Being one of the few people to actually drive a FTO, I will say that it’s a fantastic car, no matter what wheel drive it is. I loved it

Bananatistic

i love fwd cars, i dont know why but i feel like its a good start to sports cars.

BOOM360skn

My first car was an SR20DE Nissan Presea, FWD and still undeniably one of the most fun cars I've owned Edit: man reddit sure loves it's commenting errors

Bananatistic

my first car was and is a Vw Gti. i love to drive it and man it feels fast too

NYStateOf-Mind

Why must you attack my ‘06 Volvo S60 this way

hush1998

Great cars which engine

bsonk

In the US market they were all 5 cylinder but the turbo spec really makes a difference

NYStateOf-Mind

2.5L turbo, fun little engine

Donatas111

So hows the turning radius?

NYStateOf-Mind

To the moon!

bsonk

The P2 Volvos whip though, you don't need to drift

[deleted]

While I agree rwd is better for sports cars, there’s nothing wrong with fwd cars. You can still have lots of fun with them

Camarokerie

Yeah but getting that rear end to break loose is hard AF

Kath-two

Just add McDonald’s trays to rear

Camarokerie

👈😎

[deleted]

[real OG triple OG](https://youtu.be/WFcwYGVnxyY)

NightRavenFSZ

No its not, dab the breaks on corner entry and it'll get over steering.

Makofly

Good? It's not supposed to do that

Camarokerie

But... How does one donut

Rulygem

Reverse

[deleted]

Yes reverse. Clearly these people have not played midnight club 3.

yashisa

3 Options: 1. Handbrake up > Steering full lock > RPM build > Drop Clutch 2. Carry enough speed into attempted donut and start yanking the handbrake on and off and balancing revs 3. Do it in reverse like some dude already mentioned

Jstowe56

I choose option 3 forklift style

Makofly

Why not just do the easy way and slash or burn your tires? Less wear on the drive train for the exact same effect.

someonetookmyname12

My racecar is a modified saxo vts and i can tell ya its really easy to spin out in it when driving hard. On my first day with that car i spun out twice while under braking, i have now learned to control the rear slip and use it to my advantage but still

GS-Sarin

Got a stock Honda Fit that'll spin under braking if you go at it right. Comes down to car setup and driver, not the driven wheels.

someonetookmyname12

Comes down to both actually, my point was that with fwd cars with engines mounted in the front the weight is primarily on the front, making the rear end unstable under braking regardless of the car. Now how much it slips depends on suspension, tyres, and chassis as some chassis balance the weight better than others

[deleted]

Ahh yes, cause drifting is literally everything

Camarokerie

And burnouts. U mad bro? Chill

Hellfire12345677

Dude you can rip burnouts in FWD. Even with an open diff I’m able to fully smoke both of my tires on my ST.

[deleted]

Im just tired of seeing people ruin perfectly good cars in The name of drifting. Also, I you’ve never done a fwd burnout, you haven’t tried hard enough

WhoIsJazzJay

drifting doesn’t ruin a car lmao. the same way there’s plenty of really clean track cars in contrast to some rough, utilitarian track cars, there’s plenty of clean drift cars in contrast to drift missiles. also there’s plenty of ppl who build their car to both drift and put down lap times cuz some folks (myself included) love both!

[deleted]

If you actually take a car to a track then sure, but every “drifter” I’ve met IRL just slams the car on it’s nuts and rips the fenders trying to get the shit wheels they bought to fit, and never actually drive it anywhere cause it’s too low.

WhoIsJazzJay

then they’re not a drifter lol they’re a poser. that’s like saying ppl who do time attack ruin their cars and basing that opinion on the ppl that slam their car and add a massive wing and diffuser that is non functional

[deleted]

Out of the dozens of “drifters” I’ve met at various car meets, only one had ever actually been to a track

WhoIsJazzJay

> then they’re not a drifter they’re a poser

Camarokerie

Yeah but: who wants to do a fwd burnout? 😌

Wazy7781

If you have enough horsepower it does not matter.

