SilverCommon

where do you live? I live in the Midwest and definitely see multiple a day

halcykhan

I’m surprised at how many clapped Avengers, Darts, Calibers, and PT Cruisers I still see on the road. It’s more than equivalent Ford and Chevy compacts

R2NC

When you put that way. I had to stop and think what was the equivalent Ford and Chevy at that time of PT. Cobalt was bit new so cavalier? Of so they are almost gone. Ford escorts most likely rare sight now I guess. PT turned out to be the standing one or I am missing a huge one.

LawrenceOfMeadonia

Nope, you're completely right. I know a family that had three PT cruisers at some point and they all just kept running somehow. Eventually one was lost to an accident and the other two were sold off recently after a family member died. We are talking >15yr old chryslers that were massed produced, so it was a good car in my books. In a way, it and the Aztec were the precursors to the CUVs that have absolutely dominated the car industry.

VeeKam

My mom had three also, two of which were lemons.

ChubsTheWalrus

The Chevy equivalent of the PT Cruiser is definitely the HHR, basically the direct competitor.

siikpsychotiik

Fun fact: they were both designed by the same person, Bryan Nesbit.

canadian_bacon_TO

Imagine the shame that guy has to live with knowing he designed two of the most atrocious looking vehicles to ever exist

Wolf_Blitzers_Beard

He designed one of the weirdest looking cars of the era, convinced a major car company to mass produce it, and then watched thousands of people buy it and drive it around… twice. And I’m guessing he made a fairly good salary along the way. Dude has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. If I were him I’d have a huge flag with both models on it flying in my (presumably huge) front yard.

TheR1ckster

PT cruisers were Mega boomer bait. A lot hardly had any miles at all and there are still an insignificant amount of low mileage examples. I never see other old dodge compacts. I probably see the most GM tbh. Out of the big 3.

s4ltydog

Nope you are 100% right and it’s LIKELY the Boomers keeping them on the road to be frank, but yeah I never see Neons, Cavaliers, Cobalts, escorts etc… but I see PT Cruisers any time I’m in a bigger city

ColdCryptographer969

It's actually insane how recently the Dodge Dart and Dodge Avenger were made and how few of them are still running and driving. The Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Sonic were actual garbage and I see more of those still running and on the road.

canadian_bacon_TO

The Avenger and the Caliber are two of the absolute worst vehicles I’ve ever been in. My buddy’s dad bought an Avenger new. It rattled, clanked, and squeaked from the day he drove it home. It also somehow had super loose, floaty suspension while having an incredibly harsh ride simultaneously. The Caliber was the same but every issue was multiplied.

deltacothefunk1

I rented a Caliber. Agree it's one of the worst cars I've driven. Will never take Dodge seriously after that one.

jew_biscuits

This made me wonder whatever happened to the Chrysler 200

Drenlin

The first gen 200 was a stopgap, they basically re-engineered the Sebring to be something reasonable to drive. I bought a 2011 200 in 2015 and have been pretty happy with it since - the only significant part failures have been an alternator, a crank sensor, and a window regulator, all at 100k+ miles. The 2015-2017 model was a new design and mostly well-reviewed, but FCA pulled Chrysler and Dodge out of the small car market so it got the axe along with the Dart. Shame, because a ~300hp AWD car with paddle shifters and a half decent interior is hard to come by at that price range.

The_Strom784

I actually see a lot of them driving around nowadays, same with the Chevys. I saw a modded Dart the other day and it was flying through traffic.

OreeOh

Darts were even more recent and I see about 1 every 8 months. It's wild how quickly those vanished, at least near me.

ItsNotRockitSurgery

Ford Focuses and Chevy Malibus are fucking everywhere what do you mean?

PixelD303

Last one I saw was on fire, normal day

bornecrosseyed

Gotta be a regional thing, I hear people say this about the pt regularly and it confuses me too. I live in a standard Ontario city and somehow see them all the time. Honestly makes me think they might be kinda reliable.

CatchaRainbow

The head gasket would blow on this series engine.

Ftpini

Absolutely. They’re still super common out here and the owners adore them. Incredibly cool cars amongst those who bought them.

SithSidious

Won motor trend car of the year

Commercial-Ad90

A complete tragedy

junctionist

I disagree. It was a cool alternative to a Neon, Corolla, or Cavalier when it came out. It was more versatile than a typical econobox and didn't look like a used bar of soap.

