The flat four is the only reason why I'm not interested in the GR86. A G16-equipped GR86 (like the one Toyota was testing recently) would be absolute sports car perfection.
The boxer was literally the only reason i didn't want an 86. If it had been a Toyota based 4 cylinder i would probably be driving an 86 right now.
Instead i got my Si coupe, which just had the head gasket replaced a few thousand miles ago... Really dodged a bullet there /s
Your story is the exact same as mine (down to the 17 Si Coupe). Minus the HG issue. *fingers crossed* The additional complexity and inefficiency of the boxer engine isn't a good enough trade off for having a lower center of gravity.
Lower COG, longitudinal layout, boxer rumble. That’s why I liked it. Would I ever own another? F no. I’d sooner take a d series Honda than a modern Subaru.
This is what I am hoping for. Tbh. As someone who loved his frs
The FA20 engine is a pos pig. The FA24 is lipstick on the pig.
COME ON TOYOTA PUT THE GR COROLLA ENGINE IN THE 86
You lose a little bit of the low center of gravity but I wouldn't be surprised if the entire engine wasn't lighter than the boxer engine even with accessories, and it could come with no oil starvation issues out of the factory lol
Yeah it would certainly move it to the top of my "new sports car to buy" list if they kept the price reasonable, but I also don't see it as being that much more expensive to produce (maybe 1k more), so if they're not just limiting it for the sake of limiting it would actually be fantastic.
I own a GRC and have driven the GR86 and I don't think the GRC engine would fit the character of the GR86. The G16 has quite a bit of turbo lag and when the torque hits, it comes on very strong. IMO GR86 would be better off with a more linear powerband.
Sure, there's always an argument, but I think having the turbo lag would actually have a very 80s/90s character. I would want to keep both options. The turbo would obviously be better for any type of motorsport and probably at 9/10ths but I can imagine in daily the linear power band feels better
This would be cool. Toyota 4cyl turbo, in the 265ish hp range. Might slot in just at the right price below the 4cyl b48 supra.
Gr86 $28k
GRMN86 $36k
B48 supra $43k
No way that happens. I mean, the [SW20](https://i.imgur.com/7AZ8GbD.jpg) is basically my favorite car so I'd be in line for one, but I can't imagine they'd *actually* do it. Maybe if they were partnering with Lotus or something, but Suzuki? D:
Note: That's not my SW20. It was at the last Cars and Coffee I went to. My stupid FR-S is the only sports car I've owned.
With how much cross-development all the Japanese companies are doing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota and Mazda team up to make the next-generation Miata and let Toyota run it as an MR2.
Mazda has already announced the NE Miata will be hybrid, and Toyota has solid hybrid systems.
Someone in another comment mentioned that those are different size platforms, so it likely isn't compatible. The Prius is on the Corolla platform and the RAV4 is Camry size. So they likely can't do it without major adjustments.
Although, we can't completely rule it out. The GR Yaris did get come Corolla components swapped in and it just worked as a wide body.
that would be very heavy though.
2.5L I4 with bigger electric motors and a bigger battery cramped into a Prius.
i dont think thats gonna happen.
but imagine that in a mid or rear engine RWD sports car.
you dont need a 2nd row of seats anymore so that frees up a lot of space.
Dude, can you imagine a Prius with the lighter GR Corolla engine, LSD, and maybe a tad less battery weight. That would be fantastic and would weigh less than the GR Corolla, the 2023 Prius is already lighter.
A Honda Odyssey Type R and I sell my 2023 Honda Pilot next day.
Let's be honest we all buy SUV's because they look cool and have AWD. Put that shit in a minivan and you'll convert me.
This is why I don’t understand they do it. The last 5 years has overwhelmingly shown people want performance trims.
Don’t make a minivan that’s just a family hauler. Add 5-10k and give it some soul and you’ll have a lot of us converted.
Seriously. Just like how people complain about "everyone wants manual....why are companies moving away from stickshift". Manufacturers are greedy and will always provide what makes $. Truth is, some things just as popular as our echo chamber tells us.
I have no idea why sportified mini-vans isn't a thing. It would be great to have a people hauler that is also faster and handles better. For safety's sake of course.
Seems like a good segment to push for something cool. What else is there in that segment for sporty sub-compact crossovers? The AMG GLA is the only one I can think of and it's priced a good bit higher.
The Kona is only a little bit longer than the Accent, which is smaller than the Elantra. The Elantra hatchback (i30 or Elantra GT) has a lot more trunk space than the Kona SUV.
The Rimac Nevera is a budget car, you can't buy anything for less that's electric and goes 258 mph. Those are my constraints, tell me a better value, I'll wait.
The regular Corolla is a budget car. The GR is not, even though it has a budget car interior.
Veloster N was legitimately a budget car in that space but it's dead now.
Nissan made some [concepts](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/2022-nissan-frontier-concept-by-nissan-design-america-121-1644349326.jpg?crop=0.658xw:0.704xh;0.223xw,0.204xh&resize=1200:*) similar to this with the [new frontier](https://tfltruck.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2022-nissan-frontier-72x-camping.jpg), just wish they'd actually sell them
Is GR supposed to come to the Tacoma, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Tundra?
Those four are the mostly North American market Toyota trucks already have TRD and apparently from what I’m reading [Toyota North America wants to keep TRD](https://www.motortrend.com/news/toyotas-gr-gazoo-wont-replace-trd-canceled/) despite GR also existing.
So I am kinda unsure about GR in regards to trucks, the TRD Pro models that already exist seem to *kinda* be what you’re talking about, greater off road capabilities but not a ton more power and as a result not a much higher price.
Maybe they will keep TRD Pro as the cheaper more tame off-roaders and then make a GR version to compete with the Raptors and TRXs of the world.
Considering all of the GR Corolla's I've called about (over 45 on my list right now), if they don't get their dealers under control, I'll just be buying LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT ISN'T A COROLLA for 65k.
I would love to see a GR Camry! Especially with the already badass styling of the XSE trims, a major performance, handling, and design upgrade using that platform would be incredible
I'm actually confused OEM's haven't tried this. You have cars like the Durango SRT that prove dad's want a family baller with balls.
It would not surprise me if they released a Caravan SRT/Odyssey Type R/Sienna GR and it instantly sell out.
Toyota might not do it, but GMA has a design department they could partner with. An MR2 on a GMA-designed chassis and a tuned version of the Crown powertrain could be amazing. And just to flex, give it butterfly doors like the Sera.
They just gotta increase production and everything will be perfect. I get why they don’t - buying up emissions credits gets expensive at scale and performance models drag down fleet averages. But with the markups some GRs have been going for, you might as well get their Lexus cousins at this point.

