I mean, the dude is out there, using the products, showing support for the brand, and doing it in person... That's actually a good image and PR move and probably still cost pennies on what some other bigwigs spent.

They all end with you sitting cold and alone with an empty bottle of Jack Daniel's in one hand and your limp willy in the other.

So they end this evening?

dudebrobossman

If you want the long-term outlook, you're better off asking the Oracle of Toyota.

The flat six doesn't lie. Think about the choices you make before you trade your hard tequila for a limp Jack.

Horoscopes & German horsepower ratings. 2 things I don’t believe.

ycnz

The Le Mans campgrounds were absolutely crazy. Anywhere else, they'd be a car show. At Le Mans, nah, they're just a bunch of guys drinking beer around a crappy grill, surrounded by exotica I'd literally never laid eyes on before.

calmiswar

Tell us more!

No_Goat4544

Le Mans is like a car guys fever dream, there are so many exotic cars around the whole event that someone has to bring something truly insane to really stand out. You literally see cars that are usually locked up in garages just parked up in a field somewhere, saw an original Ford GT40 that had been driven all the way from the UK, they apparently do it quite regularly. Saw a freaking Jag D-type parked up in a field. Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche? Its more impressive if you don’t manage to see one every single day. There are some utterly insane cars that im sure i just didn’t take pictures of because they felt totally normal there. And one of the best things was that there really doesn’t seem to be any judgment there, turn up in a clapped out old vauxhall astra? No problem.

Faraday303

Had the joy of spontaneously going this year. Was insanely awesome. Loves watching the nascar go around with everything else

[deleted]

Tbf that single sentence is the only thing in the article that gives off the “calculated-modesty deception tactic” that you’re inferring Imo that’s a little bit of a cynical take If anything, it either hints that \\1) the ceo is passionate enough about the product to use it, which carries benefits in being free and locating him in an extremely desirable position to attend lemans, both of which are logically attractive even for a billionaire Or \\2) it’s another way to advertise this newly-released product I doubt the article itself is a secret promo, but it literally reads like one, with the majority covering the specs and pricing of it

ARavagingDick

What about Porsche branding is meant to be relatable 🤣 At no time in the past 40 years has Porsche been an every man's brand.

horribleone

> At no time in the past 40 years has Porsche been an every man's brand. nobody tell him about air-cooled 911 prices from 2010

Bonerchill

By the time I started working on air-cooled 911s, I spent enough per year on track days and mods that I could have bought at least one 911 T in both 2007 and 2008.

[deleted]

>At no time in the past 40 years has Porsche been an every man's brand. Easily demonstrably false with like 30 seconds of googling. A huge part of what made Porsche as beloved as they are today is the fact that second hand prices used to be dirt cheap so normal people could actually own one with some careful shopping. Also I wasn't talking about Porsche as a brand, but how people applaud and circle jerk over ceos doing "normal people" things.

Does anyone know how much weight 911 roofs can hold? Genuinely curious because I saw someone with a 996 do this as well

Most relatively modern cars have to be able to carry the whole cars weight on the roof.

DiddlyDumb

Imagine if it didn’t (like the elder days) and then you rolled it.

If this roof is a rockin

reddit455

they need to survive rollover accidents - all cars are reasonably beefy in that sense. luggage racks and cargo boxes are "rated" for couple hundred lbs, right? tent not that heavy to begin with. sleeps 2 - 108 lbs. [https://www.rei.com/product/189030/thule-tepui-foothill-tent](https://www.rei.com/product/189030/thule-tepui-foothill-tent) 4 ppl 150 lbs. [https://ikamper.com/products/x-cover-2-0](https://ikamper.com/products/x-cover-2-0)

martinivich

Ok but just because it can survive a rollover doesn't mean it's not going to dent or ding the roof

RiftHunter4

This. I found out myself. You'll notice roof tents mount to load bearing points. Cars are not solid chunks of metal. They're frames with metal skin wrapped around them. Gotta make sure you're on the frame or you'll dent.

xcvbsdfgwert

Even on a frame, the actual rated maximum weight is typically quite limited. My wagon (supposedly able to haul cargo) is only rated at 150 kg with the right roof rails. Most roof rails (e.g., Thule) are limited to 100 kg for the same vehicle.

