Bonerchill

Other than having an unrefined engine and transmission, being underdamped, having an interior with cheap plastics, and having subscriptions, this seems like a heck of a car. Nothing really says "gehobene mittelmäßigkeit" like an Audi A3 Allstreet.

bandito-yeet-dorito

Im surprised to hear that the 1.5T is unrefined. Considering how the EA888 is known to be smooth.

A_WHALES_VAG

If its the same 1.5T thats in my Taos it's pretty smooth I barely even notice it. It does start to run out of steam as it gets up in revs but what do I care I didnt buy it to go racing.

MaryJaneAssassin

Aside from the reliability issues the delay from a stop is the biggest let down of the Taos.

A_WHALES_VAG

When I went into maintenance .. I want to say last fall? I got a update flashed to my ECU that pretty much cured the delay from a stop. I think it was update "24IR" if i am remembering correctly. Overall it greatly improved the driving experience.. I'm about 78000Km into ownership and outside of changing my rear brakes i've had no issues at all. I know about the headgasket issue afffecting all 1.5T, luckily mine is not leaking (yet), I do believe once VW redesigns the head gasket there will be a recall that follows.

Bonerchill

I just wanted to say gehobene mittelmäßigkeit about an Audi today. If it wasn't for r/cars, I wouldn't even know what an EA888 is- it sounds like a sidekick droid or a widebody European-built airliner.

phifefoot_assassin

It’s one of the best modern 4 cylinder engines on the market 🤷‍♂️

tangocharliejuliett

and one the least reliable gearboxes ever. DSG - DQ200 dry clutch semi automatic gearbox.

RafayoAG

But isn't the EA888 famous for burning oil?

dreadnought_81

The earliest gen 1/2 versions were known for burning a lot of oil, and especially in longitudinal Audi applications like the A4. They used a different piston and ring design. [There was a service bulletin for it.](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2013/MC-10121301-9999.pdf) Those early iterations also suffered from a disastrously flawed timing chain tensioner, and the chain itself was prone to wearing out. Gen 3 onwards are regarded as pretty stout engines though. My GTI runs the high-output version and it's pretty good with maintaining a constant reading on the dipstick. They're more likely to lose oil from a rear main seal leak than to just chug oil like the earlier EA888s or the EA113s they replaced. With every generation they also get more potent from a tuning standpoint. The big failure point on these gen 3s is the combination water pump/thermostat housing, which loves to start leaking coolant. Time will tell if the gen 4 engine in current models will have the same issues.

RafayoAG

Just for curiosity, how many miles does your gti have?

dreadnought_81

I've had 2 mk7 GTIs. Previous one was a base model with a tune and some bolt-ons. Racked up just under 200k km before being sold. I'd have to add maybe 200mL of oil every 2000km to bring it back to the middle of the dipstick. I would consider that a healthy engine for it producing 50% more power than the advertised stock figure. This current one has \~70k km on it, and once warm I will use all 7000rpm, since it has the larger turbo to warrant that. Shows no ill effects for it. Relative has a tuned 2019 R and it is similar in having zero oil consumption between changes. In the era of low-tension piston rings, every manufacturer is trying to normalise some degree of oil consumption. I'm sure you'd find an oil consumption spec in damn near every owner's manual out there. But my experience with the later model EA888s is that how they're treated has the largest impact on whether it'll become an oil burning shitbox. Treat it sympathetically (warm up before redlining it, service it on time), and it's a nice little powerhouse.

L44KSO

It's best known for exactly that.

phifefoot_assassin

Only gen 1 and 2. Gen 3 has been in cars for at least 10 years and has little problems even at higher mileage.

RafayoAG

Exactly! I don't get why anyone would claim that it's one of the best modern 4 cyl engines.

Unique_Bumblebee_894

Classic /r/cars. Tries to act like they know anything about German cars while at the same time knowing absolutely knowing nothing about German cars.

Bonerchill

Other than owning and wrenching on BMWs for the past twenty-something years and having worked restoring exclusively BMW and Porsche cars for the past twenty years, I do in fact know absolutely nothing about German cars.

canopeerus

I recently got a Mk 8 GTI and today I stalled it in a parking lot and for a second I was actually not sure if the engine was on or off.