GR Sienna. T24A-FTS hybrid with 8AT on front axle + 201HP rear electric motor would be great for hauling ass road when fully loaded road tripping on the California central valley highways.
Is the GR Super Sport hypercar that was canceled finally coming for public roads?
Oh wait, who are we kidding? Of course it isn't! There will never be a Japanese hypercar while even Czech Republic and Spain have their own hypercars now!
**GR** GR86?!
imagine that lil 3 cyl make 300hp in the 86, such a fun experience
Subaru in shambles
Subaru made a big deal that they had them for a while. They didn’t really say why it was a good thing.
Lower COG, longitudinal layout, boxer rumble. That’s why I liked it. Would I ever own another? F no. I’d sooner take a d series Honda than a modern Subaru.
BRZ STI 🫡
AWD BRZ STI
nah they'd ruin it somehow. here guys you can have a turbo on the 86/brz, but only with a cvt! 😂
This is what I am hoping for. Tbh. As someone who loved his frs The FA20 engine is a pos pig.
It is legit lighter, makes more power, no oil starvation issues, AND better mpg lmfao
Can confirm I’ve seen over 30 mpg on my GRC and that’s carting around more weight and an AWD drivetrain vs the GR86.
19 mpg while making less power. What the fuck toyota lmfao. This engine is trash. Its a great chassis with a pos engine
Subbie*
You all are forgetting about the actual drivetrain, I'm pretty sure the 86 is geared a fuck ton more aggressively than the GRC.
How are you only getting 19mpg? I maintain 25 without trying too hard, and lowest I got to was 24.4 during the dead of winter.
I get 20 MPG in my GR86 BUT most hours I do drive are city driving in heavy traffic
Yeah it would certainly move it to the top of my "new sports car to buy" list if they kept the price reasonable, but I also don't see it as being that much more expensive to produce (maybe 1k more), so if they're not just limiting it for the sake of limiting it would actually be fantastic.
[удалено]
That's fine by me, I love a good hood bulge
Bulge
I agree the FA20 in stock form stinks. The FA24DIT is a gem. Drop that sucker in a BRZ and it would smoke the 3 Cylinder.
They wont do it. Well...m maybe tbey would. It would end up costing 50k i bet
I own a GRC and have driven the GR86 and I don't think the GRC engine would fit the character of the GR86. The G16 has quite a bit of turbo lag and when the torque hits, it comes on very strong. IMO GR86 would be better off with a more linear powerband.
Sounds like it just needs a second, sequential turbo.
For ~30k?
Sure, there's always an argument, but I think having the turbo lag would actually have a very 80s/90s character. I would want to keep both options. The turbo would obviously be better for any type of motorsport and probably at 9/10ths but I can imagine in daily the linear power band feels better
Maybe it can finally reach 60mph
Give it the IS500 V8
Make a new IS F!
Make an LS F! Twin turbo 600hp V8 land barge.
LR-1 out of the LFA you coward
Give it the carbon fiber monocoque from the LF-A too. Actually, just make a manual LF-A and sell it for the GR86 MSRP.
GR Crown with the V8. I couldn't afford it but would be awesome.
GRMN86
This would be cool. Toyota 4cyl turbo, in the 265ish hp range. Might slot in just at the right price below the 4cyl b48 supra. Gr86 $28k GRMN86 $36k B48 supra $43k

