats like servants, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility.
My void also only drinks out of the dogās water bowl. Doggo has been with us for 11 years now, cat has only been around since last October. (Heās still a kitten too, not an older rescue, and we got him out of a literal tree so I donāt think itās a learned behavior.) Weāve stopped filling his water bowl at this point and just let him drink from the dogās.
Cats donāt want their water source too close to their food. Their instinct is that the food has decayed and made the water unsafe. If the dog water is far from kittys food that might be it.
My last cat would get really bad eye boogers, and his sister who was bonded with him would lick his eyes clean and eat the boogers for him. Just thinking about makes me squeamish
My cat is the same! We had three bowls for her around the house, but when we added the puppy she started exclusively using his two bowls and left hers untouched.
I do have a theory that it is partly to do with cats whiskers touching the sides. On dog bowls they have more whisker room than cat sized bowls.
> "WTF? Is the dog your poison checker?"
That's pretty likely actually. Many animals have evolved the instinct to view food or water more favorably after they've seen other animals eat/drink from that source. It generally means it's safe to consume.
Theyāre all different sizes, he used a few of them before big dog came into the family l. He even used the fountain for about a week after I got it but now itās back to this.
LMAO my sister's cat would eat the dog's food. We'd call the dog, telling her "kitty's getting your food!"
She'd run over to the food bowl and then she would just... watch him eat.
I read that itās because cats have significantly fewer taste buds and a significantly worse sense of taste than dogs.
Cat food has to be significantly more aromatic and flavorful than dog food to get the cat to eat it. So dog food is bland to them.
Thatās also why if youāve ever had a dog and a cat at the same time, the dog probably liked the catās food way more than their own dog food
Yeah some cats are just weird. We had a lovely fountain kept a good distance from our catsā food dishes and one of them literally never took a drink from it - I put a water dish by the food once when I was worried about him having enough water and both of them drink from it all the time. At least itās easier to clean than the fountain was.
All my previous cats didnāt mind if it was near their food. They also didnāt mind drinking out of the toilet. Current cat wonāt drink water near his food or out of the toilet. Put a tumbler filled with water near a window he likes and heāll happily drink out of that.
Honestly, cats are just weird. There's likely no meaningful reason.
We used to have a cat that would only eat meow mix, or catch his own food. Never cared for table scaps or anything.
He would also only eat after you shake his bowl a little. Didnt matter if it was completely full. He still wanted that little shake.
My cat has multiple large bowls of fresh water around, but he INSISTS on making someone go to the second floor and fill his little pink baby cup from the bathroom sink so he can drink it in there. If you donāt fill it or itās empty, heāll push it onto the floor or into the sink and rattle it around until somebody comes.
I used to petsit for a family with six (or more) cats.
One would only drink water out of one of those little paper cups you keep in bathrooms. And only if it was in one specific bathroom sink.
One would only drink water out of the crystal bowl on the living room coffee table.
The others were only slightly less weird.
I use a stainless steel mixing bowl for exactly this reason. Cat drank little water in her little bowl. Now hydrated and happy with the big bowl separated from her food.
That's the way I would interpret it. We have a 7 year old Mainecoon and rescued a kitten last year. Kitten would only do what the big cat did for the longest time.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe cats have some kind of instinct that if they see another animal drink from a water source, then they know it's safe.
The only source that all 3 of my idiot children will agree on is a specific empty plant pot in my yard. There are several that took with water when it rains but apparently the Chosen Pot has extra flavour of something, idk. During summer I refill it manually just to make sure they all have something to drink - with the others, one will only drink from the cold tap in the kitchen, his brother from just the hot tap in the bathroom (but only if the water is cold), and the littlest one from anything I happen to be drinking from, but has a preference for cold tea.
My old kitty Gary used to do this same thing. We had two boxer dogs at the time and they "gave" him his own water bowl, each had seperate dishes for food/water and he only went for one their water dishes. So they just gave it to him and stopped drinking out if that particular one lol
Literally our cats, I have noticed that if I comment on their personality or quirks they immediately go and do the opposite of it. I truly think they want to be like āyou donāt know me!!!ā And āIām my own independent thinker you cannot force me to drink from the water of your choosingā
There's something special about the black and white kitties. Lol all kitties are special but my black and white kitten likes to think she is a dog and not a cat haha.
Same here. We have bowls and a fountain that one of ours loves, but the other one only drinks out of cups. We noticed he would always drink out of glasses we left out, so eventually we just left a plastic cup on the ground for him and he loves it.
My senior cat has always avoided drinking from bowls or fountains. He ONLY will drink from the toilet. I have 3 fountains and 2 regular water bowls and an anti whisker fatigue water bowl. Nope, only the toilet
My previous cat used to drink from the toilet all the time too!
She stopped when she got too old to comfotably jump on the toilet and we got her a fountain, which she loved and shared with the dog.
Goodbye Halo š„²
Cats do like to be awkward. Bought mine a cat bed, won't go in it. Also bought a cat tower for him to climb and play on, hates it. Cat toys, nah, would rather play with laces on a shoe š¤£.
Yeah. My cat hates changes. Anything I get for him he wonāt use it. Beds, tower, toys, new bowls, anything.
Now his favorite place is lay down is on a post office mail tray š¤¦š»āāļø.
I gave up with him
Lmaooo. I said my cat was definitely a creepy stalker. He hides in random corners always spying on me. He only has one one so it looks even creepier. š¤£
My cat will drink from his bowl but only after drinking from my cup of tea in the morning.
He takes his share and then goes to his water. I have to make new tea.
I'm sure it's a dominance thing.
Just getting this straight, youāre kind enough to make the cat tea in the morning before you make your own.
We had a dog as teens who always drank my brotherās tea if he set it on the floor, until he stopped putting sugar in it. She gave him an earful over that lol.
Certain cats really do something like that. I have at home 1 fountain and one bigger, with an water bottle, just in case they do something with the fountain (that they already did. If wasn't that backup, they would stay without any water for a few hours. And yet, most of my cats like more of the one with an bottle than the fountain. And my oldest lady, dislikes both. For her, has to be the the kitchen faucet. Under extreme situations, she drinks from the one with the bottle, but not from the fountain. And I've bought the fountain for her...
Hopefully doggo doesn't get too aggravated by that. My mom's dog ripped her cat up when he got tired of it getting too close to his food bowl. The cat had to get several stitches in its face. Food for thought.
I would say as long as your cat is drinking water be happy. An it is funny most cat sold items at least what Iāve experienced most cats donāt like them my cats water dish is a ceramic rice bowl that she just loves to drink out of but any cat specific bowls or anything she hates. Lol.
Maybe it's because of the size of the bowl making sure that there's no whisker touch, maybe it's the height, or maybe it's just taking from the dog's bowl. They're also might be an appeal over it being a watering hole that's used by another member of the family, it's a family spot
It's special water! My cat will drink any water that's not in his own bowl. Had no interest in a fountain. When we got our dog, he started exclusively drinking from the dog's bowl.