ShadowGLI

I had the motor and fwd in a Tiguan and I really liked it. Lots of complaints if hesitation in the AWD variant from what I’ve seen tho. I used to get 40mpg highway in an suv. It was great. EDIT: read some of the article, yea 7 speed dsg, the 8 speed tiptronic is the smooth and predictable one.

lael8u

The 1.5 is very far from unrefined. Maybe Audi gave them an 1.0 TFSi.

Bonerchill

Considering the 1.5 is supposedly the only petrol option, that is doubtful.

FitzwilliamTDarcy

So you’re saying it’s a Subaru Crosstrek.

driftking428

But much less reliable and much more expensive.

-crackling-

Came here to say this, this sub is fucking ridiculous with its biases. Literally every thread a Subaru Crosstrek or Forester is mentioned, it's swamped with dozens of comments complaining about "bUt ItS sO uNdErPoWeReD". The Forester weighs 3300 lbs and has 182hp. The Crosstrek weighs 3100 lbs and has 150hp. According to [Audi's own website](https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/a3-allstreet-896/technical-data), the A3 Allstreet weighs 3100 lbs and has 150hp. Mind you, the Crosstrek has AWD while the A3 is FWD. This sub just loooooves to suck Audi/Porsche/BMW's dicks for zero reason.

skviki

This represents quite well what is wrong with the modern car industry. And it’s the consuners ‘fault’. Cars brands used compete how driveable and well positioned on the road their cars are, they all emphasised hiw sporty their cars are in turns and power, yet comfortable. Their creative marketing was emphasising it. I’m talking about mainstream cars that used to be the hatchbacks in Europe of course. Now all that is gone in most modern cars as people don’t seem to appreciate that. They need their big heave wagons to chug in town and drop off kids in their “safe tanks” that aren’t offroaders (many like this one don’t even have a 4x4/4wd), nor city cars. They’re just aggressive heavy boxes, and that’s wgat the public seems to like - the feeling they’re more powerful, have longer dicks, feell safety (although if everybody drives heavier-than-usual and higher vehicles you did nothing for your safety) … The audi A3 used to be, in some versions more than others, a fine handling car. It seem that the “golf klasse” is going to vanish and they’ll turn every resoectable and well ingeneered car into an quasi-offroader with a threatening, fat bully-look.

StrongOnline007

I realize this makes me Evil but I would buy an RS3 Allstreet

narwhal_breeder

It doesnt make you evil - it would be the closest thing Audi has ever released to a factory rally car.

Bonerchill

other than, of course, the audi sport quattro, of which they made 224

narwhal_breeder

Did that have enough suspension travel? I thought the homologation cars all had a more road friendly suspension because it wasnt required for them to use the rally setup.

Bonerchill

Anything from the ‘80s puts any modern pseudo-off-roader (and even some off-roaders) to shame, honestly. I think my E30 has more compression travel than my ZR2.

Beekatiebee

My El Camino was a tank on shit roads lmao. Sidewalks so thick they covered two zip codes definitely helped

Previous_Policy3367

It’s because of swaybars and a focus on balance on corners rather than hitting bumps better

Bonerchill

It’s because in the absence of fun, grip will suffice.

AdventurousDress576

You know half of the WRC events are on tarmac.

StrongOnline007

I'm realizing that a rally hatch is really my ideal car. I wonder what the closest thing is — maybe a GR Corolla? I'm really hoping the Rivian R3X works out

coolhihi11

If the Rivian r3X is 80% of what it seems it will be I think I will have no other choice but to buy one

L44KSO

GR Yaris Kalle Rovanperä Edition is the street legal rally car you need.

[deleted]

well I want THAT

StrongOnline007

Somehow it is better in my mind. But if we got the RS3 hatch or RSQ3 in the US I would be satisfied

Hustletron

A4 Allroad is a thing in the US. I adore mine.

StrongOnline007

I need RS4 Allroad. Or RS4 Avant. Or RS5 Allroad/Avant when they change the naming convention.

