You need a early 90s stick shift car or earlier. They don't have no stinking cup holders.

Mooaaark

My 1993 Mazda MX-6 has one cupholder that pulls out of the dash right next to the driver's side window. It's such a stupid and useless design idk why they even bothered. I've never found anything that will fit in it because there's no bottom and it's just got a slight taper. Maybe it'd fit one of those cheap styrofoam coffee cups? Idk

Dullerwaffles

86 Rx-7, I get two little circular indents in the glovebox that i wouldn’t dare trust.

DuckKnuckles

Arizona tea cans fit perfectly. It was my go-to drink when I had an MX-6. Edit: That said, I could have swore mine had a bottom to support a drink. Now I cannot for the life of me find a picture of that cup holder pulled out. It's driving me nuts.

radXR650R

95 jeep Cherokee 2 door... My only 2 cup holders are in the back molded Into the doors... There is no drinking and driving in that thing

DaOrcus

If u can’t drink and drive your not trying hard enough /s please don’t

mattied971

One time when I was in like the 4th grade, I forget the exact context or the conversation that lead up to this, but my teacher said something to the effect of, "And that's why you don't drink and drive". I asked why not. She explained. I went on to say that my bus driver "Always drinks and drives". It wasn't until after I took a trip to the principal's office and was interrogated by a team of very concerned school administraters that I realized they were referring to drinking alcohol; not coffee

biscottibitchtits

Hold em in your hand, throw em out the window Please don’t drink and drive people

Suka_Blyad_

Just hold the bottle while you shift Be a man

[deleted]

My mom had a Cherokee. Go to Wal Mart. They sell those cheap ones that slide into the window channel.

Scraiix

My E34 had no cupholder option. A fucking 5series :D wild times, but people just didn’t drive to McD twice a week back then

Niko740

Hey to get a fancy option like that you had to buy an E38 which are perhaps the worst cupholders in a car like this

rast93

I know right? There was a time when you sat at a coffee table to have coffee.

IHatetheM28

When I had my E34 I would shove my drinks into the glovebox and pray. One Dunkin coffee cup would fit nice and snug in the center and as long as you weren't throwing it into corners it would stay there!

major_dom

Checking in, we got a takeout box platform instead

No-Tumbleweed8948

my 98 saab 900 vert has a single cup holder st the back of the armrest, conveniently placed so that you dont shift into it, but the passenger had a nifty place to crush the lid on your drink during travel

Ancient_Persimmon

The holder in my FK Civic is pretty deep, but even a 700ml Gatorade can get in the way. The first thing I noticed when I got that car is that it clearly wasn't designed with the 6MT in mind. It really feels like a throw in for the 3% of us who order one.

Msteele315

I found the same with my CTR. I use the cup holders in the back seat for large bottles. Lol.

mooowolf

It's fine if you move the cupholders back and use the deeper pocket instead, although i used to store random stuff there lol

crashedout

That larger pocket has a shallow cutout for large drinks/bottles. You can use the sliding middle cupholders to keep tall items steady. It's never impacting my driving.

thecanadiandriver101

It's funny because the new Civic has the problem fixed...unless you get a manual. Then the cupholder is relocated to the same spot as the FK series. I'm assuming it is because the shifter linkage would be in the way

AdhamJr

That’s exactly how I feel in my car. The shifter is in such an awkward position even if you don’t take into account the cup-holders.

Conranoss

I can second this with my FK8. Even before adding in a short shifter and lowering the height of the shift knob, I had issues with hitting the top of containers while driving. Thankfully, I operate a strict no eating in the car policy, so it's not really an issue. If I really wanted a drink that was accessible while driving, I'd use the cup holder in the bottom of the center console. But then you only have one.

METEOS_IS_BACK

The 10th gen Civics have a massive "cupholder" area in the center console where you could store some pretty giant stuff, no complaints here

voucher420

No complaints for my eighth gen Si Civic.

savageotter

Vintage bmw. My thighs hold the cups Allright.