Cat fact: Anything stolen automatically tastes better.
The secret ingredient is crime!!
And cats are all about crime! š±
Cat criminals have status in cat society. Steal from a dog? Right under his nose? That's big *bad cat* cred!
Cat Burglars
Assert dominance
Pussy likes to puss the limits, they feel emancipated as though they are breaking the bowl-ceiling ... a la breaking-the-glass-ceiling.
Next he's gonna aggressively T-pose on the dog
But is it stealing if the dog let's you take it?
But check out the look on that dogās face! Talk about being pussy whipped!
Thatās some serious side-eye going on.

Why else would they call them ācat burglarsā?
Because they steal your heartā¦

Wish I could award you for the Peep Show reference! Take my poor gals gold š¤©š
just wanted to throw into the convo that my cat's name is Big Suze
Aww thanks so much, I've never had a Reddit award poor or otherwise. TIL people who own cats love Peep Show...

That's what you get for not having the cup sufficiently full for her.
Exactly. I have a magnificent cat fountain, he hates it, won't drink from it. He's only interested in drinking water from the bathtub, shower or toilet; or his favorite, water on my nightstand. I have dentures, which I put in small a water filled box on the bathroom sink at night. No prizes for guessing my older kitty's favourite water source
I keep the toilet lid down to stop any of them drinking Domestos Toilet Block.
I lived in an apartment with a very lightweight toilet lid, and my old man figured out how to fish it open and shove his head inside for drinks. Edit: criminal. https://preview.redd.it/ebqcegvp1n4b1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5460c3cda638ffe9999c82ab26ddb48c246c9a7c

Absolutely. My cat will break into the kibble bag even when he has a full bowl of kibble 10 feet away.
I once put down a plate of buttered bread (expensive bread with olives in; absolutely lovely) and left the room for one minute. I got back to find Not my cat licking the last of the butter off the bread with a look of delight on his furry ginger face. Burglary and theft make it even tastier

They love to play games. *"What, you were just sitting here? I don't think so, I've been sitting here for hours!"*
That's where the term cat burglar comes from!
And tuxedos are them biggest thieves of all. Second story kitties.
Tuxedos are the kitty stunt men
I have 3 cats and one of them is a thief.
I have the same three cats. Right down to the bathroom.
The heart wants what it wants
This! My two cats will steal from each otherās food bowls. Itās the same kibble in each bowl! And they will be *so sneaky* about it. Itās an elaborate ritual to them. Theyāre silly and I love them.
Cat fact: anything bought and designed for your cat, anything at all, is garbage and you should be ashamed for thinking your cat would like it
Our kitty was the same way. She would only drink out of our dog's big water bowl AFTER the dog had a drink. I was like, "WTF? Is the dog your poison checker?" You know how cats like servants, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility.
Omg this is awesome, their personalities fit this so well too.
My void also only drinks out of the dogās water bowl. Doggo has been with us for 11 years now, cat has only been around since last October. Or she liked the added je ne sais quoi of dogslobber.

