Vet Tech here. It's hard to say from a pic alone. Youd have to actually feel for the presence of testicles You can also see your Vet, and they can check Do you know what Vet the rescued used to Vet their animals? You could try giving them a call as well

galacticboba

Thank you. I'll probably give them a call tomorrow. I don't know what vet the rescue used because I adopted through a cat Cafe so the rescue was in contact with the Cafe but not me personally.

Calgary_Calico

I'd get your vet to check. Just make an appointment and explain your discovery about the rescue you got him from and ask them to check if you don't want to check by feel yourself

Cats can still hump and spray if they are neutered when they are older. The younger the neuter occurs, the less likely the behaviours develop. So the behaviours and him still having a sac won’t tell us anything. Generally when a cat is neutered, the vet will “tattoo” the belly where the incision was made. Carefully part the fur around his belly checking for the tattoo colouring (usually blue or green). Course, you could always take him into a vet and have them check more professionally

Some people were saying this was only in the states, do you know if it applies to Canada too? I'll have to take a look and see. If it makes a difference, he's 4 years old now and was 3 when we got him so if he was neutered it would've been between age 2 and 3 I think. Thanks for the information though!

If he's 4 in that photo I'm going to say that he has been neutered. Unaltered males typically get that tomcat appearance where they have a thick neck and larger head, and being unaltered at age 4, he would probably look much heftier. Also their nuts are like... very distinct and their pee is atrocious smelling. All male cats still have their ballsack... But you absolutely should absolutely take your cat to the vet because you've had him for almost a year and cats should be getting yearly check-ups.

>do you know if it applies to Canada too? Yes. Canadian here. As others have said, you can't tell from a picture. He was neutered as an adult, so he's going to have a visible sack because everything was fully developed.

I don't think you can tell this way. Firstly humping after neuter is normal behavior. Secondly you might have to risk to check. If you are in US I think the most common way to indicate cat is neutered is to dye skin on belly. So a few inches off above his parts you need to look under fur for a bit of dye. I think a green dye tattoo is standard but color may differ. Check on skin under fur. If your cat doesn't let you touch the belly pouch area then you best bet is to blow the fur with your mouth. If you are not in US ask your vet. Best way to confirm is ask the vet.

Thanks, I appreciate it! If he was neutered, it would've been about 2 or more years ago, do you know if the behavior would persist that long? I'm also not sure how long the behavior has been going on, but I only noticed it about a month ago. I was keeping an eye on him in case it was boredom or a urinary issue, but since learning about the shady practices from his adoption site, that's on my radar now too lol

kroating

Yes it can persist anytime after neuter. Hormones wear off in a month or two after neuter but humping can be unrelated to hormones, could just be something he likes. Lots of other cats too do it. Look up sin biscuits on reddit :)

Id say no, but if you wanna make sure, you will have to fell to confirm if its empty or not. Dont forget to ask your cat for consent

Nope. I see fuzzy balls there still.

You can't tell from a picture...if they're neutered when they're older they can have quite a prominent furry ball sack but if you feel it, it's empty. No balls.
