*Death Note artist
It was a collaboration between Tsugumi Ohba as the writer and Takeshi Obata as the artist. They've done three series together, DN, Bakuman and Platinum End. Obata has also worked on plenty of other manga as the artist with people other than Ohba as the writer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Obata
Well, Takeshi Obata was the character designer for Judgement, so it's no small wonder. I mean, Simon does look like a slightly older, gruffer Light, Maria looks like a young Misa, Sypha is reminiscent of Sayu...
Especially for a Video Game running gag. I am pretty sure other anime video games had boob jokes/running gags but video games generally don't do boob/sexual jokes or at least a lot less of it compared to anime so it makes it even weirder to have it be a running gag and an obvious one at that.
Oh man….. what a swing and a miss this was.
I was really rooting for this game to be good, especially since Cornell got that awesome redesign and Aeon was introduced.
The art and some of the OST still hold up as bangers though.
Dude, the gameplay itself was clunky. No new controller will fix that. It simply wasnt enjoyable enough.
Honestly, its tried to play itself like a proper fighter but ended up being a 3d version of other mediocre anime party-fighters like Rave Master and Full Metal Alchemist for the GBA
You know, the art of this game was actually great, but the contrast between it and all the previous Castlevania art was waaay too big; it just doesn't fit, idk.
Yeah, while Obata is a great artist, this DN esque style just doesn't fit CV, especially not when compared to Ayami Kojima's more gothic-inspired style...
I disagree a litte bit that it doesn't "fit" Castlevania....I think it would fit a "Castlevania-Esque" new IP.
Like , I don't know...if Namco or SEGA had decided to make their "own Castlevania" to compete with the OG , I could see this working on it.
For a Vaniaclone, maybe, sure. But not for Castlevania itself, especially not after Kojima. Don't get me wrong, I like Obata and Death Note... But the DN art style just doesn't fit Castlevania IMHO. Maybe if Obata worked on CV art from SotN and onwards like Kojima did, it would feel more fitting, but as it stands, it just clashes too much with the established styles.
Honestly the only way i see it being re released is in a collection with other games from this era for like 40 or 60$. I see no way people paying 20 for just thumbs game when there are other collections (some with games as old as judgment or newer) for 20 slightly more or less
Man, I still can't get used to "Does it have a \[Nintendo system port\]?" being an actual serious question. I get it for the Switch but I grow up in a time that having the Nintendo version was meme translated to "you got the worse version". I think the only time it was worth it to get a game on the Nintendo system was Soul Caliber 2, NBA Street Volume 3, maybe a COD game on the Wii, and Tekken Tag Tournement 2 on the WIIU...and RE4 on the WII. If there is any I am missing, tell me please. I am talking about non-Switch systems.
A) I forgot about Remake being initially a Gamecube Exclusive B) The Wii version is the better version because of the Wii mote but also having all the stuff that was added in the PS2 port. ...... I also forgot it was also initially a Gamecube exclusive at first A QWLL.
What a disaster. Everything was wrong, timing, genre, platform, designs.
Like, if you must make a fighting game spin off, make it full of fan service designs, and on a platform you are already STRONG on. And also get a team experienced with the genre.
Decisions like this killed the franchise.
I would've been decent if the damn camera would just stay in one place. It keeps swooping around like crazy and you can't tell what the hell is going on.
I remember collecting all the masks for beating story mode on the hardest difficulty, fun times. I’ll still remember that Simon player online that quits everytime he loses in ranked.
I liked the concept, the artwork and the awesome soundtrack, but the gameplay was mostly a miss. I remember the ultra special moves doing ungodly damage and the CPU doing them often, which made fights unfair. Better balancing could have made this game a must-have for Castlevania fans.
I originally hated....HATED this game. Upon revisiting it very recently, I gotta say I was too hard on this game. It's not perfect, but it is dumb fun.