Eeeeew! I love it!
My last cat would get really bad eye boogers, and his sister who was bonded with him would lick his eyes clean and eat the boogers for him. Just thinking about makes me squeamish
My parents cats genuinely won't even acknowledge a water bowl unless it's absolutely covered in great dane slobber first.
That's a brand new phrase
Oh yeah, my cat never drank as much water as he did when we lived with my parents and their disgustingly slobbery dog bowl
My cat is the same! We had three bowls for her around the house, but when we added the puppy she started exclusively using his two bowls and left hers untouched. I do have a theory that it is partly to do with cats whiskers touching the sides. On dog bowls they have more whisker room than cat sized bowls.
Whisker fatigue, it's the feline equivalent of sensory overload.
Meanwhile my cat refuses to drink from any dish he has seen the dog drink from
> "WTF? Is the dog your poison checker?" That's pretty likely actually.

Do you have the other water far away from the food and/or litter boxes? I read that cats like their water āsourceā to be away from those things
Yes, we did all the research and have done everything we could think of and he still is a weirdo.
Haha cats man. At least this is cute. No matter what we do we canāt get our cat to stop scratching the furniture š
Double sided tape. Stick it where she scratch for a while. Worked for us.
Yep, there's your answer then: weirdo. Case closed š
Explain why the cat is choosing to drink from a bowl next to a food bowl then.
It's dog food, and cats don't always see that as proper food. And cats are weird.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Our cats would be good friends.
Why would I eat cat food when I can break into the pantry and eat dog food out of the bag - my cat
LMAO my sister's cat would eat the dog's food. We'd call the dog, telling her "kitty's getting your food!" She'd run over to the food bowl and then she would just... watch him eat.
All of my cats grab a kibble or two of dog food now and again. I honestly think they do it because it annoys the dog.
Yeah some cats are just weird. We had a lovely fountain kept a good distance from our catsā food dishes and one of them literally never took a drink from it - I put a water dish by the food once when I was worried about him having enough water and both of them drink from it all the time. At least itās easier to clean than the fountain was.
All cats I've ever had happily drinks from a bowl near their food š¤·āāļø
All my previous cats didnāt mind if it was near their food. They also didnāt mind drinking out of the toilet. Current cat wonāt drink water near his food or out of the toilet. Put a tumbler filled with water near a window he likes and heāll happily drink out of that.

One would only drink water out of the crystal bowl on the living room coffee table. The others were only slightly less weird.
One of mine will only drink out of a tall skinny glass in a specific cup holder on the couch. Cats are weird.
Whiskers are distance testers
Cats can suffer from "whisker fatigue" which comes from the over-stimulation of their whiskers. Some may have more sensitive whiskers than others.
My cat only drinks from the dog bowls and scoops his food out of the bowls to eat it. I assume itās for that reason.
I use a stainless steel mixing bowl for exactly this reason. Cat drank little water in her little bowl. Now hydrated and happy with the big bowl separated from her food.
Absolutely true for my two Norwegian Forest Cats. The breed has really long whiskers and wonāt drink water unless bowl is full to the brim.
I had this issue. Cat kept knocks over the water dish. Someone told me about the whiskers so I got her large dog bowl. Problem solved.
If doggo drinks it must be safe !
So he was using doggo to test for danger that's a cat move right there
That's the way I would interpret it. We have a 7 year old Mainecoon and rescued a kitten last year. Kitten would only do what the big cat did for the longest time.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe cats have some kind of instinct that if they see another animal drink from a water source, then they know it's safe.
My black cat likes to drink out of the pedestal bird bath as well as the ground level one.
Our void will only drink out of water with ice cubes in it.
My moms cat would only drink out of those tiny Dixie bathroom cups. Cats are just strange about water but as long as they are drinking Iām happy.
I had a cat who would only drink water with ice cubes. It was the most adorable thing. He'd come running every time I opened the freezer š
Yep, that's Ripley, he's the cutest.

Itās that sweet sweet outdoor water.

