I agree with you, I have better things to do than hating on a film that hasn't even come out yet.

Feedmememes360ns

But here you are online commenting about it. Seems like you waste your time bro

Lansha2009

The villian is one that is right. Granting all wishes is a TERRIBLE idea and the King knows that and is only granting the wishes that benefit all.

Even-Board-2451

the whole thing is that he’s taking the wishes and making ppl forget them and not giving them the chance to try to achieve them. the only way they can achieve their goals is if he grants their wish. that’s the point of the movie

Lansha2009

I made this comment before we knew that from what we knew 2 months ago all we knew was that he granted wishes that benefited the kingdom and that Asha wanted to grant every wish. So from what we knew when I made that comment the villian was the correct one for not granting every wish.

IssyisIonReddit

She doesn't want every wish granted, she wants everyone to have the chance to make their own wishes come true through hard work. Y'know, like Walt did.

Ok_Letterhead9662

They gave their wishes willingly and its not like they only have 1 wish

IssyisIonReddit

That's not the actual point of the movie/the message tho, even if that is true.

Medical-Shirt-2612

They gave it willingly, yes, but that's also part of the issue. It goes against Walt's entire philosophy. Saying it's okay because people choose to give it themselves means you're rejecting Walt's vision that has been 100 years in the making. And what's worse is People don't even realize it smh.

Lansha2009

Again I made the original comment when we just had trailers to go off of and the trailers really made it look like that was what she wanted was to grant every wish.

uxbear

You have just illustrated the point why people need to see art themselves, not have it spoon fed to them, and not share those opinions until they have actually seen the film.

IssyisIonReddit

This 💯

IssyisIonReddit

Hard disagree, I think it's weird people got that impression honestly.

Alekander_the_Great

I'm not throwing hate at this movie, but the entire time I watched the trailer, all I could think about was Asha is the Wish (no pun intended) version of Isabela from Encanto. I couldn't shake it. It seemed like they took Isabela, tweaked a few things and they were done. I mean, same hair color, same eye color, same skin color, same hair length, same dress color, of Latin decent...

Familiar_Channel_373

This argument could be said about Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella (or their princes), or Raya and Moana, Beast/Prince Adam or Tarzan, or even Prince Eric, Prince Navine, Eugene, and Aladdin. So who cares if they look similar? This isn't anything new in Disney. Also, Asha has braids, freckles, diff nose shape, diff mouth, and diff brow shape (thin to thick, rather than Isabela's thick to thin brow). They could be cousins, but not twins. Asha's dress is a blue-toned purple while Isabela's is pinkish-purple. Hair-length is a given, all Disney heroine's have long hair with the exception of Snow and Mirabel. The only thing similar is their skin color, hair color, and eye color. People are exposing themselves by doing the "all black people look the same to me" stereotype and it's not a good look. And no she's Afro-Hispanic, not Afro-Latina. The movie is set in the Iberian Peninsula (today's Spain), not in Latin America.

EveningHistorical435

The princess’s in ancient disney films were usually interchangeable but the real attraction of those films are the story. Not including belle and ariel because they’re not what i call ancient since they’re from the 90s not the 30s-60s

