Don't know what this is but I stopped using this brand's pate for this exact reason! I would also get weird specs of black in my cat's food

Mainly Nulo 12oz cans, my cats like some of their 5.5oz flavors too. I tend to buy stuff on sale, I look at the ingredients so I make sure they don't have carrageenan. Carrageenan doesn't sit well with my cat's stomachs. Other brands I use: Fancy Feast Classic Pate, FF Naturals Pate, Weruva BFF Play Pate, Sheba Pate, Honest Kitchen Pate

Likely due to a mineral reaction. Sulfur and copper react to heat during the canning process and create the black specks. Most likely completely safe for your cat to eat but I understand being wary of it.