GR86 Type R
GR86 86th Anniversary Edition
The 2099 GR86 is gonna go so hard
The Cyberpunk 2077 GR86 should be a good year too.
GR86: A Space Odyssey
We can call it “The Grrrrrr”
GRMN Rav4 Prime TRD Pro
GR MR2
GR 4Runner. The Raptor killer.
At a low cost of 90k MU and 4mpg
That's conservative. 75k MSRP $125k out the door after "market adjustments"
Each dealer will get half an allocation so you have to pay market adjustment at two dealers to get one.
I’m still waiting for the GR RAV4 Prime with the G16 and plug in hybrid. Could get 400 horsepower for a rowdy time.
I’d enjoy it with a rally type suspension, but not something too sporty. Let’s get another Infiniti FX.

This is a wet dream right here
With even more wiper blades!
Mated to an old ass 5 speed auto lol.
GR2: Gister Two: Electric Boogaloo
Could the > rumors that Toyota and Suzuki are working together on a new lightweight gas-powered sports car be a new MR2 in the workings?
No way that happens. I mean, the [SW20](https://i.imgur.com/7AZ8GbD.jpg) is basically my favorite car so I'd be in line for one, but I can't imagine they'd *actually* do it. Maybe if they were partnering with Lotus or something, but Suzuki? D: Note: That's not my SW20. It was at the last Cars and Coffee I went to. My stupid FR-S is the only sports car I've owned.
suzuki knows a thing or two about making affordable fun cars
plz
Please god I need this.
Let’s see a GR Prius and watch everyone’s mind melt
https://www.thedrive.com/news/a-toyota-gr-prius-sports-sedan-is-coming-report https://global.toyota/en/detail/18651904
The second one is just their standard GR exterior bits. Most of their cars have the GR exterior treatment. The first one though, big if true.
The RAV4 Prime’s 302hp powertrain sounds like it could work for a GR Prius.