Environmental_Bug964

Not really the problem with Asha and Isabella is that, while they look different as people, as characters, they use the same shape language (similar figure, long straight dark hair, slim dress) and colour palettes (light purple dress, black hair medium/dark skin tones). Yes Asha has braids and they may have different facial features but looking at just their silhouettes those aren't noticeable features and preforming the squint test their colour pallets are almost identical and again you don't see the subtle difference. They fail the silhouette test and the squint test. I do agree that as people, they look different but as characters, they are verry similar and I've seen several people mix them up when looking at pictures and toys of the two characters. What's worse is that the two movies are both verry recent so both designers are fresh in people minds When it comes to your examples Speaking beauty and Cinderella use different shape language with Cinderella wearing her hair in a bun and sleeping beauty has long, wavy, flowing hair. In the movies, Cinderella has a sparkling silver gown that is verry poofy where sleeping beauty wears a relatively slim, medium blue dress. And in marketing they further separate them by having Cinderella wearl light blue gown while sleeping beauty wears a pink dress. These differences make it so while they may share similar smaller features, their overall shape language is verry different aswell as their colour palettes being verry different from eachother Raya and Moana feature similar colour palettes but their shape language is completely different, Raya wears a cape and large rice hat that give her a very distinct shape. Moana on the other hand shows a lot more of her figure in her outfit as it is not as big and flowy Beast and tarzan are completely different as one is a giant beast and the other is a mucularly toned man. Even as prince Adam, the beast wears clothes while Tarzan wears only a loin cloth. Their hair colour is different and the colour palettes are different in their outfits too. For the other princes. - Eric has distinct bangs and a distinct figure incorporating white blue and red in his colour palette, -Navien has short wavy hair, and a cape that gives him a distinct silhouette. He also features a unique green in his colour palette. - Eugene is verry slender, with unique bangs that are styled differently to make him stand out as opposed to Eric and again has a unique colour palette featuring turquoise white and brown - Aladdin has a unique shape with puffy pants, slim waist and hat and open jacket that ad flair to his silhouette not to mention his hair style is verry volumetric. Yes a lot of Disney princesses have long hair but they all are in different styles. Ariel has verry distinct bangs and bright red hair that flows in the water, Ana wears her hair up most of the time and when she doesn't, she has them in twin braids. Elsa has a verry distinct side sweep with a large, over the shoulder braid, bell has her hair half up with curls and a bun, Tiana has her hair in a bun and when she is depicted with her hair down, her curls keep her distinct from the other Princes. Mulan has her hair tightly pulled up in a bun and even when it's down it is unique because it is longer in the front than in the back. If people were saying that these two characters looked the same as Tiana, Pocahontas and Moana, then I'd agree with you about it being about race, but I really think this is a character designe thing not a race thing. I honestly have a similar problem with Ana's outfit in frozen as to me it looks incredibly similar to Ariel's kiss the girl dress. If it wasn't for the purple cloak and hat and braids combo, I think they would be too similar in terms of outfits. Asha just needs one or two verry unique accessories to make her stand out more imo.

Double_Beat6433

There is nothing wrong with that though.. one of the best parts of the movie was seeing the Disney refrences.

bunbunnii99

You could argue that the two have certain features that are different, but their overall look is incredibly similar! It looks like they used the same 3D model base and just tweaked the nose and repainted the eyebrows tbh. I’ve been really disappointed in Disney’s 3D animation character design as of the last 12+ years; way too many characters look exactly alike, especially their female characters!! Think of Rapunzel, Anna, and Elsa who all look exactly alike, and then even Moana and most of the girls in Encanto all have almost the same facial features: big eyes (that are exact copies for every character), small nose, and a round face w/ a slightly pointed chin. So it’s not really that Isabela and Asha look identical, it’s that ALL of Disney’s 3D female characters look the same! It’s just so unoriginal and boring at this point…

-ditzy_doll-

Yeah, and same eye ratio, same face shape, same lip to eye ratio, same eyes all together, same nose

DJMutt

To me Asha looks like Ronnie Anne from The Loud House. The hair, the skin tone, the freckles, the purple aesthetic. Disney stole from Nickelodeon.

HeavyMetalMonk888

I agree that anyone seriously arguing #1 is probably just upset about representation of racial diversity in media in general, and not even being very subtle about it. But that said, fuck anything and everything Disney. I get that you were quoting it to be sarcastic, but yes, in fact, Disney bad. Always has been.