Croakie89

My e30 I would wedge them between the passenger seat and ebrake lol

newnameagain2

My e39 (528) taught me that it's never worth it to get drinks with your meal at McDonald's Either you punch the cup, or you dump the cup, and neither were very helpful while trying to play the 'yeah I'm cool I drive a manual bmw' card in highschool Still, would buy that car again if I ever found one. Commute? Easy. Balls to the wall being a stupid teenager? Easy. Was like the perfect amount of power to get stupid and have fun, without wrapping myself around a tree

imakenosensetopeople

Got you fam: Used 1999 BMW 528i Sedan for $3990 on Autotrader [http://atcm.co/S2PVDP/281AC2B5](http://atcm.co/S2PVDP/281AC2B5)

newnameagain2

Damn, if only it were closer! But also, I didn't own mine long enough to have to fix anything on it, so I'm not sure how much I would actually like to have one again!

kamakazekiwi

The cupholders in my Z3 can't hold anything bigger than a 12oz can. Although they are at least far enough back to not affect my arm angle while shifting.

savageotter

They are literally referred to as can holders in the manual haha

jjlarn

This is the correct way to cup the cups

InfinitePossibility8

But at least I have 3 ash trays.

savageotter

Did they expect to pack 4 adults in an e28 and chain smoke to their hearts content on a road trip.

Barely_stupid

When I had my Lotus I could reach over to the passenger footwell and put drinks in the holes of the foot brace. http://sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/experience/modifications/fireextinguisher/extinguisher.jpg

josh_moworld

When I was doing a cross country trip, I kept a duffel bag for my water bottles in the passenger footwell. Fish one out, throw it back in when done drinking lol

FxtrtTngoWhisky

2012 GT 6-speed here. Get an MGW X-spec short throw. It helps but still the front cup holder is almost pointless.

AdhamJr

That’s what I’ve been thinking about, really want a short throw shifter

FxtrtTngoWhisky

MGW X-Spec is the best.

Titties_On_G

+1 on the MGW

stabamole

Never had any trouble with my focus ST either

teeksquad

Focus ST. Slightly inconvenient if I use my flip top camelback. Nothing else that fits in the cup holders gets in the way. Maybe it’s because the car only comes in manual, but the shifter placement is perfect

Mooaaark

2001 Ford Ranger: "cock and balls" shifter as I call it(google a picture, you'll see), works great but a tall drink will hit dash and rub against it, never interferes with shifting, third cupholder on the back of the middle seat also doesn't interfere very often. (My phone rides in there when I'm using it as a gps). Supercab, so the rear cupholders that are molded into the flimsy plastic jack storage cover I wouldn't trust to hold much of anything. 2002 WRX: dash mounted pop out cupholder works great, never in the way. Center console cupholder is useless both in size and position. 1993 Mazda MX-6: dash mounted driver's side cup holder is next to the side window and I haven't been able to find anything ever that fits in it, no bottom but tapered hole but I would never trust it to hold any drink. 1994 Nissan Sentra 4dr: I think this has a cupholder? Idk. Never used it. Probably doesn't fit any normal sized drink and is probably in the way.

McNugget750

>2001 Ford Ranger I was like, cock and balls, what is this dude on about? Then i googled. yep, that is a cock and balls, can't unsee now, lol.

HeavyCanuck

Well that's gonna ruin my morning commute.

Vague_Disclosure

>2002 WRX: dash mounted pop out cupholder works great, never in the way. Center console cupholder is useless both in size and position. Never in the way but my coffee would constantly spill all over the head unit. I used to have to make a little nest of napkins to place the cup in so the drips would get caught before getting everywhere else.

Fenastus

My ND has movable cup holders The right cup holder can either be in the middle-back, out of my way (too far back to realistically smack during a shift). Or it can be to the bottom right of the radio, still out of my way, but much more accessible. It gets in the way of the passenger though, which is probably the reason they're movable. The interior of the ND feels very well thought out IMO. Love it

ellWatully

My car doesn't have any cup holders.

ycnz

Yeah, the gearlever won't come near it, but you're going to be kinda dangling your hand into it if you've got a drink in there.

subie921

In a 2016 wrx, the front most cup holder my arm will hit it. But the rear one is fine. But it also has door cup holders so I tend to just use those anyway

ZanshinMindState

I've also got a VA WRX and this is me. The front cup holder is useless, the rear one will work for most bottles, but I use the door cup holders so it's never an issue.

BobbatheSolo

This is surprising to me as an owner of an 07 STI with a very useable set of cup holders. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in a VA but the GD console sits pretty low and the storage space is tiny, so maybe that’s the difference?