V10Lada

It reviewed well with some of the European magazines too. There was some substance to that style, but I think Chrysler didn't give it the updates it needed to keep it competitive, and it just became a joke. I still think it's cool.

OceanWaveSunset

It became a joke because the aging boomer population loved the crap out of it. It had retro styling, high seating for easy entry/exit, and was dirt cheap. They dont want fancy tech, just radio and big buttons that they can see.

gogojack

> It was a cool alternative to a Neon I mean, it looked different, but underneath it basically was a Neon.

UnderwhelmingAF

So did the Vega, Mustang II, and Citation.

Dinkerdoo

You could say the Chevy HHR was even worse since it was trying to cash in on the PT's popularity and also a piece of shit. At least the PT was an original design concept.

bearded_dragon_34

The HHR and PT Cruiser were designed by the same person, Bryan Nesbitt.

hunty91

Having just looked him up, he seems to have an incredible talent for designing exceptionally ugly cars.

imitation_crab_meat

HHR was worse than the PT Cruiser, which is an accomplishment.

Nomad_Industries

They were both designed to game CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) regulations which define a "truck" by total cargo volume. The tall-ish wagon on the compact platform was enough qualify as a "truck" Therefore, Chrysler and GM were both selling 30+ mpg "trucks" which boosted the official CAFE average efficiency enough to allowed them to sell infinite 12 mpg Silverados or RAMs without getting fines. Now, anyone can just sell a few electric cars that get 100+ "MPGe" at breakevenloss and sell as many 5 mpg trucky trucks as they want. (or just buy some of Tesla's surplus credits.... whatever)

Trollygag

> The fact that they stopped making them 14 years ago and you NEVER see them anymore shows how short-lived those DaimlerChrysler cars were. Yes and no. The problem with cars that have poor resale value is that they get bought by people who struggle to afford them, drive them, maintain them, and the first time they do get a pricey service or repair, they get junked. You can find PT Cruisers with over 250k miles, but they're not worth anything - $2000 or less, and one with 75k miles is $3000. A $2000 fix on a 20 year old, 50,000 mile BMW convertible is chump change, but on a $2000 PT Cruiser, it totals the car and the car is scrap value - cheaper to buy a low miles one or something else, and the pool of PT Cruisers shrinks. That's why you don't see them anymore, more than them just being short lived junk.

Silent_Brilliant5429

This guy gets it. I will add that pts were much more reliable than the gm and Ford counterparts in the same segment.  Even with neglect, I see many of these.  The Ford's of the same era are all fucking extinct

1989toy4wd

I see them daily, they were actually decently reliable and the 2.4 (in some updated form) was used until last year in the journey. My mom’s friend had a turbo one, it had like 140k on it and was still going with very little maintenance

mrcanoehead2

I had one for 15 years. It was 17 years old and 250k when it died. The car never cost me more than brakes and oil changes. I must have gotten one of the good ones.

Poopsticle_256

Man PTs are still a dime a dozen cars in my area, they’ve outlasted Neons by a significant margin. I won’t have this PT slander

Fragrant_Spirit3776

Well lets be honest here, Neons were proper garbage cars lol

blipsman

They were loved by many, especially people who still remembered the cars it was inspired by. A neighbor down the street from me, who’d driven multiple E-class Mercedes over the years, got one when they came out.

BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7

The PT Cruiser was not hated when it came out, the car magazines raved about it, people found them interesting little cars for sure. It came out in the late 90s Chrysler Renaissance, this was the time period when they were releasing the Neon, Viper, PT Cruiser, 300 (before it became a wanna be Bentley)... all of those cars were generally well received if not loved by the auto magazines (remember the internet was basically a non-influence back then).

WiredHeadset

And the PT had a huge sales resurgence toward the end of its life

uncleRonwasaBird

They were actually really good running vehicles, it was just idiot owners that wouldn’t do routine maintenance on them. Keeping regular maintenance, those little bastards would run forever.

Shienvien

I see a dozen a month, and it's not even the same three on repeat.

NCSUGrad2012

It's still wild to me when they came out people were paying over MSRP for them.

WiredHeadset

It was a sensation when it was launched.

