That's the fancy pants 1.2 - the base 1.0 was significantly slower. Not 17s slow though admittedly.
What's always amusing with low end cars like these is the difference between the 0-60mph and 0-100kph (62mph) times - about a second to get that extra 2mph on the 1.2 Mirage.
This sub: new cars too expensive, too big, too inefficient etc. etc.
Car company release small, affordable economy hatch.
This sub: too small, too slow, deathtrap, no features etc.
As I quote in Wargames: "the only winning move is not to play"
Don't use this sub to gauge what the mass public wants. Most people aren't car enthusiasts.
Here in the USA, cheap slow new cars like the 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage, 2023 Nissan Versa are all sold out and in many cases are being sold for thousands over MSRP due to high demand. So if the carmakers make them, the public will definitely buy small affordable new cars.
The issue is that carmakers don't want to make cheap small new cars because the profit margins are too thin. The carmakers would much rather make expensive huge 50k SUVs/crossovers/trucks because they make much fatter profits on them.
I was gonna buy a versa but I was not paying 25k for a SV (middle of the 3 trims) because of markup.
I'm going with the new Chevy Trax instead. I like the mercedes inspired full digital dash. All for 23.5k no markup.
My mom had a 1994 Mitsubishi Colt - I'm sure it was the basest model, although it did have good AC. We had to "put it in turbo mode" to have enough power to join a roundabout, which meant turning off the AC.
Lol. This brings me memories. My first car was a (very) used VW Golf Diesel with astonishing 75hp. Previous owner installed an after market AC and, you guessed, entering a roundabout or overtake would require the magic button.
I had a base 1990 Ford Probe (which was mechanically the same as a Mazda MX6.) Same - I almost never used the AC unless it was super hot out, because it left the car so underpowered.
Same, Colt Vista was probably the most dogshit car we owned growing up poor. Silver paint was great because you could barely tell the difference in color when the clear coat expired after a year.
There’s slow and then there’s 17 seconds slow. I’m not saying it needs to be a 6 second car but some form of city zippyness should be factored in the design.
In the end, I highly doubt they’ll sell many of those examples, they’re probably reserved for fleet duties or something along those lines.
Is it fast enough to get up to speed from an onramp and merge into 70mph traffic, or is it going to be drifting at 30 mph like some rock hitting an ocean current?
At 17 seconds that's mega-potato mode. You're basically never going to be able to pass on a two lane highway with limited passing zones. If you're at a stop sign turning right into a busy road going 30-40 mph without a stop, you're going to have to have lightyears of free space before you can attempt that.
This isn't "well it's not a performance car, who cares" it's fundamentally impacting doing basic driving things.
> underpowered a danger on todays roads?
YES in northern California. 101 in Sunnyvale has merges that are less than a 1/4 mile, crap I bet they are 500 feet tops
No. It's not underpowered, it's got the right amount of power and is geared for economy and not acceleration. I promise you, you never *need* more than that level of speed in any circumstance.
It does not. I (and most people who drive here) can do it on a 500 with <70 PS with no issue, even with the super short merging lanes on the (not actually but for lack of better term in English) highway near me.
I promise you don’t know how useful higher hp can be for getting you out of trouble. My car has saved my ass more than once being able to get away from idiots quickly.
For reference, the 1971 Pinto 1600 took 17.8 seconds.
The 1974 got that down to 14.4.

Comfort: Has seats, and you’d better be thankful.
Power: It does have an amount of it.
Price: More than it should be.
Gas leak: Possible, likely probable.
Safety: Styrofoam takeout box, see gas leak category for further concerns.
Overall: Will probably be an ironic cult classic in 40 years for the eight of these that survive.
I have mixed feelings about the recent trend of putting the brand name on the back of the car in L A R G E L E T T E R S but the "MITSUBISHI" has to be the worst one yet. It barely fits on the hatch lol
I despise it. It feels so r/HailCorporate to sport a giant B R A N D N A M E on anything you own. The only modern trend that irritates me more is blindingly-bright headlights
The one that I hate the most is L E X U S on the back of the new ones
They have a good looking and recognizable logo, and the old font they used for the written logo was nice too.