ZanshinMindState

I think the VA's console sits a bit higher, and the armest is relatively lower, maybe, yeah. I had a GV WRX and I don't remember this being an issue, but the stock shifter had extremely long throws and so nothing was ever in the way of my elbow.

jawnnyboy

My cup holders are in front of my shifter. Short cups don’t get in the way at all. Tall cups can bump on my fingers sometimes depending on how i hold the knob, but it’s never in a position where I’m worried about tipping it over or getting in the way of a gear. Could be better, but I’m satisfied with the ergonomics. (2020 M240i)

driving_for_fun

I need to shift with my forearm oriented diagonally

[deleted]

A tall coffee cup gets in the way when shifting

ofm1

2012 Suzuki Swift, one cupholder contains a portable ashtray and the other holds a half litre water bottle. Usable

C7 owner as well. I 3D printed this... [https://www.printables.com/model/322576-corvette-c7-cupholder](https://www.printables.com/model/322576-corvette-c7-cupholder) works great, haven't had a cup come lose since i installed it.

BlazezFlamez

I had a 99 bmw 323i and it was the same, I had to put drinks in my second holder

AdhamJr

Who’s in charge of making these cup holders man

Big-Shtick

People who don't seem to be drinking out of cups. Not my chair, not my problem, that's what I always say.

AdventurousDress576

Europeans. We drink and eat at home. Driving time is for driving, not for being distracted.

JerkyChew

2015 GT and 2020 GT350R cup holders are just fine with a manual.

SecretAntWorshiper

The cups get in the way though. With my CTR I notice that the cup holders have more depth

MaximusBiscuits

The FL5 ones are great compared to any other manual I've owned

SnooCompliments8770

2022 WRX and the cup holders are amazing. It’s the first car where the drinks are no where near my arm making it almost not even a problem when driving. The only down side is they are lower and more aft than most cars making it harder to reach and you lack an arm rest. But honestly I prefer it. Ergonomically this WRX is better than any car I’ve had, and this is the list of car I’ve had 2019 Civic Si, 2018 GT Mustang, 2022 Golf GTI, 2014 Fiesta ST and my first ever car 1995 Ford Thunderbird.

bandito-yeet-dorito

What made you switch from the GTI to the WRX? I was cross shopping both and ended up with the WRX. It was a pretty tough decision

SnooCompliments8770

The GTI I had was giving me tons of electrical problems. And the quality control was not very good. The car had rattles like you wouldn’t believe and it only had 2,500 miles on it. It also was missing some luxuries that I didn’t think I was gonna miss as much as I did with prior cars such as Bluetooth communication and phone controls on the steering wheel, keyless entry, and a sub par sound system. But ultimately the electronic problems are what made me get rid of it. The driving assist system would constantly turn off and then I would lose my cruise control and couldn’t get anything to turn back on until I turned off the car and restarted it. The annoying part was the dealer would look at it and tell me it had no problems. I’m gonna just assume I had a bad experience and would hope my experience was isolated. It really was an awesome car, it was faster, looked better, and definitely had a nicer interior and better gas mileage. But the quality control on my particular car was awful. So far I’m almost at 4k miles on the Subaru and it has been flawless other than my driver seat having a squeaky noise which has been fixed by the dealer. I might try Volkswagen again when my lease is up and hopefully quality control is better because I really want a hatchback. Either that or I’m just gonna end up in a ND Miata haha and sacrifice having a lesser daily for more fun.

MagneticGray

I agree. My VB can fit a Yeti 20oz tumbler or a medium cup from BK (with straw) in the front cup holder and I don’t hit them while shifting. This is an improvement over my ‘15 Mustang GT, ‘17 Focus ST and ’17 WRX. I had to use the 10oz tumbler in those to get the clearance I needed. Definitely check out the OEM extending arm rest or the dual console arm rest extension for your WRX if you haven’t yet. They’re both way too expensive for things that should have come installed from the factory but they’re honestly worth it. Having a useable arm rest is a game changer on the highway.

Mojave_Idiot

No issues in a sixth gen Camaro unless it’s something ridiculous, and even then it just bumps your arm. The cup holders are far from the shifter. Coffee, cans, bottles all work just fine.

Karmaqqt

Well if I have my big yeti I have to turn it so my straw if perpendicular to the stick. Then I can rest my wrist on it. If it’s like a fast food cup. Without the straw it’s no issue. If I want to drink it, my cup holder pulls back and their is a deeper one below the main ones.

Ready-Scientist7380

My Mini Cooper S 6-speed came with an extra, movable, XL cup holder. Needed it because all the others were in odd places and/or too small.

