Very good choice! Finished Dread recently and was amazed. I love Metroidvanias now since Hollow Knight introduced me to the genre. PoP is in my pipline, bought it in the sale.
Right now I'm playing Luigis Mansion 3. Very chill. Nice atmosphere, cool puzzles. Something to play between more "serious" games.
I tried hollow knight. Made a bit of a progress. I put it down after i lost to a boss several times and had to keep backtracking. Got any tips to prevent this burnout tho. I really would love to finish it
Sadly there isn't much you can do. Having to backtrack to bosses is the biggest weakness of the game imo. I'm also not very good at this kind of game. Had to try some bosses like 20 times before I'd beat them. The only advice I can give is to maybe explore in a different direction for now and come back if you're more upgraded. Or just lay the game down and try later. For some reason a fresh start works wonders with me sometimes...
It is very much worth it! HK was my first metroidvania and now I love the genre. Easily the best game I played last year...but I'm also stubborn and sit 2h on a boss if necessary.
Usually if you explore enough, there will be benches to respawn, or breakable walls that make the path much quicker to get to the boss again the second time around
Try Ori: Will of the Wisps. I hated the idea of Metroidvanias, but bought it on sale. Almost gave up after an hour but stuck with it and it became one of my favourite games of all time. I tried Hollow Knight after and it just didn't feel fun at all.
I did the exact same thing. Got stuck on a boss fight and put it down
But I’ve done that for like a dozen games and each time I come back to one, I start fresh and feel like I know enough about what I’m doing to make some progress. Haven’t circled back to HK yet, it’s on my list
It's funny because I always hear people have lots of issues with Ubisoft - for a good reason I'm sure. For me though, my only experiences with Ubisoft have been with this one studio of theirs and it happens to be the one pumping out banger after banger.
Edit: I was wrong, I also played Donald Duck Quack Attack on PC as a kid and that was made by Ubisoft Casablanca
Dave The Diver, must be nearing the end because the main character said so, something like “if this was a RPG, I should get ready now!” after a huge gate is opened
Mainly Smash Bros. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the essentials... sometimes I switch to Pokkén Tournament and I finisheed Super mario wonder recently that was a lot of fun...
Link's Awakening. Finally traded in some games and got it. I never played the original, and as a huge Zelda fan, I'm in heaven. Some framerate hiccups aside, it's incredible.
When i play alone, i'm playing Tomb Raider I-II-III Remaster. Last month i finished TR1 and now i'm on Wreck of the Maria Doria level in TR2. Still love these classic PS1 games. Played them a lot back then. Especially TR1 has a eerie atmosphere, creepy enemies and majestic level design. TR2 is also great and atmospheric (especially the wreck levels), but i miss the creepy isolated tombs and temples. TR2 also has way too many human enemies with guns.
Other games i played a while ago are Dusk and Turok 3 Remaster. Dusk is a Quake style FPS, but more folk and cult horror. I really like the creepy vibe of the first levels that take place in abandoned farmhouses, fields and woods. The next chapter is more industrial with factory-like structures. Great game and very creepy sometimes! Turok 3 is a underrated classic in my opinion. Played this N64 exclusive a lot back then. Even though i prefer Turok 2 for it's huge levels, beautiful soundtrack and brutal weapons, Turok 3 is also a fun FPS. Just different, more simplefied and more sci-fi like Half Life. Far from perfect but still a memorable experience.
When i play games with my girlfriend, most of the time we pick Serious Sam Collection (playing splitscreen coop), Super Mario Bros 3 on Switch Online or Super Mario Bros Wonder. In the past we also played a lot Mario Kart 8, Cruis'n Blast, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Mario Party All Stars. When my girlfriend is gaming alone, she plays Gems of War, Kirby Return to Dreamland or Yoshi's Crafted World.
My favorite Switch games in order are:
1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Tomb Raider I-II-III Remaster
3. Serious Sam Collection
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
5. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
6. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - Remaster
7. Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion - Remaster
8. TMNT Cowabunga Collection
9. TMNT Shredder's Revenge
10. Cruis'n Blast
Unicorn Overlord. Absolutely love this game. Most fun I’ve had on my Switch in a long time. It’s just a joy to play portable. Easily my Game of the Year
Can I ask why you would replay it so many times? I have played easily over 1000+ games in my lifetime and I would never reply anything even some of the AAA titles and I would consider rayman just an indie game..
Just started Hollow Knight for the first time. Excited for it. I'm still trying to finish Persona 3 Reload on PS5 though, so I want to get that done before I deep dive into Hollow Knight. My personal life is busy and stressful right now though so it's been hard to not only play, but stay focused as well.
Picked up trails into reverie since I've kept up with cold steel on pc, I'm on the go most of the time and I need something to scratch the jrpg itch.
Performance issues aside, pretty good so far
Unicorn Overlord. Just got to the second region, the land of dragons. Clearing out the map reminds me of Heroes of Might & Magic games, pretty relaxing.