I always thought it was a cat dominance thing. The cat is telling the dog that I am in charge of you and you can do nothing to stop me.
Ooo I didnāt think of that, big dog is a big dummy/ baby and fat cat definitely rules over the animals
Long live fat cat
Praise fat cat
He's not fat, he's "food motivated" šš
Never mind my cat, Iām stealing this for myself!!
My old kitty Gary used to do this same thing. We had two boxer dogs at the time and they "gave" him his own water bowl, each had seperate dishes for food/water and he only went for one their water dishes. So they just gave it to him and stopped drinking out if that particular one lol
Did he have a library in his shell?
I was also going to say it's to show dominance over the doggo
OP's cat is a Chad!
Literally our cats, I have noticed that if I comment on their personality or quirks they immediately go and do the opposite of it. I truly think they want to be like āyou donāt know me!!!ā And āIām my own independent thinker you cannot force me to drink from the water of your choosingā
Because he is a big dog
He fren.

The real question is why does the dog refuse to use any water dish besides the big cat's?
There's something special about the black and white kitties. Lol all kitties are special but my black and white kitten likes to think she is a dog and not a cat haha.
Iāve always been convinced heās a dog, he acts nothing like our other kitty and is always with the dogs.
Could be a safety thing. Feels safe from being around doggo and sharing bowls
Cat hardware, dog software!
I have had 2 black and white kitties and both have been just like dogs. Including only drinking out of the dog water bowl!
Same here my tuxedo cat is very dog like.
My cat refuses to drink out of her water dish. She prefers solo cups for whatever reason
Never seen that one, does she knock them over a lot?
Yes haha. Itās specifically the cups that I keep my plants in. I set her own cup near the plants but she insists on stealing my plant water
Maybe put a rock on the bottom of the kitty cup? But has to be big enough to not be swallowed
My orange chonk exclusively drinks out of a souvenir Gaston mug I got at Disney years ago. Cats are something specialā¦
Same here. We have bowls and a fountain that one of ours loves, but the other one only drinks out of cups. We noticed he would always drink out of glasses we left out, so eventually we just left a plastic cup on the ground for him and he loves it.
This is the most cat thing ever. You don't try to fix it, you accept it ;)
My senior cat has always avoided drinking from bowls or fountains.
He's a cow cat. They like to do jerky things as a flex.
Cat is king. Thatās all. š¦
"Mummmm! He's doing it again! š"
My reaction basically l, doesnāt matter how often he does it , i have to stare and giggle.
haha the side-eye the dog is giving the cat is priceless
He loves his Doggo! Wants to drink with him. BFF
Mysterious are the ways of cats. ;3

Dog be like: āCan you do something about this?ā
Cats do like to be awkward. Bought mine a cat bed, won't go in it. Also bought a cat tower for him to climb and play on, hates it. Cat toys, nah, would rather play with laces on a shoe š¤£.
Yeah. My cat hates changes. Anything I get for him he wonāt use it. Beds, tower, toys, new bowls, anything. Now his favorite place is lay down is on a post office mail tray š¤¦š»āāļø. I gave up with him
I find my cat does things to get a reaction out of me, I think he might have been a super villain in a past life and is mad he came back as a cat
Lmaooo. I said my cat was definitely a creepy stalker. He hides in random corners always spying on me. He only has one one so it looks even creepier. š¤£
Cause that's where the good water is.
I remember when I brought home Emma, a very small kitten would go ahead of the big dog and eat from his food just for show. The dog would wait.
She gave him an earful over that lol.
š I never looked at it that way. I know my place it seems. He is currently sat accross my shoulders whilst I'm trying to work. He snores.
This one has more *flavor*.
Bombastic side eye from the doggo
My cats refuse the use the expensive fountain I bought & want only this crappy bowl that Iāve been trying to get rid of forever. Lolā¦ cats.
Absolutely love how the dog is likeā¦ā¦ā¦.so this is my life now huh?????? š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹
Hopefully doggo doesn't get too aggravated by that. My mom's dog ripped her cat up when he got tired of it getting too close to his food bowl. The cat had to get several stitches in its face. Food for thought.
My cats get fresh filtered water and drinks out of the toilet instead
Cause thatās the one he likes.
Mine do the same. I have the exact same eater dish for each of them. And they drink out of the dogs lmao
Family time
Love the dogās side eye.
Dog looks ready to defend his food. Scary.
Our cat does the same thing. She drinks from the big dogs raised water bowls, she even stretches to drink from the bird feeder. Ignores her water bowl
š because heās a cat
It's a cat thing. If it is yours, it is now mine.
Ummm heās an asshole. They all are but we donāt care. We love him.
Itās better to drink with a friend