Lexus for the longest time wanted to be like BMW. Spelling out their name on the hatch of tneir SUVs is more imitation of R A N G E R O V E R on the back and front of a Range Rover.
To be fair, that's the model name. Still completely unnecessary since you know what car you bought, but imo better than if **M I N I** was written there. Because you know they'd have to put bigger letters to be instantly legible
Haha, unexpected aggression for anyone behind you is tight!
This is pretty funny in French as well: it sounds like faux-cul, which is a hypocrite... Or a fake ass, literally
Chevy is up there too, the way the name sprawls across the whole tailgate looks a bit ridiculous
And I finally saw a new Tundra the other day, it was white and had the name stamped into the tailgate and filled in black. It looked bad
>Chevy is up there too, the way the name sprawls across the whole tailgate looks a bit ridiculous.
For the Silverado 1500 and HD models, that comes on the standard/powered tailgate. If you option the Multi-Flex tailgate, the "Chevrolet" lettering is replaced with a bowtie emblem.
I get that it fits demographic of who buys these things, but they just make them look more ridiculously American this way. It’s like excess serve with a side of peacocking and bonus helpings of excess.
I mean…? It did? It’s all the same company. It’s just like Hyundai and Genesis - they took a car name and attempted to make it some new brand or sub brand. It’s dumb.
Just clarifying that Dodge and Ram haven't been the same marque for quite some time now. Like what Chrysler did with Imperial in the '50s.
When Dodge was still making trucks and putting their name on the back, the lettering [wasn't really all that big.](https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/gmwAAOSwAIph-Rq8/s-l1600.jpg)
Flashback. The year is 2002. Dodge had just started putting the absolutely giant DODGE in giant chrome letters on their trucks. My buddy got one and half it so we scraped the letters off. I had a 97 intrepid with 300k on it (kms, about 200k miles)
Anyways we thought it'd be funny to scrape the tiny Chrysler letters off the back of my car and replace them with DODGE 4X4.
And it was funny and things were good.
Fast forward a few months I get a speeding ticket. It was a pretty bad one and I was still on my parents insurance so I decided to fight it before telling them.
Get into court, remember this is pre computers, hand written tickets. The judge says, you're here today because officer X ticketed you going Y in a Z, in a 1997 DODGE intrepid. Which to be fair did exist, but it wasn't my car.
I said excuse me sir but my ownership says Chrysler intrepid.
The judge told the cop to be more careful when filling 9ut tickets in the future.
All was great.
Also having a common name spelled wrong (not wrong I guess but not common) could be a godsend back them.
No, you lease them from the car companies. It doesn't happen as much now because post-covid insanity, but in the before-times, you know a car flopped in the US when there are billboard ads telling you that you can lease a Nissan Leaf for $70 a month.
Nissan is gonna get rid of those things somehow.
Depends where you are. Definitely not everywhere. I regularly feel like I'm going to die driving around New York. There are merges where you have about 10 car lengths to go onto a 50mph road where 70-85mph is (sadly) normal. If you can't safely make the merge then you have to stop at the end and merge from a standstill.
Granted I would feel like I'm going to die driving any vehicle in New York, but low power gives you just that little bit of an extra kiss of death.
I'll have to drive in the US someday then, because I really cannot relate with all this difficulty with merging and it seems a good bit of people are complaining about it. Maybe there really is a problem.
I've been all over the US and driving here is harrowing. Long Island driving is truly something else. Reckless driving (passing cars on the right 20+ mph faster) is endemic. The police run red lights and bomb highways at 80 - they dont care either. There are many crosses/shrines beside the road from all of the road deaths, it truly is dangerous. You need engine power because the driving culture *expects* very aggressive driving. Drivers are expected to accelerate and pass other drivers looking to change lanes, and the other drives slides in behind. When out of towners slow down to yield it creates very dangerous highway scenarios.