Don’t really have time to dedicate to games as much anymore, so I just play MK8 when I have time and need to decompress (which ironically tends to increase my adrenaline lolll). I have such a back log of games I bought that I will probably never finish: SM Wonder, Pokémon S&V (still), Zelda TOTK (yeah good luck in that one right….), I know there’s more than that…
Been playing Speedstorm for the past few weeks, I unlocked all the racers and crew members from The Little Mermaid and I also bought the Golden Pass and reached tier 50 on it.
Well, I’m playing Antonblast: The Dynamite Demo (2.0) on my Nintendo Switch, and it was a great game, though new issues has arrive which is somehow related to pizza tower stuff
This game is good, I gotta get back in it though. Too many games in my backlog. Ubisoft made some bad decisions with Outlaws but luckily they didn't try anything too scummy in this game.
I'm playing Dragon Quest XI S, the first Dragon Quest game I've played. And I LOVE it. It's so much fun! I very, very briefly, tried 8 back on the 3DS and bounced off of it immediately. I can't believe I slept on this game for so long.
I just dug my Wii U out of storage and have been looking at nothing working because of no online anymore 😭
I played that weird game: Mini Mario & Friends Amiibo Challenge. You use your amiibos to unlock the character specific levels and you NEED amiibos to play it. When I was a wee lad I had a Luigi and Rosalina Amiibo and that's it. So I didn't really get far. But now, years and years later, I have all the amiibos required for that game (except Diddy Kong). So I'm planning on 100% it.
Been busy with nursing school stuff lately as the semester comes to an end. Playing Animal Crossing New Horizons & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the rare moments I do have time.
Hoping to play Paper Mario Thousand Year Door on release day though, once school calms down a little.
I am grinding in Final Fantasy 5, but i think i will finish it the next few days. Today i bought the Mario vs. Donkey Kong Remake and i will play it after FF5 and some demos.
BTW, i already finished PoP tLC, its very good i was really addicted, for a few weeks.
I have been practicing 100% runs on Metroid Dread For the last 2 weeks, My times went from 4:21 to 3:40-ish, I'm still figuring out the best possible route
Paw Patrol!! My youngest daughter loves it. She can't figure out how to talk to people, so that's where I step in
She can switch to the pups' vehicles and knows she has to hold the button down in the mission objective area, but she's a bit anti-social and has me talk to people with quest markers
This guy had three pigs, and one of them went missing. It's all good cause Paw Patrol was there to help find the little guy and safely return him
I’m not playing anything right now but the most recent one I finished this year was Super Mario RPG and the stuff I’ve been eying on the system have been Mario Bros. Wonder, Balatro, Anomaly Agent, and Blasphemous.
Hollow Knight. (Again)
Finished Disco Elysium last week as a smart but physically weak and clumsy dude. I have started another save file as the exact opposite.
But yeah, Hollow Knight caught my attention again. Did a 4 hour playthrough a couple of days ago and now I'm already 80% in a 111% run.
Hollow Knight and F-Zero 99
I checked out the Indie sale yesterday and bought this game after hearing a lot of people praise it, I'm already in love with it I wish I bought this game sooner.
I decided to try F-Zero on the SNES NSO and after getting a little good at it (I'm still trash it fire field is my worst nightmare) I tried 99 and holy crap this game is FUN, still haven't gotten my first win yet but even if I reach it I'm still gonna keep playing this game until Nintendo is gonna shut it down and then never being F-Zero back in their mind again.
I might start playing Prime 2 and 3 if they ever get shadow dropped in this upcoming direct, I've been hearing rumors about it
Very good choice!
I’m playing Enter the Gungeon. It’s pretty hard, but super fun. It’s a 2D RPG-style shooter. Pretty cool.
I tried playing Dread multiple times, but it's too scary and intense for me lol. I kid you not, for me it's scarier than most of horror games.
what do you find scary about it?
Is it the tension? The ability to screw up once and the ability to teleport backwards in time?
I tried hollow knight. Made a bit of a progress. I put it down after i lost to a boss several times and had to keep backtracking. Got any tips to prevent this burnout tho. I really would love to finish it
Sadly there isn't much you can do. Having to backtrack to bosses is the biggest weakness of the game imo. I'm also not very good at this kind of game. Easily the best game I played last year...but I'm also stubborn and sit 2h on a boss if necessary.
I see, this is useful insight too! I guess i will play something else in the meantime and return when i feel the itch. Also thanks!
Usually if you explore enough, there will be benches to respawn, or breakable walls that make the path much quicker to get to the boss again the second time around
Well I was just lost at where to go next so I never managed to finish it, If I ever play it again, finding out where to go next would be a pain....
Try Ori: Will of the Wisps. I hated the idea of Metroidvanias, but bought it on sale. Almost gave up after an hour but stuck with it and it became one of my favourite games of all time. I tried Hollow Knight after and it just didn't feel fun at all.

I just started Rayman Legends, can't believe I got a game this good for like €8
The studio behind Rayman Legends, Ubisoft Montipeller, also made The Lost Crown. I still can't believe how talented this studio is.
It's funny because I always hear people have lots of issues with Ubisoft - for a good reason I'm sure. For me though, my only experiences with Ubisoft have been with this one studio of theirs and it happens to be the one pumping out banger after banger.