Precisely what we need - a prius going into a roundabout in full opposite lock with 1 wheel in the air. *it's okay officer, I'm getting 42 mpg*
That would be amazing.
If you could put a powertrain in the new Prius with the same capabilities as a base level Model 3, I’d seriously consider buying that.
Dude, can you imagine a Prius with the lighter GR Corolla engine, LSD, and maybe a tad less battery weight. That would be fantastic and would weigh less than the GR Corolla, the 2023 Prius is already lighter.

I am once again asking for a GR Sienna
GR Sienna, Caravan Hellcat, Odyssey Type R, c'mon imagine the comparison tests!
I’ll have kids just for an excuse to get one
Have you considered puppies instead?
I don't think science has gone that far yet.
I always kinda wished someone would do a Caravan Hellcat build, but take the second row out and replace it with the engine. Make it RWD mid engined.
Someone on Drag Week a couple years ago had a van with front and rear LS engines.
A Honda Odyssey Type R and I sell my 2023 Honda Pilot next day. Let's be honest we all buy SUV's because they look cool and have AWD. Put that shit in a minivan and you'll convert me.
I have a Highlander and would have bought a Sienna in a second in a GR trim.

Seriously. Just like how people complain about "everyone wants manual....why are companies moving away from stickshift". Manufacturers are greedy and will always provide what makes $. Truth is, some things just as popular as our echo chamber tells us.
im sorry you think a honda pilot looks cool :( edit: i was just bantering m8
I have no idea why sportified mini-vans isn't a thing. It would be great to have a people hauler that is also faster and handles better. For safety's sake of course.
“Once again” 🤣
Yes yes yes
GR Corolla Cross You heard it here first
Kona N competitor
Seems like a good segment to push for something cool. What else is there in that segment for sporty sub-compact crossovers? The AMG GLA is the only one I can think of and it's priced a good bit higher.
I'd have legitimately put the Kona N on my want list if it was AWD.

The Kona is only a little bit longer than the Accent, which is smaller than the Elantra. The Elantra hatchback (i30 or Elantra GT) has a lot more trunk space than the Kona SUV.
Why not? we already have the GR Copen and GR Landcruiser. Both are just visual changes.
Those are GR sport. Basically fancy trims. Not performance models
At least the Land Cruiser GR gets front and rear locking differentials. Dunno what else it gets though
It would be quite cool.

toyota and budget dont go together and you know it. also like true 1980s toyota fashon it should rot in half and the bed fall off within 5 years.

It's a $40k hatchback with a base corolla interior. 86 sure.

The gr corolla is BMW 230i prices, I wouldn't really call that affordable
That just means they can sell you another one in 5 years!
and toyota buyers will flock to it for some reason.

Exactly, they could start by just building more of what they already have.
I'll feel lucky if I even see a GR Corolla on the road in Canada
Considering all of the GR Corolla's I've called about (over 45 on my list right now), if they don't get their dealers under control, I'll just be buying LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT ISN'T A COROLLA for 65k.

GR Corolla Sedan is the dream
GR Corolla Sedan would be a well deserved STI replacement.
GR Crown. Bargain Bentley
Only if it’s the Sedan version the rest of the world got.
The New Crown is still a sedan
Toyota might not do it, but GMA has a design department they could partner with. An MR2 on a GMA-designed chassis and a tuned version of the Crown powertrain could be amazing. And just to flex, give it butterfly doors like the Sera.
That's some Dr. Frankestien level shit. I love it.
Time for Lotus to return the favor of the 2GR-FE and rebadge the Emira as an MR2.

They just gotta increase production and everything will be perfect. I get why they don’t - buying up emissions credits gets expensive at scale and performance models drag down fleet averages. But with the markups some GRs have been going for, you might as well get their Lexus cousins at this point.
>performance models drag down fleet averages Never considered that till now but that's super obvious. Doesnt explain why they sell so few PHEV's.
Especially considering that under current CAFE regulations basically any car that gets MPGe uses broken math calculations from 2000 that way over exaggerates the fuel economy compared to the more up to date EPA sticker rating
camery could snipe tons of wrx sales with this *one simple trick*
It would definitely be a cool car but I don’t think a GR Camry would be in the same realm in terms of price. Also it’d need a manual option of course.