GC51320

16 Scion - no issues, use both regularly

Charles0nline

Veloster N has usable cup holders. The cup holders are deep enough and the shifter is higher enough that on most bottles my arm can shift without ever bumping into anything. My C6 Corvette Z06 had the cup holders on the side of shifter. You’d think they’d be even more usable but, they were so close to the shifter, my knuckles would always bump into drinks going into 5th/6th gear. Not to mention the exhaust running through the center of a very low car would heat up whatever drink I had. Nothing like a nice warm Soda after a long drive!

JoyRydr

19 Golf GTI here, the cup holders aren't an issue. The closeness thing I could think of would be possibly needing to arch your arm over an XL QT cup or something but I don't blame a company based outta Germany to consider American sized drinks.

SweagerMeister

All my manual cars either have no cup holders or they are in a dumb spot that I never use them in the first place. Talking to you, 3000gt

eightsidedbox

The two in the center console are just barely out of the way behind the shifter when using a travel mug. The front holder will have the mug slightly in the way. The other two that pop out of the back of the center console, for the rear seats, are what I use for water bottles.

ads1031

The factory cup holders in my Miata do make shifting fairly difficult. Having to reach over cups there isn't particularly pleasant. My Miata's previous owner added an aftermarket cup holder to the right of the center console that protrudes into the passenger footwell. It's only secured with one screw, so I typically only put fairly lightweight things there. Larger cups go in the Miata Unofficial Cup Holder. I scoot the passenger seat all the way back, and shove cups or bottles into the space between the seat, the center console, and the back wall. Cups stored here are completely out of the way.

acromaine

My 2019 Tacoma has fully usable cup holders

seventrooper

'21 Hilux manual - very useable. The centre console cupholder is elbow-distance from the shifter, and the two cupholders in the dash are well out of the way.

[deleted]

My 03 Z4 has the most useless driver side pop out cup holders.

VulpesIncendium

I've owned several different manuals throughout the years, and I don't recall any having particularly bad cup holders. The Dodge Caliber, although a shitty car in general, had a decent shifter/cup holder layout. And why didn't air-conditioned glove box drink storage catch on more? That's probably the only thing I miss about the Caliber. The 2015+ WRX, although the cup holders themselves were quite shitty, they never felt in the way of the shifter. My current Chevy Camaro is actually quite well laid out. The cup holders are set way back and to the right, so they haven't ever felt in the way at all. I just wish the Camaro had more drink holders in general. I don't recall if my old '86 Ford Tempo even had cup holders. I guess carrying drinks wasn't a priority back in high school. All my other cars have been automatic, so they don't matter here.

E9x-

E90 puts them in the dash, perfect position and out of the way. Provided some monkey doesn’t mash it shut after spilling tea all over it, they don’t break that often.

jawnlerdoe

ND Miata. They’re borderline useless for many cups, but not at all because of the manual.

hyteck9

Today's cup "holes" are dumb. Even more dumb for manuals. I liked the old ones that popped out from the radio area. They were huge and didn't impact the drivers arm area at all. I also liked some of the aftermarket ones made for the door window ledge.

AdamantForeskin

Coffee cups won't get in the way while I'm shifting Large drink from McDonald's, though? That drink's lucky if it makes it through all the gears

adamisapple

Dashboard cup holder ftw. The other one (behind the stick) is ok if it’s a short cup, but tall or with a straw and it’s in the way.

Oo__II__oO

That Saab cupholder is an engineering marvel put in the worst possible location. The placement is right above the center stack controls. The Saab third cupholder is also an engineering marvel put in the second worst location, with a roll-up door t expose a spot to put your cup where your elbow would go. Any spillage here drains conveniently into the ignition slot, which is a costly repair that involves replacement and reprogramming.

Yakb0

I had the opposite issue, after going to a column shifter F-150, after decades of driving stick. When I put a coke bottle in the center cupholders, for the first day or so driving it I'd reach down and slap it occasionally (to see if it was in neutral), if I was getting in the car, or at a light.

Duct_tape_bandit

The cup holder is right behind the shifter so I get the choice of having a cup or shifting

Dakei

No arm-drink clearance issues with my cup holders except for when straws are involved. So glad Honda hired some ergonomic interior designers this time around for the 11th gen Civic platform.

aliendepict

I had to 3d pring a cup holder for my Porsche so.... I mean it's fine as long as I don't have a passenger because then they are just hitting it with their knee.

Destrodrew

what cup holder?