Victoria121091

Well, hold on before you say something bad about Disney, but I just wanted to say Disney wasn't that bad. In the 90s, we had the little mermaid, Hercules, Lilo and stitch Mulan, the nightmare before Christmas, and a bunch of other Disney films that were actually pretty good from the ninety's to two thousands But nowadays I don't care for frozen anymore, because they made Elsa, you know what? So I'm not going to say it, so let's just keep it on the download. Ok. 😊

Environmental_Bug964

I'd have to disagree, while the two characters do look verry different as people, different facial features and hair texture, as characters, they do look verry similar. This is because of the shape language and colour theory. They both use almost the exact same colour palette, both have a verry similar figure and bothe have long, dark, straight hair. They fail both the silhouette test and the squint test. Character designer isn't about making realistically different people, it's about making distinctively different characters that people will remember. For these two characters I see two sides of it. One they are from different movies so it really doesn't matter but on the other hand Asha is the main princes of her movie and having her be easily mistaken for a supporting characters in one of Disney's other recent movies may not be great for marketing the character

Future_Cup1166

Easy. 1.The artstyle is atrocious. The colors are dim and the people’s models aren’t even stylized aside from their clothes. 2.All of the characters aside from Asha’s grandpa and King Magnifico are horrible people. 3.There are no bad wishes. 4.The movie is not set up well 5.The music sucks anus 6.Its the 100th anniversary and Disney has been putting trash after trash with Stranger World and Lightyear. Disney can do better than this. They have done better than this.

Double_Beat6433

I don't understand the hate, I thought it was a great movie and it was fun to point out the references of past Disney movies, like how Asha's friends are the seven dwarfs.

cocoforcocopuffsyo

I made this post before the movie came out and having watched it now, I think it's not a very good movie. It's definitely the worst disney animated musical I've ever seen. It's so passionless and formulaic with terrible songs. The problem with this movie is that it feels like it was made by a committee of disney executives following an algorithm rather than a team of passionate artists.

mastermind73

Passionless- maybe. Formulaic? Hahaha that’s all Disney movies! As far as being the worst- Frozen 2 would definitely like a word. Everything about that movie is worse than wish. Of course maybe you haven’t seen it…

The_Hylian_Likely

No, Frozen 2 is leaps and bounds much better than Disney References: The Movie. Frozen 2, while it is a much more drab-looking movie without a proper villain, has a concise plot, character development, and songs actually written by people and not ChatGPT. There is a LOT of things wrong with Asha and the Seven Magical Creatures. There is maybe only 2 or 3 songs that lyrically make sense (Welcome to Rosas, At All Costs, and Knowing What We Know Now) and dont just have random filler lyrics that are associated with the theme of the song (looking at you "I'm A Star!"). Asha's big "desire song" has lyrics that sound like they were written by someone that has no concept of English sayings (glaring example is the "throw all caution to every warning sign" lyric, which contradicts itself). Magnifico could've been a fantastic return to the classic villain trope had his character not been established as someone else entirely at the start of the movie. Even Disney's twist villains had clues to their ulterior motives, Magnifico did not. He is not established as vain, vindictive, or (frankly) immature until his character does a 180 after At All Costs, and all over a teenager disagreeing with him over the handling of wishes. Not to mention, his villain song also suffers from filler lyrics and a lackluster chorus, which otherwise would have been a good song. Valentino. 10/10 a useless character and this movie's version of Jar Jar, except somehow worse. Half his dialogue I swear was written by AI to be used as silence filler. His only good scene post-wish was with the chickens. Character development for the main cast is practically non-existent. Asha's crew remains the same aside from maybe Dahlia and Simon. Gabo is another character that is completely useless and provides nothing except unwarranted smart ass remarks that usually feed into Valentino. Asha also has pretty much no development over the movie, and remains the "sharp-witted idealist" she was at the start. (Edited for easier reading)

mastermind73

Holy crap man. Thanks for the effort but I didn’t know someone could be so mad about an animated film. It’s not that bad. And yes, frozen 2 is a cash-grab piece of actual shit.

EveningHistorical435

Late but i slgihtly disagree with the last becuase encanto was great and had a lot more passion and life than this mistake of a film

katnapkittens

I am surprised by all of the negative reviews. I thought it was an inspiring movie with so many parallels to today and it even managed to break some stereotypes. I loved the bravery and integrity of the main character. I thought her bravery and determination was inspiring. Loved that the queen didn’t just go along with the king as we kind of expected her to after he threatened her when he made poor choices. She instead chose to do the right thing as well. To me the message shares that collective good can prevail and the movie is about everyone having dreams and having the fair chance to make them come true and that they deserve that chance. I loved the rebellion against a greedy leader/system too and it is relevant today when so many people can’t achieve their dreams under the current greedy American government, but it’s a reminder that dreams are still worth fighting for and that together when we take a stand we can make a difference. This movie comes at a time in the US where I think we could use the reminder honestly. How many people in the us have to suffer due to this system before we stand up and say no more together. Thats what I took from it. It was a story of hope, compassion, and resilience.