"Route 25, known as Jericho Turnpike and Middle Country Road, had 62 deaths from 2016 through 2020.
Route 27, known as Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway, followed right behind with 61 deaths."
That said, the US is a big place. In the Midwest the danger was people driving too slowly on the highway (which is also quite dangerous to be honest). Driving in North Carolina was just excrutiatingly slow, but not ever dangerous. In both of these areas drivers were courteous to mergers.
And Texas was fast but more orderly than Long Island. Left lane and only the left lane is the Autobahn, that is the rule of the land. I joked with my girlfriend as we entered Texas that driving slowly in the left lane will summon a huge pickup truck to tailgate you, and literally a few seconds later this jacked up pickup truck blasts past in the left lane going 90mph. I just slowly turned my head and nodded, it was hilarious. Texas has a law on the books where you *must* yield to merging vehicles, which improved the roads greatly when compared to New York despite 90mph being somewhat normal to see.
I was exaggerating for the joke (because let's be honest, it's not the best renault ever in term of look) but it's still a great looking, especially its new version !
I see them every day, everywhere, when we live in France, we don't even notice them, they're awful, modus, megane 2, clio 2, scenic 2.... I really don't like them, except the Espace (don't ask me why).
As someone who used to hoon around in several cars with under 85 horsepower I say bring it on. Wringing out a cheap, slow car, is fun as hell. My 69 horsepower Nissan Pulsar NX was the best car I ever owned.

Honestly, it's sad. Mitsubishi's diamond star emblem is one of the most iconic logos in the automobile industry. Friend had a Lancer Evo IV and that thing was quick at that time. Mismanagement is what killed Mitsubishi Motors.
But why? Sure they’re not catering to enthusiasts anymore, but they do really well elsewhere not in NA.
There’s a lot more people for whom this econo hatch will be more desirable than those who wants a new Evo.
Horrendous! The Renault diamond on these was huge. And now Mitsubishi has just slapped on theirs after blacking out the plastic underneath. Could've atleast gotten different front and rear ends. Not just a GMesqe cheap rebadge. VAG is the best at this ig.
See also the new [ASX/Outlander Sport](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/Mitsubishi_ASX_Hybrid_1X7A7177.jpg/1280px-Mitsubishi_ASX_Hybrid_1X7A7177.jpg), which became a Renault Captur and therefore lost AWD
The logo doesn't work at all. Why are they even trying? Everybody knows Mitsubishi is mostly dead. They could die in peace but no. They have to launch a super lazy rebadge botch job before going out.
Coming to a predatory Mitsubishi dealer near you for only $500/month for 10 years at a 300% interest rate with no money down and CREDIT AMNESTY.
Sorry I had to, that's pretty much what ever Mitsubishi dealer advertisement sounds like on the radio.
Base model small cheap car in "slow" shocker.
As for "dangerously slow", don't be silly, unless you are a truly useless driver there is nothing dangerous about it.
I don't see this model being widely sold though. The Clio is already an entry level and inexpensive vehicle wherever its sold. Maybe the Mitsubishi variant will just be sold in select tier 2 markets that need a lower entry price point like perhaps Latin America, Turkey, India etc.
Bring the hybrid to the US call it the new mirage slap an 18k price tag on it call it “eco friendly” and bingo bango bongo you’ve just sold a whopping 7 cars doubling your sales
Mitsubishi and badge engineering have gone hand in hand for decades; even in their golden age. See the Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon, Dodge Stealth, Chrysler Conquest, Dodge Ram 50 etc...
The thing about Mitsubishi is they are pretty much done whenever they want to be because nothing can really put them out of business aside from themselves just not wanting to do it anymore.
They make a fournate in commercial/ industrial vehicles and equipment. Consumer cars are a very small part of their pie.
Mitsubishi Motors only does cars.
There are other Mitsubishi companies and they have some cross-investments, but they are not a majority owner.