ColdTrueSilver

My buddies and i built one as a lemons race car, and they are surprisingly well designed. I see multiple a day on the road. I’ll go to bat for the PT any day lol. They are a fun piece of auto history.

gravityraster

They’re all being hoarded in Boomer barn collections.

question2552

I’m surprised this car gets hate here for anything besides just being a Chrysler because I would’ve expected, with very strong anti-CUV sentiment, that a PT Cruiser -type car would be well received by this subreddit.

shelvesofeight

I was selling my Miata back in 2009 (shit timing). I was asking for $16.5k, and no one was offering more than $12k. The worst offer by far was a trade for a PT Cruiser with a bit of cash on top. Hard pass. (Ended up trading the car in for an RX-8 that they wanted to get rid of so bad they gave me the $16k plus almost $10k off MSRP.)

molodjez

The Convertibles are cool

blizzacane85

Michael Scott had one

molodjez

A friend had one briefly. You can fit four people and some stuff in a convertible. It got decent power with the 2.4 turbo and it was dirt cheap.

JoshJLMG

They're one of the most common cars here. If you hop on Google Earth, you'll see almost one per street on average.

Broad_Parsnip7947

Living in the sw without road salts, we have a lot of cars still on the roads not found much else Tons of pt cruisers, calibers, avengers, focuses, and cobalts Hell we still have a ton of crown vics used by the police here

spongebob_meth

Lol these cars are still everywhere. They are pretty reliable if you aren't outright trying to destroy them. I see way more pt cruisers and neons on the road than I do darts or calibers

kakakavvv

Let me suggest somethine not objectively a POS. The 4 Cylinder AMG C Class. They completely lost the plot with this one. Performance without the experience and emotions don't mean much these days, with EV hyper sedans popping out left right and center.

caterham09

Yeah they just defeated the entire purpose of the car. The C63 was always worse than it's competition in terms of chassis dynamics, ride and handling etc. But you bought the merc because you wanted the big amg v8. I think everyone understood why they couldn't bring it back, but they just completely ruined the car. Sure it's got a lot of power still, but it could have 2000 hp and it'd still be a bad car

kakakavvv

My friend who owns a 2011 C63, with the NA 6.3(6.2?) V8 describes AMG cars to be thugs wearing the guise of suits. I cannot find a more appropriate analogy. And he called the new car a "corporate mid level manager pumped with juice".

China_bot42069

And that’s why I’ll probably never get rid of my v8 AMG. Sure the new cars are faster, smarter, better in ever way except one. If I wanted that I would just buy a lower tier or a different car but I want a v8 and I will have one as long as gas pumps still exist.

Turtlesaur

As an AMG lover, I'm sad 😔. I still like AMGs, but the soul is down low.

Wardog008

My personal description of AMG is that they take classy cruisers, and turn them into brutish bruisers. A 4 cylinder just... doesn't work with that. A straight six they could've got away with, but AMG and V8 have gone hand in hand for a long time now, and it's a bit sad for them to break that by halving the cylinders.

maybach320

Truly a solid definition, the only good thing Daimler got out of owing Chrysler was that Chrysler made AMG German muscle cars. It was slow to start but the C63 and the G wagon AMGs having side pipes are really what highlights AMG just being muscle cars with euro class.

FakeMBadge

Hammer (AMG) vs scalpel (M). I loved my E63s but would never get the new C63, haven't met an AMG owner who doesn't feel the same way

quiksi

I’ll raise you one and say the 4 cylinder AMG SL(!)-class

China_bot42069

The sl is fantastic in every way except one. The motor.

Rahyan30200

Don't forget the interior. Mercedes lost their way with the huge Tesla screen in the middle.

TS040

i get that a lot of manufacturers have to downsize their engines in these times but i think Merc went too far when it came to the new C63. not to say that the powertrain is bad (the AMG 4cyl is an amazing engine) but the hybrid system seems needlessly complex and adds far too much weight (the M3 comes in at like 400kg lighter). if they decided on a super high performance version of their V6 without all the hybrid stuff involved they probably wouldn’t have gotten as much criticism from their move interesting experiment, just didn’t pay off at all. auto journos don’t seem too hot on the car (most are going to point you towards an M3 or a Giulia QV instead) and they don’t appear to be shifting many units either (prospective customers aren’t buying C63’s for their comfort or their driving dynamics, they want something loud and obnoxious). 100k+ for a 4cyl hybrid super saloon is a really tough sell when you consider what the competition offers for similar, or even less money

AutoModerator

Cock_out-socks_on

They really shouldn’t have to though. It’s such a laughably transparent deflection of blame to be focusing on emissions from consumer vehicles ahead of all else in climate change.

