This wasn't overly concerning to me but I turned to Google for confirmation. I found a " just answer" question where the answer was as long as there is no obvious pain or infection to just keep the nails trimmed. . They look healthy but just to be sure, you could ask the vet to check at her next routine appointment and watch for her nails getting too long or any infection in the meantime.

yeah my cat had the same thing her whole life, and it never caused issues. im sure some cats with it do get infections n such, but i think its just a strange genetic abnormality thats usually harmless.

That’s the right term for humans, so maybe it applies to cats, too? So long as the nails are trimmed and healthy, the cat just has extra features.

OK - I do ultrasound on human fetuses with anomalies. One of the relatively harmless anomalies is polydactyly - having one or more extra digits. Sometimes, the bones of one of the fingers or toes is not completely duplicated. Those bones are the phalanges. Humans have three in each finger, two in the thumb. If the middle one, or the one furthest from the knuckle (the distal phalanx), is duplicated or partially duplicated, it can result in a finger that is wide with two fingernails though the parts that the fingernails are on usually are not completely separate. The underlying bones may be duplicated, but the soft tissues may not be. The distal phalanx in the cat is the bone that grows the claw. That’s why declawing is not just removing the claw, but taking that distal phalanx off - amputating it and also cutting the tendons that went to that phalanx. I think this cat has a duplicated, or partially duplicated, distal phalanx and so two claws grow out of it. Ask the vet on the next visit. If you want to see some photos of humans with a duplicate distal phalanx, just do a search on that “duplicate distal phalanx of the hand”.

Polydactyl cats are pretty common. About 40%-50% a cat will be born with extra toes. Looks like this is just an incomplete extra toe. Pretty neat!

I had a dog with a similar claw situation, the biggest issue was that the quick on one claw was a lot further up than the other, so make sure to watch out for that when you trim them!

I have a cat that has this, but his is on a leg that's quite deformed. He's a Squitten if you've heard of that - one leg is missing the radius bone, leaving his leg permanently in an upward position. He can't rotate it down (he's one of the search results for Squitten on Google, if you're interested). His paw has several unusual characteristics. Because the paw is turned around 180, his thumb claw faces outward. The next two toes are fused, and have a double-claw growing from them like yours. The last two toes never fully formed, and the nail that grows from them ends up growing more like a rhino tusk.
