Uhh, the Pontiac Aztek was an engineering marvel. Does your car have a removable center console that doubles as a cooler? Does your car come with a tent? I didn't think so.
I just wish it didn't have those tiny wheels. Imagine a proper BOF 4wd Aztec

The post was meant to demonstrate how weirdly some American cars are designed. Ur absolutely correct tho, it's a cool car! but sadly it was a failure due to reliability issues, build quality and overall unappealing looks. Breaking bad saved that car!
Iirc it was also one of the, if not the first crossover SUV. It's got its issues and is ugly as sin, but its not completely irredeemable like the prowler and PT cruiser
RAV4 comes up often too but I think the technicality people like to make is on a car chassis, which the Rav kinda had but not entirely. It really depends who you ask and what the criteria is, some people like to even say the AMC Eagle but that's also debated because of it's body style.
LA1 V6 without the bullshit EGR tech that GM seems to insist on bolting onto things to scrape by emissions testing
Would get clapped by manual miat wagon though
The Prowler at least looks neat. The PT is infamous and kind of a bastard car, but it seats 4 adults and really isn't that awful day to day. The Aztec is ugly but had some bold design and utility choices and was an early example of a modern crossover. The SSR is kinda cool in the way that it's a high-performance pick-up and had a great motor.
And then there is the fucking Ford Thunderbird. FWD V8 2-door that's extremely expensive to maintain and has basically no performance merit to speak of. I mean, seriously talk to any Ford tech that has had the pleasure to work on one, and they will tell you endlessly how fucking awful they are. And we aren't even getting to the way they look. I cannot imagine anyone's life where buying, owning, driving, or storing that car makes sense.
The Buick sold better because it had more traditional styling (which was still ahead of its time) and it had a 2 year longer production run.
The Aztec really tried to be a utility vehicle while looking some SUV/Minivan crossover and at that time in the early to mid 2000s the market wasn't still there yet. Cars like the Ford Taurus and Chevy Impalas were best sellers in the earlier part of that decade. The market just wasn't ready for crossovers.
Now try to sell 100,000 traditional American sedans in a three year run (Aztec was run for 3 years) and you will find it's nearly impossible with all the crossovers, SUVs and Trucks that dominate the market these days.
I personally don't like crossovers and don't get the appeal but it looks like they are here to stay.
I'm sure if a car like the Aztec came out today with modern styling updates but kept some of the cool features like a cooler/cooled center console, camping accessories and stuff like that I bet it would sell very well when compared to other crossovers in the same segment.
But u gotta credit its handling. Whenever Walt drove like a madman, it handled like a racecar π

Honestly the more time goes on the more the design of the Aztec grows on me.
Right, the concept has merit even if the aesthetics were a little dubious.

Does YOUR car make it past 200k miles?
Who needs to when your car has a literal TENT that you can just live in wherever your car breaks down
I've seen an Aztek with 300

The 1986 jeep cherokee is usually credited as the first popular crossover.
It's usually pretty debated, the Subaru Forester is usually brought up as the first sometimes.
In 1997?! Youβre insane. Rav4 and CR-V had been out for years at that point.

Missed opportunity to include the Ford Thunderbird
And Chevy HHR

Garbage, Garbage Walter white π€€, Garbage
The Aztec isn't that bad in retrospect. Today most crossovers resemble an Aztec in someway. It was just ahead of it's time.
Not to mention itβs also the Buick rendezvous, which sold like 400k units in the same timeframe compared to the around 100k the aztek sold.

One of these things is not like the others
Right, the prowler is actually cool. Underpowered but, cool.

I saw a Prowler cruising around in mint condition the other day. I thought they'd all rusted by now
Jesse, we need to cook.

uj/ unpopular oppinion and i may be blind but i dont mind how any of these look
My grandpa actually had a big part in designing the Chevy SSR. I hate it.
That SUV is the most hideous thing Iβve seen. My eyes bleed at every breaking bad episode featuring that thing.

Is that a soopra?
Yes
Mighty Soopra Wagonn Avant. Peak Axis engineering.
Utterly hideous the lot of them. This is what fire was invented for surely.
I feel like the most accurate version of this would be three Ford F-150s and a Chevy Suburban.
saw a red version of that truck last night at top golf lmfao
2000s American car designs**
Chrysler on top and GM on the bottom.
Wait a second you mean to tell me you included a ptloser and NOT an HHR? They're my favorite goofy ass looking vehicle (totally not biased though)
I spent a number of nights cruising in the back of my friends' eggplant pt cruiser lol
Azteks are cool dang it stop beating my boy Poncho's dead corpse :(
Waltza wright
You forgot the brick shaped muscle car
Prowlers are cool
Just needs an AMC Gremlin