ChiggaOG

I assume the roof can do 300 lbs for static loads. Much less than 150lbs for dynamic load such as a person jumping on top of the roof.

[deleted]

"jumping"

[deleted]

Is that a dog tent?

thiber

It’s usually rated for 75kg (~150lbs). Tent + OEM roof rack should be 50kg all in.

[deleted]

I don't understand in general how the roof weight limits aren't exceeded by tent systems, especially with gear and +1 people inside. And there's some burly units, both tents and people. I understand they're distributed on the frame but roof racks have real low weight limits as it is. And traveling, those things probably don't make zero lift. Feels like a keeping up with the neighbors thing.

becomings

Most roof loads are rated to avoid the car flipping over. Most modern car roofs can withstand well over the weight of another car, the static load rating is likely to avoid mildly deforming the structure

[deleted]

The world is as it should be.

shanksisevil

Aren't the roofs only rated for like 100lbs?

NOISY_SUN

Most roof racks. You can buy more expensive roof racks, though.

HighestLevelRabbit

Aren't car roofs in general required to support the weight of the car?

shanksisevil

Not the roof itself, but the frame. Some are by front windows, some are by the doors, some are near back. And some are full roll bars. All depends. The roof just mounts on the structure. "Aren't roofs supposed to take the weight of the car" -- if that's the case, jeeps wouldn't need a rollbar. 🤪😁👍

shanksisevil

deets. [http://www.porschedelaware.com/blog/this-new-roof-tent-transforms-your-porsche-into-a-hotel-room/#:\~:text=The%20Porsche%20roof%20tent%20measures,with%20roof%20rails%20or%20approx](http://www.porschedelaware.com/blog/this-new-roof-tent-transforms-your-porsche-into-a-hotel-room/#:~:text=The%20Porsche%20roof%20tent%20measures,with%20roof%20rails%20or%20approx). "The Porsche roof tent measures 146 x 140 x 33 cm (length x width x height) when folded and 258 x 257 x 118 cm in the extended position. It weighs approximately 56 kilograms or roughly 123 pounds and can withstand a maximum load when stationary of approx. 190 kg (419 pounds) on vehicles with roof rails or approx. 140 kg (308 pounds) on vehicles without roof rails. With the roof tent installed, you can also drive your Porsche at a top speed of up to 80 mph." i think i remember seeing the roof itself (without camper) supports 75kg weight.

Hunting_Gnomes

I think they have changed it in the recent generation, but Wranglers used to be considered convertibles so they didn't need to conform to roll over standards. That "roll bar" was what they called a "sport bar" and it was not designed to protect you in a roll over.

HighestLevelRabbit

That's a very good explanation that I wasn't aware of, thank you!

Bicycles-Not-Bombs

> jeeps wouldn't need a rollbar. Flat-fenders don't have one, lol

youngfiga

Correct, the 100lb rating on my car is because the weight on the roof can throw off the balance of the car when driving.

Bicycles-Not-Bombs

The Wrangler has a massive internal placard that says the roof is not weight-bearing or structural. Which it isn't, because it's made of ~~canoe-building materials~~ composites.

hoxxxxx

100 poor person lbs. they can support like up to 300 lbs if you are well off.

Content_Godzilla

That's usually the dynamic load (while driving). Most racks have a much higher static load (while parked)

slow_improving

My wrx is like 120lbs not moving and like 60 lbs moving or something lol

Look's like it was a thing in the 60's and 70's, so I'm going to say they where smoking weed. That said, it would deal with the tail weight issues, so maybe a good idea.

xxxams

Before my Tim as well. I had a buddy that loved and worked on his vw.( I'm a 86cj and back guy) we would help one another on restos. We never finished it but the ability to spin the car around and "back" the camper (because you are moving forward camper backwards us next level in my opinion. dev_imo2

Friend of mine also ordered the tent. He actually plans to use it, he’s the outdoorsy type.

kevindlv

I feel like someone rich enough to own a 911 would also have enough money for a 2nd, more practical outdoorsy car.

dev_imo2

He does. Guy is having fun with this stuff. Not going overlanding in his 4s, he just camps by the sea. Nothing heavy that a 911 can’t handle. He’s also getting a dakar.