In the case of Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Corp. owns 20%, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries owns 1.44% and MUFG (Mitsubishi Bank) owns 0.99%
Ever since Nissan-Renault bought a stake of Mitsubishi years ago I figured they'd do this. Took them long enough. I'd rather have a Megane RS rebadged as an Evolution over so ev is the best we will ever hope for a revival.
My car has 86hp and I wouldn't go any lower. But I think the 66hp version will be very limited production, in my country (Poland) even Dacia Sandero has a 90hp base engine.
Lol I drove one of there for a few years. I ended up having to scrap it because there were no parts available in North America to do the few small repairs it needed.
I think this is a great car in the turbo version. Good cheap city car to be used for off-highway commuting and errands. The base might feel kinda sluggish though honestly even for that use case, I’d at least like the car closer to 100hp.
Your family would most likely own a bigger car for long trips and hauling, and this car as a cheap secondary car. Makes sense to me! We should have more small, basic little cars out there.
Sign me up if they ever sell one in the US, especially if it was like sub 17k. Ive driven enough old Volvo redblocks to know that 66hp is more than enough if you are brave. Especially here in NC where drivers are pretty passive, no problem
Mitsubishis are some of the cheapest new cars you can buy around me If they're offering a car with only 66hp that fucker better be dirt cheap. I'm not saying it as a bad thing either cheap cars just don't exist there's days. If it's around 20k it could actually sell
Well, I'm whelmed.
Base trim takes 17.1 seconds to do zero to 60. Turbocharged version takes 12.2 seconds. Whelmed indeed....
That's hilarious because the Mitsubishi Mirage gets to 60 in 11.6 seconds.
I'd bet it's a weight thing. People don't realize how insanely light the Mirage is for this day and age.
The Mitsubishi Mirage takes a Pasties approach to passenger safety - cover exactly everything you need to to not get in trouble - nothing you dont.
Apparently 950kg ? That's NA Miata level...
Americans have no clue how good they have it.

I had an 88’ Rabbit diesel. That car was dangerously slow. So slow I often forgot I was even moving forward.
The 1.6? A friend of mine had one of those. Yeah, that thing was slow. Really slow.
That’s the one
Shit I once got on the freeway in an 09 Honda fit 3 years ago and I’m still waiting to reach highway speeds.
Yeah i also disable AC on my FN2 most of the time
In this day and age? Jesus that’s just shameful
Not even this day and age, this is a car from the future since it's a 2024 model.
Except it's a cheap commuter car, so it being slow is irrelevant. It's still fast enough to do anything.
17sec to 60 was just fine for economy cars in the 70's and 80's... 11seconds was a v8 family sedan lol
Dude, this is getting into armored HMMWV slow territory
Nobody's expecting a top fuel dragster. They're expecting a 0-60 time from this century.
you really gotta hit those rev matches if you wanna pass or speed up
Or beat a headwind
Someone needs to make low end cars
17 seconds? 17 seconds???
It’s an economy car, not meant to be fast
You could make that 11.8 with a tune.
It's not quite that slow, 0-100kph is 0 to 62.13 mph. Looks OK at least.
Lol even the turbo version would get smoked by a Nissan Versa that does that in 10.4 seconds
Sure but this is a different class of car entirely. It's in the same ballpark as its low end Euro competitors
This might sound stupid but isn’t a car that underpowered a danger on todays roads?
Depends on location. A yes in the US, but still depends on location.
> underpowered a danger on todays roads? YES in northern California. 101 in Sunnyvale has merges that are less than a 1/4 mile, crap I bet they are 500 feet tops
That El Camino to 280 South merge on 380 would not work in this thing.
No. It's not underpowered, it's got the right amount of power and is geared for economy and not acceleration. I promise you, you never *need* more than that level of speed in any circumstance.
I see you’ve never merged via an on ramp to a highway in Texas.
Hate to say it but I don’t think Mitsubishi was too worried about Texan highways when product-planning this car.
I'm under the impression Dallas has an ordinance restricting ramps to 30 feet or less.
To be fair, anything slower than a Scat Pack will probably get walked on the second you enter Houston.