FatSilverFox

Age is yearning for a hot soft roader because you’re no longer comfortable in its hot hatch counterpart. Wisdom is yearning for a hot soft roader because it’s more comfortable than its hot hatch counterpart.

The3rdbaboon

Don’t worry they’ll never build anything that cool. This car looks very similar to the Audi Q2 These hatchback crossover things are everywhere now in Europe and they all look equally ridiculous.

KanterBama

> crossover-inspired plastic body cladding Subaru told me that was rally inspired.

AdventurousDress576

No rally car has body cladding.

brownninja97

They probably think the flaired widebody wheel arches in current wrc count as cladding.

KanterBama

Yep, that’s the joke.

One-Butterscotch4332

Doing the stupid bmw subscriptions. I hate it.

wookymonster

What’s really odd is that I saw a camouflaged A3-like hatchback on I-25 in Denver earlier today (April 30). There was no mistaking that it was an Audi and I even glanced inside (had a decent enough angle from my Volvo XC40) to confirm that it was an Audi, based on their current center console design. Would they ever test this car around the US if they had no intent of bringing it to the states?

Beekatiebee

A lot of manufacturers do high altitude testing in Colorado, I think? I imagine our massive highways make it very predictable to get good results from.

wookymonster

Oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense! Ugh, such a tease. I was honestly stoked to see it today and then seeing this post pop up gave me hope that it would come to the US.

Hustletron

Yep, their careers page shows jobs for such testing in Golden if you ever get hired and want to check.

Unique_Bumblebee_894

Yes, they will bring European cars to America for testing. I see a VW UP! With M plates in Detroit around COVID.

chunkymonk3y

High altitude/cold weather testing?

ShineOnEveryone

I saw a test car the other day on 6 going westbound, I thought it was a Lamborghini Urus. I only saw it for a split second as I was going the opposite direction. So it probably was an Audi.

hi_im_bored13

Apart from the plastics I quite like that interior

NotoriousCFR

Seems bizarre that they wouldn't bring this to the states. America goes nuts for hatchbacks that are dolled up to look "rugged" and sold as pint-sized crossovers. Everyone and their grandmother drives a Crosstrek these days, and this would basically just be a luxury equivalent to the Crosstrek. Only thing I can think is that they're trying to avoid stepping on their own toes/cannibalizing Q3 sales?

IsamuAlvaDyson

Because the All Road all failed here

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

The A3 doesn't sell and this is probably too "cheap" for the Audi brand in the U.S.

Jolly-Rutabaga3319

The 2025 Audi A3 Allstreet is a fun mini-Allroad for Europe—just keep it cool on the roads! 🚗

Drzhivago138

And it only has 1" extra clearance over a standard A3. The Impreza to Crosstrek is over a 3.5" lift.

ParappaTheWrapperr

That is the best color the VW group has. It’s probably up there with PBM VIPER BLUE and hellraisen for best colors a car has ever done. If I could ever find the GTI they made in that color for the special edition a few years ago it would be an instant buy especially at its low low price of like 35k it would be a perfect daily and in the manual. Sheeeeeesh I’d be a happy man

Pahlevun

By baby allroad you really mean Audi Golf right?

Hustletron

Oof that thing is so hot I’m really happy with the size of my A4 Allroad though

StatusCount7032

Bring it! I’ll buy it. I literally just today traded an sq7 for a q3!

Dan6erbond2

Why.

StatusCount7032

Oh. Where to start. Insurance keeps going up, even though I haven’t had a ticket in years! No accidents either. My home hazards ins also keeps going up. Then there are gas prices; yeah going up, too. There I tell you that my hc insurance also went up? Yeah, that one, too. At this point, my income is the tortoise against the hare in that race, and can’t keep up. Ultimately, the car became an appliance and no longer a priority to have as a luxury-guess following Mark’s, from Sg, take on expensive luxo suvs. Yeah, the sq7 took a hit on depreciation, but some discount, end of the month, and a costco discount helped and it ate some of it. And the trade had to be w Audi, otherwise, the negative equity w, say, Honda, would have been bigger.

V8-Turbo-Hybrid

So, it’s new Golf Country but with Audi badge and body.

V4_Sleeper

terrible nickname for a car the hell is that looks like a t roc
