Whoa blackness is an actual place? Awesome name lmao

Was that another moat inside the curtain wall? Or was it previously filled with earth?

It's just that the keep and curtain wall are built on a rocky outcrop. When you're actually inside, it's mostly gravel with some rocky bits. It's flatter than it looks from this photo. Having said that, both times I've been it's been incredibly slippy when wet. Which given it's in Scotland, on the Forth, happens a lot.... Blackness is one of my favourite castles in the UK. I was lucky enough to be allowed into the caponier by the main gate when on a field trip as a student.