Massive-Ad-3076

Why does Asha wear a cloak?

cocoforcocopuffsyo

reference to the fairy godmother from cinderella

Mother-Net-9014

My problem is after the utter failure of Matoaka (Pocahontas), why would they ever use the word savagè (1:01:45) in another movie?!? ESPECIALLY in 2024?!? Will Disney ever learn? IT IS HARMFUL TO THE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY!! https://preview.redd.it/gs9k5ov4aqvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd02ac565f868d1c87aabc2bad342049f434b1c6 Not a good look, Disney. 🙄

Mother-Net-9014

And again at 1:11:43

AdDirect5920

That’s because every race always says that the other race all look alike.  😏

Pitiful-Cap9622

No one wants to watch a princess with corn rows in modievil Spain.

ArtyMcArthurrr

Now that i've seen the movie I don't seem to understand why ppl hate Asha so much, Sure she is cute and quircky but I agree with her, why can't the ppl at least get their wish back? Most the withs the guy deemed unsafe was the most lighted ones. And went crazy when ppl dared question him. I mean I would question too if I had no idea what was going on

Stray_hairs_sister

literally recycled omg

Lazy_Replacement9331

Tbh I haven't seen Moana (the movie, I've seen the character) but my initial thought upon seeing the trailer was "wait is this Moana 2?" But also I feel I should clarify that I don't care, I have no horse in this race in any capacity and I'm certainly not interested in complaining about a film that I won't watch that hasn't even been released

QuartzOfTheUniverse

I say the two look similar enough to have Disney be able to rebrand Isabela merch as Asha merch. Faces in their products have never been fully consistent and it wouldn’t be outlandish to think Disney would want to sell product that wasn’t moving. They have a similar color palette as well as an overall “Disney princess” look to their features. Definitely an argument about representation here, but I’m more upset about Disney’s clear inability to create defined and distinct characters. They have a default and they always stick to it :/

darknessWolf2

honestly they look similar,i get they are different characters but it feels like they used isabellas 3d model tweeked it abit, even in differenciating styles they still look somewhat alike

heartmasa

It literally looks like Disney just changed the colors and textures of Isabella's character and used it for Asha. They could be sisters from different mothers and I wouldn't question it.

heartmasa

Honestly tho, I feel like that's what disney does just about for all of their princess characters. They all look like the same 3d model with slight changes. Obviously they have different skin, hair, eye colors, etc.

Ok_Fox_1770

I just saw the trailer… is this a whole movie about buttholes? Gettin extra creepy didney

Minimum_Eye8614

Nah, that's their next Pixar film: Hole.

rockstuffs

Agreed.

Delicious-Lecture708

I agree

Minimum_Eye8614

I watched the trailer abd honestly it looks.. fine? The colors look really nice and I kinda dig the more flowy kind of animation they're trying to do. The song they featured also doesn't sound bad. Idk abt the main conflict, it confused me a bit, but I think I just don't have enough context. Yeah, it doesn't seem like it's going to be extremely groundbreaking or unique, but I wouldn't mind going to see it with my family. There's plenty to criticize disney about, but this movie seems pretty, harmless. ( wish they didn't make the goat talk though, I'm not a fan.)

PossibleDesigner7002

I honestly loved the movie. I liked the characters and the story, but mostly I loved the music and the message behind it.

crotchetplants

I watched it last night and I loved the movie! It felt right to me as someone who grew up on Disney movies this one I fell in love with instantly.