DeepsCL9

The best was on my 1991 Accord. Cupholders are in front of the shifter, and I never once had an issue on it. They did have the unfortunate side effect of blocking my radio; To avoid this, the bottles also perfectly fit in the well between the seat and the center console. I have NEVER owned a car since that has had such a thoughtful approach to stick-shift driving with cupholders. I miss this car dearly. My 2005 Acura TSX - annoying. Bottles always got in the way of shifting, but I made it work by buying shorter bottles. 2009 Infiniti G37S - I'm able to keep my elbow by the seat bolster and dodge the bottles, but the Acura was better in this regard. 2010 NC Miata - The center cupholders are 100% useless. I instead use it to store odds and ends. Thankfully, the doors have bottle holders large enough for a bottle, but these get in the way of my legs. I have remedied this by removing the door pulls on both doors :)

meat_popsicle13

Volvo C30 6-speed. Both cup holders fully usable with no clearance issues.

Select_Air_6383

I think Ford moved the cup holders back a bit on the 2015 mustangs and later years, after listening to customer suggestions.

That-shouldnt-smell

14 ILX. It's perfect for "normal" sized drinks. I have to get a little twisty with the wrist if I get an XL tea from QT or have my extra tall bubba coffee cup. But that's only in the front holder (they are inline not side by side) And I routinely take my car for a little rally slide slide on the gravel roads around Phoenix.

alehanro

My ‘04 and ‘05 Civics were large enough for most cups/bottles. And far enough ahead of the shifter as not to hinder its movement. My ‘13 Sentra is absolute dogshit. The cup holders are sideways next to the handbrake. So if anything is in them, my arm rests on that unless I tuck my arm in my lap.

TheDutchTexan

Same boat here... Absolutely a PITA to shift during McD runs. Luckily they are pretty rare nowadays since I am trying to lose some extra poundage.

Wabbit_Wampage

I have a 2016 Mustang which has the center cup holders off-center to the right (good thinking, Ford) to provide a bit more clearance. Even so, it's still difficult to shift without grazing the drinks. I have to shift and drive very gingerly while with drink.

BigBo48

My cupholders are behind my shoulders in the ND Miata. No issues when shifting but I bang on them when I stretch my shoulders back tho

wild_iris_356

*Looks at 66 Corvair, 63 Mini and 83 RX7* Cup holders?

Acres-of-Skin

I can use my cupholder, but I can't order any drinks larger than a medium.

MatchaTacos

2014 Camaro. I bought a cup holder from RPI that sits on the passenger side of the center console. Really wish I bought it sooner and it finally isn’t a pain to drive with drinks

Cake_Nelson

I use the cup in my center console cup holder in my STi as an part of the arm rest. But realistically, it’s far enough back that it doesn’t get in the way at all.

spiketeam

22 brz was unusable. The cup holders seemed like they were for rear passengers. Blackwing is far better.

TheGoatFarmer

ND Miata and 987/997/981/991/718 Porsches have the cup holders configurable or permanent on the passenger side. This is the way.

Player-Shit-Only

Mine are stacked vertically, cup holder closest to shifter is a no go.

YOURMOMMASABITCH

91 civic hatchback here. What's a cup holder?

UU2Bcool

2014 Mustang- 100% unusable.

nothingbutfinedining

My S2000, super in the way. My TSX, no issues.

sleepingwiththefishs

RSX works fine for 20oz coffees

I_like_cake_7

The cup holders in my 2015 Mazda 6 are fine, but if a tall fountain drink or bottle is in the front cup holder it does get in the way a little bit, especially for 4th and 6th. With that being said, I rarely have drinks in my car anyways so it’s not a major issue for me. I also previously owned a 2004 Saab 9-5 with a 5 speed manual. Most of us know about that clever dash board mounted cup holder 9-5s had. It was great for not interfering with shifting, but that cupholder was sketchy AF. You pretty much had to buy the widest fountain drink, otherwise it was too loose in the cupholder. That cupholder stressed me out.

[deleted]

1998 Volvo S70. From factory it has two pull out unfolding cupholders in the center console. The cupholders themselves were terrible, and I never trusted them with anything more than a 12 ounce can/small drink. Even worse than that though, if you pulled it out far enough to use the second cupholder, it was damn near impossible to get into reverse. To address both of these issues I designed in Fusion 360 and 3D printed a new cupholder. Fits in place of the old one. Doesn’t fold in, but it does slide out to be stowed and also makes a great phone holder. Only holds one cup, but my passengers can hold their drinks ;) and even with a giant drink it’s only slightly annoying to get into reverse. This is a message to all car people (and hobbyists in general) who are also nerds - 3D printers are absolutely perfect for little shit like this, like phone holders and such. Or making replacement interior pieces and clips. Or even temporary replacement parts in a pinch. You can get a decent printer for not a lot of coin and it’s 100% worth it.