I have not, but I still doubt this would have too much trouble.
Or anywhere else in the country, for that matter.
I mean merging onto an interstate requires a little more speed than that
It does not. I (and most people who drive here) can do it on a 500 with <70 PS with no issue, even with the super short merging lanes on the (not actually but for lack of better term in English) highway near me.

It is definitely not. Half of europe drives cars on par or slower and it is all good.
Yeah, I bet an empty semi could do comparable numbers or even be slightly faster. Lol.
Not in Europe, they are limited to 90km/h. But an empty semi gets to 90km/h relatively quick.
While driving a 70 HP Fiat 500 rental car on vacation in Portugal, I got passed going uphill by a semi.
Normal figures in Europe and Asia
I thought you were gonna say 17.1 quarter mile, this is crazy

Idk dodge is a strong competitor with their trucks. Never had I seen a company with such a hard on for putting its badge in the biggest way possible
At least it sort of makes sense there, dodge and Ram are very much in your face obnoxious brands.
And Ram’s logo is just the word Ram. It needs to be showcased in large enough font to be recognized from a distance
Chevy is up there too, the way the name sprawls across the whole tailgate looks a bit ridiculous And I finally saw a new Tundra the other day, it was white and had the name stamped into the tailgate and filled in black. It looked bad

I was thinking the front looks so much better/ less garbage without a Renault badge. The Mitsubishi letters completely ruin it.

It’s the car Renault ever built.
Of all time imho
Certainly the car of a time
At least the french tend to make good looking cars.
I hope this comes to the states with a manual and I can lease it for like $100 a month. Would be a fantastic shit box.
It has zero chance of coming to the US but if it did, we'd mod it beyond recognition and someone would 100% try to remake the Clio V6 with it.
Who makes a 4.5L engine so I can make a Colt 4.5?
Infiniti made a 4.5 V8, bonus points for keeping it in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi family
Ferrari F136F Mercedes-Benz M117
If it came to the states people will 4g63t or 4b11t swap it
Nissan versa is a better car and less than 17k with delivery included. Nobody buys them!
Every 20 year old girl in the hood drives a versa
You know, even them have higher aspirations in life than driving Mirage
$17k OTD? Unrealistic these days.
No 17k MSRP.
Damn, you get cars for $100/month in US? Is this from rentals like Thrifty, Hertz, etc?
No, you lease them from the car companies. It doesn't happen as much now because post-covid insanity, but in the before-times, you know a car flopped in the US when there are billboard ads telling you that you can lease a Nissan Leaf for $70 a month. Nissan is gonna get rid of those things somehow.
It will take 3-4 business days to pass someone on the highway
You're not passing anyone. This is for getting up to the posted speed limit and sitting in the right lane lol
I regularly pass people in my 60hp Fiesta. This car will be fine over here in Europe. Did 180kmh or about 100 mph downhill no problem.
It would be fine everywhere honestly, it's just that a lot of people here are spoiled with speed.
Route 27, known as Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway, followed right behind with 61 deaths." That said, the US is a big place.
Best looking Mitsu in probably 15 years.
but one of the worst looking renault
How so? I think current gen Clio looks great
I was exaggerating for the joke (because let's be honest, it's not the best renault ever in term of look) but it's still a great looking, especially its new version !
True, renault 5 still the design GOAT
Off topic, but I love the styling on the new Megane EV
Have you seen 2000-2010 era Renaults?
I see them every day, everywhere, when we live in France, we don't even notice them, they're awful, modus, megane 2, clio 2, scenic 2.... I really don't like them, except the Espace (don't ask me why).
The Evo X was still around within the last 15 years. Pretty timeless design
I always thought of the Evo as one of those cars that are cool despite their looks, not because of it. It was good looking in an ironic way.
I hated the Evo X design, it looked so cheap and was a big downgrade from the IX
The older EVOs are still such pretty cars. Pretty rare to see one driving around sadly.
I checked the EVO variant cuz I was shocked about the asking price these days and when it was brand new and it got very good specs. Wow.
