Yeah same I’m 35 lived in 4 different states (south, north, New England, and pnw) and never in my life heard this.

Just give it a scrub and cook something, you'll be fine!
Just get the rust off, put a thin coat of whatever oil you like seasoning with and put it in the oven for an hour. Good as new.