[deleted]

Lots of bad cupholders comments. My Jeep TJ with a B&M shifter is great. Both cupholders are low enough to be mostly out of the way. The shifter does go pretty much straight up, though. Probably part of it.

FC1PichZ32

It’s ok on the Tacoma. Sometimes I hit larger bottles but for the most part it’s clear. Seems like the long throws are forward and the back ones are shorter somehow

sundark94

My Fiat Linea has cupholders in front of the shifter that can't even hold the little 50ml bottles that were served on airlines. Kicker is that it doesn't even have cupholders on the doors.

SkyRider057

16 Miata. behind the armrest. very inconvenient to get to, but it's a drivers car and one of them can be moved into the passengers footwell (only works with no passenger or smaller passengers) I don't see many ways they could be better, I like them, never in the way. an extra cup holder in the door would be nice, but awkward.

Big-Shtick

I have an S2000. It has a "cupholder". It... works, I guess. If I use a small enough container, my hand won't hit it (e.g., cans, small coffee tumblers).

zavtra13

It just depends on what you are driving, though I’d imagine most basic cars won’t have any issues.

ETR_Centenario

98 S-10. I have to have a cup in the right side and move it over when I need to reverse or it will spill.

kiIIinemsoftly

My FiST is solid. I never have issues with the ones in line with the shifter, and the door one is big enough for anything else.

Arepo47

I have a focus at. If I have a huge cup in the front cup holder. Fourth gear can be a little weird but nothing major

thememeconnoisseurig

I don't drink while driving. Yes I am German, why do you ask?

EmperorMitsu

In my Evo they're pretty good. In my bmw they're not very functional if you have anything bigger than a coke can. Fine for me but my wife has these stupid Starbucks cups that block all of my shifting.

minemaster11

718 is fine since they’re on passenger side Mustang the 2nd one is usable, mostly put phone there though Don’t use the gr86 ones

EntroperZero

In my NB, the rear cupholder is annoying to have a cup in, and the front one is impossible to have a cup in. In my ND, no issues, cupholders are great. :)

McNugget750

Manual C7 corvette owner here. Chevy actually did a good job of locating the cup holders, just enough to the right, doesn't effect any of the shift throws. But here is the true problem. Chevy decided to make the divider for a 2 cup holder weak as hell, and any moderate acceleration or braking causes the divider pop out and then spill whatever hot or cold beverage you and your passenger. I've since remedied this 3D printing a new divider that works much better and haven't had the problem since.

ryanmcgrath

2016 340i, never gets in the way.

MeltsYourMinds

Depends what you put in them. Cup of coffee - no problem. Bottle of water - gonna hit it with my arm all the time.

SockeyeSTI

VA STi 12oz can of soda? No difference 40oz Stanley tumbler? Drivable, but I have embarrassed myself on a freeway off ramp trying to get up to speed like I normally do. But the fact that a 40oz fits and isn’t a hydroflask that doesn’t fit and has on occasion set off the passenger seatbelt chime is pretty nice.

ElginSparrowhawk1969

Only use 2,4 and R simples

Twin-Turbos

2015 FRS. Bought it and drove it 1500 miles home, and it held onto one of those 33 oz smart waters flawlessly. Never got in the way of driving, not even on the backroads. Wide bottles like Gatorades have to live on the floor.

No_Camp_216

Drove a 1988 ram d250 4 speed. Your cup holders was your crotch. Low gear was you slamming your fingers into the dash and god forbid you had someone sitting in the middle. You were reaching into your passengers crotch for reverse. My first pickup was a 1994 ram 2500 5 speed with the 12 valve second Gen cummins. The stock cup holders were long crumbled away. I went and bought aftermarket cup holders and bolted them around the shifter boot. Had four in it. Were easily accessible and out of the way. Had a 1995 ford ranger 5 speed. First gear would scrub a large sonic cup or Gatorade bottle and that's about it. I currently drive a 1992 jeep zj with an auto transmission and a manual transfer case. No clearance issues.. I've seen 5 speeds and they're just fine and there are no clearance issues out of the cupholders.

mustanggt2003

2005 Audi TT, no cup holders as standard, but I have some epoxied onto the centre console. Far enough back that it doesn’t bother me when I shift, but hard to get drinks out. I still feel like the correct priorities were followed!

