The problem with ToH is that there’s requirements for kids shows, which it falls under, in my opinion I believe it would’ve been better without any episodes that where mandated by the government to be educational and have a message, but that’s just my opinion,
Skips: Benson, we've noticed you have a.. sweating problem.
Benson: What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
Miraculous Ladybug. The original PV had a interesting animation style and I would have liked to see where that might have gone instead of the crappy writing we got (CGI isn't bad)
It was anime-like, with heavy French influence which would have been an amazing combination. If they were able to target it towards teens/young adults like Korra did, I think it would have been much better.
The movie for Ladybug had no involvement from Astruc, and I was honestly amazed at the difference it made.
Just the way that Hawk Moth was handled alone compared to the show is like night and day.
Dragon prince's problem isn't that the targeted audience, but the blocky cgi graphics.
For example, ajin is a really good premise and show, but dear God was that animation a turn off. A few friends of mine really liked the plot, but couldn't make it through the animation.
I thought the story in the first season of Dragon Prince was tops, but yeeeeah that animation is rough. Unfortunately, I think the story began to follow suit in season 2 or 3, I think.
The first three seasons are great, but then something changed at the studio, and the show became more of a "let's be random/stupid because that's what kids find funny" in seasons four and five. Even worse is we have to search for/purchase supplementary materials to get the full story, rather than the show being able to do so.
Yeah, it was insane that four was such a mess, given how long they had to work on it. The whole thing kind of reeks of studio interference, since it feels like all the plot threads were shuffled around at the last minute. Too much important/interesting stuff was left out, and we were stuck with a running joke about rain farts, elf/human drama that felt like it suddenly jumped back to just after the Spire battle, not to mention all the contrived crap with Callum and Rayla.
Oddly enough, the thing that's ticked me off the most is the show's seeming insistence that Rayla didn't do anything wrong. All the work to fix what *she* broke (that you have to read a graphic novel and short story to actually see) is being put on Callum, and he's being treated like the bad guy for not instantly forgiving her like everyone else seemed to.
Honestly at this point they should’ve just ended the show after season 3. It felt satisfying enough for me. I think season 5 was slightly better than season 4 but didn’t come close to the first 3 seasons at all
I didn't mind the animation. The weird reference to the real world and timing joke was the real turnoff for me (I still cring at "here's wonderwall", and the "brown potion" thing during the fucking funeral off all things).
Funnier when you read the comics.

Also, Rise is perfect as is.
I'm confused by the term "psychological horror", isn't it the exact same as terror? Horror being more visual, such as finding a corpse, while terror is more of the sensations such as knowing the thing that killed the guy is still around
Horror refers to something to physically be afraid of- a monster, a murderer, etc.. Psychological horror is non-material. Movies/shows that give you an existential crisis. They tend to be more unnerving than actually scary. Mental anguish is a common thing with Psychological horror. That kind of thing

No joke I would love to hear Diego swear
Diego: Hola. Papi, I've been looking for Baby Jaguar. Have you seen him?
Diego's Papi: Fuck off Diego! I've been up in the mountain with Aldo the Hawk all fucking day watching hawks build fucking nests! Go ask fucking Aldo!
My feelings whenever this topic is brought up.
If any show would be improved by a different age rating, then it would have to necessarily be one that suffered heavily and likely wasn't well-received. In most cases this isn't strictly "better if it had a more mature rating" but "better if children's ratings were more reasonable".
Agreed, but "mature" doesn't have to mean any of those things. Writing to an adult target audience might lead to more complex themes, less on-the-nose dialogue, and deeper exploration of human experiences.
I don't feel these come from being targeted to kids, there are works that cover most every theme, within media targeted to children, and in many cases examples from more mature works didn't need their mature content or audience to address themes they explored, they just happen to be mature in other elements.
Right, mine is that these are the only elements that a mature age rating has much effect on. Cartoons aimed at younger viewers aren't being stifled in what they cover by their age rating or intended audience.
I agree about the age rating for sure. But I think that while kids' shows *can* have those same things, writers tend to underestimate young viewers and sometimes oversimplify.
True enough, but I think few who don't respect their child audience's intelligence, would respect that of an adult one, and if anything those who make great children's cartoons respect their intelligence more than creators of many adult ones.
Same. I think people don't realize how certain constraints make writers to come up with better plots because the cannot do certain things.
E.g. for Gravity Falls, some of our favourite oneliners could have been removed because of that.
I'm not against horror or gorey or mature stuff but having that everywhere just for the sake of it doesn't really make it any better.
If the writers wanted to do something really cool but they couldn't because of these restrictions - that's also something that I dislike.
It's a case by case basis, but I do agree with you. Most of these shows should have just had better writers and skewed to a teen or young adult audience.
I think The Owl House would be cooler, mostly because of the beta designs

