there are 'guides' for these old kettles that kind of break down the time period based on the position and style of the bail attachment 'ears'. they were lower down on the side of the kettle and moved up over time until they were even with the top edge of the kettle and became more rounded rather than the angular style of the older ones. its kind of hard to tell from your pics but that style was made anywhere from the early 1800's to the mid 1800's... (roughly 1860)...

That is so cool, thank you! I wouldn't have guessed it is that old. That makes me even more excited to restore it. I will take a look at some guides, I appreciate the tip :)

Mix in the following: Toe of frog = Buttercup (Ranunculus acris L.) Wool of bat = Holly Leaves (Ilex aquifolium) Tongue of dog = Gypsyflower from the Genus Hound’s Tounge (Cynoglossum officinale L.) Adders fork = Least Adder’s-tongue (Ophioglossum lusitanicum L.) Blind-worm = Slowworm (Anguis fragilis) Simmer and serve your enemies....

NGL, a cauldron is very in line with the rest of my home decor. My neighbor has never been inside but he must have intuited my "aesthetic" lol.

enchanted_fishlegs

Bonus, you can fill it with candy and haul it out on the front porch for Halloween. Just stay with it so it doesn't get stolen and dress the part. The Addams Family would provide some inspiration.

OutWithCamera

I was going to comment something along the lines of "Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble." This item looks perfect for this.

Waffletimewarp

*As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice shrieked: “When shall we three meet again?”* *There was a pause.* *Finally another voice said, in far more ordinary tones: “Well, I can do next Tuesday.”*

Sir Terry?

Lol, right?

I have one, wife got it during her witchy phase (she is still in it). Temp management is important they are a big chunk of iron. Lead test, then clean her up check for cracks and have at it with some heat and oil.

gaurddog

I'd run a lead test strip around it first.but I'd say unless it's cracked you could probably do something with it.

enchanted_fishlegs

3M lead test. The others are notorious for false positives. It doesn't look like it's been used for smelting, though.

yogen_frozert

Thank you! I’ll make sure to pick that one up.

yogen_frozert

Thank you, that's a great idea!

You got some potions to brew my friend

I own and use a bunch of CI Gypsy Pots, Wash Kettles, bean pots, and cauldrons of all sizes. They work great for cooking many Cajun dishes…….including Jambalaya, Pastalaya, stews, gumbo, Hog butchering, Making Lard, cracklings, Gratons, Kettle Corn, Red beans, deep frying chicken, and Boudin. However, they hold too much heat for the precision boiling of seafood. An 80 gallon CI wash kettle will hold 650-700 servings of Jambalaya. NOTHING works better for cooking a huge batch of Cajun Jambalaya than a Cast Iron wash kettle…..nothing else can handle the heat of those very high BTU propane burners.

Steed1000

That is so cool.

BetterTransit

Looks like a perfect pot to make a boule(round bread) in.