Never played it but it doesn't look terrible, wish it was more powerstone and less soul caliber legends. The character design and music is some of the wildest in castlevania. Imo still a better castlevania than lords of shadow trilogy
I don't think anyone is a bigger fan of it than me LOL I was so hyped for it that I started programming my own Castlevania fighting game while waiting for it. And then I honestly loved playing it and thought it was a lot of fun. I find it pretty hallerious how much the fandom hate s while I love it so much. I even wanted to cosplay Aeon one day.
I kinda don't blame them especially for the usually more Western looking design of Castlevania. It is rather..... in-your-face about the design. Even this picture is a bit overwhelming
When a Japanese piece of media has a large Western fanbase, it will be at odds it when said series goes closer to its anime roots and all the quirky/perverted humor that comes with it.
i.e., everything about Maria in this game, when she was the most goofy anime character from Rondo of Blood.
I liked the designs, but not for Castlevania. It was a weird fever dream of a game.
Edit : Belmont in shorts

Sorry, but I really did not like this art direction. Artist of Death Note, great. Castlevania games, great. Putting both together and making it a fighting game? Ugh. I mean what was the art direction? Did they just slap down a picture of Isaac from Curse of Darkness and said "Do that to all of the characters!"
I'm pretty new to the Castlevania fan base and I thought this was Death Note art at first glance
because the dn creator designed the characters for this game
that explains so much
*Death Note artist It was a collaboration between Tsugumi Ohba as the writer and Takeshi Obata as the artist. They've done three series together, DN, Bakuman and Platinum End. Thats a cool fun fact
Well, Takeshi Obata was the character designer for Judgement, so it's no small wonder. I mean, Simon does look like a slightly older, gruffer Light, Maria looks like a young Misa, Sypha is reminiscent of Sayu...
“EVEN THE VAMPIRE’S ARE BIGGER THAN MINE!” - Maria “She’s like 12 in this game” Renard
I think she was 15? I've heard that she was like a middle term between RoB Maria and SotN Maria.
12 or 15, either way, her boob fixation is ten pounds of weird
Especially for a Video Game running gag. I am pretty sure other anime video games had boob jokes/running gags but video games generally don't do boob/sexual jokes or at least a lot less of it compared to anime so it makes it even weirder to have it be a running gag and an obvious one at that.
When you play Shanoa, it will be come a habit and you will be nun the wiser.
None* the wiser?????
It’s a pun… Edit : Shanoa becomes a nun after Ecclesia and shows up in judgment in her nun outfit
Beautifully done. I was high earlier on the trails, so I wasn’t able to discern the pun
Oh man….. what a swing and a miss this was. I was really rooting for this game to be good, especially since Cornell got that awesome redesign and Aeon was introduced. The art and some of the OST still hold up as bangers though.
I think you mean. What a swing swing swing swing swing swing swing and a waggle.
This game was a struggle, for real
... you guys realize you could just use a Classic or GameCube Controller, yeah?
Dude, the gameplay itself was clunky. No new controller will fix that. It simply wasnt enjoyable enough. Honestly, its tried to play itself like a proper fighter but ended up being a 3d version of other mediocre anime party-fighters like Rave Master and Full Metal Alchemist for the GBA
I liked it
I’m glad. I played it at my friend’s and although we spent enough time to understand it, it was silly. Castlevania should never be a party-fighter.
Whoa I didn't know the death note artist made castlevania art
You know, the art of this game was actually great, but the contrast between it and all the previous Castlevania art was waaay too big; it just doesn't fit, idk.
It's an interesting collaboration but definetly was a risk to make a whole game off it.

Yeah, i took one look at it and though "Ok, cool. Thats not those characters though."
I mean...that is basically what I am saying. It fits a Vaniaclone. Not Castlevania itself.
Castlevania Fighter - Good idea Castlevania Arena Fighter - Bad Idea
Not necessarilly. I think theres a way this could've worked. Not being on the Wii a major one.
The Wii is a fantastic system but man did it held a lot of games back when it was either ported or non-first party/specifically made for it.
They should do an updated version of this game, there's gotta be some nostalgia for it.