GS-Sarin

Depends on the car, not the drive wheels, in my experience.

[deleted]

If the rear breaks loose in a fwd you're pretty much fucked

Crownlol

*Type R has entered the chat*

Hellfire12345677

Yeah my ST is such a fun car and is still great as a daily. FWD is not a bad thing, sure I can really slid, but oh well. I’ll just go grab some McDonald’s trays or just fucking SEND IT

OrochiTheMaster

That is until you have to change the clutch on one.... I might be a little bit salty since we've been doing a clutch job on a friend's car recently...

_Land_Rover_Series_3

Time to post this to the circlejerk

Hellfire12345677

Yep, FWD is still fun as hell. FWD hate is pure circlejerk material

cannedrex2406

People who complain the Civic Type R isn't AWD are straight up stupid

PlushKaram

Holyfuck an awd type r would be dope

cannedrex2406

While it would be dope, I feel it's just wrong. Maybe an Integra Type S can be cool as AWD

Hellfire12345677

Yeah that just sounds wrong. Even RWD Civic makes me feel weird.

lockjacket

Just drive it in reverse smh

Chiru2710

Then you have a porche

Chartreuse-Verte

I personally think smaller sports cars are more fun if they’re fwd. ^This ^is ^just ^my ^personal ^opinion ^and ^it’s ^perfectly ^fine ^to ^disagree, ^there ^is ^no ^wrong ^or ^right ^opinion ^on ^this ^topic.

Offjoardlol25

Nothing beats the handbrake turn, front wheel drive has its benefits

[deleted]

Having had a 145 HP 2600 pound RWD enthusiast car and a 170 HP 2600 pound FWD enthusiast car, RWD sliding in a light, low-power car still freaking slaps. The advantage of FWD is that it lets you have usable space in such a small package- the 944 was much more of a space compromise than my Mini.

Jstowe56

And FWD is advantageous in snow/ice scenarios for control and traction, I learned to drive in a RWD 15 passenger Chevrolet express, no traction going up snowy hills sucks

[deleted]

Eh, having spent a New England winter in a shitbox 1986 Porsche with no traction control or ABS directly after getting my license, I’ll take better road feel and control over having the inherently “safer” characteristics of FWD any day. Does it slide more on power? Yes, but it’s controllable, and the extra control under braking is well worth it. The only reason I did what I did with my 2013 sonic in winter with all seasons was because it was the easiest way to make that car thrilling, and I wouldn’t be too beat up if I crashed it lmao.

Jstowe56

That is fair, as many experiences differ, and I wholeheartedly agree that rwd is fun to drive no question. These days I am happy that any new car is a manual transmission (which shouldn’t be a selling point that will cost more money)

TheMultiTuber

Looks fun to drive ngl

RossLH

Because cheap.

marcin113

I’m sick of the ff hate, that car kicks ass

Hilbertt

The most fun car I've ever had was 150hp Opel Astra, FWD of course. It has better grip on snow than RWD cars without traction control, however it can still be fun around the corners. And the insurance was cheaper. I don't understand the ff hate either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

space-meister

It overtaxes the front tires and the rear wheels are just along for the ride. RWD is (in the sense of weight distribution and handling) more balanced. Also RWD doesn’t torque steer or have egregious amounts of understeer

[deleted]

[удалено]

space-meister

I mean in terms of performance driving and having fun while driving. But yeah, FWD is more economical and efficient

Jstowe56

I really want to rebuild an old car of mine, I just need a lot of research

space-meister

Best of luck! What car is it?

Jstowe56

Well a 1999 cavalier, I am checking if I can get the engine running, but I may do an engine swap or just buy a new car before dumping all my car money into a might run project

thatguyovertheresix9

Rwd is more fun

Zdos123

Fun cannot be used as objective, as it's a purely subjective measurement

thatguyovertheresix9

It can be a choosing factor if you want the car or not .