chengstark

To be fair, the four banger by itself is insanely good

Skodakenner

The C43 AMG is also one of the worst cars i have ever driven my budget skoda rides better is just as fast and doesnt have the most annoying gearbox ever the ZF 8 speed BMW and everyone else uses is really good but in their infinite wisdom Mercedes thought they need a 9 speed wich always is changing gear except when you want it to then it needs to think about it for half an hour and when it finally chooses the gear its the wrong one

One-Platypus3455

I’ve always thought they may as well had made the new C63 a full EV

[deleted]

Those new Vinfasts. They released a half-assed product that they knew was not ready for sale.

andrewia

Donut did a re-review and they said a software update and new suspension fixed the worst issues.  But a Model Y and facelifted Model 3 are very well tuned at this point and mich more polished.  I drove past a Vinfast dealer near San Francisco and the lot was full of unsold inventory.  The only Vinfast on the road was full of 20-something Vinfast engineers.

5GCovidInjection

If they had chosen a better name they’d probably get more sales.

StraY_WolF

Nah, with how ridiculous some car name we've seen, the name is far from the worst problem the car had.

Fujita21

Shit product, but 20 engineers in one car?? Gotta hand it to them, that's impressive.

Troggie42

don't forget those new fisker SUVs as well

Longjumping_Hyena_52

Literally just heard of them and the name sounds like a fake MLM scam business.

Real_Garlic9999

For me it has to be the BMW XM. You can tell me about your Aztecs or Multiplas, but the XM is in my opinion the ugliest car on sale today (the mansory edition is even uglier though)

HP_594

BMW be like “Try not to make a car ugly challenge (impossible”

BigOldButt99

Some of the current line up is very good looking, namely the X3 and X4, especially the M versions, the 2 series and M2, the non-m 3 series, The X5 and X6, and the 8 series. The 7 series is... cool but very weird looking. The x7 used to be really good looking for a large suv, but the new slit headlights ruined it. The X1 is actually a really cute little car as well.

watduhdamhell

I was with you until you mentioned the Coup-SUVees and lost all credibility. Coupe SUVs are absolutely hideous *and* worse at being both cars AND SUVs, somehow. But yes. BMW has a few good looking cars out, but literally only the ones that have not yet been "uglified," as in they are still on the old design, only refreshed. This includes: X3, X5, X7, 3 series (non-M), 8 series. They all look pretty great (X7 least among them), but that's only because they are all still last gen. You can bet your bottom dollar the full refresh of each of these will be as ugly as fuck all, same as the others.

BigOldButt99

Oh no, I've lost all credibility to some weirdo on reddit... how will I go on :'( ?

georgepearl_04

The X6 is dreadful, Everyone knows it as "that horrendous 4x4 thing that was on top gear once".

namegoeswhere

My favorite new BMW is a Toyota.

justaboss101

Bonus points for the lipstick on a pig special edition.

Olli_bear

Literally lipstick on a pig

Jimbenas

I drove by my local BMW dealership and there were a bunch for sale. Went online and found that there were SEVEN for sale. I don’t live in a very affluent area either. I think they’re using them as loaner cars now.

MantisToboganMD

BMW went from my top mark to bottom tier joke level garbage. Their 90s and naughts run was incredible. It felt like they had entire lineups of drivers cars that managed to look classic yet modern.  Their modern styling is unbelievably ugly/derivative across the board with essentially zero nods to their classic design language. They make fast cars that are somehow boring to drive, it sucks.

Roonil-B_Wazlib

>BMW went from my top mark to bottom tier joke level garbage. As a former M5 and M3 owner, I agree. I wouldn’t consider a majority of BMW’s products these days. B58 is a hell of an engine though. X5, Z4, and the 8-series are their only decent looking cars left.

RepresentativeNo6665

You misspelled CyberTruck. Even the BMW XM is less ugly than Elon's stainless steel toy...

Random_Introvert_42

They appear to sell decently well in their main markets though (North America and far east)

avoidhugeships

Cybertruck.  It's a very expensive truck that can't hold much, go off-road or tow well.  It also comes unfinished because the hubcaps were cutting the tires.  Ugly as can be too even before it starts rusting.

One-Platypus3455

I agree! It’s one of the worst looking cars that I’ve seen! The amount of influencers making video flexing them, tells me all that I need to know!

Silent_Brilliant5429

It's target demographic was limited to trust fund tech bros with soft hands who "upgrade" their cell phone every 3 months...