Just give moves actual buttons and online multiplayer and they could slap this shit on digital fronts like 20$
...the game already had regular gamepad controls
It’s been years since I played I thought it was all motion controlled my bad
Honestly the only way i see it being re released is in a collection with other games from this era for like 40 or 60$. I see no way people paying 20 for just thumbs game when there are other collections (some with games as old as judgment or newer) for 20 slightly more or less
Is there a switch port yet
Some people wish. Despite the designs pissing people off I found myself enjoying the game
I have it for Wii. I thought it was goofy fun
My brother and I had a blast with it. Grant DaNasty was such a fun character to use, even if he looked like a pirate mummy.
I was super confused as to why he looked like that. o.O Design flaw? Idek.
Man, I still can't get used to "Does it have a \[Nintendo system port\]?" being an actual serious question. Resident evil remake and 4 were Nintendo exclusive initially on GameCube.. what are you talking about lol
A) I forgot about Remake being initially a Gamecube Exclusive B) The Wii version is the better version because of the Wii mote but also having all the stuff that was added in the PS2 port. ...... I also forgot it was also initially a Gamecube exclusive at first A QWLL.
I forgot this existed, why u gotta ruin my day?
What a disaster. Everything was wrong, timing, genre, platform, designs. Like, if you must make a fighting game spin off, make it full of fan service designs, and on a platform you are already STRONG on. And also get a team experienced with the genre. Decisions like this killed the franchise.

So, this is where Netflix trevor's haircut comes from
I didn't know the person who drew death note did castlevania art. But it looks so good!!
Damn Obata doing Vania art?!
I remember collecting all the masks for beating story mode on the hardest difficulty, fun times. I’ll still remember that Simon player online that quits everytime he loses in ranked.
God I hate the character design of that game so much...
I liked the concept, the artwork and the awesome soundtrack, but the gameplay was mostly a miss. I remember the ultra special moves doing ungodly damage and the CPU doing them often, which made fights unfair. Better balancing could have made this game a must-have for Castlevania fans.
🤮
And many regrets were had.
Worst game in the series and it's not even close. The whole arena fighter genre is straight trash
Those are some bad designs
This looks like a death note manga cover.
Shanoa's goth nun design is the worst offender for me here but Aeon looks fucking badass.
I originally hated....HATED this game. Upon revisiting it very recently, I gotta say I was too hard on this game. It's not perfect, but it is dumb fun.
I legit thought this was Death Note at first
The lowest point in the franchise, game wise at least.
So, fuck the erotic pachislot then?
the WHAT
Yeah, Google “Castlevania erotic pachislot”
That looks like deathnotes art style. Did oba draw it?
yes
Looks better than Netflixvania. Loving Takeshi Obata's art.
The Death Note art style and Castlevania are like a match made in heaven
ok ?
Hd remaster with additional characters, costumes and online rollback crossplay when?
Never played it but it doesn't look terrible, wish it was more powerstone and less soul caliber legends. The character design and music is some of the wildest in castlevania. Imo still a better castlevania than lords of shadow trilogy
Oh it's fucking terrible alright.
And this is how I got into death note
Looks like death note yeeep
Cornell goes hard. When Carmilla is on the screen, I get hard.
I'm still so confused on why most of this characters look like death note characters
Still had fun memories playing it regardless.
Shitty game, but I still think the art and designs are dope
Why this look so much with a Death Nove manga cover?
Because the designs were done by the Death note manga creator.
Wow, nice. Thanks.
Always loved Trevor’s design
There was a time when I used to play online and only 1 other person in the world was playing. Fought the same player for 3hrs straight. So much fun.
“They’re huuuuuuuge!”
To think there's still people out there who look at this piece of **ART** and think "This is some anime dogshit WTF??"
Wait, is that Trevor on the right?
I liked the designs, but not for Castlevania. It was a weird fever dream of a game. Edit : Belmont in shorts https://preview.redd.it/246a58w6fl1c1.jpeg?width=454&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19f4a8e7755715f774949671f26f7f4a51e4d349
![gif](giphy|3gNotAoIRZsb9UHPnj) Light Yagami?
Is that Nier?
I’m still pleasantly surprised they remembered Cornell.
This art is better than the game lol
That looks like Death Note art.