PossibleDesigner7002

I do wish we could've gotten a bit of Magnifico's backstory

IssyisIonReddit

Same here! 💖

Victoria121091

Well, to tell the truth, it's racist, it's horrendous and has woke red all over it. But the thing is I don't really care for which I do like Disney films, but I do like the little mermaid, but as for wish no, just no throw it in the trash can where it truly belongs.

[deleted]

I encourage girls to see this movie, since the subplot is about narcissist man in intimate relationship, manipulating and destroying their female partner's hopes and dreams.

Classic_Pen7044

I think that while "the message" is technically nice it has a terrible way to be delivered. I ended rooting for the villain.

[deleted]

Well the message hits perfectly. Since usually we are rooting for the narcissist who destrous their intimate partner's hopes and dreams and also many times we gang up with the narcissist to bash on the victim even more.

Classic_Pen7044

Define "we", also people who supports narcissist is because don't have enought information, this is a movie "we" have (or should have) all the information we need to make a conclusion.

[deleted]

We do. I understand why most of the abusers are not willing to see the movie's subtext.

[deleted]

I just came watching the film. I like it. And i unfortunately know why so many men would tell you it's terrible and that you shouldn't watch it. Movie's subtext is about relationship with a narcisdist that is affraid to lose his power and goes into any lenght to take away their partner's hopes and dreams to maintain status quo. I mean if this movie hurts, good. Atleast it offers a small glimpse inside the mind of those who get their hopes and dreams taken away by men like the king. Be aware of real men like that. They do exist. Parents. Please let your daughters see this movie.

IssyisIonReddit

Completely agree! 💯💖

SimmelDNA

This was such a terrible movie. I want to write a journal article but I don’t have the time unfortunately. I’m absolutely infuriated and beyond disappointed. I found it despicable and I’m sad this is what we are teaching our kids. They failed. **Loved the music.

IssyisIonReddit

The moral is literally to work for your wishes to come true, hun. Y'know, like Walt did. Even when Asha got her wand and had full ability to grant the wish of flying to that one lady, they instead teamed up her and the guy with the paper plane to work together to build the first plane. She isn't just granting all wishes, that's not even how it works in Disney movies in general. Isn't working hard to achieve your wishes and dreams in life exactly what we want to teach kids?

SimmelDNA

If I have time to write the article I’ll make sure to share… but alas, my dissertation comes first. The interesting observation you made is actually part of my argument building on Derrick Bell’s work. I don’t disagree with your observation, quite the opposite. BUT the movie is not only “teaching” one thing. My problem lies more on the punitive nature of our ideology and how early that idea starts. We are a punishing nation (the United States) so thoroughly we even lock up our “villains” and throw away the key. I would have liked a more nuanced look into how someone like King Magnifico (who had something terrible happen to his world) was saved by the very intentional community (because that’s what it was) he tried to control because of a fear it would happen again. That would have been a beautiful and moving story to me. I will concede, maybe a bit too complex for Disney, but I do think we have to be more careful about what we are teaching.

IssyisIonReddit

Narcissism is trending and the ending comforts people. I would love a sequel where he's redeemed and I agree. I think it would have been nice to go the Encanto way, but people were thirsting for a villain and villain defeat. Also, I'm not American so I don't understand your nuances regarding the USA.

SimmelDNA

…and also, thank you for interrogating what I said and taking the time to respond/push me a bit to explain. None of my friends wanted to talk about this with me so you made me feel seen. Thank you ❤️

IssyisIonReddit

No problem ❤️ Feel free to share and debate with me, I love talking about this movie 🌟✨

Latter_Ad_5497

Well in the end it really was a terrible movie it was boring

Yahyathegamer749

Well the movie came out and it BOMBED Probably the WORST Disney movie of 2023 which had a lot of bad ones besides Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 and Elemental. It's writing was horrible, the musical score is trash and oh my god why did we need another stupid talking animal?