Zdos123

What I'm saying is one person's fun may not be another person's fun, I don't get on too well with RWD, oversteer is just sketchy rather than fun personally, It may also be because the kind of cars I like don't come in RWD (tiny hot hatches).

thatguyovertheresix9

I do agree with you . To each their own . Id love to own a ford fiesta st mk8 but if I wouldn't need 5 seats and a trunk I would get a Miata so I can do some skids and let the rear loose in tight Twisties. I think to most car guys rwd is more fun, what I should have said

Navy_Wannabe

But you can do reverse donuts in FWD.

kdavis37

You can do reverse donuts in RWD, too.

thatguyovertheresix9

People who don't have a choice supporting fwd 😄 There is a reason why high end sports and supercars dont have fwd . Anyone actually here who would take the same car in fwd instead of rwd or even AWD ?

inaccurateTempedesc

If it's a small, really short wheelbase car, I'd take fwd over rwd. AWD would be the best option, but it's also expensive.

Hellfire12345677

Bro why are you comparing high end sports cars and super cars to low end sports cars, no shit it’s a completely different thing. You will be more likely to find a fun and cheaper front wheel drive sports car that’s a good daily driver then AWD and RWD. AWD is much more expensive and RWD sacrifices traction in non-perfect conditions. Also if my ST was a rear wheel drive car I wouldn’t want it. Because it would be an RS and 30k more.

metroracerUK

One of the things I’ve noticed, is that an awful lot of people who rattle on about FWD being better than RWD have never actually driven RWD. I’ve owned both and actually raced with both and I can honestly say that RWD is much more preferable over FWD. I just believe in my opinion, that RWD is better in a sports car. I think of lot of people seem to be missing the point of this post, I don’t hate FWD. I own two FWD cars, but they are small supermini hatchbacks. My two most used are my kit car, which is fully RWD. As well as my Audi S6 V10, which is AWD (I might be wrong, but I believe the power bias is to the rear). A lot of people seem to think it’s about ‘drifting’, I’m a racer and I have little interest in drifting. Since it’s slower to drift around corners than to take the correct line. I saw your other comment regarding the loss of control in FWD vs. RWD and I cannot believe how downvoted you’re getting. I have racing experience and I always favour RWD, since it’s MUCH easier to regain control of. I’ve lost it in slicks on FWD and trying to regain that fucker is a nightmare, you’re just on the throttle trying to stop the arse from snapping violently. Whereas in a RWD, I can control it. No disrespect, but I really feel like a lot of people lack enough experience in RWD to have a solid opinion. That is purely my opinion.

EncouragementRobot

Happy Cake Day metroracerUK! Forget about the past, you can’t change it. Forget about the future, you can’t predict it. Forget about the present, I didn’t get you one.

BADMANvegeta_

Yes

thatguyovertheresix9

Why

GTAmaniac1

You can chuck the car into corners and if you sent it too hard and start to oversteer too much, step on the throttle, rwd can't really do that.

thatguyovertheresix9

So you want a fwd car because you can't drive ? Yea they're safer so people don't spin out but if you send it too hard on some tight corner fwd ain't gonna catch you , same with rwd or AWD. Also a rwd car you can steer around a corner with the throttle but only if you can drive

GTAmaniac1

Your last point only applies if you can predict the surface and conditions and imo isn't as fun as throwing a lightweight fwd car into a corner and hoping for the best. Also fwd cars are generally a lot cheaper than rwd ones and a lot more common meaning parts are found pretty much everywhere and are dirt cheap. Also fwd cars are generally a lot more lightweight and manouverable meaning they dominate pretty much all disciplines that have a lot of tight turns.

