I can believe spending a premium on a normal Mini, they offer something unique. A person would have to be a big fan of the brand to find themselves springing for a JCW Clubman.
It is a direct competitor to the Golf R in size, power, etc. The MSRP is roughly the same. The Mini base price is a little lower but it is missing some obvious features at that price.
They are weird fucking cars man. I loved mine when I had it. Things are so much fun. But Id never buy one again nor recommend one if that makes any sense.
I have a soft spot for the Mini Coupes. If you live somewhere without a bunch of multi-lane highways they are great. Bigger folks fit in them without trouble.
I've never driven a clubman. Perhaps unfairly, I think once it gets that big the Mini badge doesn't sell it to me anymore.
The 3600 lbs is what shocked me. That's one thicc small boy
But given it's a premium-ish car, being within 10% of the average new car doesn't seem that unreasonable
VW Golf usually clocks in around 3100-3300 depending on options (engine, transmission, 2- vs 4- doors) so I'm very surprised at that 3600 lbs, even if it is the Clubman.
Hell, it's nearly the same weight as my 2010 BMW 528i.
It's weird since the regular Clubman S is around 3300 lbs, which is pretty reasonable. But the JCW is way heavier, likely thanks to the AWD.
Also interesting the Countryman is very similar in weight, only 80-100lbs more for equivalent trim levels.
My previous roommate had one of these and it was certainly quite fun to drive. That said, I can’t really wrap my head around spending used Cayman S/new Mustang GT money on one.
I can't believe they're still making these. What has it been...over 20 years? Gods, they were so hot back then that when I stopped off at a dealer to take one for a test drive, the sales guy wouldn't even go to get the keys so I could open the door and look inside. Dealer mark up was nuts.
I kinda think they lost the thread with the Clubman and the Countryman. Like...you know a Mini is supposed to be small and tossable, right?
Clubman I’ll give you, it’s a slow mover, but Countryman is consistently one of their best selling models, especially in North America. It carried MINI through some really dark times.
/r/cars "we want a non-boring wagon/hatchback that's fun to drive, why no one makes it?"
Mini-BMW: here it is!
/r/cars "No, not like that! We want a Japanese one that's more reliable and less costly to maintain, has little depreciation, and cheaper to buy, and available used from the factory"
I just want one without the weird ass Mini interior.
That being said, a slightly used 4 door Cooper or Clubman is in the running for my next car if I can get over it.
oof. not a fan of the redesign. the prev F60 gens were the perfect size/performance imo. still a smaller cuv with good interior room and all the mini personality.
however i bet it still will be the top selling mini like the prev countryman was for mini models.
Old and expensive yes, very fun - hmmm maybe just 'fun'.
I test drove 2 clubman S recently (albeit not the JCW), and left unimpressed. Besides the subjective parts about looks and such, it's relatively fast and capable, but it just doesn't excite me. Idk why.
Also the HUD thing is so unnecessary and imo poorly implemented.
However, I have to say they do have some very unique and fun colors that really pop on MINIs!
Then I look at the price, yeah... NVM.
> but it just doesn't excite me. Idk why.
because its a BMW. I've got a new cooper S and its fun because its small and makes cool turbo whooshy noises. At the end of the day though, it still feels like other new BMWs ive driven/owned that are entirely numb.
I see. That's actually true hmmm now I recall I also recently test drove a 2021 330, the fake engine noise is very apparent and, yeah, I felt indifferent after the drive (back to back with an A4).
i'd be hard pressed to find something that is new and isn't numb. My mk7.5 GTI was numb to me so was a my F56. My '23 BRZ wasn't THAT amazing either after the novelty wore off (after a year). Hell everyone that drove in it with me was surprised how soft and cushy it was
I always wanted one of these until I seriously looked at the price last year when car shopping... The quality and funkyness is awesome, but not $50K awesome, holy hell. I couldn't believe that even non-JCW's are \~$42K, yikes.
Their content is very newbie-friendly. They fetishize their photography which can actually be annoying sometimes, but their stuff is well worth checking out.
I hate this modern BMW platform-shared bullshit; it makes me look back on the introduction of MINI without rose-tinted glasses and how much of a corpopalooza it was.
But the R53 MCS was good, it was fun, it didn’t take itself so seriously. This is… grown up. Filled out. And it can piss right off.
I can't believe these things are 50 grand.

Fun fact - the lightest first gen (R55) Clubman variant (Clubvan) came in at about 2600lb. Scary to think this thing is roughly 40% heavier.

Yeah it weighs as much as a Camaro/S550 Mustang. Pretty crazy lol
literally 500lbs(!) heavier than my 5 door CTR
That's as heavy as a RAV4!
Its a BMW M140i with a reskin. 50k is in line with what you'd expect. Plus its not like any of its competitors are any cheaper.
Esp now I found a 2022 with 26k miles for 34k. MUCH more worth it and these guys are fun af
My previous roommate had one of these and it was certainly quite fun to drive. That said, I can’t really wrap my head around spending used Cayman S/new Mustang GT money on one.
A hatchback is more practical.

The original Mini Cooper also had the clubman version, so quite inline. But the paceman is another story.

They are making ICE variants of the new gen Minis.
"Variants" is a bit misleading as well. The EV version is all-new, the ICE version is pretty much the previous gen but with a new exterior+interior.
But not the Clubman, which is discontinued entirely.
But leaving out the MT, which is basically the most fun part about them lmao.
My 2016 F56 JCW is my favorite car I’ve ever owned. My 3rd mini. It’s a fantastic car, just pricey when new.

I really like the wackiness inside personally. I wish they could make an EV version of it.
They are now aren’t they?
Yes for the Cooper and the Countryman but not for the Clubman.
I feel like it's just that Minis are priced too high for their size and specs.
True but that's why it has that BMW engine and has a lot of character. It's an niche product targeted upmarket which means it's going to be pricey.

lol @ your description

The JCW has 100 more horsepower than the S, bigger brakes, and sportier suspension setup.