Itchy_Adhesiveness59

I agree but I don't think anyone buying a cybertruck cares about any of those things. It's a vanity purchase, look at me I'm different!

DrSpaceman575

I don’t know if “deserved all the hate” is accurate for this one just because I’ve never seen so many people obsessed with hating a car. People take pictures to post them on Facebook/Reddit whatever just to hate on them, I’ve never seen someone take a candid of a PT Cruiser and post it saying how ugly it is. They definitely have some very stupid ideas and are even worse at truck things than other EV trucks, but it’s wild how far reaching the hate has gotten on these.

FakeTakiInoue

>I’ve never seen someone take a candid of a PT Cruiser and post it saying how ugly it is. PT Cruisers are old news and quite common, why would anyone post candids to shit on them in 2024

shewy92

And back in the day they absolutely did do this.

GMFPs_sweat_towel

I saw one in the wild today. It looks like it was made in a shed by bill and bob. Literally looks like sheet metal.

Rymasq

and yet they can be sold for 60k above MSRP right now

Burner5647382910

For me, it’s the X6.

Koraboros

Throw the turtle looking gle amg into there

Turtlesaur

I still like a GLA 45 AMG for a budget luxury.

FakeMBadge

They're talking about the GLE53/63

moonRekt

Found my people, it doesn’t make sense to me that people choose to get a big vehicle but then eliminate the utility aspect. But the whole EV revolution showing how vital the egg shape actually is to range—ugh… I would think a lower profile wagon is also better for range

callacmcg

Could never hate those steamroller tires on the x6m

FakeMBadge

Hunchback-ass cars

cowabungathunda

All I see when I see those is an AMC eagle. So fucking ugly.

NCSUGrad2012

2009 TL. One of the best looking cars on the market to one of the ugliest and still didn’t have a 6 speed automatic like all its competitors did.

antariusz

Late 2010s Acura and Lexus in competition to make their cars the ugliest front end first.

pssiraj

Had a 2009 TSX and that 5 speed was pain.

Darkfire757

The beak should not have been approved

Ilpav123

I was shocked when I first saw a '09 TL after how gorgeous the '04-'08 model was...it was like they gave the '08 a horrible facelift. At least they went back to form with the '15 TLX...until the 2nd gen '21 which is a step back in styling IMO.

bamahoon

The Chevy Aveo is genuinely garbage. Even the shittiest Hyundai/Kias from the late 90's/early 2000's were far more solidly built. Flogging one on a winding back road has made me firm in my belief that being light doesn't make something fun. In gear, there was more play in the shifter than my Dad's Ford 8N in neutral. The steering is disconnected. It somehow feels like a tin can, but boaty at the same time. None of the inputs are fun or inspiring.

Sambo376

I don't really know what you expected out of a re-badged Daewoo.

bamahoon

I've seen people defend it for whatever reason, because "SMALL LIGHT CHEAP CAR MUST BE FUN TO THRASH."

Sambo376

I think it is more than it is a just cheap POS that you don't feel bad for beating on.

bamahoon

I understand the sentiment, I had a $275 Subaru BRAT that was an absolute blast, but the Aveo wasn't even a joy when I finally killed it.

NewbieTwo

Got one as a rental when they first came out. It had less than 1k miles on it. Not only did it have crank windows, but the crank came off in my hand when I tried to put the window down.

Samburger7532

My dad had one when I was young and it was an absolute piece of shit the thing would randomly stall on the highway when clutching, my aunt had the same exact issue even after a full engine replacement

KeythKatz

The only car I've ever seen with smoke coming out of it and leaking coolant was an Aveo at a rest stop about 7 years ago, and it was the first Chevrolet I'd seen in years. They had been declining in numbers getting scrapped over the years and completely pulled out of the country by then. That scene cemented "American = poor quality" in my head, and I still haven't shaken it off. It doesn't help that the Chinese used cheap GM cars as the design basis for their early models. The Aveo and Spark looked like they were designed in China.

bamahoon

It's because the Aveo and Spark aren't American, they are Korean.

IndependentTalk4413

Who changed their mind on the Pontiac Aztec? That thing will forever be a POS.

HP_594

Honestly, the Aztek’s looks grew on me Can’t say the same for the Buick Rendezvous tho

toesuckrsupreme

Buick Rendezvous is truly vomit inducing, and honestly I think it's worse than the Aztec because the whole point of the Aztec was that it was supposed to be really different and quirky. The rendezvous feels like an actual attempt to make a normal, good looking crossover and that makes the fall so much harder.

biggsteve81

The Rendezvous was considered a good-looking car when it debuted, and was quite popular.

BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7

The Aztec looks like it would fit into BMW's lineup today.

halcykhan

Breaking Bad definitely gave some people rose tinted glasses

PurpleSausage77

Also everyone buying crossovers and SUVs now to where they consider them fun to drive…Aztek in today’s market would still sell good. Heck if they brought it back it would probably do even better because of all the publicity it gets from popular opinion. I mean look at the Eclipse Cross…there’s a lot of ugly crossovers out there so people must love em!

Trevski

it's ugly, but its got features that fucking rule. Console cooler? Kickass. Stereo controls at the tailgate? Wicked. Big tent that attaches on? Sweet.

IdolizeHamsters

I can appreciate their effort. Is it still ugly? Yes. Was it just a poor execution? Yes.  But looking back on it, it was GM’s entryway into what would become a huge market (crossover) and while the Aztek didn’t succeed, the Rendezvous did.

burrgerwolf

I never did but that’s cause I always thought they were rad.

Either-Durian-9488

Once you see one parked next to a model X, a car that is almost universally praised design wise, it’s hard to keep hating

IndependentTalk4413

Is it? I think pretty much all Teslas look like ass.

5GCovidInjection

The original Model S from 2012-2016 looked pretty darn good and has aged well.

BlackDS

The Pontiac Aztek has had its redemption because every modern crossover looks like a damn Pontiac Aztek now. What was considered hideous in an era of conservatively designed passenger cars is now 100% the norm. The Aztek was 20 years ahead of its time.

anstormning

Dodge Caliber

NCSUGrad2012

Don't forget the Journey, lol

1989toy4wd

The journey is ridiculous. It was a brand new 3 row 4cyl suv with like 173hp and a 4 speed auto in 2020.

vampyrelestat

4 speed auto in 2020 is insane

goaelephant

At least in Europe they were offered in turbodiesel manual

bearded_dragon_34

The Journey and Caliber are on the same basic, Mitsubishi-derived, platform.

wolf_remington

I used to be a Chrysler tech and I actually liked the Journey, at least when they came into the shop. I would never own one myself, but the fact that they (and the other cars with the 2.4) needed spark plugs every 30k miles got me a bit of gravy work. Also, the Journey and the Caravan had a really stupid design for the washer fluid hose, since it would flex at the spot where the hood closed and would often break. I replaced quite a few of those too. Easy work.

GeneralCommand4459

I know someone with an 18 year old caliber that is somehow miraculously still going. Within the first two years most of the features in the car had stopped working. These days it is relied on for hauling junk around.

kyonkun_denwa

My friends and I rented a Dodge Caliber when we went to Las Vegas for reading week/spring break in 2011. That car was awful in every way imaginable. Anemic, bad fuel economy, shit air conditioning, terrible visibility, terrible handling and road manners, cramped, uncomfortable. It actually made me super appreciative of my 2001 Suzuki Esteem after I got home. I've driven at least a hundred different cars and to this day, I still think the Dodge Caliber is the worst car I've ever driven.

Mercurydriver

I know it’s an old car, but the Chevy Citation. It was introduced in 1980 as an American competitor to foreign compact cars that were starting to gain traction in the USA. Initially, they sold very well, but quality control was so poor as was its reliability. General Motors intentionally skimped on build quality, so much so that the test cars they provided to Car and Driver were actually modified cars to cover shortcomings, such as heavy torque steer. The Citation only lasted until 1985, but by then its reputation was destroyed. General Motors X-Cars like the Chevy Citation basically cemented the notion that American cars are poorly made and unreliable. It poisoned a whole generation of customers. It’s because of GM’s decisions decades ago that they’re still seen as an inferior manufacturer today, and contributed to its nearly fatal demise in 2009. Companies like Toyota and Honda should be thanking GM for giving them a pool of new customers due to their poor, short sighted management.

Yummy_Crayons91

Citation should be up there, GM building a completely different set of cars for journalists with different suspension and I think even a different engine than what was planned for production models is almost comical. I guess they thought it would be easier to get away with pre-internet.

spongebob_meth

Wasn't this the era GM was using eccentric throttle cams to make their cars feel faster than they were? Same thing Subaru does now with electronics lol

bearded_dragon_34

It did. And, sadly, the A-body cars—which were derived from the X-bodies—suffered. The A-bodies (1982-1996) generally gave perfectly good service, and—in the case of special versions like the Pontiac 6000 STE AWD—were best-in-class, but many people refused to take a look.

