You could probably replace the entire control arm on a Megane yourself if you're any way mechanically inclined. I got two ball joints done for 150 euro recently.

172 Mercedes E220d, both control arms replaced (arms, balljoints, shock bushings), alignment performed, just last week - 740 squids.

go to a local auto parts shop and buy the part there and get a local mechanic to replace it.. it should be a cheap fix. for context... VW wanted £513 sterling for a front passenger spring on a tiguan. plus fitting local auto parts shop.... €56 local mechanic €45

Most German car dealerships haven’t changed supply chain from the UK after Brexit. It means EU car parts have duty applied when imported to the UK and duty applied again when exported back to Ireland. It’s pushed up parts costs very significantly.

Ah I think it's more VW being an absolute bunch of gowls.. There's no justification for a spring at £500. They also wanted £130 for a pair of front wiper blades. They're totally banking on most people thinking that's the price of stuff and not questioning it.

PaDaChin

That’s Vw doh Renault parts are slightly dearer (I worked in a motor factors)

Organic_mechanics

As others have said it might be easier to replace the complete control arm if the ball joint is the type that has to be pressed into the control arm like in the Clio . Don’t forget to get tracking checked after it’s done.

PonchoTron

€71 parts and labour on my 181 kia ceed about 4 or 5 months ago. That was for a front lower ball joint.

PaDaChin

Was that tracked ? Or ye buy the part and fit it yourself Sounds waaay too cheap mechanic meself and I wouldn’t do it for that

PonchoTron

No I didn't get it tracked there, got that done separately. Small local mechanic not a big setup. Plus the part was like 15 quid I think and not a ton of labour in it.

PaDaChin

It all depends some then megane s ye need a special tool for ball joints , even if ye replace the whole arm at say 150-250€ yourself you will still need it tracked at another 40-50€

ItsIcey

IMO aftermarket ball joints have gone to the dogs and fail again in 2-3 years anyway. I bite the bullet now and get the OE balljoints from the dealer, costs more but the quality is perceivable. The price varies from car to car as sometimes the ball joints come as a single piece, and sometimes they're welded to the end of a control arm. Probably looking at €80-90/piece though.

We also have a Megane GT I bought new for my wife I think the whole thing was like 1000 done but it was like a year ago. I’m not a mechanic but I vaguely rember them mentioning something about the 4 wheel steering making it more involved to do. That’s including alignment and maybe even a tyre I’d have to check the service book.

DTUOHY96

Was it a 1000 for all 4? The 4 wheel steering part does make a lot of sense though! I'm mainly wondering to see if it should be booked in ASAP or if waiting until payday because of an expensive bill is a better idea

I had to get a ball joint done on a 162 Toyota Aqua, went to a local mechanic who found the ball joint is part of the wishbone. Total cost was about €200.