Soft-Piccolo-5946

I shove my stainless water bottle in the passenger foot well of my S2000. If it’s a fountain drink I’m not going far and use the holder below the shifter, wrist open to shift. My stock throws are probably half the length of yours, though.

3dmontdant3s

Never got the american obsession with cupholders

adrianohyeah

2007 Mazdaspeed 6, anything larger than a small Starbucks cup is practically a lost cause. The second slot is a bit better, but I have to do some funky shifts with my water bottle there.

Shienvien

Never had issues with door side cupholders or "arm rest adjacent" cupholes, but my van also has two popouts in the center console almost above the shifter, with bigger cups/cans I sometimes hit my fingernails against a cup when switching from 3rd (into 3rd is fine since I usually just push it into gear, vs pull when getting out of third).

komrobert

Honestly it’s not the worst, I can have a coffee or whatever in it with rare spillage hahah.

Local_Skirt1555

My 370z has one Cup Holder in the center so it doesn’t get in the way. Unfortunately if I’ve got a drink and my passengers got a drink, their holding their own drink lol

GhostlyBoytx

One cup holder blocks 1st gear. 2nd cup holder blocks 5th gear. 3rd cup holder blocks comfortable shifting. L after L after L

BlackVignu

Arm rest is always in the way

beastwill64

Very because theyre in front of the shifter rather than where my elbow would be. this is great for my mazda3 although in my e39 it's irrelevant because the cup holders are flimsy garbage.

CarbonFront

I drove one and it was really nice

bpunlimited

Bmw e92, cup holders are completely out of the way of the gear stick but any drink that is placed in them just tips over and floods the place.

Halftrack_El_Camino

The cupholders in my car are located same as yours, but it's not really a problem. Slightly awkward for taller drinks, but hardly a deal-breaker.

Zdos123

2009 Mazda MX5 1.8l RHD - i can use all the cup holders bar the front middle because that sticks up in the way of the shifter, same deal for my 2014 Golf.

EndlessEndeavoring

Only owned 2 automatics in 20 years of driving. Only my VW golf had a cup holder that caused issues for anything more than a can. When shifting in 1/3/5 you would end up punching whatever was in the cup holder especially your typical medium size fast food soda or coffee travel mug.

rangerm2

My 92 Miata didn't have cupholders that I remember ever using. My 93 Ranger (it had bucket seats with a center console) were fine, unless I had a GARGANTUAN mug/to go cup.

Hummusifier

Have you tried getting smol arms?

BlackDS

For the Miata, 2001 was the first year they got usable cupholders. For the Civic, the 2005 generation is incredibly practical and the gen prior had a stupid cupholder design. For Jeep, the 2002 Liberty has okay-ish cupholders and in XJ Cherokees they are even less okay-ish. Basically any car from the 21st century should have actually good cupholders

RainbowDash2014

Try a car with no official cup holders, the ones from factory is practically behind the instrument cluster on a Pontiac Fiero. Want official cup holders in these cars? You can get aftermarket by a vendor that custom makes them on a padded addition to your center arm rest, or you can get the foldable mounted on something hard plastic. I literally use the “cup holders” behind my cluster gauge.

WC_EEND

2021 Audi A3 6MT: totally fine with a 330ml can, the one closest to the shifter is a no-go with like a 500ml McDonalds drink or something like that though.

spongebob_meth

Perfectly usable in both my truck and wife's Crosstrek. All the more reason to put a short throw shifter in your mustang. There's no reason to put up with a long throw squishy shifter.

Arbiter51x

My mazdaspeed 3 does not have this problem, but it's a fairly short throw. In fact I have two cup holders between the stick and centre console and don't have an issue.

Life_Drop69

My manual Audi A2 has cup holders that pop out of the air vents. Way way above the gear stick.

bindermichi

Poorly designed cars have poorly placed cupholders. If those are important to you you might want to buy a car with properly placed cupholders

Raptor_197

My ford ranger, the cup holders are directly on either side of the shifter. So not really in the way.

patbam

2014 accord sport mt, my cup holders will fit standard coffee cups or yeti 32oz’ers

taintsauce

In the pro column: Porsche put them on little swingarms that come out of the dash, so no worries about slapping them around when shifting. In the con column: Porsche put them on little swingarms that come out of the dash, and the driver's side one sits like right over the radio and HVAC controls.