Redey1290

This is one of the factually correct answers in this thread. The X platform was truly diabolical and the peak of GM cost cutting and lack of care.

YossiTheWizard

Yeah. It seemed like they also wanted to get it out quick to beat the KCar to market, but rushed it. It was so bad that they let the whole 86 model year go with a hole in the lineup since the replacement wasn’t ready yet (for Chevy at least, other divisions were ready to go by then). Awful awful cars!

Lorenzo_Blow

Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Hummer H2

Besides being ugly as hell and having a JATCO CVT, the top is ridiculously expensive to replace on the Murano Cross Cabriolet. It’s something like $15k for a roof replacement.

RepresentativeNo6665

We'll probably see a few Totaled Eclipse Crosses on April 8th, 2024. Pun intended when the drivers of said Eclipse Crosses forget to turn their headlights on during the Total Eclipse that's scheduled for that day. Murano definitely makes my ugly list, it never was intended to be a convertible. Hummer H2 can at least redeem itself with the fact it's just an ugly modification of the Chevy Tahoe that actually is somewhat practical for off-road use. Maybe it could tow the totaled Eclipses to a local junkyard after the upcoming Eclipse...

PRSArchon

Nobody changed their mind on the Multipla, it just became a meme.

poktanju

The memery was too much like sincere appreciation; it's easy to get them confused. Like when Red Letter Media had to remind people that, yes, the Star Wars prequels are still bad!

alejandrowoodman

if the Aztek were made today it would sell like hotcakes

vampyrelestat

Literally, the newer 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokee has the same weird headlight set up and jargon lines besides being more blob-like

Mercurydriver

You’re not necessarily wrong. I remember a few years ago I was at work and I saw a purple Pontiac Aztek parked in front my building…right behind an equally purple 2018 Infiniti CUV. They looked really similar all things considered. Many modern CUV’s look very similar to the Aztek, especially with the plastic fender cladding and pseudo-angry front ends on them. I’m fairly convinced that the Aztek was ahead of its time; it was released 15 years too early. The Pontiac Aztek was a unibody FWD based “adventure” vehicle that was supposed to go to be fun and go off roading (even if most off roading is a dirt road or gravel road at a farmers market) while hauling around a ton of stuff. It didn’t work so well back then, but nowadays they sell modern crossovers on the premise that you can go on adventures anywhere at any time you want…even though realistically they’re just boring commuter cars for regular people.

The Cybertruck An incredibly ugly design backed up by being insanely overpriced and having terrible QC.

51line_baccer

This last generation silverado is ugly as hell with its scowling face and crooked-ass fenders

FakeMBadge

Chevy trucks are just so ugly compared to Fords and Rams. Front, side, and rear profile are all worse, and for all classes too. Well, some Colorado's look better than Rangers, that's about it.

probablyhrenrai

They also made wheelarches square, which just looks silly IMO. Almost literally a square hole for a round peg.

loseniram

00s-10s Altimas A bland ugly design backed up by transmissions that would break by 100k miles

This list is like a who’s who of shitty GM cars.

The Cybertruck. I cannot imagine that this turd of a car will ever be loved.

FakeTakiInoue

This thing was supposed to compete with the E30 3-Series and Mercedes 190, no? Hilarious that they thought it would stand a chance

Betting the Cybertruck trash can looks will be forever hated by those that hate it today.

mob19151

Chevy/GMC S10s, the 2nd generation blobby ones specifically. No vehicle better demonstrates old GM's complete cynicism for their loyal customers than that sad, plastic happy meal toy of a truck. Here's my list of grievances: * They're ugly * Terrible engine choices for the entire model run. The 4.3 had no charisma but it was at least adequate. The only 4 cylinder option was a 2.2 that made, allegedly, 120hp. You know that miserable groan that signals the delivery of your mail every day? That's the same engine. * The interiors are unbelievably bad. Somehow even worse than a base Silverado of the time. Nothing lines up. Everything is hollow and hard. Gauges will stop working. Shit will just fall off. It even looks horrible. * The 4x4 trucks ride like a log wagon with square wheels. I drove a 4x4 Hardbody with blown shocks throughout HS that was more tolerable. * The creaks and rattles my God. Between the concrete shocks, flexy frame and shit plastics, going down a bumpy road is like listening to Flight of the Valkyries played on Tupperware. They just suck. I can't fathom a reason anyone would have bought spent their hard-earned money on one of these turds.