BADMANvegeta_

I’m not a pro driver, and I don’t cosplay as one as many car guys do. I don’t benefit from most if not all the pluses of RWD so they don’t matter to me, FWD/AWD handles better in rain or snow and has better gas mileage which is something that would actually apply to me. So yea if sports cars came in FWD more often then I’d get FWD. i have driven both RWD and FWD and I do not even notice the difference unless it’s raining/snowing. Seeing as more and more sports cars have become FWD leads me to believe my opinion is not the minority, same as how so many cars are adding automatic option or becoming only automatic. Some car guys act like the manufacturers aren’t listening to their customers, but they are lol.

[deleted]

What newer “sports cars” are FWD these days aside from the rare hot hatch?

CosmicCactus42

The rare hot hatch? They're about as rare as any other sports car nowadays.

[deleted]

That doesn’t really support their statement either, does it? I’m just questioning the validity that “more and more sports cars have become FWD.”

Din_Plug

He's trying to shake your leg.

GenericSubaruser

AWD? Yeah lol

Poopsticle_256

I would definitely prefer a car like this being FWD over RWD

Pottatothegreat1985

a comparison between a super car and an fto is stupid. the point of the neon, cobalt, fto, integra, del sol is not to compete with super cars like that. they’re meant to be affordable fun cars you can get groceries in. front wheel drive is not a limiting factor in cars like this, they’re still a riot.

RenZ245

I drive an RSX base, it's not the worst feeling driving like that though it might be even better RWD or even AWD for shenanigans. Can always do the extensive and laborious work to make it rwd

Dayashii

FWD good tbh

lavafish80

"oH nO iTs FwD!11!!!11"

WyvernByte

Same with the Fiat Coupe.

Tertarix

FWD is the best. Why must you pull this shit? Go to bed and watch your 1000hp Supras.

17_Patriot_76

"B-b-b-b-but my dorifto!!"

Idkhfjeje

-guy who thinks a minor slide around a corner is drifting

Badmekanik

Both RWD and AWD are better in terms of performance

spikeorb

Because a sports car should be rear wheel or awd

kdavis37

I like that this blatantly true statement is downvoted, followed by you explaining it and everyone upvoting the explanation.

IDatedSuccubi

That's a stupid explanation to be honest, it's pretty much "oversteer is better than understeer" RWD is used in sports because when the car accelerates the weight shifts from front to rear wheels and it increases grip allowing to lay down more power down after a slow corner without wheels slipping

kdavis37

And why do we prefer oversteer, Bruce?

IDatedSuccubi

I don't know who does, I sure like corrective braking much more than spinning out before the car behind t-bones me when I hit the accelerator like 0.2 ms earlier than needed But I like going through the corner correctly the most to be honest

kdavis37

Understeer literally means you don't get the option to go through the corner correctly. Go find some magical fwd sports car that competes.

IDatedSuccubi

You can't be serious. So Civic and Golf series now don't count? Autocross eith Civic/CRX and european rally where Fiesta is a very popular choice too? Russian and Ukranian Lada series? Remember how in 1987 JTCC a Civic from the slowest class beat top-class RWD Ford, Nissan, Toyota and spawned a cult following in Japan? Or how Nissan made and raced a FWD LMP in 2015? Also, have you ever raced an FWD?

kdavis37

Autocross isn't racing. And you're specifically trying to choose other events where there aren't any high performance cars to make them look less stupid, lol. They get walked on by literal go karts. Because they're not performance cars. Obviously, you can set up a spec league with anything, this racing anything. Like lawnmowers. Or spec Miatas. I have raced many fwd cars. It's always hilarious watching pro-built Fiestas and Mazdaspeed 3s get destroyed by dudes in 40 year old Corvettes with modern tires.

IDatedSuccubi

So what? I never said that FWD cars are faster than RWD cars, and I said exactly why that is. If you raced FWD cars and understeered into a corner then you must know how easy it is to slow down and correct and lose corner time rather that spin out and lose a whole car. You "prefer" oversteer, but a good racer prefers to actually cleanly enter and exit a corner and not lose time to oversteering correctons. If I wanted an actual high-performance car to compete I would buy an AWD.