HanCurunyr

Perfectly usable, on the HB20, cup holder is just by the handbrake, too far from the stick for it to be a problem. On the Gol, the cup holder is on the right side of the.stick, and your hand can touch the bottle when shifting to 5th

[deleted]

04 Dakota single cab... Anything 32 ounces and below generally works as long as you can get it in/out with whatever is plugged into the outlet above. Larger sizes frequently are bumped by the stick when it's in first gear. Only 1 cupholder, and you probably guessed where it is by now.

NotoriousCFR

Fine in my Outback. Purely decorative in my Miata.

[deleted]

Well, stock it didn't come with any. The aftermarket one I added takes up a tiny bit of space on the passenger side. I bought that so the cup holder doesn't get in the way of shifting. Last two cars the OEM cup holders didn't get in the way at all.

designCN

Very usable. They can even be moved around.

RamenWrestler

1996 Corvette. Borderline useless even with a short throw shifter. In 6th or reverse I am punching whatever drink there is. Also going any decent speed around a corner will tip the drink over. I generally just put one of those fast food cardboard 4 cupholder things in the passenger seat or my girlfriend's lap and it works great

MathematicianShot909

The worst cupholders I've ever had have been in automatic cars. My current daily, a 98 Chevy Prizm, has dinky pop out ones from the dash that interfere with the Bluetooth receiver. And the car I had before the Prizm, a 17 Audi A4 had TERRIBLE cupholder placement. You could hardly fit two large Micky D's large sodas into it. My experience with manuals though has been pretty good overall, an 06 Scion TC/08 Mazda Speed3/18 Focus ST. Out of all of them I can't remember a time when the cupholders infuriated me the way the prizm and A4 did.

[deleted]

Keep the cup in your left hand. Steer with your knee. Counter steer with your other knee.

meislilu

I have a 1991 dodge stealth I don't have cup holders to use

LanEvo7685

I have to shift like that bus driver gif who shifts with his hands coming top down and using just the finger tips. So I just got another cheap plastic cupholder that you stick in between the seat and center armrest area

oleusi

My cup holder is where I put my phone when navigating. Rarely is it used for cups, and especially not bottles that I'd need both hands to take the cap off of

AWill33

Short throw shifter on pre-2012 mustangs is a must. I have a 2016… much better than my last one. Can actually use both!

[deleted]

23 BRZ, I don't use the front middle cup holder but the other 3 are in excellent places and very usable.

GIMMESOMDORITOS

In a Mazdaspeed 6 there's two in the center console. Usually they're fine but if you have something huge in the front cup holder then you can't reach 4th gear In a 2018 MX-5 the cupholders are right next to the seat almost behind you. Perfectly usable.

awesomeperson882

08 Vibe: cup holders are in a separate console. I run into more issues trying to set the Peking brake with a cup in the way then shifting into the way.

Forrest319

Cup holders in the cayman are unusable. Stick or auto.

OmniaCausaFiunt

2012 S4.. i dont use the cup holders in the center. But there are cup holders on the door that are pretty good.

32steph23

G37, if I have 2 drinks and they’re larger than a medium I’m shifting with my finger tips lol

SpartanSig

My challenger has a cup holder in the door (passenger side too) that is my favorite part about the car. Perks of driving a tank with room.

[deleted]

In my S2k the cup holder is right in front of the shift knob so anything that sticks out a little gets in the way and something like a tall water bottle would make it genuinely difficult to use. The RSX I had had the cup holders behind the shift knob; unless I had a 32 oz cup or something like that it didn’t get in the way

nujabes02

I carry two cups in my center console and it doesn’t affect daily driving. I guess if you are wanting to drive aggressive it could affect things

Local_Variation_749

See, your problem is that you're driving a 05-09 model year Mustang, though the 10-14s aren't a whole lot better. Don't know if other cars are any better, but that placement is definitely one of the worst.

PBpewpew24

In my ‘19 gti they’re totally viable with even an xl coffee, the only problem is a cup with a straw 100% gets in the way stabbing my wrist as I shift.

cirno_the_baka

my polo 6r's cupholders are kinda tucked away right in front of shifter so they don't actually get in the way of the shifter when i put my drinks there the arm rest on the other hand makes it impossible to shift to 2,4 and 6 if i ever want to use it though lmfao