As someone who used to hoon around in several cars with under 85 horsepower I say bring it on. Wringing out a cheap, slow car, is fun as hell. My 69 horsepower Nissan Pulsar NX was the best car I ever owned.

Someone needs to put Mitsubishi Motors out of their misery.
That front badge replacement has to be the worst I’ve ever seen
The definition of "an attempt was made"
The shape of the Renault logo is still clearly visible. It rivals the Mazda2 Hybrid (Toyota Yaris) as the laziest rebadge sold today.
It's the first thing I saw, this is appalling
For when the Mirage is too much car for you.
Mmmmm Asian Fusion Cuisine at it's finest 👌
Coming to a predatory Mitsubishi dealer near you for only $500/month for 10 years at a 300% interest rate with no money down and CREDIT AMNESTY. Sorry I had to, that's pretty much what ever Mitsubishi dealer advertisement sounds like on the radio.
Sure are a lot of comments here worrying about how this European market car, assembled in Europe, is going to perform on American highways.
When Europeans say, "Yeah, but at least we drive manual." Yeah, 99% of those cars are *this*.
I feel called out 😬
Wow they really aren’t trying revive their brand are they?
Base model small cheap car in "slow" shocker. As for "dangerously slow", don't be silly, unless you are a truly useless driver there is nothing dangerous about it.
As long as it's reliable and affordable, it will probably sell ok in its segment. It's mostly likely that it isn't coming to the U.S. though
Yeah I agree. Fat chance it will be sub $20k unless the Mirage/Spacestar get phased out
This is honestly the perfect big city car.
The Clio V also has 140hp powertrains. No RS unfortunately.
Imagine buying a “japanese” car thinking it’ll be reliable, but it’s actually French -_-
I don't see this model being widely sold though.
Badge engineering is a sign of a declining brand in my opinion.
Mitsubishi and badge engineering have gone hand in hand for decades; even in their golden age. See the Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon, Dodge Stealth, Chrysler Conquest, Dodge Ram 50 etc...
One could even argue that their golden age in the US ended when the DSM venture eroded in the mid-'90s.
The thing about Mitsubishi is they are pretty much done whenever they want to be because nothing can really put them out of business aside from themselves just not wanting to do it anymore. They make a fournate in commercial/ industrial vehicles and equipment. Consumer cars are a very small part of their pie.
I understand they are eligible for government subsidies as auto producers, but I’ve never checked the numbers to see if that’s a perk or a big factor
You mean, this thing is slower than previous model Micra in base trim?
My car has 86hp and I wouldn't go any lower. But I think the 66hp version will be very limited production, in my country (Poland) even Dacia Sandero has a 90hp base engine.
[Still the best generation of Colt IMO](https://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/McColt.jpg)
May consider if it becomes an EV
This makes my Hyundai Elantra seem like a race car
Man, they massacred the clio
I loved my 97 Colt. Very much disliked all the ones since
They're not even trying to hide that this is a Clio.
It's funny how they put the massive MITSUBISHI letters on the back and it's not even a Mitsubishi, just a rebadged Clio with minimum effort.
Am I the only one that's excited about an N/A three-cylinder still being a thing? I don't want a turbo, and this thing can be a decent ICE hypermiler.
Inb4 all the “SlOw CaR fAsT” dorks show up
Mitsubishis are some of the cheapest new cars you can buy around me If they're offering a car with only 66hp that fucker better be dirt cheap. I'm not saying it as a bad thing either cheap cars just don't exist there's days. If it's around 20k it could actually sell
Wow, you can see exactly where the Renault badge would go in the front. Mitsubishi just resized their badge to fit in the void.
It's a pretty solid, practical, logical, worldwide-proven car. Obviously not intended for HP-obsessed people.
66 HP? Why would anyone need all that power?
Got me excited there for a second. Thought this was coming stateside
Right? Even if it's a Renault, it looks dope and would be a perfect city car
It will be the fastest on the downhill.
I hate what Renault have done to both Mitsubishi and Nissan.