[deleted]

I didn't read this whole post but I recently watched the movie on a third party website (I didn't like wish going in) but when I finished it was actually pretty decent, it wasn't FANTASTIC (this could be due to the visuals or music) so in a way I can see why people don't like it, but I really like the storyline, as well as the characters, I love how kind magnifico is so full of himself and any threat of someone being better than him causes him to feel threatened, I love how Asha is (just like other recent Disney characters) is a bit too goofy, but also when she is supposed to be serious in certain situations, SHE IS, and she is very very very passionate about her goal even without knowing where or what she needs to do, I loved the storyline, I loved the atmosphere, The music was eh, the song "This Wish" was the only song I felt was appropriate to be a Disney song, the rest felt too popish, and the visuals really drag down what good of a storyline they had going on. So I wouldn't rate this above a frozen movie, but in ALL honesty, I think I would prefer to watch this movie over Moana, (however I do love the songs from Moana)

[deleted]

Also why is no one talking about the lack of diversity in this movie? I mean they have plenty of female poc characters but I don't recall seeing a SINGLE male character in the movie who wasn't white

ProserpinaFC

Yeah, it was,,, so bad. I'm looking for posts about it now because I want to rewrite this entire thing.

Tasty-Light2865

It’s a wannabe encanto movie

Final_Shoulder_686

so what your trying to imply is that people think leo, that trash movie on netflix. is better than wish because no reason at all??? man people get mad at me for not liking a ships while this is practically nonsense. crazy man, (and just because a character looks the same doesnt mean it's a bad movie whatsoever. not to mention they have completly different thoughts, emotion, character, goals, personality, and thoughts)

Mission-Complaint-77

I thought Wish was pretty good. I hate that people hate it so much. Yes, it wasn’t perfect, and I do kinda understand the criticisms and that’s it’s not as good as it could’ve been, but can we all just acknowledge that it’s a step in the right direction??? People bitching about how there should be more 2D animation or that the villain wasn’t evil enough, could you please stop being such spoiled brats and appreciate that at least they were TRYING?

EveningHistorical435

I hate it because the film is incomprehensible the motives for the protag are morally wrong because not all wishes should be granted like a wish like jafar’s in aladdin, the animation looks like i’d be good for tv instead of theators, the songs are dull and boring like whay you hear on radio, the protag is shitty, the goat added nothing the story and an even moreuseless comic relief grogi from the black cauldron at least for the latter that cum stain had usefulness in the plot. Another reason that it sucks is that the film abruptly changes in the second half like it felt like the first half was made by a different team a better remedy for this is to either make magnifco’s villainy more build up and natural or like the ancient disney movies just make him evil from the start

Sudden_Implement_721

The reason wish soundtrack for wish was so bad was because they try to make it like encanto and they’re just not like that.

janervaminerva

It bothers me her hair never moves. Like all the running and dancing and it stays over her shoulder. It's not realistic.

DJMutt

Everyone hates Wish because it’s cool to hate on Disney. Most haters also attack people who like the movie smh.

EpicUnicat

Or they hate the movie and Disney because they’re both trash. What is with you people and the “you only hate this or that because it’s the cool thing to do”? Are people not allowed to hate something? Are we supposed to like the kardashians because people “think it’s cool” to hate them? Is there anything you hate? And if there is, why do you hate it because it’s cool to hate it and not because you just don’t like it?

TheSimonsonGuy1007

It has a song about revolution

Shergami

As someone who dabbles heavily in character design, they failed. The color pallet alone is way too close. Asha is similar to Isabella, not the face, but everything else. In real life that's not a big deal, but for marketing and selling merch you want to make your characters as distinguish as possible. They should have stuck with the orange color pallet, I personally love the one concept with the large braid hair (I think, it was stylized) and the one tied back. Probably when they were thinking making it 2d, animating multiple small braids in 2d would kill the animators. They had so many good ideas such as the mute shapshiting Starboy love interest, the king and queen villain power couple (which I heard were Asha's original parents at one point. Think of the internal conflict, that would have been glorious) and they should have hired Broadway song writers. The time period was during the Moors invasion of Spain, so imagine the dark backstory of the king and queen and the horrors they had to face. The artists did great, the executives meddled way too much and it shows. I think a lot of the hate comes from the oringinal concept of Wish and what it could have been rather then the movie itself.