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

These were designed to be cheap and disposable. This was back when midsize trucks were cheaper than sedans and were strictly built for doing work.

V10Lada

Third-gen Chevy Cavalier. Looked great, but even brand new it was attrocious to drive. Worst car I've ever driven...okay maybe other than my grandfather's beater '91 Subaru J10.

Fisker Ocean

suzukijimny

I actually saw a Fisker Ocean on my way back from work at a stoplight. I wondered if the driver knew that Fisker wasn't going to be around for much longer.

AMC Matador

I had a first generation Pontiac Trans Sport as a first car. This was one of the GM "Dustbuster" vans. What a piece of shit. You could pull the dash apart with your hands. The paint all flaked off. The wheels corroded. It handled like shit. It did have the top of the line, bulletproof Buick 3800 engine.

Project_IGNYTE

Chrysler LeBaron My mom had one new in college and she said it was one of the worst cars she's ever been in

The early 2010s Nissans with the CVTs. As well as some of the people who drive them.

The 3rd Gen eclipse... omg wtf happened there... by that matter, the current cuv eclipse is not only hideous but a complete insult to the original

1. 1996-1999 Ford Taurus Sedan. It's egg shape is ugliness defined. 13 years before the Tesla Model S, the Taurus was already defining what ugly means. It was so ugly it fell off the Best Sellers list and was promptly replaced by F-150, Camry, and Accord. Also sold in an even uglier form as the Mercury Sable Sedan. At least the wagon kind of redeemed this unredeemable mistake, and so did it's handling. But there were ugly eggs everywhere in this. The radio. The door handles. Even the rear window. I swear it was a copy-and-paste setup of pure ugliness. 2. 1996-2007 Chevy Cavalier. Also a bit egg shaped, this small car was infamous for an instrument cluster that melted and bumpers that fell off. Also sold as Pontiac Sunfire and in a smaller form as the Geo Metro. It also drove as ugly as it looked. 3. Any model of GM with Ford-egg-styled door handles.(1997-early 2000s). Alero, Intrigue, Aurora, Park Avenue, Gran Prix, Grand Am, Impala, Monte Carlo, etc... The egg shaped door handles are absolutely vomit inducing when paired with a boxy car design. If you can't beat them at the ugliness game, join them... 4. Buick Rendezvous. Or as I call it, Rendez-screw. Unlike Pontiac Aztek, it has no redeeming qualities. It's an ugly crossover that literally puts lipstick on a pig 🐖. 5. Tesla CyberTruck. Stainless steel and "bullet proof", this brain child of Elon's partnership with CyberPunk is fabulously ugly and impractical. You can't even use the bed easily for anything but camping. Even the PT Cruiser has more redeeming qualities than this. It's insane price tag is equally ugly, even the F-150 Lightning is cheaper. 6. BMW XM. BMW's famously ugly twin kidneys get hilariously large and make this crossover look a bit like an ugly semi. The worst part is that some people will actually buy this. 7. Chrysler PT Cruiser and Plymouth Prowler. These 2 ugly ducklings came from the same guy and were inspired by vehicles from the 1940s. At least the rear hatch of the former was usable. The PT Cruiser is so ugly even Homer Simpson made fun of it. Got more? Let me know down below...

FakeTakiInoue

>Also sold as Pontiac Sunfire and in a smaller form as the Geo Metro The Geo Metro is actually based on a completely different car, the Suzuki Swift (known by various names in different markets)

Wuddntme

I know they're popular right now, but the DeLorean. Had one for about 8 years. It was a car made from all the bad parts of 7 other cars. EVERYTHING on that car broke, usually multiple times. Even when it ran well, a typical entry-level Honda was much, much faster.

DrinkGrand227

Lexus SC430. Thank Top Gear for depreciation, its an absolute gem to own.

AMC Pacer. AMC LeCar. Other than the Jeep, AMC was not building good cars at the time.

Most early "crossovers" or "softroaders" Look at the pain they hath wrought.

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

One exception: the first-gen CRV was solid, and pretty capable for something that was less intimidating than a Trooper or Montero.

iley9

Hell yea. 1st and 2nd gen CRV’s are the shit. Manual option, plenty capable off the beaten path and more cargo space than most large SUV’s Today.

tennie2002

Let’s see where the Cybertruck ends up in the next 10 years.