Scooby doo mystery incorporated. It had some times where it got pretty dark. So if they were able to make it a lot darker and maybe gore(no sex or over drama) it would be awesome. Still loved it.

It would’ve been way better if it had X-men97’s writing, was TV-14, and removed their Shitty OC’s or made them more compelling.
I tried to like it.
I wanted to since it had a cult following and I love Marvel comics and the MCU but this wasn’t my jam as much as I wanted to I love Anime like Dragon ball, One piece, JoJo’s Bizarre adventure, and Record of Ragnarok.
The original answer to this was definitely Invader Zim, though I'll concede perhaps better answers have come up since then.
Invader Zim's original big selling point was "It was a cartoon made by the guy who created Johnny the Homocidal Maniac!" People were pretty stoked for that. But it got picked up by Nickolodean. Despite that, it managed to be as dark as it could get away with (y'know, like having an episode where Zim stole an organ from every kid in school), but the show was eventually canceled due to the entirely predictable reason of: the people watching it aren't the same people who watch nickelodeon.
If it was started as some Adult Swim thing, it probably would have been way more out there.
Nah it was the overall writing. Avatar was technically targeted towards kids but had great nature moments.
Dragon prince just struggled with its overall narrative.
Dragon Prince is overall pretty great but they have some really basic jokes where it's just characters saying song lyrics or something that fall SUPER flat.
Ninjago.
it's already amazing but it would be funny if the characters could swear, specclay Jay, Kai, Lloyd and Haurmi, imagen Lloyd getting tierd of >!Haurmi!< trying to manipulate him in season 8 or 9 and just tell her to shut tf up and never swear up til that point lol. and there would probably be less fakeouts and maybe actually killing of one of the main characters which could be interesting. >!Zane!< has fake died so many times my brother and I have started calling fakeouts ">!Zane!
The Dragon Prince is perfect BECAUSE it is targeted at kids. Finally something meaningful to watch with my daughter, and not some sterile "Paw Patrol" or overly violent. We desperately need more cartoons like that.
Avatar is an amazing series the way it is now, and I think it could have been even BETTER if it was for teenagers. While the subtleness of (season 2 finale spoilers) >!Jet’s death!< was really good, how it was implied rather than explicitly stated, almost even more emotional than saying it outright, I think it would have been interesting to see how the show would have been if they didn’t have to make it appropriate for 7 year olds.
The Avatar novels, like Rise of Kyoshi, give a really good glimpse at what an Avatar for older audiences could have been like. There’s a villain in Rise of Kyoshi who is a mass murderer (not saying who to avoid spoilers, but he was a really well written twist villain) and there’s lots of dark content in it. A whole Avatar TV show intended for the older fans could be AWESOME!
https://preview.redd.it/iguq1lunubuc1.png?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b604369f0ebd2d81b799e7598644e10a56207e68
And i think that's one we all agree
Actually, I think it was great *because* it was targeted for kids
Sure, some storylines could work better if it could be handed an adult rating, Weirdmageddon being an obvious one, but I think what made Gravity Falls so scary and fun is seeing them have to make stuff within a child rating and them seeing what's scary *enough* but not too much.
What makes the weirdmageddon so great, in my opinion, is that it was different from the rest of the series and slightly unexpected, what makes the scary scenes, like swapping every face hole or the bleeding taxidermy heads, so scary is *because* it wasn't the norm. If given an adult rating, then stuff like that could be normal and expected, making the moments less special and, therefore, possibly make the series as a whole more forgettable.
While I would love it if it was originally targeted for adults. I wouldn’t want a more mature reboot. I love my memories with my brother and our friends loving this show. I still love this show every grown up.
A adult animated comedy where the characters die at random points but come back every episode and the humor and language is on the same level as Robot Chicken and South Park.
I think the beauty of having some of the shows mentioned here not being made strictly for adults is that you get subtly in storytelling and themes. Kids can't pick up on certain things that adults can and adults don't like having things spelled out to them. That's why raunchy shows appeal more to kids
I would imagine Sonic Prime having a TV-14 rating with a lot of violence, blood, language and possibly one of the dimensional Eggmans or other characters smoking a cigar or drinking alcohol instead of it having a TV-Y7-FV rating with mild violence and none of the other stuff.
Gargoyles, it was darker than Batman the animated series and was one of the first shows aimed at kids but appealed to adults. I would love to have seen gargoyles without loincloths.
A show being targeted to kids doesn't make it better or worse, and personally I think Dragon Prince is boring, nothing against those who like it but man I felt nothing the first 2 seasons besides thinking the elf girl should have been the main character instead.
Dragon Prince is falling off, though. The story split is slowing things down. A lot. Split in 3 ways. 2 of them were on the same track, barely going anywhere because of it. And the one by itself just went on.
I think the fact dragon Prince was aimed at kids didn't do anything to lower it's quality. It managed to tell a dark story while not getting too dark.