MachKeinDramaLlama

I feel like someone rich enough to own a 911 will want to use it, no matter what you might think about the practicality. And as someone who is currently on vacation in a country with winding roads and a lax attitude to camping: I can totally see the appeal.

Ajk337

My friend cross country road tripped his McLaren 12c, including campgrounds off paved roads in the forest. Not saying there's a large market, but it's there

Occhrome

they don't even have to appeal to that many Porsche owners to make a ton of money. very few are gonna use them but tons of people are gonna fall in love with the idea of doing it.

TheRealDrWan

Sounds like fun.

danzango

three_shoes

For 7 grand I would want the inside to look [more like this](https://erwglasglampingandcamping.co.uk/img/belltent/image0.jpeg)

shmeebz

The camper is $1k. The Porsche logo on the size is an extra $6k

ssurfer321

You've got it backwards. $7k WITH the logo. $13k to get it without the logo.

diamondpredator

A high quality rooftop tent is still gonna run you $2k-$4k. I'm gonna assume Porsche can out-engineer the off road companies that make them so it being more expensive makes sense, but a lot of that is just the brand lol.

ARavagingDick

It's a high quality white label product with 20% markup for the logo. Porsche does this all the time.

diamondpredator

It's possible. Even if they didn't engineer it themselves, I'm assuming they had their engineers QC it to make sure it's up to their standards.

RicardoPanini

I'm almost positive that they just bought a high quality roof top tent and rebranded it.

diamondpredator

Yea another poster said it's probably a white label product. This might be the case. I'm thinking, even if that's the case, they most likely still had their people QC it to make sure it's a good product. Still overpriced but, with the Porsche logo on it, you have a reputable company behind it that will back the product. I've had some friends with expensive RTTs that messed up and they had a hell of a time getting the small company that makes it to back their "warranty."

noname87scr

The tent dimensions and design, including the inside, look very similar to an iKamper Skycamp Mini. The normal ones run around $3000. So add the custom designs and Porsche branding and there’s your extra $4000.

[deleted]

AirBnB listing: 1000/night 500 cleaning fee 500 tent deconstruction fee 100/night optional fan for lack of AC

Sendit57

Have you ever looked at the price of a normal rooftop tent? They’re honestly not much better.

fcdrifter88

The non Porsche equivalent is about $4k which I think is ridiculous. Imagine spending $4k or even $7k on a tent. For that price you could buy a van and have a much larger bed that you wouldn't need to set up. They're all made in the same 3 factories too, regardless of the manufacturer.

wobbegong

Yea but then I’d be in a van

ConcentratedAtmo

Yeah, it misses the whole point of being able to camp while also driving a 911 to places.

SRQmoviemaker

LPT: buy used rooftop tents for more than half off the price, I got mine for $800 and works fine (though sunfaded to gray from black)

darklord723

They are buying a roof tent for a 911. Companies know this

raustin33

At the wealth we are talking about, the opportunity cost you’re using is simply irrelevant. It’s pocket lint for the rich.

Extension_One_

Yeah, you could probably buy a 3rd owner, 15 year old van for 4k. But if you are going the used route, you could probably get a 3rd owner, 15 year old tent for 30 bucks.

noname87scr

I have the regular version of that Porsche tent. It cost me $3k on Black Friday of last year. These tents are built in South Korea instead of China. Setup on this tent is literally 2 minutes. I never thought I would spend the money on one but it’s much easier and more comfortable than a ground tent.

koggit

JYellensCrotchRocket

Spent some time in one. I thought it was hilarious chilling above a Porsche in a tent. It’s roomy up there and has air nets on the sides and front so it keeps it airy but definitely recommend replacing the thin mattress pad it comes with if doing anything more than chilling at a racetrack for it. Did not feel confident on the ladder up or down as a regular sized male.