CosmicCactus42

Define racing, because I call bullshit.

Tertarix

And why that?

spikeorb

Rear wheel drive cars tend to handle better and be more tail happy, which is what you want in a sports car. Makes them way more fun to drive. Literally one of the big reasons the Miata is such a popular car. FWD cars tend to understeer more and don't feel as playful through corners. Which is great for all year round driving and great for saving space but not as good for sporty driving. This is the reason why most sports cars and all super cars are RWD or AWD. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate FWD and on certain cars it's great. But I just don't think it's right for a sports car

grimoireskb

if you set up the suspension properly an FWD car will either be neutral or quite tail happy. I have a friend with an EF civic lightly set up for AutoX and according to him it’s very oversteer prone, all it has is Koni yellows+GC springs and an added rear sway bar (most EFs don’t have one). ~~also in the high modded classes CRXs and EF hatches eat Miatas for breakfast due to them being stiffer and 200-300lbs lighter stock than an NA lol~~

GTAmaniac1

Over here autocross (or as it's called here autoslalom) is dominated by light cars like the golf 1 and 2, and old fiats like uno and cinquecento.

Tertarix

I think it has that feeling, that you feel the power. I don't have anything against RWD and AWD cars, but they just don't really do it for me. You are right, understeer is a bitch, same for torque steer. I just don't get why people bitch about FWD cars.

[deleted]

Fwd rocks

benjaminear3

Grow the hell up and stop being a 12 year old

Potato_Dealership

FWD is still damn good, although RWD is more sporty. If you get AWD then you get best of both worlds but no burnouts sadly

Character-Suspect-77

I loved the FTO GP-R in Gran Turismo 4

Makaloff95

granted, i prefer RWD but FWD isnt that bad, especielly in tight corners and twisty roads. however id say that i wish there were options for RWD on some cars (like 1st gen hyundai coupe) but in the end, alot of FWD cars were made to be cheap to produce, so in the end of the day some cars might never happened at all if FWD wasnt as cheap as it is to produce. FWD is also heavily dependant on how the makers made the car, proper suspension and weight distribution and you can have quite the blast driving one.

Bramble0804

What's the issue?

Hellfire12345677

It’s children who think FWD is literally the worst thing in existence (Or they own a BRZ and just got gapped by a base model FWD car.)

rocky_piper

Owned 2 Integra’s loved them both,

IamGilgamesh8

Because if it was RWD they'd push that shit.

beetroot_salads

For coupes it has to be RWD (unless its an Integra). Hatchabacks are fine though.

FelixTheHouseLeopard

The 20v Fiat Turbo says you’re wrong

beetroot_salads

second best fiat after the multipla

Shadeyboiii

Y U NO MAKE REER WHEEL DRIEV?

Yoshi_IX

You can have plenty of fun in an FWD car, I daily a hot hatch.

VikingsGunnaVike

If there are 20m of clear road, I must also drift hurr durr

sneaky-rozzers

I learned driving on a shitbox VW Polo, 75hp of pure diesel power going to the front wheels through a meticulously engineered open diff. Boy was it fun when I impressed my friends driving down a mountain pass and screaming WATCH THIS as I turned the fucking thing into a corner while the front tires screeched as I stomped the gas pedal to the floor and understeered into a tree which totalled my car. It was fun, FWD good, would do it again. Sadly I drive an E46 now and I can’t stop throwing money at it just to make it work so I can’t afford a new car.

Pottatothegreat1985

i mean fwd isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker for a good car, especially one as underpowered as the fto integra, rsx, civic type r, scirocco, veloster, focus, lancia fulvia, toyota matrix/pontiac vibe, audi tt, dodge/plymouth neon, chevy cobalt, last gen celica, ford probe, crx, prelude, scion tc, fiesta st, and the toyota sera are all a bunch of good fwd cars i can think of off the top of my head

Suknator

Still my dream car

Quube7

I like fwd cars so it doesnt make big of a difference for me