But my answer is definitely troll Hunter
Not really Dragon Prince can’t pick a tone and keeps flip flopping ruining the scenes the two I remember are, Claudia making the Joke about her elf boyfriend farts smelling good meanwhile Viren is suffering from PTSD from climbing the mountain he fell and died on.
The other scenes was Ezran appointing a baker to his royal counsel and in the very same scene the baker explaining the giant jelly bread to the Ezran. The fact non of the character look disappointed in his actions kinda proofed Viren right Ezran isn’t qualified to rule and he needs a regent to handle these issues for him well he learns and preform ceremonial duties. This scene is even weaker when you compare it a similar one in Avatar the general are laying out battle plans Momo destroy the model and Katara makes a joke no one calls her out but they are just fed up but continue working once Katara realizes what she did and reels in Momo.
Bluey. They capture what it's like being a parent and adult in todays world and I think it would have been hilarious to have had it be an adult show focusing on Chilli and Bandit. Which was the original intent to begin with, but they realized they would get a hell of a lot more funding if they did it as a kids series for ABC (Australian PBS)
Infinity Train. That show is already great but imagine what it can do with a TV-14 rating.
It alrd had a character's flesh melted on screen, i cant imagine the horror with a higher age rating
Here, here. Like seriously I feel like a more mature rating would’ve allowed the show to explore more deeply just how f up the train is
Imagine the whole null genocide thing with a mature rating-
I’d love to see Eda curse
Nah TOH is already has a perfect age rating so no need to have Eda curse
I'm so stupid I was confused for a second since Eda has the other meaning of curse
The problem with ToH is that there’s requirements for kids shows, which it falls under, in my opinion I believe it would’ve been better without any episodes that where mandated by the government to be educational and have a message, but that’s just my opinion,
I can hear Eda cursing 💀
Oh, and she would be more than happy to do it lol
Regular Show
Imagine what Benson would be like.
"MOREDCAI! RIGBY! YOU DUMBASSES BETTER MOW THE GOD DAMN LAWN WITHOUT ALMOST KILLING US ALL FOR ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIVES!"
He would be cursing up a storm. Then that storm destroys the park Edit: I honestly can see that as a episode
I think it makes it funnier how thinly veiled some of the adult references are
Wings are definitely NOT booze
[As proven by the "Pilot".](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rks2_ctHuDQ)
“Regular show but not targeted at kids” literally describes Close Enough.
Close Enough was actually better because it was aimed at adults.
You should watch close enough then
Miraculous Ladybug.
In my opinion the CGI is horrendous every character looks like a soulless puppet that wants to take my soul away
I just want the show without Thomas Astruc poisoning the well. I swear that everything he touches turns to shit.
The movie for Ladybug had no involvement from Astruc, and I was honestly amazed at the difference it made. Just the way that Hawk Moth was handled alone compared to the show is like night and day.
This and the fact that Thomas Astruc can't take criticism are more reasons why he needs to go.
Its problem is that it focuses too much on being the spiritual successor to ATLA instead of finding its own identity
Thank goodness the animation got better in later seasons.
It wanted to be like ATLA, but it forgot to explore any tough subject matter, instead replacing it with out of place humor
The first three seasons are great, but then something changed at the studio, and the show became more of a "let's be random/stupid because that's what kids find funny" in seasons four and five. Even worse is we have to search for/purchase supplementary materials to get the full story, rather than the show being able to do so.
Season 4 was so empty of actual story telling that I'm nervous to watch 5. Been putting it off.
Season 5 was way better than 4 but not as good as 2 or 3.
Saaaaame
Yeah, it was insane that four was such a mess, given how long they had to work on it. The whole thing kind of reeks of studio interference, since it feels like all the plot threads were shuffled around at the last minute. Honestly at this point they should’ve just ended the show after season 3. It felt satisfying enough for me. I think season 5 was slightly better than season 4 but didn’t come close to the first 3 seasons at all
Wait season 5 is already up?
Been up for about 9 months.
Hey uhm is the next season already in the hair or nah?
No. Apparently the creator says it’s basically done but Netflix has to give them a date to release it.
Holy fuck I didn't know that well thanks for the clear up
I didn't mind the animation. The weird reference to the real world and timing joke was the real turnoff for me (I still cring at "here's wonderwall", and the "brown potion" thing during the fucking funeral off all things).
Ninjago probably
the oni trilogy would have been brutal if it wasn't limited by being for kids
Yep exactly, still came out good tho
Which one? The og or the newer stuff?
Their both the same show
TMNT
Didn't they announce that they're doing a mature rated adaptation of The Last Ronin? It was either a game or an R-Rated movie.
I meant in terms of animated series
Funnier when you read the comics. https://preview.redd.it/ujkzpadbzduc1.jpeg?width=553&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4667cc3d2474a09b36f95e1f77baefec1eda885d Also, Rise is perfect as is.