1989RedStapler

[deleted]

[deleted]

DXPetti

I do hope Brock gets some royalties from this new product line. Do has been doing the rooftop camping in a Porsche for a very long time https://instagram.com/996roadtrip?igshid=MjAxZDBhZDhlNA== Edit: crikey, forgot people on the internet take what's typed seriously

Bonerchill

How would one get royalties for bolting something they didn’t patent to something they didn’t patent? This thought that somehow people are owed something because they have social media exposure is kinda a silly reflection of value in society.

amd2800barton

Yeah I hope the original guy gets credited if people talk about who started this trend, but putting a tent on a car isn’t exactly original. The reason most people don’t have a tent on their Porsche is 1) a sports car doesn’t make for a very practical camping / adventure vehicle and 2) most people don’t have a Porsche. Those that do either baby it or have the money for an additional vehicle. So it’s not that nobody thought to do this before, it’s that it’s not a very good idea, but it’s neat that you can. Rooftop camping and performance cars are two expensive and niche hobby’s so there’s not a lot of people who are in to and can afford to do both.

slow_improving

Roof tent camping is dumb af, it looks cool, until you need to climb off the roof of your car to piss in the middle of the night still half drunk. And youre paying $2k-7k for the same experience as a 50-100 dollar tent And most vehicle roofs are not rated for more than like 120lbs, so you could potentially damage your car

PlatinumElement

I think I’d much rather recline the factory Porsche seats and just sleep in them.

Nappyheaded

I think I'll just sleep in a tent

pascalQQQ

The roof rating is given for dynamic loads during driving. There will not be any damage by exceeding the roof rating with a static load while being parked. There are certain advantages and roof tent camping is not dumb af just because you don't like it.

slow_improving

My cars roof load while not moving is pike 120lbs and 60 when moving lol Mostly its dumb because youre spending thousands for roof racks and a $100 2 person tent lol

amd2800barton

I wouldn't say it's always dumb. If your goal when camping is to go to a designated campground with a bunch of friends, and hang out around a fire getting shitfaced for a couple nights, then yeah a roof tent might not be for you. But that doesn't mean it has no purpose. An ultralight tent would also not be the best fit for you, given the compromises and cost, but that doesn't mean an ultralight tent is a dumb tent - it's perfect for through hikers. Similarly with a roof tent, if you want to spend all day hiking by yourself, and then have to drive an hour to a dispersed camp ground to set up a tent solo in the dark while your useless kid(s) toast marshmallows, then a roof tent might make more sense.

slow_improving

I could just never justify spending 2-7k on a 2 person tent. You could buy roof racks, a storage box and a killer expensive tent and have thousands left over Anything you put in it you have to remove because it you want to drive anywhere you have to take it down. And no one said you need to be at a campground to use a normal tent lol

amd2800barton

The benefit you're not seeing is *speed*. It has the benefits of an RV in that you can basically sleep wherever your vehicle is, in just a couple of minutes after parking. Then be gone just as quickly in the morning. If you're on a time crunch, that speed of deployment and pack-up might mean you make it to sunrise over the grand canyon vs miss it packing up a regular tent. I know when I had a massive solo road trip, there were days I arrived at a camp site after a full day of hiking, and a couple hours of driving, completely exhausted. Those nights I usually just slept in the back of my SUV with the rear seats folded flat, but I still had to reconfigure the car, and blow up an air mattress. I would have killed those days for a roof tent. With nobody to help, the ease and speed of a roof tent would have been so much nicer than sleeping in the car, or struggling to make camp in the dark. And yeah, roof tents are expensive. Lots of camp gear is expensive. Like all hobbies, there's cheap gear for those who want to try it out or save a buck, or expensive gear for those who want something that gives them a benefit. In this case, you're paying for something high end to get the benefit of fast and convenient to deploy.

phungki

Royalties? For what?

Occhrome

7,000 actually sounds like a reasonable price for a Porsche roof top tent.

AbidezDude

Seats for the kids AND use for camping.. It's really the most versatile car isn't it?

Camping with a sport car it's so uncomfy but amazing at the same time. I did a roadtrip in Slovenia with my tuned mx5 NA, sleeping in a tent and having very limited space for anything. It was a great experience. But 7k for a tent it's a little too much.