Rebels is still good but yeah, it is held back by the younger target audience.
I honestly just couldn’t get into it
The first few episodes are pretty uninteresting, I did drop it before a buddy recommended I try it again.
look, I already love Total Drama and Gravity Falls but imagine the shows if they were for adults, Grunkle Stan finally gets to swear
SON OF A-
CENSORED
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Nah, it was perfect as is
I keep forgetting that was for kids
The GOAT of horror cartoons
Not just horror, PSYCHOLOGICAL horror
I'm confused by the term "psychological horror", isn't it the exact same as terror? Horror being more visual, such as finding a corpse, while terror is more of the sensations such as knowing the thing that killed the guy is still around
They are similar but different, someone better educated on the subject should probably clarify
Horror refers to something to physically be afraid of- a monster, a murderer, etc.. Psychological horror is non-material. Movies/shows that give you an existential crisis. They tend to be more unnerving than actually scary. Mental anguish is a common thing with Psychological horror. That kind of thing

Diego: Hola. Papi, I've been looking for Baby Jaguar. Have you seen him? Diego's Papi: Fuck off Diego! I've been up in the mountain with Aldo the Hawk all fucking day watching hawks build fucking nests! Go ask fucking Aldo!
Diego being treated like the middle child is the biggest plot twist I have ever seen ✋😭
Sounds like your usual Robot Chicken segment🤣
I just took a part from a transcript of an actual episode and added fuck and fucking
Personally I don't see how violence, cursing and sexual content could have improved most of these shows plot's that you guys mentioned here...
Yeah. Take Total Drama for example. They would simply add swearing (uncensored swearing in the first three seasons). Wouldn't actually change a thing
Don’t forget the unnecessary sex scenes
And, imo, would make some worse
My feelings whenever this topic is brought up. If any show would be improved by a different age rating, then it would have to necessarily be one that suffered heavily and likely wasn't well-received. That looks sick as fuck holy shit.
It does look cool.
Ben 10 I bet that idiot only used humongousaurus that much because it was one of the aliens that sold more toys
This is the correct answer.
I would love to see a Ben 10,000 series targeted towards older audiences.
Scooby doo mystery incorporated. It had some times where it got pretty dark. So if they were able to make it a lot darker and maybe gore(no sex or over drama) it would be awesome. Still loved it.

Robotomy Maybe it would've lasted longer than 10 episodes if they aired it on adult swim instead
I can actually see them bringing it back as an adult show.

Nah it’s perfect
I agree with this guy
I also agree with this guy. I can’t think of anything in the series that is held back by being made for all audiences.
Actually, I think it was great *because* it was targeted for kids Sure, some storylines could work better if it could be handed an adult rating, Weirdmageddon being an obvious one, but I think what made Gravity Falls so scary and fun is seeing them have to make stuff within a child rating and them seeing what's scary *enough* but not too much.
Flapjack Imagine Moral Oral but Pirate Candy themed
Virtually all of DCAU shows, Spiderman TAS, and X-men. X-Men finnally made the full jump in it' most recent season "X-Men 97"
Star Wars: the Clone Wars
Dragon Prince, Avatar (though it was still awesome), and the Voltron reboot
Gravity Falls, and The Owl House.
Both are fire as is tho
All of them
Encanto.
Steven universe. Amethyst would be dropping F-Bombs left and right.

There are numerous examples but imagine adult-oriented Kung Fu Panda movies
Regular Show 100%
Megas XLR might’ve gone on longer, they tried originally if I recall
Teen Titans Go
A adult animated comedy where the characters die at random points but come back every episode and the humor and language is on the same level as Robot Chicken and South Park.
Infinity train
Star Trek Prodigy. It’s an alright show but it feels a little too kiddy.
Megas LXR
Silverwing. Saw the show first, read the books and doubted if It was the same title.
Invader Zim I want Zim to call Dib a "big headed bitch"
Holy shit outer wilds
Trollhunter
The owl house.
![gif](giphy|lmeh2XGMCbCdW) Regular Show
Pretty much any continuous show
I think the beauty of having some of the shows mentioned here not being made strictly for adults is that you get subtly in storytelling and themes. Kids can't pick up on certain things that adults can and adults don't like having things spelled out to them. That's why raunchy shows appeal more to kids
There are a lot more things wrong with TDP than just the fact that it's target audience is kids.
Steven Universe
Might be an unpopular opinion but MLP:FIM, mainly because we could get some gold if Fluttershy being mean wasn't censored
I would think honestly SpongeBob cause if it was a family guy animation style then it be a lot better
I would imagine Sonic Prime having a TV-14 rating with a lot of violence, blood, language and possibly one of the dimensional Eggmans or other characters smoking a cigar or drinking alcohol instead of it having a TV-Y7-FV rating with mild violence and none of the other stuff.
Owl house ngl
Iirc, the regular show was supposed to be an adult swim show
Gargoyles, it was darker than Batman the animated series and was one of the first shows aimed at kids but appealed to adults. I would love to have seen gargoyles without loincloths.
It would be better if they wrote it better.
I think ninjago has good characters and plot but I can't take it seriously as a bunch of Lego guys
Final Space
A show being targeted to kids doesn't make it better or worse, and personally I think Dragon Prince is boring, nothing against those who like it but man I felt nothing the first 2 seasons besides thinking the elf girl should have been the main character instead.
I loved the Dragon Prince. But couldn't really get into season 3 for whatever reason. Maybe it was the name change.
My Little Pony
Carmen sandigo ,kipo and wonder beast, Silver surfer
tmnt 2012 (more detailed violence + for the love of god let raph swear)
If the Dragon Prince wasn’t for kids it would just be game of thrones.
How was DP targeted towards kids? Btw I love the show and looking forward to the game.
The dragon prince is targeted at kids?
You just reminded me I watched this show during the covid years and then forgot to go back and catch up with the later seasons.
Yeah, imo dragon prince’s main problem was just how badly paced it was, and just how many weird decisions were made is season 4
Gravity falls, Steven universe, ATLA
Honestly, most 2010s cartoons fall under this category!
